85. Politics That Works: A proven way becoming a powerful movement, with Cathy McGowan AO

Cathy McGowan was the first female independent MP to sit on the Australian parliamentary cross bench. She was elected in 2013 to the federal seat of Indi, which had been an entrenched conservative party seat for 74 years. At the following election, in 2016, she increased her majority, despite the Liberal/National Party coalition going hard to reclaim it. When Cathy bowed out of parliament ahead of the 2019 election, Indi again made Australian political history with the election of Dr Helen Haines as its second successive independent woman MP. And it's all been achieved on the back of a still growing community movement, now far from limited to Indi. This is one of the greatest political stories going in Australia, and arguably the world. It's a story about how community-minded people are getting elected, getting represented, and getting the outcomes that representation can and should get. In that sense, it's also a story about how politics in this country – and arguably further afield – can be transformed for the better. Cathy has a vision that in 10 years this transformation could realistically be achieved, starting with the next federal election. Cathy is now helping to leverage this capacity right across the country. She wrote a book last year, and the enormous reaction to it prompted the first National Convention of Community-Minded Independents earlier this year. Organisers were blown away when 300 people from more than half of Australia's federal electorates turned up. So with no shortage of people up for this, and more supportive infrastructure developing, a proven way is becoming a powerful movement - with genuine representation, responses to climate and biodiversity challenges, wellbeing economics, reconciliation and regenerative practices on the cards. “It is past the time of sitting back, hoping that others will do something. It is time to turn up, speak up and step up. The outcomes are worth it. The nation needs it.” – Cathy McGowan. More on Cathy: Cathy got the Australian Bureau of Statistics to count women's unpaid domestic and farming work in the 1990's. During her time as a politician Cathy actively worked in Parliament to develop policy around regional development, constitutional change for first nations people and a solution to the indefinite detention of asylum seekers. In 2019 she was awarded The Accountability Round Table award for political integrity. She is an Officer in the Order of Australia, a Churchill fellow and lives very happily on her farm in the Indigo Valley in NE Victoria. This episode was recorded on Thursday 27 May 2021. 127: Removing Fear from Allopathic Cancer Care through Holistic Support - with Cathy Biase

BiOptimizers - Awesome Health Podcast

No one escapes the cancer conversation.  Everyone gets touched by cancer at some point. The latest statistics say 1 out of every 2 of us will experience cancer either directly or through a loved one diagnosed with cancer.  The word “cancer” brings immediate fear to people. Some don’t even want to speak the word and say “the c-word” or “the big-c” instead.  Our guest Cathy Biase knows firsthand the fears people struggle through when they get a cancer diagnosis, go through allopathic treatments, and then return to their previous life once it’s over. Cathy has been through this herself, but she is also a Certified Professional Cancer Coach. She specializes in the functional application of nutrition to get to the root cause of health issues whenever possible to improve chronic disease. Cathy focuses primarily on helping people going through cancer care. Her goal is to optimize her client’s ability to heal and recover.  Many of Cathy’s clients who are doing chemotherapy ask her if the chemo is working because they report that they don’t feel that bad. This is precisely what Cathy loves to hear because it captures what her mission is all about - helping people reduce their fears and getting through allopathic cancer treatments feeling better than expected.  Cathy is the host of a radio show called The Health Hub that is also available as a podcast, where she and her guests talk about integrative health. Cathy also teaches at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition.  Cathy educates people on nutritional support for cancer patients, managing side effects of allopathic cancer care, and the Microbiome’s link to health and immunity.   In this podcast, we cover: How Cathy helps people psychologically move through the various stages from diagnoses to healing The importance of the microbiome for cancer recovery Cathy’s “low stress” approach to nutrition and food prep for cancer patients The role of exercise in a cancer patient’s recovery Cathy’s approach to detoxification, particularly the liver as preparation for chemotherapy More on Cathy’s science-based approach to “stacking the deck your favor” before, during, and after cancer treatment The diagnosis that shaped her destiny Cathy spent the early years of her career working in business, including a small family business. Soon after that business was closed down, Cathy noticed a lump in her breast.  She was quickly diagnosed with breast cancer.  When Cathy went to her gym to tell them she would be pulling back her membership — something profound occurred: three people she knew at this gym strongly encouraged her not to give up exercise - despite the doctors’ advice to cut out her activity. Her friends said, “you are not going to do that. We need you to exercise. We want you to take these supplements.” Suddenly, Cathy had three people working with her in three different areas. This coaching made a significant impact on her, as her cancer treatments went incredibly well.  Cathy noticed that many others who were getting chemotherapy along with her did not have as smooth of an experience. One lady ended up in the hospital, which prompted Cathy to analyze why her treatment went better than others.  Cathy went back to school and earned a certification with the national association of professional cancer coaches. Her new journey to helping other people deal with cancer was underway.  What does Cathy, the nutritionist, recommend for a cancer patient’s diet? Cathy understands that each person is unique and has unique needs. So she starts there.  The foundation of her nutritional approach to cancer care is the microbiome. She helps educate her clients on what the microbiome is, how it affects your health, and how to take care of it. The microbiome is something doctors still are not attending to, and many are not any more knowledgeable about it than most laypeople.  Cathy also gets her clients to increase their fiber intake, begin eating (or increase) the intake of fermented foods and add more color into their diet. She also likes to add probiotics if possible. Be sure to discuss these factors between the patient and their doctor before implementation.  The proper time to eat is also a part of Cathy’s coaching. She also talks with each client about body cycles and circadian rhythms.  There is so much more to Cathy’s cancer coaching - you need to listen to this episode to get all the nuggets of wisdom she brings to this topic. If you know someone facing a cancer diagnosis, please share this podcast episode with them. Cathy makes a difference in the lives of those she serves.  Cathy also has a ton of tips on ways you can “stack the deck” in your favor to avoid a cancer diagnosis. Be sure to tune it. Wade asks all the right questions, and this conversation is quite encouraging despite the “scary” topic! Check out this episode - cancer coaching could save the life of someone you love.  Episode Resources:  Cathy’s Website The Health Hub podcast Cathy on Instagram Cathy on Twitter Cathy on Facebook Integrative Cancer Nutrition Method 7 Day Plant-Based Immune Supporting Meal Plan Natural Approaches to Chemo $100 off with download

When Cathy surprised us with a message one of the thoughts she shared was how we are each on our own journey and should never compare ourselves to others. Prepared for the Bridegroom – December 16, 2018 – Steve MillerIt's true – the shadows are lengthening; the day is drawing to a close.· It's the end of 2018. Didn't we just start 2018? For that matter, didn't we just start the 21st century? And now we're almost a fifth of the way through it?· Jesus said, “Yes, I am coming soon.” That was almost 2,000 years ago.· Our babies are in all in high school and college. Many of you are grandparents (or a great-grandparents). The new buildings here are thirty years old. You've got grey hair. I have no hair.· Besides the passing of time, we see Biblical signs that the end of the age is nearing. There are earthquakes, wars, and rumors of war. We see Christians hated by all nations because of Christ. There's an increase of wickedness, and the love of many has grown cold (Matthew 24). Many are going here and there, and knowledge has increased (Daniel 12:4).John 9:4 – 4As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. The thought that our time here is limited can bring sadness, anxiety, or regret, but for us, God's people, that night will be a glorious one: the wedding feast of the Lamb! Our Bridegroom is coming!Revelation 19:6-9 – 6Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. 7Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. 8Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.” (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God's holy people.)9Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”Revelation 21:1-4What an awesome future is coming for God's people, His Bride! But how should a bride prepare to be wed to her husband? The most important thing is to be pure and faithful to Him. But any honest person will realize that we have not been completely pure and faithful to Christ. That's why the Gospel is good news for us:1 Corinthians 6:9-11 – 9Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. Our Bridegroom has made us pure. Grace makes us pure and empowers us to live faithfully. Have you accepted his grace? Have you by repentance, faith, and baptism, exchanged your unrighteousness for His purity? Do you continue to daily walk in that grace so that you may live your life faithfully for Him in this world?Consider the words of one of the Christmas carols we sing the most:O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, Born the King of angels; O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.Peter gives advice to wives about how to win over and be beautiful to their husbands. We can apply some of these principles to our preparation for our eternal union with Christ:1 Peter 3:1-6The key word there for us is to submit ourselves in obedience to Christ as Lord. Allow the Holy Spirit in us to produce His fruit which is true beauty in Jesus' sight. Do not let any kind of fear sway you from trusting obedience to Him.1 Corinthians 10:13-14 – 13No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 14Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. The Song of Solomon is reflects Christ's feelings for His redeemed and sanctified people:Song of Solomon 4:9 – You have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride; you have stolen my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace. The Lord is passionate about His relationship with us, and He wants us to grow more deeply in love with Him as we live out our days in this life. When Cathy and I were engaged, we spent just about all of our time outside of sleep and work time with each other. We talked about the future; we made plans for the wedding and our home together; I ate dinner with her and her family just about every evening. But most importantly, we spent a lot of time adoring each other. We were both singularly focused on each other. Similarly, the Lord wants our eyes to be fixed captivatedly on Him, getting to know Him more and more.Hebrews 10:19-251 Chronicles 16:29 – Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. The Lord is calling us to draw near to Him, to fix our gaze on Him, to increasingly see and know Him in all His goodness, splendor, and holiness. Spend time worshiping Him, talking to Him, listening to Him, meditating on His words and deeds. Bring all kinds of offerings to Him, for what we invest in, we will increasingly love and be devoted to. Be excited about our Lord Jesus, for the day is soon approaching when we will be united with Him in our eternal home!

CASE Smart Impact Capital is a toolkit that helps you to raise capital that aligns with your needs. In 1992, Cathy Clark had a conversation with Lloyd Morrissett, the co-founder of Sesame Workshop. Lloyd told her “Change happens when the right people with the right idea and the right capital come together at the right time.” This idea stuck with Cathy and has guided her career since. When Cathy first appeared on Social Entrepreneur in January 2016, she said. “It isn’t enough to have a good idea, to want to help people, but you have to have an organization to do it, and eventually that organization needs capital. And that has become the theme of my career.” Cathy Clark is the faculty director for the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE) at the Duke Fuqua School of Business. She runs the Initiative on Impacting Investing. Cathy and the team at CASE have developed a resource to help social entrepreneurs to be more efficient and effective in raising investment capital. The solution is called CASE Smart Impact Capital. It is a toolkit that contains short videos, downloadable resources, spreadsheets, and more. The modules are bite-sized and flexible. You can jump to any section at any time to match where you are on your fundraising journey. CASE Smart Impact Capital was developed over a two-year period, while working with partner organizations such as MIT, Stanford, USAID, Uncharted, and Spring. In this interview, Cathy takes the listeners from the theoretical basis of impact investing through a description of CASE Smart Impact Capital. If you want to jump ahead, leap to 15:50 in the interview. We didn’t get to everything we wanted to talk about, so we’ve put together a short Bonus episode, which you can find here. Social Entrepreneurship Quotes from Cathy Clark “The term impact investing was coined almost ten years ago.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “Anyone who is investing is taking their dollar and putting it into a capitalist system, where that dollar has an impact.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “It’s basically, people voting with their dollars.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “Anyone who has an investment account is already investing in an outcome.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “We live in a finite set of resources. The planet earth is not infinite.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “Unlimited growth within a resource-constrained environment simply does not make sense.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “We have to tilt capitalism in a slightly different direction.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “I teach at a business school because I believe business has the largest leverage point.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “At CASE, we call it leaping the chasm. Other people call it the pioneer gap.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “I’ve been looking at this for over 20 years.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “What I saw was completely demoralizing.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “We really wanted to build this around the needs of entrepreneurs.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “We have a template or a tool, where you make a decision, and you move on.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “We wanted to make this modular and easy.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “We created a triage process.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “Most of our entrepreneurs had the wrong list.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact “The stakes are really high.” @cathyhc, @CASESmartImpact Social Entrepreneurship Resources: CASE Smart Impact Capital: https://casesmartimpact.com The Center for Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE) at Duke University:https://centers.fuqua.duke.edu/case/ Cathy Clark on Twitter:https://twitter.com/cathyhc Book: Crazy Good Advice: 10 Lessons Learned from 150 Leading Social Entrepreneurs: https://tonyloyd.com/book

In a programme first broadcast in 2017, Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Emily Bronte (1818-1848) and her only novel, published in 1847 under the name 'Ellis Bell' just a year before her death. It is the story of Heathcliff, a foundling from Liverpool brought up in the Earnshaw family at the remote Wuthering Heights, high on the moors, who becomes close to the young Cathy Earnshaw but hears her say she can never marry him. He disappears and she marries his rival, Edgar Linton, of Thrushcross Grange even though she feels inextricably linked with Heathcliff, exclaiming to her maid 'I am Heathcliff!' On his return, Heathcliff steadily works through his revenge on all who he believes wronged him, and their relations. When Cathy dies, Heathcliff longs to be united with her in the grave. The raw passions and cruelty of the story unsettled Emily's sister Charlotte Bronte, whose novel Jane Eyre had been published shortly before, and who took pains to explain its roughness, jealousy and violence when introducing it to early readers. Over time, with its energy, imagination and scope, Wuthering Heights became celebrated as one of the great novels in English. The image above is of Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff and Merle Oberon as Cathy on the set of the Samuel Goldwyn Company movie 'Wuthering Heights', circa 1939. With Karen O'Brien Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford John Bowen Professor of Nineteenth Century Literature at the University of York and Alexandra Lewis Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Aberdeen Producer: Simon Tillotson.

Before, when Cathy would tell someone what she did, she would say, “I teach women how to listen to their bodies as the true source of wisdom.” It’s beautiful, flowery language. And it sounds wise and metaphorical. But unfortunately, it wasn’t language that helped her ideal clients understand if they needed what she had to offer. When Cathy came to me, we got underneath her tendency to overthink the words she used. Which led us to choosing a more specific niche, gave her more tangible language to express herself, and helped her finally connect with the people who needed her most. In this episode, you’ll have a behind-the-scenes look into how Cathy stopped overthinking and started putting herself out there to be seen and get clients. “Understanding how to express what I do has given me the confidence to show up more.” - Cathy Cochrane Announcements: Are you a new coach who is ready to help others but doesn’t have the biz know-how in place?
