On this episode of the Teaching Middle School ELA podcast, Caitlin, Jessica, and Megan have a candid conversation about the shortcomings they noticed collectively between their individual experiences earning their degrees or certifications in education. Their revelations unveil a large gap in learning happening for teachers prior to stepping into their classrooms. You'll hear that the single most impactful lesson they wish they had mastered before stepping into their first year as a classroom teacher is how to batch plan lessons rather than focusing on creating individual units in isolation. This skill of creating a roadmap of standards for a larger span of time actually provides teachers with a guide to follow throughout the year so that their individual units or resources have intentionality and purpose that in turn guarantees actual student growth throughout the school year. Developing a long term plan (a.k.a. Batch Plans) allows teachers to avoid the cycle of jumping from boring textbook lessons to browsing endlessly online during their weekends or re-inventing entire units on their personal time. When teachers avoid the cycle of planning day-to-day, they'll also avoid burnout! You'll walk away with new insights on the benefits of avoiding burnout; including keeping great teachers in the classroom supporting students for years to come! The mind likes to cling to things. It thinks life is linear. My intention recently has been to follow my bliss at the moment. One of the most powerful steps you can make in your evolution is letting go of thinking life is linear. Each and every moment there is subtle guidance that is unique to you. Learning to trust that feeling takes practice. If you don’t listen to it, the mind will default back to what is familiar (the known). In my case, if I didn’t listen to this feeling I’d probably still be sitting in an office right now doing tax returns and not on a beautiful rooftop looking at the ocean. Trusting the unknown requires a reset of your relationship to fear. For me, it meant building a stronger relationship with myself. When I trust myself and life, fear doesn’t control me. I become free to follow my bliss moment to moment without limitation. If you know your relationship to fear is holding you back and you’re ready to follow your bliss, send me a dm or click the link in my bio to apply for my upcoming coaching program where I’ll be guiding a group through the exact process on how to build a stronger relationship with yourself and life. Moment to moment life is feeding us the next breadcrumb in our journey of expansion. Our ability to trust the direction life is taking us depends on the connection we have with ourselves. The journey to knowing yourself starts when you decide you are willing to face pain & fear instead of hiding from it. Our earlier childhood traumas are what create this resistance to fear. Once we get old enough, we wrap stories and beliefs around our trauma. The resistance to feeling heavy emotions stacks energy and it blocks our system from functioning freely. In this weekly lesson, I share why unprocessed emotional pain from our past is the real reason for self-doubt and low self-worth. AND how you can start to move past the resistance. The pathway to your fullest expressions begins when you stop looking OUT and start exploring WITHIN. If self worth is something you’ve be struggling with DM me and I’ll let you know how I can support. This last week I noticed some shifts in my energy. Life was pulling back inward. I’ve noticed certain patterns that show up in my life when energy gets stuck in my body. Knowing your patterns of existence is crucial. They will show up in key moments just before you level up. In today’s lesson I discuss: - How to know if energy is trapped in your body - How I processed my energy block - Letting go of controlling the inner process - The importance of remembering who you are - The main practices I use to support me in letting go of stuck energy If you resonate with what I’m sharing send me a DM, let me know what insights you took from this week’s lesson. After returning home to Perth from time spent over east, I’ve integrated some important lessons I wanted to share in today’s lesson: Knowing the season that you’re in - Is it expansion or contraction? Why surrendering and allowing nature to make your decisions is the true path to purpose Finding & Trusting your path in life Finding the rhythm of your heart Finding coherence and oneness To find your unique path you MUST disconnect from the opinions and teachings of others. Finding your flow is more about getting clear on what you’re not. I’m noticing life is an exploratory process that’s ultimately leading us back home to nature. Lockdown Lessons On Sunday, Perth began a 5-day lockdown. I feel this isolation time is exactly what we needed. Time to slow down, process, reflect, plan and embody everything we’ve been learning. I’m continually amazed at how life can subtly direct me into the areas that need my attention. Lockdown is a time to look in. What type of action is needed? Now is the time for celebration, reflection and preparation. As we downshift into the new year, it’s crucial to take stock of where you’re at emotionally, physically and mentally. Reflecting on how we showed up in 2020 allows us perspective to notice the patterns and inner shadows this year has been trying to reveal. This year was a collective purge. It’s so important to acknowledge what we’re no longer willing to tolerate in ourselves. The vision for the near-earth is being birthed in the internal shifts that we make. The standards that we choose to live by. And the integrity we uphold. I invite you to declare that 2021 will be the biggest and best year of your life! In this bonus episode, I share some insights from my time in solitude. Last week, I stepped away from coaching and went inward. Sometimes I catch myself judging the cycles of life. I judge myself for not feeling my best. Doing this is like judging winter for being cold. It’s natural and essential that we go through seasons of change. Learning to trust that when you’re feeling down, there is no point trying to force things. Honouring what I feel has been one of the biggest lessons for me. In today’s life, I share insights into how to navigate the seasons of change. Trusting your cycles. Taking your hands off the wheel and letting life drive. Life will always take us to the destination we’re meant to be at, we MUST learn to stop judging the route it takes. Evolution begins by asking: 1. What do you I want? 2. Who do I need to become to achieve that? The hardest part about the becoming process is letting go of who you used to be. Creating a new way of being feels like pushing a stationary car. Initially, it requires a lot of effort. Once the car gets moving you generate momentum. Once you decide to change, and you start to feel the Shifts, life creates feedback loops that will support your becoming process. What daily habits do you need to install to support you in becoming the person you need to be? The hardest part will always be the beginning. Stay consistent, be discipline and anything becomes possible. “We’re not afraid of the unknown, we’re afraid of letting go of what we know.” When we let go of what we know, we open up to experiencing life in ways that expand our being. This week, I invite you to call in experiences that support you in going outside of your regular routine. Can you infuse variety into your life? Can you have more fun and adventure? I’ve noticed that variety/newness shows up when I cultivate a high level of discipline. Discipline provides inner freedom for flexibility in life. Without discipline, you float through life and it takes longer to materialize your vision. Discipline + variety = meaningful life. This week, I continued to observe the business: 1. The inner business of life (dealing with thoughts & emotions) 2. Outer business (dealing with external circumstances) I’m always reminding people to take care of the inner business FIRST. I’ve noticed how much life shifts when you make your evolution a priority. We do this by being EXTREMELY selective about where we direct our TIME and ENERGY. Your life externally will grow through time and energy, but if you don’t face your emotional pain and give that time and energy your stuck. If you’re holding onto a memory from the past that you know is painful, but you’re unwilling to face it, you’re blocking yourself from evolving. “The doorway to the next level of your growth is always right in front of you, the price of entry is your mind.” Often we are looking for the magic pill. The mind wants a quick fix. However, the quick fix doesn’t give us growth. Facing our emotions is short term pain for long term gain. Knowing what you need based on how you feel requires training. Training your self-awareness - like training a muscle, it requires commitment, discipline and practice. Prioritize the training of your self-awareness and you will become more attuned to what your body needs. It can be easy to forget that we’re being guided. When you have an inner knowing that life is taking care of you it creates freedom. This week, I took some lessons from this guidance. Life has a grand plan that once we surrender to it, we open up to receiving support in ways we can’t see. Some lessons I share in the video: - switch up your routine - be flexible like water - life level ups create energy shifts that cause ripples - start conversations - learn from nature Trust the direction life is pulling you. Transformation is uncomfortable, which is why most people don’t evolve. They get addicted to the comfort zone. They’re afraid to explore their edges. Deep transformation requires a commitment to getting uncomfortable. Trusting the direction life is pulling you is the ultimate test of faith and trust. Life will show you the areas where you need work. Most people are afraid to put in the work; they’re afraid to get uncomfortable; they’re dependant on external comforts. I invite you to look at the stories you create that get in your way of doing the inner and outer work. Underneath those stories is your opportunity to become free. Now is the time. This week, while out on a hike with my friends, I came to some really important realizations that I wanted to share. I reflected on how nature guides us when we surrender to it and the importance of strengthening your ability to concentrate. This weekend, I took some time to slow down and reconnect with my soul mission. For a long time, I had no clue what my purpose was. I’ve realized that your purpose is about discovering what life wants to express through you. I believe we each have a unique soul mission that we’ve been put on this earth to fulfill upon. For me growing up my uniqueness was suppressed; working in a corporate job felt like my soul was being crushed. To discover my soul’s mission required a process of unravelling the parts of myself that felt unworthy of LIVING that mission. The inner work is a transformational process of unlearning the beliefs that get in your way of you being a vehicle of expression. Once your vehicle of expression is discovered, it’s then your purpose to put that out to the world. This is true abundance. Giving your gifts, allows more energy to come back. If you want some help discovering your gifts. Send me a dm, And I’ll help you let go of what’s getting in your way. When I heard about the passing of close friend and soul brother, Nathan De Abreu, I went and picked up his favourite book that he recommended to me. I turned to the first page and it read the following:“I know that there is a reason for everything. Yet perhaps at the moment that an event occurs we have neither the insight nor the foresight to comprehend the reason, but with time and patience, it will come to light” (Brian Weiss - Many Lives, Many Masters). Last week, I got to honour Nathan’s life - and this week, I wanted to share some of the lessons I found in his death and the ultimate reminder death brings. I've learned that this moment is all we have and it’s our relationship to this moment that shapes the quality of our life. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, but right now is. So cherish the now, and appreciate life. This podcast episode, recorded on July 12, 2020, is part of my IGTV series called “Weekly Lessons,” where I chat solo about some of the things I’ve learned over the week. I’ll be releasing these as a video on my Instagram every week, and every Tuesday as a podcast.
