If you ever find yourself asking “What's left?” you're in good company. Today's left is often indistinguishable from neoliberal centrism. Steve's guests are Simon Winlow and Steve Hall, authors of the book, The Death of the Left: Why We Must Begin from the Beginning Again. They talk about the historical shifts that have led to ideological collapse, disconnection from the working class and the embrace of individualism over collective action. The conversation emphasizes the urgent need for a revival of working-class politics that transcend identity divisions and focus on collective struggles against economic neoliberalism and austerity.Simon Winlow is Professor of Social Sciences at Northumbria University, UK. A fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, his work is particularly well known in the fields of criminology, sociology and contemporary political analysis. He is the author or co-author of the following books: Badfellas (Berg, 2001); Bouncers (Oxford University Press, 2003); Violent Night (Berg, 2006); Criminal Identities and Consumer Culture (Willan, 2008); Rethinking Social Exclusion (Sage, 2012); Riots and Political Protest (Routledge, 2015); Revitalizing Criminological Theory (Routledge, 2015); Rise of the Right (Policy, 2017); Death of the Left (Policy, 2022), and The Politics of Nostalgia (Emerald, 2025). @winlow_s Steve Hall is Emeritus Professor of Criminology at the University of Teesside. Summary In this episode, Christina reflects on the Easter season and shares quotes from saints to inspire and encourage listeners. The main themes include God's love and mercy, the importance of forgiveness, and the need to trust in Jesus. Christina encourages listeners to spend time in thanksgiving after receiving the Eucharist, reflect on the cross and the forgiveness we have received, and repeat the mantra 'Jesus, I trust in you' for peace and hope. The episode concludes with a reminder to begin again with joy and to open our hearts to God's love and mercy. Takeaways The Easter season is an opportunity to reflect on God's love and mercy. Forgiveness is essential for our journey towards holiness. Trusting in Jesus brings comfort, peace, and joy. Reflecting on the cross reminds us of the forgiveness we have received and encourages us to forgive others. Beginning again with joy allows us to let go of the past and embrace the present moment. Sound Bites "Let's meditate on God's love and His mercy." "The essence of Divine Mercy is to trust and live by God's grace." Hearing from a friend about the resources and programming offered by Denise M. Brown I knew I had to meet her and check out her Caregiving Consultant programs for myself as I was just starting my own business at the end of my social work career. In the episode you will hear directly from Denise about her own business and its origins, as well as her caregiving story. First, here's a more information about Denise: Denise supports individuals managing difficult life experiences with coaching, planning and training. Through her work, Denise helps clients find hope, possibilities and a path forward.  Denise began helping individuals who care for a family member in 1990 and launched a business to help them in 1995. She created one of the first online caregiving communities in 1996 which she managed until its sale in 2020. She now develops and delivers training programs for the workplace and for individuals who want to coach family caregivers. More than 400 individuals from eight different countries have enrolled in her training programs offered through her company, The Caregiving Years Training Academy.  Denise developed several concepts, including The Six Caregiving Stages, The 12 Caregiving Fatigues and The 17 Caregiving Systems, which both explain the complexity of a personal caregiving situation and inspire interventions to better support family caregivers. For 18 years, Denise led Lunch and Learn workshops at employers located in the Midwest on behalf of Employee Assistance Programs and Work/Life Benefit companies. Her seminars consistently were rated “Excellent” or “Very Good” by attendees. Her workshops provide insights to help attendees manage their work/life balance, their stress and their caregiving responsibilities.  Denise is the author of several books that provide insights, comfort and hope to those who care, including The Caregiving Years, Your Guide to Navigating the Six Caregiving Stages and After Caregiving Ends, A Guide to Beginning Again. Her free resource, A Workbook for Your Workplace Wellness, helps individuals who care, grieve and work.  Denise began helping her parents in 2004 after her father's bladder cancer diagnosis. Her mom, who had Parkinson's disease, died in August 2022, one year to the date after Denise's brother died. She continues to care for her father who is 91. Next Avenue named Denise a 2017 Influencer in Aging, one of “50 advocates, researchers, thought leaders, innovators, writers and experts who continue to push beyond traditional boundaries and change our understanding of what it means to grow older.” Her insights have been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, US News & World Report, USA Today, SmartMoney.com, Time magazine and Chicago Tribune.  Contact: •  Email: denise@careyearsacademy.com •  Phone: 773-343-6341 Check out these links: •  Caregiving Reflections, a weekly newsletter: https://denisebrown.substack.com/archive •  Caring Our Way: https://join.caringourway.com/ •  The Wall Street Journal: https://www.wsj.com/articles/these-self-care-strategies-can-help-caregivers-cope-with-burnout-11640782803?st=37dob9tjnjt4tke&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

A Word from Our Outpost: Faithful Formation for Catholic Missionary Disciples on Prayer, Evangelization, Scripture, and Disci

It's likely a truism that the statements "This is difficult" and "This is easy" are the two sides of most endeavors-- the beginning and the state of mastery. But instead of seeing difficult things as invitations to the journey toward mastery, we (and perhaps others) often recoil from the difficulty. We talk about beginnings, and beginning well, and setting ourselves up for success in this episode. We also tried recording it visually, so that we could post it on youtube. Wish us luck in that endeavor!Feel free to drop us a line at hello@ouroutpost.org! We did upload it to youtube! https://youtu.be/Y8mM0Z-5lfE

State censorship and cancel culture, trigger warnings and safe spaces, pseudoscience, First Amendment hardball, as well as orthodoxy and groupthink: universities remain a site for important battles in the culture wars. What is the larger meaning of these debates? Are American universities at risk of conceding to mobs and cuddled “snowflake” students and sacrifice the hallowed values of free speech and academic inquiry? Bradford Vivian examines the heated debates over campus misinformation as a language unto itself that confirms existing notions and often provides simple explanations for complex shared problems. In his book, Campus Misinformation: The Real Threat to Free Speech in American Higher Education (Oxford UP), he shows how the free speech crisis on US college campuses has been manufactured through misinformation, distortion, and political ideology, and how campus misinformation is a threat not only to academic freedom but also to civil liberties in US society writ large. In our conversation, Bradford explained how campus speech crises are used – and also how faculty, administrators, students and others can recognize recurring patterns and properly respond, for example to distinguish between abuses of scientific evidence and sound scientific claims in public argument. Bradford Vivian is a professor in the Department of Communication Arts and Sciences at Pennsylvania State University. His research and teaching focuses on theories of rhetoric (or the art of persuasion) and public controversies over memory, history, speech and other issues. Among his books are Commonplace Witnessing: Rhetorical Invention, Historical Remembrance, and Public Culture (Oxford University Press), Public Forgetting: The Rhetoric and Politics of Beginning Again (Penn State Press) and Being Made Strange: Rhetoric beyond Representation (SUNY Press). He is also co-editor, with Anne Teresa Demo, of Rhetoric, Remembrance, and Visual Form: Sighting Memory (Routledge). He has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend and, from the National Communication Association, the James A. Winans-Herbert A. Wichelns Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Rhetoric and Public Address, the Critical/Cultural Studies Division Book of the Year Award, and the Karl R. Wallace Memorial Award. Uli Baer teaches literature and photography as University Professor at New York University. If we listen to the politicians and pundits, college campuses have become fiercely ideological spaces where students unthinkingly endorse a liberal orthodoxy and forcibly silence anyone who dares to disagree. These commentators lament the demise of free speech and academic freedom. But what is really happening on college campuses? Campus Misinformation: The Real Threat to Free Speech in American Higher Education (Oxford UP, 2022) shows how misinformation about colleges and universities has proliferated in recent years, with potentially dangerous results. Popular but highly misleading claims about a so-called free speech crisis and a lack of intellectual diversity on college campuses emerged in the mid-2010s and continue to shape public discourse about higher education across party lines. Such disingenuous claims impede constructive deliberation about higher learning while normalizing suspect ideas about First Amendment freedoms and democratic participation. Taking a non-partisan approach, Bradford Vivian argues that reporting on campus culture has grossly exaggerated the importance and representativeness of a small number of isolated events; misleadingly advocated for an artificial parity between liberals and conservatives as true viewpoint diversity; mischaracterized the use of trigger warnings and safe spaces; and purposefully confused critique and protest with censorship and "cancel culture." Organizations and think tanks generate pseudoscientific data to support this discourse, then advocate for free speech in highly specific ways that actually limit speech in general. In the name of free speech and viewpoint diversity, we now see restrictions on the right to protest and laws banning certain books, theories, and subjects from schools. By deconstructing the political and rhetorical development of the free speech crisis, Vivian not only provides a powerful corrective to contemporary views of higher education, but provides a blueprint for readers to identify and challenge misleading language--and to understand the true threats to our freedoms. Bradford Vivian is Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences and past Director of the Center for Democratic Deliberation at Penn State University. His previous books include Commonplace Witnessing: Rhetorical Invention, Historical Remembrance, and Public Culture (OUP 2017) and Public Forgetting: The Rhetoric and Politics of Beginning Again (2010), which received the Winans-Wichelns Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Rhetoric and Public Address awarded by the National Communication Association. The turn to culture undoubtedly plays a part, but was the left wrong to turn to liberty, as Hall & Winlow argue? How can we turn back to political economy and what would that politics look like? My guest today is Chris Thyberg. It's a pleasure to have Chris back on the show after our first conversation on episode 44.  Chris is the founder and principal of The Serving Way, a leadership coaching practice dedicated to partnering with experienced and emerging leaders in all sectors as they pursue great purposes for results that really matter. It is his calling and privilege to journey alongside clients as they develop new capacities to achieve exceptional performance and transformative action. Chris has been traveling the serving way of leadership for more than 35 years as a senior executive, a team builder, a facilitator, and an executive leadership coach.  Chris lives in Pittsburgh with his wife, Leslie. They love to eat Leslie's amazing cooking, laugh a lot, travel, and hang out with their grown kids and partners who all live nearby. No grandkids … yet … but four furry grand-dogs to look after when needed. In our conversation today, Chris talks about The Art of Beginning Again.   Sometimes this idea of the art of beginning again is in relation to starting something significant – a job, moving to somewhere new, a new career.  Sometimes, getting out of bed in the morning is a challenge and we can apply this idea of the art of beginning again to the mundane acts of daily life. If you've ever felt self-doubt, been stressed about changes and transitions and transformations, put pressure on yourself to get things right on the first try, I think you'll appreciate this perspective of always being a beginning and always beginning. There's a lot of grace and compassion and spaciousness in the wisdom Chris shares today. Thank you, Chris, for coming back, for sharing more of your journey, and for encouraging us all to adopt this practice of beginning again and again and again and again…. Poem shared by Chris: For a new beginning by John O'DonohueConnect with Chris: LinkedInWebsite  Make Life Less Difficult

I LOVE acronyms, and 2 of the best I've heard, pertaining to the word "fear", are as follows: Fuck Everything And Run OR Face Everything And Recover. Although I like to think I now live most days practicing the latter, it has NOT always been that way ;) Much of my early life was DEFINITELY spent running for the hills!  I'm grateful every day now for the experience that took place 22 years ago which led me to a path of recovery and self discovery! Had my life not become such a shitpile I most assuredly never would have chosen that path on my own ;) And it's that path that has led me to a pretty constant practice of Facing Everything And Recovering!  That being said, I OF COURSE still have PLENTY of fearful moments, and imagine I will for the rest of my days, BUT as you'll hear in this episode: "I can be fearful and still do the thing!!!"  Join me as I share how fear has recently been fucking with me, and hear how I'm opting to NOT let it stop me on my continued journey toward authenticity ;) Lifeline (988lifeline.org) Crisis Intervention | HopeLine (hopeline-nc.org) CALL OR TEXT: 919-231-4525 | 877-235-4525 Eagle Valley Hope Center: Your Hope Center YOUR 24/7 SUPPORT LINE: (970) 306-4673 Life Love Music & Space Travel (lifelovemusicandspacetravel.com) Need some conversation boosting material? Every day we have an opportunity to start over—to dig our heels in, extract what is working in our lives and give ourselves permission to release what is not. As simple as that sounds, the radical act of starting over is far more entitled and can be paralyzing for some. Yet, no matter how many roadblocks we put in place or experience in our lives, the truth is: that each of us has the power to start over and begin again, no matter our circumstances, our age, or any other excuse we may use to keep ourselves trapped in the small boxes we were never meant to live within. This week we're taking a one-on-one deep dive into starting over, how we must confront what makes us uncomfortable, we'll move through a plan on how to start over in a grounded, centered, and mindful way, and then we'll uncover how starting over leads us into self-love and inner peace in ways we never thought were possible. So, let's shift our perspectives and ability to elevate our lives through a tested and grounded blueprint to get there… Key Takeaways: 00:00 Introduction 01:45 Four questions that often get our minds thinking about a need for change 03:20 A significant truth about starting over that removes the negative connotation generally associated with the full stops in our lives   05:11 Painting the picture of starting over, illuminating your path 07:22 The pre-work necessary for developing a plan for change 15:14 Step 1 in starting over: Accept What Is 17:10 Step 2: Reevaluate your value system 20:01 Step 3: Get down to the why and how 21:00 An example of why understanding the “why” behind the change is so necessary 24:34 Step 4: Take stock of your successes and perceived failures—am I counting my blessing or failures    27:20 Step 5: Work up the courage to engage and commit to the change 28:21 Change your inner language 30:16 Step 6: Check in with yourself      31:30 Step 7: Celebrate your progress 33:19 How this plan creates self-love   Sure, sometimes we have to walk through hell to get where we want to be, but when we take control and do the work, heal, and create a plan, we turn the lights on in our lives. We move from the dark rooms, the space where things are unknown, scary, anxiety-ridden, and filled with tripping hazards, to spaces where we see our path, the light is radiant, and everything we need and want is first met by ourselves and then others. Welcome change. Welcome discomfort because you always have the ability to turn on the light switch. You've got this, girl, and this is an essential part of getting your life together! Tune in to hear my conversation with Scott Ford, co-founder of Legado Family and host of The Way2Wealth podcast. Scott's entrepreneurial spirit began as a young child when he would perform magic shows at friends' birthday parties. And, from there, it has unfolded into the successful businessman he is today. Early in Scott's career as an insurance salesman, he witnessed many business owners lack the knowledge of money management and miss out on opportunities to maximize their earning potential. Because of this, Scott made it his mission to help other business owners pursue true wealth to experience financial freedom. Today, Scott is Managing Director, Partner & Wealth Advisor of Carson Wealth in Hagerstown, MD and Johnson City, TN. He is a Registered Financial Consultant (RFC) and has been an active Financial Technical Analyst since 2005. His firm specializes in comprehensive wealth management with his Way2Wealth® proprietary process. His talents don't stop there. He has also published three books including Financial Jiu-Jitsu: A Fighter's Guide to Conquering Your Finances, The Widow's Wealth Map: Six Steps to Beginning Again, and the New York Times Bestseller, The Sustainable Edge: 15 Minutes a Week to a Richer Entrepreneurial Life. Scott is living proof that with a determined mindset, entrepreneurial and family success is possible.

“Can you discern between resistance and fear and strategic changes in direction? …not giving up and changing direction because something is hard or scary, yet being willing to change your mind even when something you really wanted to pursue is no longer a good investment of your precious resources?” Reflect, refresh, and recalibrate The change in seasons reminds us that it's time to pause and reflect on what's behind and what's ahead of us. In organizational life we do quarterly reviews to assess progress and determine what we might need to stop, start and keep doing. Where do we need to step on the gas? Where should we apply brakes? Spring (our current season in the Northern Hemisphere) is symbolic of new beginnings. Can you find this feeling of a fresh start and new growth in yourself? Respond with Agility In a constantly changing world, it's not a problem to adjust our approach or our vision – it's a strategic response. We reflect on our commitments in order to respond with agility. In this discussion, we're going to: Pause in a deliberate way to connect with what's important to us and our work in the world Locate ourselves in a broader context, beyond our goals Take the opportunity to apply discernment to our earlier planning: do our original commitments still make good strategic sense? Are we placing our efforts on the right priorities?   This is a worthwhile practice to do individually and with your team. You can do this activity anywhere, anytime you have a spare moment, mentally or with a journal.   Answer these questions quarterly: Who is the person (or team) you are committed to becoming? What is the impact you want to make? How are you doing on your goals? What adjustments do you want to make? How are your systems, processes, and practices supporting your intended impact?   Links & resources: Beginning Again 2022 https://mailchi.mp/68e183fd18bf/beginningagain2022 Podcast (source of Locate Yourself) Tami Simon & Lynne Twist on Sounds True:  An Evolutionary Leap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yV3BwmYkOCU Article: How Regular Rhythms Unlock Powerful Growth https://www.monkhouseandcompany.com/blog/how-regular-rhythms-unlock-powerful-growth/ Origin of Easter:  https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-04-15/the-origins-of-easter-from-pagan-roots-to-chocolate-eggs/8440134 To discuss executive coaching, leadership development program design, and workshop facilitation, please visit: https://rise-leaders.com/contact-info/

Do you want to know the main ingredients for a successful life? In this episode of the Happy Hustle Podcast, I have Scott Ford, a serial entrepreneur, and author. Scott shares his four-piece framework, which is being healthy, wealthy, wise, and happy. He also shares his financial strategies for managing businesses and building a family legacy that will last and grow for generations. Scott's entrepreneurial spirit began as a young child when he would perform magic shows at friends' birthday parties. From there, it has unfolded into the successful businessman he is today.  His father's philosophy that small businesses and entrepreneurship are the backbones of the economy triggered him to create the business mindset that has helped him help countless others. Early in his financial career as an insurance salesman, Scott saw that many of the business owners he served didn't know how to manage money and thus did not experience true freedom in their lives. His own father was a successful businessman, but unfortunately, he never found financial freedom and often worried about money. This led Scott to devote his life to helping business owners pursue true wealth. Today, Scott is a Managing Director, Partner, and Wealth Advisor at Carson Wealth, serving entrepreneurs, small business owners, executives, and families. The firm specializes in comprehensive wealth management using its Way2Wealth proprietary process. His personal and proactive approach is designed to bring clarity and simplicity to the complex issues of financial management. He is also the co-founder and author of Legado Family, which helps families upgrade their relationships, enhance lasting ties, and strengthen bonds. He has published three books, including Financial Jiu-Jitsu: A Fighter's Guide to Conquering Your Finances, The Widow's Wealth Map: Six Steps to Beginning Again, and the New York Times Bestseller, The Sustainable Edge: Fifteen Minutes a Week to a Richer Entrepreneurial Life.  If you need help with your financial planning and want to learn more about comprehensive wealth management, reach out to Scott at https://www.carsonwealth.com/locations/hagerstown-md-leitersburg-pike/   In this episode, we cover: [00:09:06:13] Pairing ancient wisdom with modern science [00:16:11:12] Be healthy, wealthy, wise, and happy [00:31:39:16] Do you have clean numbers in your business?
