Acclaimed wildlife scientist Vanessa Pirotta has been mugged by whales, touched by a baby whale and covered in whale snot (just casually - as you do). Pirotta's enthusiasm and deep knowledge of whales shine through in her book Humpback Highway as she explores a variety of timely topics – from why whale snot and poo are important for us and the ocean to the life cycle of whales, the challenges humans present to these marine giants, and new technologies - so we can see where they swim, listen to them talk and even spy on them underwater. This week at Missing Perspectives, we're keen to platform leading women in STEM - and we couldn't of a better person to interview. This episode was proudly sponsored by NewSouth Books.

This week we had the most wonderful conversation with wildlife scientist, woman in STEMM/STEAM, science communicator, author and vessel operator, Dr Vanessa Pirotta. You're going to love hearing Vanessa's infectious enthusiasm for all things science and science communication.  Vanessa's research uses innovative technologies for wildlife conservation. Vanessa works collaboratively across both marine and terrestrial environments merging cutting edge technology to access animals in unique ways. Most notable works include drones to collect whale snot and the use of computer algorithms and AI for the detection of illegal wildlife trafficking. Vanessa is a passionate and experienced science communicator who plays an important role in society by making science accessible across generations. Vanessa's spoken on the TEDx platform and has been recognized by the Australian Financial Review as one of the top 100 Women of Influence and recently, a 2024 finalist in the Australian's Museums Eureka awards for promoting understanding of science and winner of the 2024 Women's Agenda Leadership Awards Emerging leader in Science. Vanessa is working collaboratively with indigenous knowledge holders such as the Gamay Rangers, to learn more about the marine mammals in our blue backyard but also identifying appropriate ways scientists can respectfully incorporate First Nations perspectives into marine research. Vanessa is also the lead scientist of the citizen science program Wild Sydney Harbour, connecting community with its blue backyard. Vanessa is also a proud children's book author, with her book The Voyage of Whale and Calf, serving as an annual reminder of humpback whale biology and ecology in Australian waters. In 2024, Vanessa also released two additional books; The Humpback Highway: Diving into the mysterious world of whales and a second children's book, Oceans At Night. Vanessa is a highly experienced presenter and was the invited MC for the prestigious Prime Minister's Prizes for Science at Parliament House, Canberra in 2023/24. Send me a messageDr Vanessa Pirotta is a whale scientist, an author, an educator, an entrepreneur and a social media sensation. I read Vanessa's book recently - Humpback Highway - and was captivated by the stories of her work and research in the presence of these majestic and remarkable creatures. I remember visiting beaches in Sydney during the humpack's migratory seasons and being amazed by catching glimpses of their existence out at sea. Over the last thirty years humpbacks have continued to recover their population numbers right around the world - a rare species conservation success story.Vanessa is one of Australia's most recognisable scientists through the work she does both on social media and regular tv appearances. In the last couple of months she was awarded the Winner of the Emerging Leader in Science category of the 2024 Women's Agenda Leadership Awards, hosted the Prime Minister's Prizes for Science for the second time and was a finalist in the Celestion Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science. Vanessa is certainly someone on the move, and getting to spend all this time with her and get to know her a little beyond the whale research and incredible encounters she's had with them was an honour. With all the chat recently in corporate and government circles about the great utopian vision of nature positive, I couldn't help but reflect on the depth and quality of Vanessa's knowledge of a few species that call the ocean home and its relevance to these other conversations. The work done to recover some whale populations here and around the world hasn't come through fantasy nature repair bills or biodiversity markets, but the role of science based protections and restrictions on human behaviour supported by effective enforcement mechanisms. Vanessa's work in helping us better understand whales, their health and their lives points to a broader opportunity for how humans by in large need to get out of the way of non human species and focus on these types of initiatives as opposed to the financialsation and commodification of nature on a species by species basis. What an experience this was. Vanessa is clearly a rising star, and to hear about the radical transformation her life has undergone in just five years was remarkable and testament to her tenacity, passion and strength. It reminded me that it's important to step back and contemplate not so much what we can achieve just today, or this week, but over the course of an entire year, five years, a decade. This path is a long one, one without end, and Vanessa is forging one that hasn't existed before. The November edition of the newsletter is on the theme of Hope - and with Vanessa and her work in understanding whales, I was reminded of the remarkable life and work of Sylvia Earle who for more than 60 years has been researching and communicating about the oceans of this planet. “I hope for your help to explore and protect the wild ocean in ways that will restore the health and, in so doing, secure hope for humankind. Health to the ocean means health for us.”Til next time, thanks for listening.Today's show is delivered with Altiorem. This week the team speak to Dr Vanessa Pirotta, a self-declared ‘whale addict' and author of 'Humpback Highway'. Vanessa talks about her initial attraction to whales at a young age, leading to an indepth study of them during her PHD. What started as a fascination for those mysterious animal she had only ever "seen or heard of in children's books" grows into a career where she has gotten to swim alongside them; and get involved with the nitty-gritty of collecting samples from their snot and exrement to better understand marine-life as a whole. The extraordinary fun - and not so fun - facts of these cetaceans are teased during her conversation, including the direct and indirect ways humans are having an insidious effect on whales, and all sea life. This can all be further explored in her most recent novel 'Humpback Highway'.Unfortunately Josh Kirkman, CEO 'Surfers for Climate' was unable to join the team this week. We hope to have him join us soon to talk about how 'Surfers for Climate' have been honing in on the surf community, in order to try and spread awareness of the different types of human activities causing climate change. We're only halfway through the year and we've already seen 18 attacks, 4 of those in the past 5 weeks. 5 of these attacks have been fatal, when the average is usually 1.8 deaths per year.   On today's episode we're joined by Dr Vanessa Pirotta: wildlife scientist, marine biologist and last week's shark attack victim who loves sharks. Our other guest is Dr Vincent Raoult, a marine ecologist at the University of Newcastle.    Today's news headlines: Covid-19: We'll be paying off the budget hit for 30 years More than half of Victorians not isolating while waiting for Covid-19 test results US President Donald Trump asks Americans to wear masks in major backflip   In today's Briefing we ask: Why there has been a spike in shark attacks in Australia? What are the best approaches to deal with this? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
