With nearly 430 units in the National Park System, of which 63 are National Parks, we all probably could use a little help in planning our adventures into the park system. But do you simply visit a park's website to plan your trip? Find an online guidebook? Buy a hardcover guidebook? Or simply wing it when you reach your destination? This is Kurt Repanshek, your host at the National Parks Traveler. I must confess, I've taken all three approaches, and I've even written a guidebook to the parks, and there's probably a fair amount of guidebook material on the Traveler.  Today we're reaching out to two writers who make their living writing national park guidebooks. Becky Lomax is the author of “USA National Parks: The Complete Guide to All 63 National Parks” from Moon Travel Guides, as well as her latest titles “Best of Glacier, Banff and Jasper: Make the Most of One to Three Days in the Parks”, which she co-wrote with Andrew Hempstead, and “Glacier National Park: Hiking, Camping, Lakes, and Peaks”. Michael Oswald is the author of “Your Guide to the National Parks”, “National Park Maps: An Atlas of United States National Parks”, and “The Day Hiker's Guide to the National Parks”.

In this episode we interview Nick and Tara of Unequipped 2 Road Trip. Before meeting each other Tara spent time traveling the world and Nick loved a good ole camping trip. When they met it was a no-brainer that their love for the outdoors and adventure would be a perfect match. That's until the COVID shutdown halted everything a couple months after they began. Lucky for them they shared the same employer and ended up working remotely together. Not long after, they began to get a little stir crazy and made a rash decision - sell their house, car and personal belongings. Why? To buy a RV and set out to see all 63 United States National Parks. If you've ever wondered how to start your dream of a life on the road, or how you know you met the right adventure buddy, then this one's for you! Life in Motion is brought to you by Actual Outdoors. One consideration that most people don't think about when visiting The United States National Parks is "where do you use the bathroom?" Someone has to design these public restrooms, taking into account the local resources, the climate, and human behavior (not to mention animal behavior) so that we can poop safely and in peace.Cynthia Moscoso has spent a good portion of her 28 year career engineering the intersection of our nation's natural treasures and the inevitable output of the millions of people who visit our parks each year.Yes, we are talking poop, folks. And, lots of it. While we don't get too far down the, ahem, rabbit hole technically, our conversation explores how a few of her projects were put together to find the balance between the call of nature and nature's call. This is an important subject for us to step into as our climate changes and we have to adapt to using less water.I hope you enjoy the show and, as always, if you have questions or comments, please email me at matt@mckeephotography.comThe parks mentioned in this episode include Denali National Park, Crater Lake and The USS Arizona.

Hi dear listeners! First of all I want to say that I truly appreciate you tuning in and taking this journey with me. I look forward to hearing kind feedback from you, so please be sure to subscribe, rate and comment - it really makes my day! Also if you or someone you know is interested in being a guest on the show, please let me know by emailing marina@rawfork.com. Today I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Jamie Wilkey, a true beam of inspiration. Jamie grew up in a small town in Wyoming where she got her start in pharmacy working at the local City Drug. There were only 3 pharmacies within 90 miles, and all of them were staffed by grumpy middle-age male pharmacists. She wanted to change that! So, after completing high school she went straight to the University of Wyoming and completed her undergraduate coursework and her PharmD degree in 6 years. She was active in student government while at UW and also served as president and later as vice-president of her pharmacy class. Upon graduation a week after her 24th birthday Jamie moved to Utah where she worked in a small-town community pharmacy up in the snowy Rocky Mountains next door to some of Utah’s world-class skiing. For the past 10 years she has worked part-time in the community setting while growing her family. She is a mama to four little, rambunctious boys who this year are ages 2,4,6&8. Nearly every year since graduating Jamie and her husband have taken at least one European vacation together because they love to travel and can’t get enough of it. Additionally, they take their little family to one (or more!) of the incredible United States National Parks as a family vacation. Extensive travel and community pharmacy work schedules are not highly compatible, so in 2020 Jamie created her own job for herself that better suits her talents, her passions, and her family’s busy schedule. She abruptly jumped into the world of entrepreneurship and has found her true calling in life. She is the founder & CEO of Arches Health, LLC, and serves there as a precision medicine consultant pharmacist. To date, Arches Health focuses on two areas of precision medicine: functional wellness & pharmacogenomics. Jamie serves as a business partner with prescribers and independent pharmacies to incorporate these two areas into their practice to improve the health and vitality of their patients, and provide the practice with a stream of non-insurance income. Dr. Wilkey is optimistic about the future of pharmacy and knows great things are in store for those pharmacists who are willing to push boundaries, to think big, and to use the full extent of their education. Anna graduated from Carnegie Mellon University.  Using her Fulbright Grant, she studied sustainable waste management practices in Namibian townships.  She has since staked a role in the San Diego community as a Salesforce and technology consultant, working primarily with non-profits and start-up companies. Anna is also an ambassador for the Franklin Project.  She loves surfing, rock climbing, and camping; and has visited 23/53 of the United States National Parks. Playing Small Moment Anna tried working with universities for funding. After the realization that it was too difficult working with universities for funding, they had to revert to traditional ways. Anna felt uncomfortable asking for donations and often came across as timid. Once she spoke to other non-profit founders, she had to change the way she approached donors and kicked up her confidence. The Wake Up Call With Anna’s unique skill set, she often gets offered full-time jobs with large salaries while she is doing freelance work. She makes sure to carefully examine her current situation before turning down a job offer. As a result, others often question her about those decisions once they learn she has turned down those large salaries.  Style of Leadership Anna has different methods depending on what/whom she is leading. She leads her construction engineering differently. In not-for-profit, she looks for very specific people that “get it”. Skill set is not as important as the passion people hold for the project you are working on. The key is to surround yourself with the right people. What Are You Excited About? Recently, they collaborated with the Positive Impact Podcast to hold an upcoming week long summit featuring successful individuals who got their start with a year of service. Leadership Practice Anna finds that she has a tendency to blurt out what she is saying, so she is trying hard to listen to everyone and hear what they really have to say. Book to Develop Leadership Rising Strong by Brené Brown What Would You Change? Anna wishes she knew when she was younger that relationships are actually the most important things you have. She wishes she had been less of a jerk as she has a competitive nature that often came between friends.
