This week Nicola and Di chat with the talented and brave Vikki Petraitis. Vikki is best known as a true crime writer and Casefile podcaster, who created The Frankston Murders series. Casefile is one of the most popular true crime podcasts around, topping the Apple charts with millions of downloads per month, so it was a thrill to get to hear some of the incredible stories from Vikki herself. As well as writing 18 books and having a top-rating podcast, Vikki is also a school teacher by day, which is where she has honed her wonderful storytelling abilities.  In this conversation, we dive deep into The Frankston Murders and hear how Vikki still gets a bit spooked to this day about what went on in the suburbs of Melbourne back in the early 90s. Vikki shares how she was out on patrol with police on the night of one of the victims, Natalie Russell's murder, and how that motivated her to tell the story as a local community member. We talk about the way that the police disregarded the evidence at the time and the danger of what happens when women aren't believed.  We also chat about how this book became a Casefile podcast, and the power of podcasting in not only sharing stories, but in some cases, making a real difference and getting laws changed. This was certainly the goal for Vikki - the Casefile team decided to release the podcast in 2023, the year that serial killer Paul Denyer was due for parole, and through their hard work they managed to get his parole bid denied and a law changed in parliament so that he can never apply again.  Vikki shares her theories on why she thinks many women are fascinated by true crime podcasts, her own addiction to writing true crime stories and why she believes that podcasts are one of the most powerful platforms around.  This is such a fascinating conversation with Vikki and we thoroughly enjoyed chatting with her. We hope you love it as much as we did!  Follow Vikki on IG here Buy Vikki's latest book The Unbelieved here  Listen to The Frankston Murders on the Casefile podcast here  Find out more about Vikki's work and true crime books here Follow Nicola and Di on IG hereSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In June 1993, Elizabeth Stevens, 18, was murdered on her way home from the bus stop. Her death began a seven-week reign of terror for the people of Frankston. A serial killer was on the loose. No one was safe, not young mother, Debbie Fream, 22, taken on a trip to the shops, nor Natalie Russell, 17, murdered on her way home from school. The serial killer, Paul Denyer, was captured and sentenced to life in prison. On appeal, he was granted a 30-year minimum sentence. Fast forward 30 years, and Denyer has applied for parole. Award-winning crime writer Vikki Petraitis was on patrol with police the night the final murder took place. She wrote the bestselling book, The Frankston Murders, which has never been out of print. Vikki has revisited the case in a long-form podcast to remind the world why Denyer must never be released. Sexual assault can happen anywhere, but in a small town how hard is it to prove and to get justice. Vikki Petraitis won the Allen and Unwin Crime fiction Prize with her book ‘The Unbelieved'. ‘Decadence' demonstrates Thuy On's delight in playing with language, words and even grammar in poems that are both playful and, at times, evocative.

The Final Draft Great Conversations podcast is all about books, writing and literary culture. We're dedicated to exploring Australian writing, looking into the issues that drive our storytelling to discover more from the books you love. These are the stories that make us who we are. Vikki Petraitis is a writer, presenter, teacher and podcaster. She is well known for her true crime writing and today she is joining me with a new book, The Unbelieved. The Unbelieved is fiction but it is so uncomfortably close to real life, it could be ripped from the headlines. A woman stumbles out of a bar, unsteady on her feet. A man has followed her out but as he grabs at her it's clear he's not there help… A string of drink spiking incidents in bars around Deception Bay points to a serial rapist. So why isn't anyone joining the dots? Detective sergeant Antigone Pollard has seen this before. It's the case that drove her out of Melbourne.  Can she take on the system that says it's all a bit of fun and boys will be boys? Can she help the women of Deception Bay protect themselves? Join me as we discover Vikki Petraitis's The Unbelieved... Final Draft is produced and presented by Andrew Pople Want more great conversations with Australian authors? Kananook railway station is located on the Frankston line in Victoria, about 50 minutes from Melbourne's CBD.  At approximately 10:20pm, on the 11th of July, 1990, a 23-year-old woman named Sarah MacDiarmid can be seen alighting from the train and walking in the direction of the poorly lit car park, where she parked her red Honda Civic that morning.  She is no doubt in a hurry to get home. She has work in the morning, and her train had been running 20 minutes late.  Despite it being late on a Wednesday night, there are people around. They see the woman, with blonde hair, holding a tennis racket.  She crosses the footbridge. Someone will later remember a female voice shouting “Give me back my keys”. We won't know if that voice belongs to Sarah.  Between the footbridge and sliding into the driver's seat of her car, Sarah vanishes into thin air. There are traces that she made it to her vehicle, but someone, or perhaps a group of people, targeted her. But who? And why?  Will we ever know for certain what happened to Sarah MacDiarmid on that night, in the middle of winter, three decades ago? Phillip Island lies just off Australia’s southern coast, about two hours from the city of Melbourne. In 1986, the Cameron family were well known on the island. Fergus Cameron was a founding shareholder of the Phillip Island Grand Prix, but day to day worked on the family farm. He was married to Vivienne Cameron, and the pair had two small children.  One night in September, the body of a 23-year-old woman was found inside her home in what has been described as one of the most horrific crime scenes. And then, another woman went missing. Immediately, police thought they knew what had happened.  But all these years later, there are still unanswered questions. A mysterious phone call. A handbag that was miraculously moved. And blood that revealed something no one was expecting... In 1993, crime writer Vikki Petraitis published her first book The Phillip Island Murder. Twenty-seven years later, she’s working on a podcast with Casefile about the case of Vivienne Cameron’s disappearance and is hoping to finally lay the mystery to rest.   CREDITS Guest: Vikki Petraitis  Host: Jessie Stephens Audio Producer: Ian Camilleri  Executive Producer: Zoe Ferguson CONTACT US Tell us what you think of the show via email at truecrime@mamamia.com.au   Join our closed Facebook community to discuss this episode. The story, aptly called Kill-Dead-Garten won the prestigious Scarlet Stiletto award from Sisters in Crime. From there she’s kept writing and produced two fantastic crime novels - All These Perfect Strangers and Second Sight. Having studied law, Aoife likes to weave the lesser known but no less important aspects of the law into her plots.
