284: Healing Addiction Now - with Jason Giles

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2025 103:59

Dr. Jason Giles, a board-certified addiction medicine expert, former anesthesiologist, and a person who has personally battled and overcome substance addiction, recently appeared on the *Awesome Health Podcast* by BiOptimizers. With over 27 years of medical experience and leadership in managing 40 addiction treatment centers, Dr. Giles offers an honest and compassionate view into addiction and recovery.  Addiction isn't just a medical condition, but a human challenge impacting all facets of life, from drugs and alcohol to screen time and food. These behaviors often serve as emotional coping mechanisms, hijacking the brain's reward system and substituting pleasure for well-being. Modern Addiction Triggers Substance use is not new, but the availability and potency of substances and stimuli have changed. Modern addictions are amplified by 24/7 access, social pressures, and chemically engineered substances that overstimulate neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine. Addiction isn't a lack of willpower, but a rewiring of the brain.  Substance use builds tolerance, creating a cycle of withdrawal, craving, and temporary relief. "Addiction is when we begin treating withdrawal with the very thing causing the problem," says Dr. Giles. This makes addiction chemical, emotional, and behavioral. The Journey Through Addiction Dr. Giles simplifies addiction into three stages: Fun, Fun with Problems, and Just Problems. It begins as an enhancement, then consequences mount, and eventually, the behavior continues despite harm. This trajectory isn't limited to substances, as emotional eating or overworking can follow the same path.  Raised in an alcoholic household, Dr. Giles became a successful anesthesiologist, but carried an internal void. Medical access led to experimentation, and Fentanyl became his drug of choice. An intervention led him to a recovery program with a 95% success rate. Redefining Recovery Detox is only the first step. True recovery is slow and non-linear. Dr. Giles believes in meeting patients where they are, using medication to ease withdrawal and building trust. Many team members are in recovery themselves, creating supportive environments. When the pandemic hit, Dr. Giles led in telehealth for addiction care, reducing relapses and shortening the gap between treatment and reentry.  Emerging therapies, like GLP-1 agonists and TMS, offer hope, but long-term change requires behavior shifts. Anyone can struggle with addiction, and everyone deserves a path out. "We have to stop treating people like problems and start treating them like people," says Dr. Giles. In This Podcast You'll Learn… The three stages of addiction and how to identify them. Why modern society amplifies addictive behaviors. How Dr. Giles overcame his own addiction. Emerging therapies for addiction treatment. The importance of compassion in addiction recovery.   EPISODE RESOURCES: Website

280: Medical Errors: A Critical Issue - with Julie Siemers

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2025 52:52

Medical errors rank as the third leading cause of death in the United States, following heart disease and cancer. These preventable mistakes, including misdiagnoses, medication errors, and communication breakdowns, contribute to a significant number of fatalities annually. Understanding these risks and actively participating in one's healthcare is crucial and can be a matter of life and death. The Reality of Medical Errors Julie Siemers, a nurse with over forty years of healthcare experience, gained firsthand insight into medical errors when her parents were in an airplane accident and she had to advocate for their care from a distance. This personal experience, along with her nursing background, inspired her to pursue advanced degrees focusing on patient safety. Her research revealed that despite growing awareness, medical errors remain a persistent problem. Understanding and  Preventing Errors Hospital safety varies considerably, and it's important to know that hospitals receive safety grades based on patient outcomes and risk factors. Websites like hospitalsafetygrade.org allow individuals to check these ratings, which range from A to F and assess 22 safety categories, including preventable blood clots and post-surgical complications.  Early warning signs of medical distress often appear hours before a major event occurs. Physiological indicators of deterioration can be evident 6 to 24 hours before a crisis. Family members can play a critical role by observing behavioral or neurological changes that healthcare providers might miss.  For example, a stroke patient with a feeding tube should never have their bed laid flat due to the increased risk of aspiration pneumonia. Medical misdiagnoses are more common than many realize, with studies suggesting that 33% of emergency room diagnoses are either incorrect or missed.. It is essential for patients to always follow up on test results and seek second opinions, especially for significant diagnoses. While individual errors happen, many medical errors are due to systemic failures. The case of nurse RaDonda Vaught, who administered the wrong medication due to hospital system flaws, illustrates this. Investigations uncovered multiple hospital errors, including malfunctioning medication cabinets that bypassed safety measures. Alarmingly, communication breakdowns, whether between healthcare providers or between medical teams and patients, contribute to 70% of patient harm cases.  Informed patients tend to have better outcomes. The case of a man with undiagnosed sleep apnea who died from respiratory depression after being given opioids post-surgery highlights the importance of knowing one's medical history and potential drug interactions. Patients should question, research, and advocate for their well-being. Wrong-site surgeries, although seemingly unthinkable, occur about 20 times per week in the U.S.. Patients should actively confirm the correct procedure with their surgeons before entering the operating room. Artificial intelligence (AI) is being implemented in medical diagnostics, particularly in radiology, to improve diagnostic accuracy by identifying abnormalities.  However, AI is not infallible and can produce errors, making human oversight essential. Clear communication is a fundamental way to prevent medical errors. Family members should attend doctor visits, take notes, and ask clarifying questions. The “3 P's” approach can be helpful: Be Present during key discussions and hospital rounds. Be Polite, as healthcare interactions can be stressful for both parties. Be Persistent if concerns are not addressed, escalating to higher authorities if necessary. Discussing wishes with family and completing legal documents like power of attorney can ensure personal healthcare decisions are respected. The healthcare system faces challenges with a nursing shortage and declining competency levels, which can impact patient safety. Studies have shown a decrease in the percentage of new nurses deemed practice-ready. High patient loads and burnout contribute to nurses leaving the profession. Taking Control of Your Healthcare Like a ship captain navigating a journey, the doctor provides the map, but the patient ultimately steers the course. Building a network of informed individuals can empower patients to make the best choices for their health and longevity. The reality of medical errors as the third leading cause of death underscores that staying informed and advocating for oneself in the healthcare system is not just important—it's lifesaving. In this podcast, you will learn... Why medical errors are the third leading cause of death The importance of being proactive in your healthcare Strategies for effective communication with healthcare providers How hospital safety ratings can inform your choices Key warning signs to watch for in a patient's condition The role of systemic issues in contributing to medical errors EPISODE RESOURCES: Website Instagram  Facebook LinkedIn YouTube Tik Tok

Lee Holden, a renowned Qigong master and author, shares insights about energy, healing, and the transformative power of slowing down in a fast-paced world. Finding Qigong Lee's journey with Qigong began after a soccer injury during his sophomore year in college. After conventional treatments failed, he sought help from a martial arts teacher who used Chi for healing. After a few Qigong treatments, Lee was ready to play soccer again. This recovery sparked his passion for Eastern healing practices. Understanding Chi At the core of Qigong is the concept of energy, or Chi, which refers to life force. In Chinese medicine, when someone is sick, it's believed that their Chi is blocked. Eastern practices aim to address root causes, leading to "positive side effects" where treating one condition improves multiple aspects of wellbeing. The Benefits of Slowing Down Slowing down can enhance our energy, productivity, and quality of life. Qigong is described as a balanced practice that connects us to ourselves and the present moment. Slowing down helps with: Enhanced productivity Better digestion Fewer mistakes More meaningful moments Slowing down also slows the aging process because it reduces stress. Qigong tradition often counts breaths rather than years, with slower breathing correlating with longer life. Adding life to your years: By slowing down, meaningful moments and memories are created and life is truly experienced. Getting Started with Qigong: Try 7 minutes a day of Qigong. Even a brief practice can activate your Chi, stretch lines of tension, and incorporate flowing movements. In this podcast you will learn: The power of slowing down. How Qigong enhances energy. How slowing down leads to fewer mistakes How to breathe slower for longevity How to create more meaningful moments A simple way to get started with Qigong In a world that often values speed and constant productivity, deliberately slowing down can give you clear intention.   EPISODE RESOURCES:   Holden Qigong official Youtube Instagram

The Potency of Spagyric Tinctures Lost Empire Herbs honors herbal traditions using spagyric tincturing, an ancient method that involves burning plant material to extract minerals and reincorporating them into tinctures. This process creates more complete and potent remedies. Ancient herbalists understood that healing is about the whole plant and supporting the whole human, not just isolated chemicals. Reconnecting Through Herbalism Modern life disconnects us from nature, leading to various chronic diseases. Herbalism can rebuild that connection. It's not about rejecting modern medicine but remembering the natural solutions that have supported human health for millennia. Whether it's enhancing vitality with ant extract, calming the mind with blue vervain, or restoring balance with pine pollen, ancient herbal wisdom offers valuable solutions. True herbalism involves engaging with nature, experiencing the effects, and trusting its intelligence. In this podcast you'll learn: How nature served as the original teacher for ancient healing systems. The concept of "feelable" herbs and their tangible benefits. Spagyric tincturing, an alchemical method for potent herbal remedies. The importance of reconnecting with nature through herbalism in modern times.

The convergence of ketamine therapy and executive coaching is an innovative approach to personal and professional growth, drawing from neuroscience, psychology, and leadership development. Ketamine for Mental Flexibility and Adaptability Ketamine, traditionally used as an anesthetic, has gained recognition for its potential to enhance mental flexibility. By fostering neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to reorganize and form new neural connections—ketamine facilitates adaptability and learning.  Dr. Paulus emphasizes that in the 21st century, the greatest skill lies in learning, unlearning, and relearning. This aligns with modern leadership needs for quick pivots and creative problem-solving.  Executive coaching also aims to build resilience and maintain a growth mindset. Ketamine therapy can complement this by fostering openness and suggestibility. When used responsibly, ketamine can help executives access deeper self-awareness and overcome limiting beliefs. However, the heightened suggestibility requires careful guidance to ensure beneficial outcomes. Integrating Tradition and Modern Practices Psychedelic compounds like ketamine have roots in ancient practices for communal healing and spiritual growth. Dr. Paulus emphasizes the importance of carefully integrating these traditions into modern therapy, tailoring interventions to individual histories and needs. This approach is already in use at his clinic, which combines traditional and non-pharmacological methods such as neurofeedback. Ethical Considerations and Practical Applications The use of ketamine in executive coaching raises ethical questions. Robust frameworks are needed to guide its application. This includes assessing the intentions of those administering ketamine and ensuring a supportive environment. Transparency and collaboration between medical professionals and coaches are crucial for responsible use.  Ketamine sessions can help leaders overcome burnout, anxiety, and rigid thought patterns, promoting clarity. This can also enhance creativity by opening critical learning periods in the brain. The combination of coaching and therapy can deepen self-awareness and empathy, important for effective leadership. Individualized approaches, such as combining ketamine with journaling or mindfulness, enhance the integration of insights. Adam Parker's story begins in the bustling corporate environment of London. The high-stress lifestyle took its toll, manifesting in poor digestion, anxiety, and low testosterone. Symptoms like hair loss and muscle loss not only affected his physical health but also his confidence and emotional well-being. Conventional medical treatments—ranging from steroid creams to antidepressants—offered temporary relief but failed to address the root cause. The Shift to Holistic Health Dissatisfied with allopathic solutions, Adam explored functional and holistic approaches. He experimented with various supplements and biohacks but found limited improvement. The game-changer came unexpectedly: a liver cleanse that highlighted the profound impact of detoxification. Adam realized that true healing involved removing toxins, not just adding nutrients. Key Insights on Detoxification Detox as a Pillar of Health: Detoxification is one of several pillars, alongside nutrition, sleep, community, and spiritual connection. Modern life exposes us to unprecedented levels of toxins, making detoxification essential. Individualized Detox Pathways: Everyone's detoxification journey is unique. Factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and childhood environment influence how effectively one can eliminate toxins. Understanding these factors helps tailor the detox process. Mind-Body Connection: Adam emphasizes the mental aspect of detox. Our belief systems and mindset play crucial roles in overall health. Controlling external inputs — such as avoiding mainstream news — can help maintain positive mental energy. The Detoxification Process Toxin Storage: The body stores toxins in layers—blood, fat, tissue, and organs. When overwhelmed, it opts to store toxins rather than eliminate them. Herxheimer Reactions: Detoxing can temporarily cause flu-like symptoms as toxins release. Retracement reactions can also resurface old symptoms and emotions. Role of Binders: Substances like bentonite clay and zeolite help bind and safely remove toxins. Gut and Liver Health: The Foundations Colon Health: Importance: The colon is a primary detoxification pathway. Regular bowel movements are essential (at least once daily). Methods: Traditional colonics are effective but costly. Enzyme-based cleanses, like Zen Cleanse, efficiently remove mucoid plaque, reducing inflammation and improving nutrient absorption. Liver Health: Central Role: The liver performs over 500 functions and processes all toxins. Supporting liver health is crucial for overall detoxification. Approaches: Basic support includes herbs like milk thistle and dandelion root. Deeper cleanses address the liver's core issues, crucial in a world filled with heavy metals, EMFs, and chemical overloads. Practical Steps for Detox and Wellness Clean Your Environment: Assess personal care products, air quality, and EMF exposure. Gut-Healing Foods: Introduce bone broth, fermented foods, and other gut-friendly items. Balance and Flexibility: Build a strong foundation, but allow occasional indulgences. Adam Parker's Philosophy: Empowerment and Critical Thinking Adam's mission is to educate clients, empowering them to share knowledge with their families. He encourages skepticism—questioning mainstream narratives and even his advice. Intuition and personal research are key to making informed decisions about health. Final Thoughts: The Holistic Path to Health Detoxification is more than a physical cleanse; it's a comprehensive journey involving the mind, body, and emotions. With dedication and a systematic approach, it can transform well-being. True health recovery requires self-awareness, education, and an unwavering commitment to the process—values at the core of Adam Parker's philosophy.   EPISODE RESOURCES: Instagram

This experience led her to believe that hospitals, while crucial for acute care, often lack a holistic perspective. This realization inspired her to merge energy medicine with skincare. The Science of Energy Medicine Cathy's approach centers around three interconnected "nervous systems." These include: The physical nervous system, responsible for transmitting sensory signals. The liquid nervous system, encompassing hormones, neuropeptides, and biochemical responses. The bio-photon highway, a complex communication network using light energy within the body. This biophoton concept aligns with quantum physics, specifically the observer effect, which suggests that focused attention can trigger physical changes. By directing energy through specialized tools, individuals can stimulate their body's inherent healing mechanisms. Functional Skincare Functional skincare prioritizes regeneration over superficial solutions. Cathy emphasizes the following principles: Active Ingredients: The effectiveness of active ingredients relies not only on their percentage but also on their quality and origin. Transparency: Many skincare products conceal toxins under proprietary labels, especially in fragrances, potentially containing hundreds of chemicals that bypass FDA regulations. Natural Processes: Instead of introducing external substances like collagen, Cathy's methods train the skin to produce its own collagen and support natural muscle function. Skincare Protocols Tru Energy Skincare offers a comprehensive system infused with biophoton frequencies. Daniel Packard, a mechanical engineer, spent eight years researching and developing a system to help people overcome the "funky 5": anxiety, perfectionism, procrastination, people-pleasing, and self-doubt. His company, Full Liberation Technology, has helped thousands of people achieve lasting freedom from these challenges by addressing their root cause: fear. Beyond Symptom Management Packard criticizes the "improvement industrial complex," which he believes focuses too much on awareness and managing symptoms without addressing the underlying cause of mental health challenges. He argues that fear is the common root of the "funky 5," and traditional methods that address individual symptoms or encourage "facing your fears" offer only temporary relief. His approach emphasizes measurable results and sustainable solutions that target fear directly. The Body's Role in Fear Packard's approach is unique because it focuses on the body's role in fear. While traditional methods often center on thought-based therapies, Packard contends that fear originates in the body. Physical sensations associated with fear then influence the mind, creating anxious narratives. He believes that calming the body is more effective for achieving lasting relief from fear and anxiety. One of Packard's clients experienced significant improvement in anxiety and procrastination simply by focusing on bodily sensations. Recalibrating the Nervous System Packard attributes many mental health challenges to a malfunctioning nervous system. He explains that a healthy nervous system allows individuals to feel safe and resilient. When the nervous system is dysregulated, issues like perfectionism, procrastination, and people-pleasing arise. He compares these mental health challenges to physical injuries, highlighting the impact of a dysregulated nervous system on behavior and emotional health. Packard believes that modern society lacks understanding of how to maintain nervous system health, and daily habits can unknowingly damage it. He offers an alternative approach that emphasizes sustainable wellness by focusing on building a strong foundation for long-term health. The Damage of Diet Culture Hoye's method stems from his experience working with clients, particularly women, who have endured repeated cycles of dieting. This pattern often leads to “metabolic nightmares”—a slowdown of metabolism caused by muscle loss and erratic eating habits.  When the focus is solely on weight loss, muscle mass is frequently sacrificed. Without a strong muscular foundation, the body struggles to maintain a healthy metabolism, making subsequent weight loss attempts even harder Building a Foundation for Long-Term Health Hoye's two-phase approach prioritizes creating a sustainable foundation over quick weight loss. This "foundations" phase concentrates on establishing habits that bolster muscle and metabolic health: Exercise Consistency: Regular, moderate exercise, such as going to the gym 3-4 times per week, helps build and maintain muscle while boosting metabolism. Nutrition Essentials: Hoye encourages incorporating protein into every meal to support muscle retention. He stresses the importance of understanding individual needs and getting balanced nutrition, rather than following restrictive diets. Sleep Quality: Quality sleep is crucial for metabolic health and muscle recovery. Establishing a consistent sleep routine and good sleep hygiene practices is essential. Reshaping with Purpose and Preparation Once a solid foundation is established, the focus shifts to a "reshaping" phase. This phase involves refining and personalizing goals, emphasizing preparation and consistency for lasting results. This approach contrasts with the instant-gratification mentality of diet culture, promoting sustainable, evidence-based methods instead. Detoxifying From Diet Culture: Key Mindset Shifts Hoye encourages these mindset shifts to help clients detox from diet culture: Shift Focus from the Scale: Instead of chasing a specific number, aim for a body that feels and functions well. Recognize Muscle as the Foundation: Building muscle supports overall health, helps maintain metabolism, and allows the body to adapt to changes in diet and exercise without drastic impacts on weight or energy levels. Simplify Health: Prioritize balanced eating, regular exercise, and quality sleep over trendy, extreme regimens. Embrace Discomfort for Growth: Building new habits can be uncomfortable, but this discomfort fosters lasting change and resilience. Logical Tracking Over Emotional Responses: Focus on measurable progress in areas like gym performance, sleep, and general energy levels to observe real improvements without being swayed by daily fluctuations in mood or appearance. 271: DNA: Your Health Blueprint - with Elwin Robinson

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2024 65:44

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to effortlessly maintain a healthy weight while others struggle despite their best efforts? Or why do certain individuals experience anxiety and depression more intensely than others? The answer might lie within your DNA. The Impact of Genetics on Your Health Elwin Robinson's health journey is a testament to the powerful influence of genetics. While genetics can predispose us to specific health conditions, it doesn't mean we're destined to suffer. In his late twenties, Elwin experienced chronic fatigue, which he linked to both his genes and unhealthy lifestyle habits. His family history, marked by his father's chronic fatigue syndrome and his mother's passing from cancer, underscored the role genetics played in their health. Elwin embraced a healthier lifestyle, eliminating alcohol, smoking, and processed foods. He incorporated holistic practices like fasting, yoga, and detoxing into his routine. Despite these positive changes, he faced persistent health issues, including debilitating pain related to digestive problems. Genetic testing finally revealed his predisposition to conditions like sphincter of Oddi dysfunction and cholestasis. These conditions hindered his body's detoxification processes. Decoding Food Sensitivities Food allergies and intolerances can manifest in various ways, often with subtle, easily overlooked symptoms. Many individuals experience anxiety, depression, digestive discomfort, or even heart failure linked to undiagnosed food sensitivities. Elwin's experience exemplifies this. Even though genetic tests indicated no specific food allergies, Elwin's digestive issues worsened as he aged. Further genetic testing revealed that his food sensitivities were likely connected to bile toxicity and gut dysbiosis, not typical allergies. Genetic reports can pinpoint sensitivities to compounds like histamine, salicylates, and oxalates, often hidden triggers. These substances are found in healthy foods, including fruits, vegetables, and oils. The Genetic Roots of Mental Well-being Anxiety and depression are often perceived as purely mental health issues, but genetics can significantly influence our emotional experiences. For Elwin, chronic pain and unresolved health concerns fueled his anxiety and insomnia. Genetic testing revealed a genetic variant that slowed his body's breakdown of stress chemicals, shedding light on the biological underpinnings of his mental health challenges. This highlights the concept that some individuals may be genetically predisposed to anxiety and depression, making it more difficult for them to regulate their emotions. These individuals may benefit from personalized support, including specific nutrients and lifestyle modifications, to achieve mental balance. For instance, low levels of oxytocin (often called the "love hormone") can contribute to feelings of emotional emptiness and even trigger addictive behaviors like overeating. DNA's Influence on Weight Management If you've struggled with weight loss despite trying various diets and exercise plans, your genes may be playing a role. Historically, obesity rates were low, even when diets included sugar and saturated fats. This suggests that modern environmental factors, combined with individual genetic differences, contribute to the obesity crisis. Some individuals have a genetic predisposition to insulin resistance, making it harder to shed pounds. Others may experience hormonal imbalances that affect hunger, fat storage, and metabolism. Even variations in thyroid function, like suboptimal or undiagnosed hypothyroidism, can lead to unexplained weight gain. In this podcast, you will learn: The impact of genetics on  conditions like chronic fatigue How food sensitivities may be related to bile toxicity and gut health The influence of genetics on anxiety, depression, and emotional well-being How DNA can affect weight loss efforts and metabolic processes The importance of personalized health insights based on genetic testing EPISODE RESOURCES: Website Facebook Twitter YouTube  Podcast

Prioritize Gut Health for Hormonal Balance and Weight Management Gut health is vital for hormone regulation and metabolism. During midlife, the balance of gut bacteria may shift, affecting weight and mood. Focusing on gut health supports overall well-being during this phase. Probiotics and Prebiotics: Incorporate foods like yogurt, kefir, and garlic to nourish the gut microbiome. Fiber-Rich Diet: Eat fiber-rich foods such as vegetables, fruits, and legumes to support digestion and eliminate excess estrogen. Stay Hydrated: Drinking enough water aids digestion and metabolism. 2. Support Liver Function for Better Hormonal and Weight Regulation The liver plays a crucial role in detoxifying the body and metabolizing hormones. Liver-Supporting Supplements: Milk thistle and turmeric are natural supplements that promote liver health. 3. Natural Approaches to Hormonal Balance Many women seek to maintain hormone balance without hormone replacement therapy. Lifestyle changes and dietary improvements can support natural hormonal equilibrium. Incorporate Healthy Fats: Omega-3s from salmon or walnuts help hormone production. Manage Stress: Yoga, meditation, and nature walks reduce cortisol, supporting hormone balance. Prioritize Sleep: Consistent sleep helps regulate hormones related to appetite, mood, and metabolism. 4. Exercise and Movement for Midlife Health Staying physically active is essential for sustaining muscle mass and metabolism. A combination of strength training and aerobic exercise can improve both physical and mental health during midlife. Strength Training: Preserve muscle mass through resistance exercises like weightlifting. Consistency Over Intensity: Walking or swimming regularly helps maintain health without requiring extreme effort. 5. Jessie Hehmeyer's journey into functional medicine began with her personal struggles with weight and digestion. Searching for solutions beyond conventional methods, she discovered the importance of mastering balance instead of relying on extreme behaviors or quick fixes. Jessie emphasizes the importance of defining clear, personal health goals, such as more energy or improved digestion, rather than focusing on vague desires like weight loss. This clarity sets the foundation for lasting change. The "All or Nothing" Trap Jessie identifies a common obstacle: the "all or nothing" approach, where individuals oscillate between extreme diets and indulgence, punishing themselves for failures. She views this as self-aggression, which leads to burnout rather than balance. Shifting toward moderation and self-love, she argues, is key to sustainable health. True health, according to Jessie, stems from self-love, not self-punishment. Instead of resorting to extreme diets or harsh self-talk, she advocates for a balanced, sustainable approach that begins with breaking unhealthy cycles and setting realistic goals. Functional Medicine: Personalized and Holistic In her practice, Jessie uses lab testing to uncover issues like inflammation and insulin sensitivity, addressing root causes rather than just symptoms. Her personalized interventions offer a holistic view of the body's systems, going beyond traditional approaches. Weight Mastery vs. Weight Loss Jessie differentiates between short-term weight loss and long-term "weight mastery," which involves setting realistic goals and building lasting habits. It's about creating and maintaining desired health outcomes over time. Jessie promotes small, manageable changes, such as healthier food choices or strength training, which she calls "metabolic money." She also highlights the limits of willpower, encouraging clients to cultivate mindfulness and create a personalized "blueprint" for long-term health. Jessie's work focuses on helping people find balance—rejecting the "all or nothing" mindset and embracing sustainable health rooted in self-love, leading to lasting change and alignment with long-term wellness goals. In this podcast, you will learn about: Jessie Hehmeyer's personal journey with weight and digestion issues that led her to functional medicine. Dr. Laura Capina, a seasoned acupuncturist and health enthusiast, has eagerly anticipated the opportunity to share her insights on a podcast for three years. Growing up in Latvia, she was immersed in a culture that embraced natural remedies for healing.  This upbringing laid the foundation for her lifelong interest in health and wellness. Upon moving to the United States, she observed alarming rates of obesity and allergies, which further ignited her curiosity about the stark health differences between the two countries. A transformative trip to India played a pivotal role in Dr. Capina's journey. During this trip, she immersed herself in yoga, Asian philosophy, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Chinese medicine. These experiences profoundly influenced her approach to health and healing. For nearly two decades, she has practiced acupuncture, incorporating cupping, electroacupuncture, and herbal medicine into her treatments. The Importance of Essential Nutrients Faced with an overwhelming number of herbs and remedies, Dr. Capina focused on identifying the most powerful superfoods and essential substances that promote optimal health. Guided by her mentors, she learned to prioritize foundational nutrients that are crucial for bodily functions. She advocates for nourishing the body with essential nutrients such as healthy fats, minerals, iodine, and digestive enzymes. Dr. Capina is a staunch opponent of synthetic vitamins and enriched foods, citing their potential harm. She criticizes products with synthetic additives, even if they appear to be organic and healthy. Instead, she emphasizes the importance of obtaining nutrients from natural sources, particularly Omega-3 fatty acids, which are vital for brain, eye, and cell membrane health.  Omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, play a critical role in maintaining cellular health and facilitating communication within the body. Dr. Capina notes the low conversion rate of plant-sourced Omega-3 (ALA) to DHA and EPA, underscoring the need to obtain these nutrients directly from fish or algae. She highlights the historical impact of Omega-3 consumption on human brain development and draws an interesting parallel between the human nervous system and that of dolphins. Innovative Health Solutions Sea salt and algae are highlighted as rich sources of beneficial substances, including EPA, DHA, minerals, and iodine. Algae, in particular, is significant as it is considered the seed of life on the planet, forming the basis of the food chain. The purity and extraction methods of algae oil are crucial, and Dr. Capina ensures that high-quality algae oil from Canada is used in her products. Vitamin E is another essential nutrient that Dr. Capina champions. It is the only antioxidant that protects fats from oxidation, making it crucial for anti-aging and protecting against free radicals.  She warns against synthetic vitamin E, recommending natural forms that include eight different types, with delta tocotrienol being the most powerful. The discovery of tocotrienols from the annatto plant by Dr. Tan revolutionized the understanding of vitamin E's benefits. Tocotrienols, particularly the delta and gamma forms, offer superior protection to cell membranes compared to tocopherols. Dr. Capina's innovative product combines algae oil with tocotrienols, providing extensive health benefits such as lowering cholesterol, improving cardiovascular health, and reducing inflammation. The formulation includes sprouted organic almond butter and MCT oil, enhancing absorption and effectiveness. Proper absorption of these oils is facilitated by the product's micelle formulation, which makes the oils water-soluble. While the product is safe for most individuals, Dr. Capina advises those on blood thinners or with severely compromised liver and gallbladder function to consult a doctor. Overall, her product offers foundational nutritional benefits, improving health and aiding in the detoxification and nourishment of the body. In this podcast, you will learn about: The critical role of Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA, in maintaining brain, eye, and cell membrane health for overall wellness. Differences between synthetic and natural vitamins, highlighting potential health impacts and the benefits of obtaining nutrients from natural sources. The extensive health benefits of algae oil and tocotrienols, including improved cardiovascular health, lowered cholesterol, and reduced inflammation. Yogi Aaron's journey in the yoga world began in the mid-1990s, a time when the practice was gaining traction globally. Practicing alongside notable individuals like Wade Morrison and witnessing the rise of brands such as Lululemon, Yogi Aaron has seen the yoga community evolve over the years. He takes pride in Lululemon's international success, particularly given its Canadian roots. Born into a "hippy dippy" family, Aaron's early years were steeped in alternative spiritual practices, including time spent at a spiritual healing center in Vancouver. This background clashed with his Christian evangelical upbringing, creating an internal conflict that would later shape his approach to yoga and spirituality. Challenges and Transformations As Aaron aged, he noticed his body tightening and saw yoga as a solution for maintaining mobility. Initially, his practice focused on physical stretching and hardcore power yoga. However, a pivotal moment came when Wade Morrison commented that Aaron lacked true practice. This critique pushed Aaron to seek a deeper understanding and more profound guidance in yoga. Aaron's yoga practice not only improved his physical flexibility but also enhanced his mental focus, helping him manage his attention deficit disorder. His formative years at a boys' boarding school in Alberta, filled with outdoor activities, had taught him the importance of managing his energy effectively. Despite early improvements, Aaron faced worsening back problems due to incorrect adjustments and stretching practices in yoga. These injuries led him to delve deeper into yoga beyond physical postures, exploring its spiritual dimensions.  He studied with various influential yoga teachers, including Rod Stryker, Rajmani Tigunait, and Alan Finger, embracing the deeper, spiritual aspects of yoga. This journey took him beyond physical poses to a greater understanding of energy management and enlightenment. Innovations in Yoga Practice Aaron's commitment to yoga, despite significant injuries, led him to question traditional practices and seek new understanding. He discovered muscle activation techniques, which provided profound insights into biomechanics and muscle function. This newfound knowledge transformed his approach to yoga, shifting the focus from traditional stretching and alignment practices to proper body mechanics and muscle activation. Recognizing the need to challenge misconceptions in the yoga world, Aaron began to understand his body's pain and stiffness, particularly in his hamstrings. This exploration led him to integrate muscle activation techniques into yoga, aiming to replace traditional stretching with muscle activation.  Aaron discovered that muscle tightness, such as in the hamstrings, is a protective mechanism due to other muscles not contracting properly. True mobility and stability, he realized, come from muscles contracting and shortening correctly, not lengthening. To bring this biomechanical awareness into yoga, Aaron developed the A.Y.A.M.A. (Applied Yoga Anatomy and Muscle Activation) method. His teachings emphasize the importance of proper body mechanics and muscle activation for true mobility and stability. Aaron's Blue Osa Yoga Retreat & Spa serves as a sanctuary for yoga teachers, individual retreat-goers, and hosts his yoga teacher training sessions. To distance his yoga retreat from his previous naked men's yoga group, he rebranded himself from Aaron Star to Yogi Aaron. He leverages online platforms like YouTube and the Yogi Club to provide content and courses on becoming pain-free. Commitment to a Pain-Free Life A key message in Aaron's teachings is the importance of finding a real teacher who challenges and inspires growth. Despite facing resistance and skepticism from the yoga community due to his unconventional views on stretching, Aaron remains steadfast in his mission. His book "Stop Stretching" and his teachings aim to help people live pain-free lives. For those interested in exploring Yogi Aaron's innovative approach to yoga and mobility, his website, yogiaaron.com, serves as a comprehensive hub. Here, visitors can access his book, podcast, and free resources, including a "7 Days to Becoming Pain-Free" series. What is Fascia?   Fascia is a dense network of connective tissue that envelops everything in the body—from muscles and organs to bones and nerves. Blackwell describes fascia as a "three-dimensional plastic wrap suit" that holds everything in place. It also plays a vital role in proprioception, our body's awareness of its position in space. When fascia becomes tight or restricted, it can lead to pain and dysfunction throughout the body. This is because tight fascia can exert a pull on muscles and joints, limiting their range of motion. Additionally, restricted fascia can impede blood flow and lymphatic drainage, potentially leading to further complications. The Benefits of Fascia Release Fascia release, a type of manual therapy, involves applying gentle pressure and movement to the fascial tissue. Blackwell emphasizes the importance of active participation during fascia release sessions. By working with a practitioner, individuals can experience various benefits, including: Improved mobility and range of motion Reduced pain Enhanced posture Improved circulation Emotional release How to Find a Fascia Release Practitioner   Blackwell recommends seeking a fascia release practitioner who is well-trained in the anatomy and physiology of fascia. 261: Exploring Neurofeedback Potential - Andrew Hill

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2024 76:06

In the expansive realm of mental health and cognitive enhancement, neurofeedback emerges as a particularly promising approach to brain training. It offers exciting possibilities for optimizing brain function and mental well-being.  But what is neurofeedback, and how does it work? Join us on a journey through the brain's intricate pathways, guided by insights from Andrew Hill, a pioneer in the field. Introduction to Neurofeedback Neurofeedback's origins trace back to the early 20th century with the discovery of the EEG (Electroencephalogram), which laid the groundwork for understanding brain waves. By the mid-1960s, the foundations of modern neurofeedback were established. This technique trains the brain's electrical activity through operant conditioning, similar to how a baby learns through exploration and feedback. To fully understand neurofeedback, one must first grasp the basics of EEG and the brain's complex structure. EEG measures the brain's electrical activity, providing insights into its function. The cortex, with its six layers of tissue, serves as the command center for processing information. Different brainwave frequencies, from Delta to Beta, reflect various states and functions of the brain, revealing its inner workings. Exploring Brainwave Frequencies Each brainwave frequency has its significance. Delta waves, linked to deep sleep, facilitate memory consolidation. Theta waves promote insight and creativity, although excessive Theta can cause distractibility. Beta waves are associated with focused attention but can become intrusive in excess, leading to OCD-like behaviors. Neurofeedback sessions are personalized experiences, tailored to individual goals and brainwave patterns. In today's bustling world, we're surrounded by a silent assailant that often goes unnoticed: toxins and heavy metals. As Wendy Myers aptly puts it, these insidious elements lurk in our environment, stealthily infiltrating our bodies through the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink.  But what exactly do these toxins and heavy metals do to our bodies, and how can we combat their harmful effects? The Threat of Heavy Metals Research reveals a startling truth: a significant portion of all-cause mortality, as high as 19%, can be attributed to lead alone. Lead is just the tip of the toxic iceberg. Wendy Myers emphasizes that heavy metals like mercury, arsenic, thallium, and cesium wreak havoc on our health, contributing to a myriad of symptoms ranging from fatigue and hormone imbalances to cognitive decline and chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. But where do these toxins come from, and how do they insinuate themselves into our bodies?  The sources are diverse and pervasive, from the air we breathe laden with industrial pollutants to the water contaminated with chemicals and heavy metals like lead leached from aging pipes. Even seemingly innocuous products like beauty care items and non-organic foods can harbor toxins, further exacerbating the issue. The consequences of toxic exposure are dire and multifaceted. Heavy metals like lead not only impair mitochondrial function, hindering energy production, but also inflict damage on the brain, leading to memory issues and learning disabilities. Moreover, toxins disrupt hormonal balance, compromise immune function, and accelerate aging processes, leading to a myriad health ailments. Detox for health The urgency to address this pervasive threat cannot be overstated. Fortunately, there are steps we can take to mitigate the impact of toxins and heavy metals on our health. Wendy Myers advocates for a multi-faceted approach to detoxification, encompassing dietary changes, supplementation, and lifestyle modifications. One of the key strategies in detoxification is mineral supplementation, particularly focusing on crucial minerals like magnesium, zinc, selenium, and potassium. These minerals not only support essential bodily functions but also aid in displacing heavy metals from our tissues, facilitating their elimination. In addition to mineral supplementation, incorporating binders like activated charcoal, modified citrus pectin, or zeolite can help absorb and eliminate toxins from the body. These binders act as sponges, effectively trapping toxins and facilitating their excretion. Furthermore, lifestyle practices such as regular sauna use can aid in detoxification by promoting sweating, increasing circulation, and expelling toxins through the skin. Bioenergetic therapies offer another avenue for detoxification, energizing the body and supporting its natural detox processes. While detoxification protocols are crucial for restoring health, it's essential to exercise caution, particularly for vulnerable populations such as pregnant or breastfeeding women. In such cases, gentle detox strategies such as binder supplementation may be appropriate to prevent toxin transfer to the baby. In conclusion, the threat posed by toxins and heavy metals to our health is real and pervasive. By adopting a proactive approach to detoxification and minimizing exposure to harmful substances, we can safeguard our health and vitality for years to come. As Wendy Myers emphasizes, the time to act is now— our well-being depends on it. In this podcast, you will learn about: The Threat of Heavy Metals: Understanding their pervasive presence in our environment. Play Episode Listen Later Feb 22, 2024 79:35

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the therapeutic potential of psychedelics for personal development and mental health.  Among the various approaches to psychedelic use, microdosing has emerged as a particularly intriguing practice.  What is Microdosing? Microdosing involves taking small, sub-perceptual doses of psychedelics such as LSD or psilocybin mushrooms on a periodic basis.  Unlike traditional psychedelic experiences where individuals take larger doses to induce profound alterations in consciousness, microdosing aims to harness the subtle effects of these substances without causing noticeable changes in perception. Typically, microdoses are about one-tenth to one-fifth of a recreational dose, and they are often taken every few days over a period of several weeks.  The goal is not to experience a psychedelic trip but rather to enhance mood, creativity, focus, and overall wellbeing in a subtle and sustainable manner. The Benefits of Microdosing There are several benefits of microdosing. The most common are: Enhanced Mood and Wellbeing: Many users report improvements in mood, reduced anxiety, and increased feelings of well-being while microdosing.  These subtle shifts in emotional state can contribute to a greater sense of overall happiness and contentment in daily life. Increased Creativity and Productivity: Microdosing has been associated with heightened creativity, improved problem-solving abilities, and increased productivity. Some users find that they are better able to focus on tasks, think outside the box, and generate new ideas while microdosing. Cognitive Enhancement: Research suggests that microdosing may have cognitive benefits, such as enhanced learning, memory, and cognitive flexibility. This may be due in part to the effects of psychedelics on neuroplasticity and brain function. Emotional Healing and Self-Discovery: Microdosing can facilitate emotional healing and self-discovery by promoting introspection, insight, and personal growth. Many users report gaining new perspectives on their lives, relationships, and challenges while microdosing. Stress Reduction and Resilience: Microdosing may help individuals better cope with stress and adversity by promoting relaxation, emotional resilience, and a sense of inner peace. This can be particularly beneficial for those dealing with chronic stress, anxiety, or depression. Integrating Microdosing into Daily Life When considering microdosing, it's essential to approach it with intention, mindfulness, and responsibility. Here are some tips for integrating microdosing into your daily life: Start Low and Go Slow: Begin with a low dose and gradually increase as needed, paying close attention to how you respond to each microdose. Set Intentions: Before microdosing, take a moment to set clear intentions for what you hope to achieve or experience. This can help guide your microdosing practice and enhance its effectiveness. Create a Supportive Environment: Surround yourself with a supportive environment conducive to personal growth and self-exploration. This may include engaging in activities that nourish your mind, body, and spirit, such as meditation, yoga, or spending time in nature. Practice Mindfulness: Cultivate mindfulness and self-awareness during your microdosing journey, paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment. Seek Professional Guidance: If you're new to microdosing or have specific mental health concerns, consider seeking guidance from a qualified healthcare professional or psychedelic integration therapist who can provide personalized support and guidance. The Legal Landscape and Future Outlook The legal status of psychedelics varies widely around the world, with some countries embracing research and therapeutic use while others maintain strict prohibition.  However, there has been a growing movement to decriminalize or legalize psychedelics for therapeutic purposes, driven by emerging research and shifting public attitudes. In this podcast, you will explore: Microdosing, which involves taking small, sub-perceptual doses of psychedelics like LSD or psilocybin mushrooms periodically. The benefits of microdosing, including enhanced mood, increased creativity, improved cognitive function, emotional healing, and stress reduction. How to approach microdosing with intention, mindfulness, and responsibility by setting clear intentions and creating a supportive environment. The importance of seeking guidance from qualified healthcare professionals or psychedelic integration therapists, especially if you're new to microdosing or dealing with specific mental health concerns. Staying informed about the legal landscape surrounding psychedelics to prioritize safety, legality, and informed decision-making when considering microdosing. And much more. In the realm of women's health, the significance of environmental factors affecting fertility and overall well-being has come to the forefront. Susana Puelles, a seasoned healthcare provider with over 25 years of experience, explores holistic approaches to address women's challenges, particularly regarding glyphosate exposure, aging, and infertility. Glyphosate, a key component in many herbicides, has infiltrated our environment, permeating our food and water sources. Susana Puelles emphasizes the multigenerational impact of this pervasive chemical, known for its herbicidal properties, potentially disrupting hormonal balance and leading to issues such as fibroids, cysts, endometriosis, and fertility challenges. The Western Approach and Birth Control Susana critiques the conventional Western medical model's response to women's health issues, involving prescribing birth control and hormone replacement therapies. This approach often provides temporary relief but fails to address the root causes, underscoring the need for a paradigm shift in women's healthcare. She elucidates the misconception around regular periods induced by birth control, emphasizing that what many perceive as a menstrual cycle is, in fact, breakthrough bleeding caused by hormonal withdrawal. Susana explains the broader impact of birth control, depicting it not only as a synthetic hormone but also as a steroid with potential long-term consequences. The Crucial Role of Functional Medicine and Holistic Approaches Functional medicine emerges as a beacon of hope in Susana's narrative. She underscores the significance of testing for glyphosate levels, metals, and other toxins, shedding light on the unseen disruptions in the body's detox pathways. Unlike its Western counterpart, functional medicine aims to uncover the factors clogging the system, paving the way for a more comprehensive healing approach. Exposures and Detoxification Susana simplifies the complex landscape of chemical exposures, focusing on three primary culprits: fluoride, aluminum, and glyphosate. She encourages individuals to regain control over their environments by eliminating these toxins from everyday products. Emphasizing the impact of these exposures on the gut, she stresses the need to prioritize gut health as a precursor to effective detoxification. Healing the Gut and Yoni Sync Healing the gut takes precedence in Susana's approach, which she likens to the epicenter of hormone production and overall well-being. By identifying and rectifying exposure issues, healing the gut becomes a foundational step in the journey toward hormonal balance and fertility. Yoni Sync, Susana's holistic herb company, embodies her commitment to merging traditional herbal wisdom with modern health needs. Developed through years of experience, Yoni Sync offers solutions for hormone imbalances, fibroids, and overall women's health. Susana stresses the importance of time in the healing process. While some individuals witness transformative changes in as little as three to four months, the average timeline hovers around six months to a year. She urges individuals to grant themselves the grace of time, challenging societal impatience that often accompanies fertility struggles. Beyond Quick Fixes and High-Risk Pregnancies Susana provides a nuanced perspective on In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), acknowledging its role as a valid option for many couples. However, she cautions against perceiving it as a quick fix, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach that extends beyond the immediacy of fertility treatments. The integration of natural methods, such as acupuncture and herbal support, can enhance the effectiveness of IVF while addressing underlying issues. As IVF becomes more prevalent, so do high-risk pregnancies. Susana sheds light on potential complications arising from assisted reproductive technologies, including pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, and cholestasis. Integrative support from healthcare professionals, including acupuncturists and herbalists, can play a crucial role in mitigating these risks. The Continuation of Care in the Postpartum Phase The journey doesn't conclude with childbirth. Susana emphasizes the importance of postpartum care, especially for women who have undergone high-risk pregnancies or fertility treatments. A holistic team, including acupuncturists, can provide ongoing support, addressing hormonal imbalances and aiding in the recovery process. In this podcast, you'll discover:  Glyphosate's hidden impact on women's health and fertility. A critical look at conventional Western healthcare approaches. The rise of holistic functional medicine. In our fast-paced world, stress has become a constant companion due to work, family, and daily demands. However, there's a potent tool to combat stress and boost well-being: breathing exercises. These exercises not only manage stress but also enhance lung capacity. Discover how incorporating proper breathing techniques can lead to a healthier, calmer, and focused life. Mark A Carbone, a successful entrepreneur with a medical background, found breathing science through unique circumstances. With family ties to respiratory muscle training, he recognized its potential for medical patients and peak performers. Breathing, often overlooked, emerged as a vital factor for health and athletic success. Carbone explored how breathing patterns affect stress, anxiety, and achievements. He identified age-related lung capacity decline, leading to lower oxygen intake and health risks. This discovery fueled his mission to promote proper breathing techniques. Breathing's Profound Health Impact Although breathing seems automatic, its method profoundly affects health. After 30, lung capacity drops, and shallow breathing habits develop. Reduced lung capacity results in low oxygen intake, causing hypoxia and inflammation, a major health contributor. Crucially, oxygen curbs inflammation, making proper breathing essential. Carbone's team devised strategies to boost lung capacity and manage inflammation through breathing techniques. Modern life is rife with stress, harming health. Specific breathing exercises counteract stress's effects. Activating the vagus nerve with a deep sigh shifts the body from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest mode. The "2-4-6-2 method" blends controlled breathing and visualization, reducing stress and improving focus. Elevating Athletic Performance Through Breathing Athletes seek performance optimization, and breathing plays a role. The diaphragm fatigues before other muscles, affecting performance. Respiratory muscle training enhances the diaphragm and surrounding muscles, boosting endurance and stamina. Breathing exercises also enhance focus and mental states during competition. Peripheral vision, positive thoughts, and controlled breathing can sharpen an athlete's mental state. Longevity and Health Linked to Breathing Breathing exercises boost well-being and longevity. Resetting dysfunctional breathing patterns impacts the autonomic nervous system, aiding sleep, anxiety, and energy levels. Incorporating proper breathing techniques into daily life manages stress and promotes health. Whether an athlete or an individual seeking well-being, breathing science offers a potent solution. In this podcast you'll discover: Breathing exercises to reduce stress and enhance well-being. Proper techniques that boost lung capacity, aid stress and respiratory health.       Over the last few years, the spike protein has become a hot topic of discussion due to its association with COVID-19 and the various strains of the virus. This glycoprotein is responsible for the virus's ability to infect human cells, leading to a chain reaction of events in the body. In this podcast, we will delve into the spike protein, its interaction with human cells, and the potential effects it may have on our health, as discussed by Sara Banta, a health expert. The Spike Protein and Human Cell Interaction The spike protein of COVID-19 is composed of two subunits, S1 and S2. The S1 subunit contains the receptor binding domain, which attaches to the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor found on the surface of human cells. Once attached, the virus starts sending messages into the cell, disrupting its normal function. Effects on Health The spike protein's interaction with human cells can lead to a range of health issues and symptoms. Sara Banta highlights some unexplained health conditions that have emerged, such as weight gain and the recurrence of previously in-remission conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. Insulin Resistance and Toxicity Insulin resistance and toxicity are two major factors that accelerate the aging process and are linked to various metabolic diseases. The spike protein appears to impact insulin regulation, potentially leading to exaggerated insulin responses to certain foods, causing unexplained weight gain and other health complications. Impact on Fertility and Hormonal Imbalance The spike protein's interference with the ACE2 receptor can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to fertility issues, hormonal imbalances, and oxidative stress. Fertility rates have also shown a decline, with many individuals reporting water retention and weight gain, possibly linked to the spike protein's effects on the endocrine system. The Role of Iodine in Combating the Spike Protein Iodine is a crucial element that plays multiple roles in the body, including supporting thyroid function, detoxifying the body, and regulating estrogen production. Additionally, iodine appears to induce apoptosis, the body's natural process of eliminating weak and diseased cells. Thus, iodine supplementation may aid in reversing damage caused by the spike protein and detoxifying the body from radiation and heavy metals. Other Supplements to Support Health Various supplements can help combat the spike protein's impact and support overall health. Some of these include calcium d-glucarate to aid liver detoxification, magnesium for relaxation and sleep, and serrapeptase, a proteolytic enzyme that can break down spike protein components. Copper and the Importance of Liver Health Copper depletion caused by the spike protein and processed food diets can lead to an increase in uric acid and fatty liver disease.
