This week we're highlighting three Sundance Film Festival films that deal with the effects of racism in America. As We Speak is a documentary that follows Bronx rap artist Kemba as he explores how rap lyrics are being weaponized in the criminal justice system. Director J.M. Harper and subject Kemba discuss how the film is like a song, the inadequacies of the criminal justice system, and how the story is not over.Seeking Mavis Beacon is a documentary that follows the investigation into what happened to one of the most influential Black women in technology who has been missing from the public eye since 1995. Director/investigator Jazmin Jones and associate producer/investigator Olivia McKayla Ross sit down with us to share how they met, how they learned to lean into the discomfort of the process, and servile fembots and marginalized bodies in the tech industry. Finally, we close things out at the red carpet premiere of The American Society of Magical Negroes, with fun chats with director Kobi Libii, and stars Justice Smith and David Alan Grier.Follow director J.M. We are at the Slamdance Film Festival bringing you three short films that deal with the complicated nature of family issues.Baby is a charming short film that follows what happens when a woman with down syndrome wants to have a baby. Director/producer James Di Martino and writer/producer Llewellyn Michael Bates explain why they found it important to tell this story, the inspiration behind the fun party scene, and what a joy it was to make.In Dosh, a hard-of-hearing mother must decide how to get help for her husband's mental illness after her son's life is put at risk. Director/writer Radha Mehta and talent Renu Razdan share how cultural differences and shame play a big part of this story, putting disability and bipolarism on the forefront, and what it takes for a woman to feel more empowered.Restorage is the pilot episode for a series about a man who's father has passed away and left him an old storage unit that has the ability to fix anything that's been broken. Co-creator/director E'an Verdugo and co-creator/producer Caleb Davis share how a storage facility became a main character in the story, how covid almost destroyed their shooting schedule, and their secret to filming a sci-fi story on a budget.Follow director/producer James Di Martino on IGFollow writer/producer Llewellyn Michael Bates on IGFollow Dosh on IG Follow director/writer Radha Mehta on IGFollow actor Renu Razdan on IGFollow director E'an Verdugo on IGFollow producer Caleb Davis on IGSupport the showThanks for listening and for your support! Welcome to the Slamdance Film Festival 2024! Today we're talking about two great documentaries that highlight the passion and determination that it takes to be an athlete. The Death Tour follows wrestling hopefuls in the most grueling tour in wrestling, as they cross northern Canada (in the heart of winter) in order to entertain remote indigenous communities. We sit down with Executive Producer and wrestling great Chris Jericho, and directors Sonya Ballantyne and Stephan Peterson, to discuss the deep significance of the Death Tour (as it celebrates its 50th year!), the difficult task of choosing which wrestlers to highlight, and how a certain director reacted to being mistaken for a wrestler.Nina is an Athlete follows an Israeli wheelchair badminton champion, Nina Gorodetsky, as she attempts to fulfill her dream of making it to the Paralympics, while being a full time mother who is pushing 40. Director Ravit Markus shares the pros and cons of making a film about family, how she accidentally made a nontraditional sports documentary, and the importance of being your biggest advocate as an independent filmmaker. For more information on The Death Tour, head to their website and follow them on IGFor more information on Nina is an Athlete, head to their websiteFollow Chris Jericho on IG and YTFollow director Sonya Ballantyne on IGFollow director Stephan Peterson on IGFollow director Ravit Markus on IG--Thanks for listening and for your support! Do yourself a favor and watch American Fiction! Cord Jefferson's directorial debut hilariously follows a frustrated novelist (Jeffrey Wright) who is tired of the industry profiting from "Black" entertainment that relies on offensive tropes- yet somehow finds himself in the middle of that hypocrisy. We sat down with Cord to discuss Erasure, the book that the film is based on, and the connection he felt that prompted him to write the script. Then he shares how he combines comedy with drama, the score that ties it all together (thanks to composer Laura Karpman), and how strong women in his life helped him battle toxic masculinity. And then we cap it all off by convincing him to move to the Bay Area! For American Fiction showtimes, click hereFollow Cord Jefferson on IGFollow American Fiction on IGRead Cord's hilarious Eater article on Las Vegas hereSound design and audio engineering on this episode by Kayla Anchell--This episode was brought to you by Village Well Parenting. Hi, I'm Traci Ramos, and this is BoozeNation, the Podcast where I talk to members of the bar industry of San Francisco about all things bars and all things San Francisco. BoozeNation is available on Apple Podcasts, iHeartradio, Spotify, and other listening places. Also, BoozeNation is on the socials of Instagram, YouTube and Threads. I want to give a special shout-out to The Uptown Bar on 17th and Capp St. I'm so sorry that this bar didn't make it. I have such wonderful memories of this bar. They even cut off on my birthday one year because I was having too much wonderfulness. Yeah, I deserved to be cut off that night. But thank you again for everything, and I hope the bartenders will be pouring spirits someplace soon. This is my final episode of 2023, and I'm closing out the year with Erin Lim, a fellow bartender and podcaster who co-hosts the spectacular Bitch Talk podcast with Angela Tabora. I discovered Bitch Talk at the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020 It was that fateful Sunday pretty boy Newsome had announced the shutdown of the restaurant and bar industry to try and curb the rise of coronavirus. I was scrolling on Instagram, not really freaking out about what was happening but not knowing what to do. And Bitch Talk podcast popped up on my feed, and Erin and Ange were at a bar in North Beach, The Saloon; in real-time, they were drinking and dancing. They were having so much fun in the wake of a pandemic. I thought, 'Wow, they don't care what pretty boy Newsome said two hours ago they are at a bar.' And they are going big. That was my introduction to Erin and Ang and Bitch Talk podcast. Here is Bitch Talk's tagline, - Bitch Talk is a podcast that boldly highlights the ongoing need for BIPOC women's representation in media, film, and the arts. Hell Yeah, there's a need for more representation. I 100 % agree with that! Long story short, we became podcast friends and real-life friends, which I still can't believe a little bit because they are so legit. They have been in the podcast game for some time. They just had their 10th anniversary. I love it. This episode is brought to you by Descript. Try Descript now! Welcome to Town Business: An Evening of Cultural Power. We love live events, especially when they're in our own backyard among our friends! This was the kickoff event to celebrate Oakland's Mayor Sheng Thao's bold initiative to center film and television production as a cornerstone of economic development. And all we can say is, it's about damn time! The space was energized, the drinks and tacos were flowing, and we were lucky enough to chat with some of Oakland's finest. You'll hear from artist/organizer/co-founder and president of the Center for Cultural Power/one of the evening's panelists, Favianna Rodriguez, Chuck Johnson of Soul Beat, filmmaker Niema Jordan, entertainment lawyer/producer George Rush, and grammy winning musician/culture maker Tommy Shepherd. They share their thoughts on Oakland's cultural roots in activism and the arts, what makes storytellers from the Bay unique, how tv and film can revitalize the city, locations in Oakland they'd like to see on the big screen, and their roles in making sure this exciting initiative is successful.Follow Favianna Rodriguez on IGFollow Chuck Johnson on IGFollow Niema Jordan on IGFollow Tommy Shepherd on IGBitch Talk Podcast recorded this episode live from Mama Dog Studios in Oakland special audio support provided by Kayla AnchellKQED article about Soul Beat from 2020--Thanks for listening and for your support! Reality Winner is an incredible documentary about one of the youngest whistleblowers in US history, and now she's finally able to tell her own story. At the age of 25, Reality Winner was sentenced to 63 months in prison, the longest ever imposed in federal court for an unauthorized release of government information to the media. And after following her story for 5 years, director Sonia Kennebeck has revised her original documentary (United States vs. Reality Winner) to include exclusive footage of Reality's release from prison (on June 2nd, 2021) and her first official interview. Sonia shares her feelings during that first initial interview, the complications of being an investigative journalist in the age of misinformation, and why Reality calls her film a "living documentary".Reality Winner starts streaming on demand on October 31st. This week we sit down over drinks at Oakland's Room 389 with NPR's Aisha Harris! We find out how she became a film and pop culture critic (after a brief stint in a Broadway musical with Sally Struthers!), how she became one of the hosts of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour, and obviously get into all things pop culture. But we also talk about why we love her new book, Wannabe: Reckonings With The Pop Culture That Shapes Me, and the unfortunate (but hilarious) issue she had while recording the audiobook. She shares her thoughts on everything from Will and Jada, to post film Q and A's, the Sex and the City reboot, and her very specific definition of a Zaddy. Cat Person is a film about a college student going on a date with an older man that evolves into all of the potential horrors of modern dating. It's based on a viral short story from the New Yorker in 2017, and six years later, it's as relevant as ever. We got to chat with director Susanna Fogel about the grey area of dating that most of us can relate to, how she was able to direct one of the more uncomfortable sex scenes we've ever seen, and her secret trick to cast bonding. This #BasicBitch was recorded on location at the Mini Bar in San Francisco, and we're excited to finally share that we're in a movie! It's a brief cameo in the film Gasoline Rainbow directed by the Ross Brothers that just premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Take a listen for all the behind the scenes info on why we were asked to be in the film, where it all took place, our unique (yet familiar) experience on set, and when you can potentially watch it for yourself. Next we discuss the Hungry Ghosts art show at the Mini Bar in the Western Addition neighborhood in San Francisco (brought to you by Storied: San Francisco and running through October 9th), and our Labor Day hijinks that started at Fleetwood and ended at the Happy Lounge. We dive into which sport is making us happy and which sport is pissing us off, and cap it all off with our moments of pleasure. Enjoy!--Thanks for listening and for your support! Take us back to our separate trips to Europe this year. Ange talks about her month long Spring visit to Germany, Brussels, and Amsterdam while Erin talks about her recent trip to Barcelona, Puglia (Italy), and Perchtoldsdorf (Austria). Then Ange dives into her quick trip to New York (she hadn't been back since 2003 y'all) and why it was a last minute decision. We wrap it up with Erin's somewhat annual Outside Lands jaunt peppered with beignet's, bounce, and her new obsession - The Foo Fighters (specifically Dave Grohl). This recording took place at one of our favorite bars in San Francisco, Zam Zam - which has a real jukebox filled with music by Nina Simone, Bill Withers, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Dr. John and so many more great musicians. Zam Zam also has one of our favorite bartenders - local artist Kundan Baidwan who first appeared on our show during our tribute Anthony Bourdain crawl back in 2018. Y'all, on a somber note, we are devastated by the climate destruction that has wreaked havoc on Maui. It's a special place for Erin and her husband, Jeff and we are shocked at the loss of life, small businesses, and generations of Hawaiian's. If you have any extra money to give, we strongly encourage you to give to Hawaii Community Foundation. Thank you.--Thanks for listening and for your support! It was months in the making but we finally got to chat with musician and writer Thao Nguyen! We saw Thao perform live IN A CHURCH earlier this year at the SXSW festival down in Austin and immediately knew we had to have her on. Thao's energy, lyrics, and musicianship is a thing to experience and we have been so energized to talk with her that this interview did not disappoint. Randall Park is even more lovely in person than he is on screen! Ange sits down with him at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco to discuss his feature length directorial debut, Shortcomings, based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine. The film follows three young Asian Americans living in the Bay Area as they navigate life, relationships, and (hopefully) their own personal growth.Randall shares his reaction to reading the novel in 2007, AAPI representation through the years, and the great debate that every Asian American has had about the film Crazy Rich Asians. He shares his love for some of the Bay Area musicians that are part of the film's score, and the differences between filming in NY versus Berkeley. Then we go back to his time at UCLA, majoring in Asian American Studies, and founding a comedy troop with friends who he eventually joined forces with to launch the production company, Imminent Collision. Finally, he gets into Hollywood gatekeepers, his work philosophy, and what film he loves that would piss off Ben, the cinephile main character in Shortcomings.Shortcomings opens in theaters on August 4th, get tickets here--on-site audio producer: Josh BrumleyThanks for listening and for your support! This is a film that makes us proud to be from the Bay! Earth Mama follows a pregnant young single mother of two who embraces her Bay Area community as she determines the fate of her family.Director Savanah Leaf sits down with us to explain how this film was born from her short film The Heart Still Hums, the meaning of the title, and how writing the screenplay was a form of therapy. We were also joined by Bay Area Hip Hop artist Tia Nomore who shares why she decided to try her hand at acting, how this role spoke to her real life experiences as a new mom, and what it was like to take acting cues from Erika Alexander. They then share what makes the locations in the film so special, the healing power of nature, and how they hope this film will spark a greater conversation about the problems within the system, and the realities of motherhood.Earth Mama opens in SF at the Roxie Theater on July 7th, and nationwide on July 28th. Welcome to the SF Frameline Film Festival! Every Body is an important and beautiful documentary that focuses on three intersex people's lives as they process the traumas of their past, find community, thrive in their personal lives, and become leaders in the movement for a greater understanding of the intersex community and an end to unnecessary surgeries. Director Julie Cohen and producer Tommy Nguyen share how the intersex movement has been a long time coming, the horrendous stranger than fiction story and archival footage that provided the catalyst for them to tell this story, and why they think we are moving in the right direction.Participant and intersex activist River Gallo shares their experience growing up as intersex, how they manage to find grace in dealing with the misunderstandings of their parents, the inspirational feeling of the crowd at the film's premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, and what makes the closing credits of the film so special.Every Body opens in theaters on June 30thFollow director Julie Cohen on IG & FB & TwitterFollow producer Tommy Nguyen on IGFollow participant River Gallo on IG--Thanks for listening and for your support! Welcome back to our live broadcast from the SFFilm Festival's filmmakers lounge! In this final SFFilm Fest episode, Erin sits down with director Rooth Tang and producer Michelle Moy to discuss their documentary film Rally, about San Francisco political kingmaker Rose Pak. If you're not from or live in the City, you may be asking yourself who's Rose Pak, and why should I care? Well, Rose was an interesting character - immigrant to the states, started out as a journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle, then turned herself into a political powerhouse, activist, and shit disturber. It's a complicated life but an interesting one and director Rooth Tang was a great choice to tell her story. In this live interview, Erin talks to the director and producer about Rooth's invovlement in telling Rose's story (Rooth is from Southern California), how did Rose's story unfold into a full length documentary, and what do they think Rose would think about this film if she was still alive. As San Franciscan's and AAPI Americans, we have a complicated relationship with Rose Pak, and thankfully there are films like this to shine a light on all of her work that ultimately shows how much of a fighter Rose was for Chinese Americans. Welcome back to our live broadcast from the SFFilm Festival's filmmakers lounge! In this episode, Erin talks with the directors of the very powerful documentary Bad Press. Bad Press tells the story of when the Muscogee Nation suddenly begins censoring its free press, a rogue reporter fights to expose her government's corruption in a historic battle that will have ramifications for all of Indian country. This story was an eye opener on so many levels and Erin talked with the directors about how this story came to light, how did Joe (not of the Muscogee Nation) fit in as part of the crew, how Angel is doing (the rogue reporter who is 100% a bad Bitch!), and why the Muscogee political machine was not always wanting the camera on them while Rebecca and Joe were peeling back the onion of this documentary in real time. Zoe Lister-Jones is a bad bitch. She is the writer, director, showrunner, and lead actor in her latest project SLIP now playing on The Roku Channel. We caught up with Zoe earlier this week to discuss this magically surreal, time jumping, orgasmic ride of a TV show. She enlightened us about when she started working on this script, how Buddhism influenced the story line, how important your ride or dies are in every stage of life, and maybe Captain Party puts Erin on the spot in front of Zoe with a question about life. Cool. Thanks to Zoe for hopping back on the mic with us. Welcome to the South By Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas!Holy shit, this interview is a doozy. To our regular listeners, this episode is more of a #BasicBitch than an interview, and at one point the tables were turned and Erin and Ange were the ones receiving questions. Let's just say that we had a meeting of the minds with these ladies, and this is (hopefully) the beginning of a beautiful friendship.Mother of the Dawn is a short film about a female truck driver in Brazil who started having visions of extraterrestrials in the 1950s. These visions led her to start her own community/religion of followers that has over 800,000 members, yet is still relatively unheard of. We were joined by director Janell Shirtcliff and producer Daisy O'Dell, and while our conversation definitely discusses the importance of their short film and how much they cherish this community of people and their beliefs, it also ventures off into the unknown (in the best way possible). Welcome to the South By Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas! We're kicking off our coverage with two powerful short films, Scotty's Vag, and Vibrator Girl.Scotty's Vag explores a night of sorority hazing, and how far one girl is willing to go to fit in. Director Chaconne Martin-Berkowicz sat down with us to talk about her experience with sororities, her apprehensions with the film's title, and the difficulty of shooting a scene that involves jello wrestling.
