Born and raised in North Philadelphia, Pastor Carl has his own personal connection to this second chance model he's molded with Beat the Block. His influence has trickled out beyond his neighborhood and now he can say he's been to the White House, challenged Donald Trump on his "make America great again" statement as it relates to Black Americans and advocated for true community safety and healing particularly for Philadelphians. n a time when corporate spending is protected as free speech, each of us must wonder how our voices will be heard. Utility companies have deep pockets, and their lobbyists are a fixture at state capitol buildings. Big businesses have big energy budgets and their associations are adept at making their issues a priority. And both of these industry sectors work together to create advocacy groups to advance common interests. So, what about residential energy customers? What about small businesses? Our resources pale in comparison. How are our voices heard and how are our concerns addressed? Luckily, for most residential and small business ratepayers in the Midwest, we are represented by a state Citizens Utility Board (CUB). These non-profit groups work tirelessly to make sure that our needs are represented at public utility commission and legislative hearings. For decades they have taken a hardnosed approach at keeping electricity costs low while ensuring that expenses aren't shifted to the electric bills of homes and small businesses. In the context of the energy transition, CUBs advocacy role is critically important if we want an energy system that best serves people. We discuss the energy transition and the benefits of increased citizen involvement with Tom Content, long-time journalist and Executive Director of the Citizens Utility Board of Wisconsin. 0:20 – Big business energy spending vs residential ratepayers 1:17 – The role of a Citizens Utility Board 4:04 – The energy transition's origins 8:41 – Decisions surrounding utility rates of return 11:13 – Importance of CUB and Energy Democracy 13:35 – CUB funding and activity 18:11 – Evolving energy issues and solar PV 20:45 – Energy poverty issues 28:20 – Impact of recent federal legislation 33:34 - Coordination recommendations to leverage federal funds 39:11 – “Magic wand” solutions 43:21 – Building a movement " We need people from across the state to get involved. And because it's your energy future, ...it's all of our energy future. And if we don't get involved, it'll be built for us and it'll focus on the supply side like we've been talking about almost way too exclusively. We need the public to say to demand energy efficiency. " - Tom Content, Executive Director, Citizens Utility Board of Wisconsin ABOUT OUR GUEST: TOM CONTENT Tom is the Executive Director of the Citizens Utility Board. He joined CUB in 2017 after working for more than 30 years as a journalist. He became interested in energy and what it costs households while sitting in the back seat, waiting for what seemed like forever, during the gas lines of the ‘70s. After graduating from Boston University's College of Communication Tom worked at newspapers in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania before moving to Wisconsin. He reported on utilities and worked as business editor at the Green Bay-Press Gazette in the 1990s and then moved to Milwaukee, where he covered energy, utilities and sustainable business for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. His reporting on energy and climate change won the National Press Club's Stokes Award for Energy Writing in 2007.

A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin: When Wilma Welsh left Canada to work with the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT) in 1969, she told me that it changed her life. Little did she know how she'd be a part of the pivotal role that the PCT would play as a voice for the people of Taiwan. During her time in Taiwan, Wilma experienced the Kuomintang's surveillance and censorship, and felt the lingering impact of the 228 massacre which happened on February 28, 1947. She was the English secretary to Reverend Kao Chun-ming, the General Secretary of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan. When Taiwan's international status and the fate Taiwan's people came in to question Reverend Kao and others wrote the Public Statement on Our National Fate, Wilma typed it up and took it out of Taiwan to Hong Kong where it could be safely mailed out. She also recounted how she was working at the Bible Society in Taipei in 1975 when the Kuomintang arrived to confiscate Taiwanese Hoklo language versions of the Bible and ended up smuggling out 2 copies of the Bible. In 2006 she became the Moderator of the 132nd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. She was the first lay person to ever hold this position. In 2010 she was by the bestowing of a Doctor of Divinity Degree (DD) from Knox College, the University of Toronto. During her year as Moderator she received three additional honors, a life membership in the Women's Missionary Society, the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Medal, and an honorary membership in the World Taiwanese Christian Association. This episode of Talking Taiwan has been sponsored by NATWA, the North America Taiwanese Women's Association. NATWA was founded in 1988, and its mission is: to evoke a sense of self-esteem and enhance women's dignity, to oppose gender discrimination and promote gender equality, to fully develop women's potential and encourage their participation in public affairs, to contribute to the advancement of human rights and democratic development in Taiwan, to reach out and work with women's organizations worldwide to promote peace for all. To learn more about NATWA visit their website: www.natwa.com Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: Wilma's early involvement with the Presbyterian Church What brought Wilma to Formosa (as Taiwan was known then) to work with the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan Wilma's parents' reaction to her going to Taiwan What Wilma was doing before she went to Taiwan What Wilma knew about Taiwan before she went there The language training that Wilma did before going to Taiwan Wilma's first impressions of Taiwan How Wilma first worked with M.C. Neal has a proven record of building cross-functional relationships, driving efficiency through continuous improvement, designing operational strategies, and coaching teams to success.Tune in to learn Neal's thoughts on redesigning systems to be more equitable, measuring DEIB initiatives and strategies, toxic workplaces of "no return", and more!About AllVoicesIn today's workforce, people often don't feel empowered to speak up and voice their opinions about workplace issues, including harassment, bias, and other culture issues. This prevents company leadership from making necessary changes, and prevents people from feeling fulfilled, recognized, and included at work. At AllVoices, we want to change that by providing a completely safe, anonymous way for people to report issues directly to company leaders. This allows company leadership real transparency into what's happening in their companies—and the motivation to address issues quickly. Our goal is to help create safer, more inclusive companies.
