In 1993, fear took hold of Frankston Australia after three women were murdered within just seven weeks. The community was left reeling as police searched for answers, unaware the killer was a 21-year-old local man hiding in plain sight. Paul Denyer didn't just target his victims, he stalked them, studied them, and later told police he'd wanted to kill since he was 14. Today, he's remembered as one of Australia's most disturbing and remorseless serial killers. Parole was a much talked about subject back in 2023 when there was a possibility Paul Charles Denyer could be released from prison after 30yrs behind bars for the brutal, sadistic murders of 3 young innocent women. This was a patreon episode where I explain a little about the parole system, the role of The Parole Board and Community Corrections Victoria in assessing whether someone is suitable for release into the community or too high a risk to community safety.I then share some of my thoughts on Paul Denyer and his obsession with vulnerable women and my hope he is NEVER released. This week Nicola and Di chat with the talented and brave Vikki Petraitis. Vikki is best known as a true crime writer and Casefile podcaster, who created The Frankston Murders series. Casefile is one of the most popular true crime podcasts around, topping the Apple charts with millions of downloads per month, so it was a thrill to get to hear some of the incredible stories from Vikki herself. As well as writing 18 books and having a top-rating podcast, Vikki is also a school teacher by day, which is where she has honed her wonderful storytelling abilities.  In this conversation, we dive deep into The Frankston Murders and hear how Vikki still gets a bit spooked to this day about what went on in the suburbs of Melbourne back in the early 90s. Vikki shares how she was out on patrol with police on the night of one of the victims, Natalie Russell's murder, and how that motivated her to tell the story as a local community member. We talk about the way that the police disregarded the evidence at the time and the danger of what happens when women aren't believed.  We also chat about how this book became a Casefile podcast, and the power of podcasting in not only sharing stories, but in some cases, making a real difference and getting laws changed. This was certainly the goal for Vikki - the Casefile team decided to release the podcast in 2023, the year that serial killer Paul Denyer was due for parole, and through their hard work they managed to get his parole bid denied and a law changed in parliament so that he can never apply again.  Vikki shares her theories on why she thinks many women are fascinated by true crime podcasts, her own addiction to writing true crime stories and why she believes that podcasts are one of the most powerful platforms around.  This is such a fascinating conversation with Vikki and we thoroughly enjoyed chatting with her. We hope you love it as much as we did!  Follow Vikki on IG here Buy Vikki's latest book The Unbelieved here  Listen to The Frankston Murders on the Casefile podcast here  Find out more about Vikki's work and true crime books here Follow Nicola and Di on IG hereSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Thank you to Donna for requesting this episode!*****Content Warning*****It has been theorized by the experts who study serial killers that a killer's first victim often knows the offender or, at the very least, lives nearby. Sometimes they are neighbors or friends of friends, coworkers, or possibly people who attend their church. In 1992 on Claude Street in Seaford, Victoria, Australia, two women were unaware that they were about to be 'baby steps' for the person who would become known as the Frankston Serial Killer. They were his trial run, the middle rung on his escalating ladder of carnage. Within months, Paul Denyer would attack and four women, brutally murdering three.Paul Denyer is seeking parole in 2023, and many don't believe he should ever be released. In June 1993, Elizabeth Stevens, 18, was murdered on her way home from the bus stop. Her death began a seven-week reign of terror for the people of Frankston. A serial killer was on the loose. No one was safe, not young mother, Debbie Fream, 22, taken on a trip to the shops, nor Natalie Russell, 17, murdered on her way home from school. The serial killer, Paul Denyer, was captured and sentenced to life in prison. On appeal, he was granted a 30-year minimum sentence. Fast forward 30 years, and Denyer has applied for parole. Award-winning crime writer Vikki Petraitis was on patrol with police the night the final murder took place. She wrote the bestselling book, The Frankston Murders, which has never been out of print. Vikki has revisited the case in a long-form podcast to remind the world why Denyer must never be released. The Frankston Murders podcast uncovers new material and new victims stalked by Denyer in the lead-up to the killings. Vikki interviews prison guards, police officers, family members, and people caught in the periphery of a serial killer. https://casefilepresents.com/the-frankston-murders

In 1993, Paul Denyer murdered Natalie Russell, Elizabeth Stevens and Deborah Fream in the Frankston area. Denyer had also stalked and terrified women - that's one of the lesser known aspects of his horrendous offending. Now 50, Denyer was sentenced to life in prison without parole, but the sentence was later appealed and reduced to a non-parole period of 30 years, meaning Denyer is eligible for release in 2023.There's a genuine fear from many that Denyer will be released - from the families of Natalie, Elizabeth and Deborah - but also the women who were stalked by Denyer. Our guest for this episode is one of the family members who is speaking up.Jake Blair was 12 days old when his mum Debbie was murdered by Denyer. Kananook railway station is located on the Frankston line in Victoria, about 50 minutes from Melbourne's CBD.  At approximately 10:20pm, on the 11th of July, 1990, a 23-year-old woman named Sarah MacDiarmid can be seen alighting from the train and walking in the direction of the poorly lit car park, where she parked her red Honda Civic that morning.  She is no doubt in a hurry to get home. She has work in the morning, and her train had been running 20 minutes late.  Despite it being late on a Wednesday night, there are people around. They see the woman, with blonde hair, holding a tennis racket.  She crosses the footbridge. Someone will later remember a female voice shouting “Give me back my keys”. We won't know if that voice belongs to Sarah.  Between the footbridge and sliding into the driver's seat of her car, Sarah vanishes into thin air. There are traces that she made it to her vehicle, but someone, or perhaps a group of people, targeted her. But who? And why?  Will we ever know for certain what happened to Sarah MacDiarmid on that night, in the middle of winter, three decades ago? It's a quarter past seven in the evening on Friday, June 11, 1993.  18-year-old Elizabeth Stevens is freezing. She's soaking wet from the rain, her short hair clinging to her neck.  She steps off the bus which she caught from Frankston to Cranbourne Road, Langwarrin, and hurries towards her aunt and uncle's house where she lives. She doesn't know she's being watched. She had spent her Friday evening at Frankston Library on an English assignment. Her goal is to one day join the army and she knows she has to complete this TAFE course in order to get there. That particular June night, the rain is so heavy it's difficult to see. As Elizabeth turns into Paterson Avenue a man jumps at her out of the darkness, dressed in a green army jacket and navy baseball cap. The sound of the rain and the roaring wind drowns out her screams.  She feels what she can only assume is a gun to her head as he drags her along someone's front lawn.  Threatening Elizabeth, the man holds her hand, directing her down Paterson Avenue. Passersby think their interaction looks innocent, not knowing that if Elizabeth doesn't comply the man has threatened to “blow her head off”.  He leads her to Lloyd Park into a clump of bushes.  These would be the last moments of Elizabeth Stevens' life.  Less than an hour afterwards the man responsible for her murder would be sitting inside his warm home, enjoying a roast dinner, waiting for his girlfriend to return home from work.   CREDITS Guest: Vikki Petraitis, author of The Frankston Murders: 25 Years On Host: Jessie Stephens Producer: Gia Moylan Audio Producer: Ian Camileri   CONTACT US Tell us what you think of the show via email at truecrime@mamamia.com.au   Join our closed Facebook community to discuss this episode.
