We’ll hear from author, speaker and Bible teacher Angie Smith about how to trust God when we don't understand what He's doing. And finally, we'll end with a few journal questions about how God's word encourages us through difficulty. When Things Don’t Go Your Way, Remember This Are you feeling lost? When we’re in the middle of hard things, we quickly lose perspective and give up hope. In this video, I’ll share an important truth that will help you find the courage to keep going. Do THIS When Life Doesn’t Make Sense with Angie Smith When you’re going through something hard, it’s easy to question, God, where are you? I sat down with my good friend Angie Smith and talked about how to trust God even when we don’t understand the story He’s writing. How Your Story Fits Into God’s Story “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 (NIV) From beginning to end, the Bible is full of hope. When we open the Scriptures, we find encouragement for our story by reading about the greater story. Here are a few journal questions to help unpack this idea: Have you ever thought of the Bible as one big story? What is the point of the story of Scripture? What part of God’s story do you want to know more about?

A lot can go on internally. We hear it in our noggin, and we feel it in our body. Perhaps it shows up as that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. Or perhaps it’s anxiety that you feel in your chest. We beat ourselves up, we make it mean something about us and how we’re flawed. We can make all sorts of rubbish up in our heads that it makes it harder to take action again the next time. It took a lot of mental energy to be able to do it in the first place, so your brain goes...hang on…it took all that energy AND it made you feel bad, so no way jose! Why would we do that again?! It wants to protect you from pain at the end of the day. And you can easily find yourself in a pattern or it being hard to take action. But here’s the thing. You have a LIFETIME of those experiences at play. We have good old negativity bias too working for us which means we hold on to those negative experiences and perhaps ignore the times where it DIDN’T happen and went how you wanted it to. If we have a belief that things have to go right the first time, why would we ever try again if it doesn’t? This could be our first live, a training in someone’s group, a speaking gig, a social post that tanked, anything. This is often at the heart of feeling like your business failed early on, or like something didn’t work before actually giving it a chance to. Or tweaking and experimenting to see what will work. We need to reframe how we think about these things. So much of running your own business is about experimenting. You don’t learn anything otherwise. We have to be open to things not working. Importantly, we also need to remember that most people don’t talk about the things that go wrong. You don’t see people talking so much about the launches that didn’t go well. The posts that tanked. When they fell over in a room full of strangers at an event. It’s less about these things happening, which they do. But more about what we make them mean. What we make them mean about ourselves. The reason I want to talk about this today is because things haven’t gone according to plan for me with something and I'm totally fine with it. And it’s certainly not the end of the road. One of my goals this year was I really wanted to get the Positive Pants Planner out by Christmas. It’s not going to happen. Old Fran would have had a lot to say about it. Old Fran would have beaten herself up around all the many ways she’d ‘failed’ and was ‘useless’. This Fran is fine. Yes it would have been amazing BUT, I knew I didn’t know what I was doing when I started creating it so the time frame was a hard one, a little bit finger in the air. AND covid hit. I wanted it to be out within a few months and there have been areas where I‘ve really dragged my feet. I have to take responsibility for that. I’ve procrastinated over the 2 final pieces of the puzzle I need to create because we’ve had a battle trying to get printers and cloth merchants to come back to us. We’ve had a battle trying to get realistic quotes. It’s not a problem I have two final pieces of copy to do because we couldn’t be further along than we are right now, BUT it was interesting for me to notice it. As soon as we get a printer quote i’m happy with and they give me a deadline I know i’ll be on it. BUT, it’s all part of the journey and i’m embracing the lessons. I’m watching myself and observing my ego with curiosity. I’ve laughed at myself more than once through the process. It IS coming. So me being aware that I tend to put a lot of self imposed pressure on myself has been important for me to notice. This is a year like nothing we’ve ever experienced. We couldn’t predict any of it. That’s ok. There have been a few existential crises along the way ha! But it’s about embracing the messy. I think a part of me knew i’d drag my feet a bit and made the decision early on that it would be undated. I want people to be able to start the habit of journaling at any point in the year, not just january so that was the main reason BUT, there was probably a tiny ego part of me involved in the benefits of that decision for me. For example, I will never have to ‘run out’ of stock or discount past January. With a luxury product that was important too. But doing it this way also allows for more ease and flow. That’s something we take away when we don’t allow ourselves the opportunity to get things ‘wrong’ or for them to not work out how we planned. We put too much attachment on the outcome. I remember when I had my jewellery business, I loved the fact that something not going to plan could turn out even better. It was something that allowed me to be creative. It made me more open. The trouble came when I started having to take commissions because it was our only source of income. I couldn’t afford to be choosy or say no to a potential customer. I absolutely hated it. That ‘need’ to be perfect made me fall out of love with my business. The lack of creativity. The seriousness of it took away the flow. If I made a mistake it would have been hugely costly, in terms of my time and materials. I always remember a commission that was about £500 cost. It was a stack ring and I had to work in 24ct gold. I could NOT afford to make a mistake. A huge amount of jewellers don’t work in gold these days. They work in sterling silver and plate thickly in gold, it’s called Gold Vermeil. I digress. It took away all the joy. All the creativity. The flow I felt. You don’t need to do this to your business. It’s one of the many reasons I chose to keep my job alongside my business too. I never wanted to be in a position of ‘need’. Needing something to go a certain way or make a certain amount of money. It’s not what I was crating for. I wanted to run things a certain way. With more ease, flow, room to experiment, room to try things, room to say no to things that didn’t feel good. It takes a while to find your feet but it’s a very different energy allowing room for mistakes. The ‘lack’ mentality isn’t there. Things not going exactly how you planned can be a beautiful thing that often leads you to a much better place than you would have found. Allowing yourself the joy of experimentation without so much pressure is a beautiful thing. My planner not being ready when I wanted it to be is not the end of the world. Yes I could have made tonnes of Christmas sales but that’s ok. The world hasn’t ended. I’m not ‘wrong’. It doesn’t ‘mean’ anything about me. I haven’t failed. I don’t need to beat myself up like I would have in the past. It’s about accepting where you are. Where I am is absolutely fine. It’s not a disaster. You guys will just have to wait a little longer. You can sign up to the waitlist at https://bit.ly/pppimwaiting So if you’re holding back on something because it may not work how you want it to. Or somethings already not gone how you wanted to and you’re beating yourself up and don’t want to try again, I hope this has given a little reframe for you. Ask yourself, what’s the worst case scenario here? What am I making it mean and is that the truth? When you can be open to things not going 100% according to plan you open yourself up to a lot more freedom. You have more ease and flow because you’re ok with it. Knowing it will work out as it’s supposed to. Whatever that may look like. So do the live, launch the course, programme, event, product. It’s going to work out how it’s supposed to. You’ll either get everything you wanted. Or a lesson you needed, which you can take, tweak and try again! Fx

The Case: Katherine is 37years old and 20 weeks pregnant Since early in her pregnancy, she’s had stiff joints and been exhausted and extremely nauseous. Prenatal vitamins made her morning sickness worse and time wasn’t making anything better. Katherine was having trouble keeping food down and was worried about getting sufficient nutrients to the fetus. The Investigation During the first trimester of pregnancy, it’s common to experience nausea and fatigue. For most women, the body finds it’s new equilibrium by the second trimester. When Katherine came to me with continued issues, I knew we had to dig a bit deeper into her diet and look at what she’d done to prepare her body for pregnancy. Kristin Mallon is a Registered Nurse (Certified in Inpatient Obstetric) and a midwife. She’s a pregnancy expert, published author and co-founder of Vibrant Beginning Pregnaceuticals. She’s delivered thousands of healthy babies. Her focus is on helping women prepare their bodies optimally before, during and after pregnancy through high-quality nutrients. The First Trimester Kristin explains that the body experiences an influx of hormones (specifically estrogen, progesterone, and human chorionic gonadotropin or hGC) when fertilization occurs. This is why so many women experience symptoms like morning sickness, nausea, and fatigue in the first few months of pregnancy - their bodies are reacting to the change in hormones. Some women may also experience breast tenderness, low-grade headaches, gastro-intestinal upset, and change in appetite (which may be caused by an aversion to food or smells). When Things Don’t Get Better in the Second Trimester For most women, the body learns to deal with the increased hormones and the symptoms dissipate after three months of pregnancy. However, for some women the symptoms persist. This may have to do with genetics - some women are predisposed (based on how fast their body metabolized hormones) to experience a more difficult pregnancy. However, these symptoms may have nothing to do with the increased hormones, they may, in fact, have more to do with nutritional status. Metabolic vs. Nutrition It’s important for a woman to know if her persistent symptoms are related to nutritional status or a metabolic issue. If it is nutrition, than the course of action would be to adjust the diet and increase supplements to support nutritional needs. This is often the traditional approach. However, if it is a metabolic issue, this approach won’t help and may in fact be fruitless since the additional nutrients won’t be metabolized and absorbed. Preconception Nutrition Many women shift their focus to nutrition after they get pregnant. Kristin recommends starting to focus on nutrition at least twelve weeks before attempting to get pregnant. This includes focusing on nutrition and taking prenatal vitamins. However, not all prenatal vitamins are formulated optimally. Selecting a Prenatal Vitamin For most women, a single prenatal vitamin is not going to do the trick. Most prenatal vitamins are not formulated correctly and may include unnecessary elements like dyes, fillers and non-natural ingredients. Prenatal Iron Many prenatal vitamins contain iron and this is something that Kristin does NOT recommend. Iron slows down your gastrointestinal tract and can cause constipation. Your digestive system will also slow down due to pregnancy so having too much iron in your system when you become pregnant can exacerbate the nausea and vomiting common in the first trimester. In addition, iron binds with calcium which decreases the body’s ability to absorb both minerals. Only 9 - 10% of women actually need to supplement their iron during pregnancy so it should not be the default. Unclear Pregnancy Nutritional Needs The only official recommendations Americans have (from the Food Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine, or the CDC) for nutritional needs during pregnancy is 400 - 800 micrograms of folic acid and 100 - 150 micrograms of iodine. That’s it. Kristin recommends also including at least 250 milligrams of DHA and 100 milligrams of EPA (essential fatty acids and omega 3s) which are beneficial to fetal brain development. B vitamins , specifically 100 micrograms of methylated B 12. The other B vitamins (1, 3, and 6) are also important to keep energy up during pregnancy and for neurological development for the fetus. Pregnant women should also be getting 500 mg of calcium, and look at magnesium, zinc, selenium, chromium, copper, vitamin A and D. Healthy Diet May Not Be Enough Even women with a very healthy, clean diet may need to take a second look at their actual nutrient intake. With farming practices being what they are, food doesn’t hold as much nutrients as it used to. This is why many women need supplements to get all of the nutrients they need. Eating macro (not from big farms) is another way to increase nutrient intake through food. To be sure, women can have their micronutrients test through a functional medicine doctor (or clinic) to determine if they are deficient on a cellular level. Make Sure its Methylated When considering supplements with B vitamins, look for the “methylated” form. This is the bio-available version so it makes it easier for the body to absorb and digest. Specifically, methylated folate and methylated B vitamins. Mystery Solved Conversations with Katherine revealed that her preconception of nutrition had not been ideal which meant that her body was starting the pregnancy at a deficit. In addition, her current tests showed that she was extremely low in all of her vitamins and minerals. Plus, her test were high in a few inflammatory markers (specifically High Sensitivity CRP) so it was no wonder she was dealing with joint stiffness. Getting sufficient nutrients when you have morning sickness can be a challenge. This is why choosing activated, natural and methylated vitamins is so critical because then the body can absorb them very quickly and use them more efficiently. Katherine started with the methylated prenatal vitamin Prenatal Brilliance by Vibrant Beginning. Within a week the nausea had subsided. This prenatal has a good blend of all the necessary vitamins but Katherine was so deficient we topped it up with extra B6 and Vitamin D. To further treat her inflammation, we added an EPA and DHA blend form Prenatal Brilliance which would also help the baby’s brain development. Eliminating Health Mysteries For Katherine we were able to identify the cause of her extended morning sickness and help her feel better and provide more nutrients to her baby in less than a week. She thought she was doing everything right, but she’d chosen the wrong prenatal supplement. Who would have guessed that the cure was the cause? Could this be the missing clue for you or someone in your life? Links: Thanks to my guest Kristin Mallon. Ilene Grabel (University of Denver, USA) XXI IDP Industrial Development and Policy Lecture. When Things Don’t Fall Apart: Global Financial Governance and Developmental Finance in an Age of Productive Incoherence by Ilene Grabel (The MIT Press, 2017). Winner of the 2018 British International Studies Association International Political Economy Group Book Prize and the 2019 International Studies Association International Political Economy Section Best Book Award. In When things Don’t Fall Apart, Ilene Grabel makes a simple but controversial claim, based on the work of the eminent social scientist Albert O. Hirschman. Grabel argues that as concerns global financial governance and development finance we are now in a period that she calls productive incoherence. Unlike the Keynesian period of the middle 20th century and the neoliberal period that followed, the current conjuncture lacks an overarching theoretical framework to guide financial governance. In its absence, Grabel maps the proliferation of institutional innovation at the national, regional, and transregional levels. These experiments are grounded in a spirit of Hirschmanian pragmatism rather than Keynesian or neoclassical dogmatism. They are ad hoc, often limited in scope, and even inconsistent with each other. They are in that sense incoherent. The book’s novel normative claim is that this incoherence is productive. It is allowing for new institutional and policy innovations that are contributing to a pluripolar financial governance architecture that is more robust and offers greater opportunities for problem solving and experimentation than the coherent architecture it is displacing. Grabel substantiates these claims with empirically-rich case studies that explore the effects of recent crises on established and new networks of financial governance (such as the G-20); transformations within the IMF; institutional innovations in liquidity support and project finance from the national to the transregional levels; and the “rebranding” of capital controls. Grabel acknowledges, however, that the incoherent transformations underway also pose grave risks. She considers these risks in the concluding chapter of the book. Speaker Biography: Ilene Grabel is Professor of International Finance and co-director of the graduate program in Global Finance, Trade, and Economic Integration at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver (USA). Grabel has worked as a consultant to the International Poverty Centre for Inclusive Growth of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNCTAD/G-24, United Nations University/World Institute for Development Economics Research, and UNDP’s Human Development Report Office. Grabel has also been a consultant to Action Aid, to the coalition “New Rules for Global Finance,” was an Expert Advisor to the Third World Network project on capital controls and free trade agreements; is a member of the Task Force on Regulating Global Capital Flows for Long-Run Development (of the Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-range Future, Boston University), has been a member since 2013 of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of the European Parliament, and since 1987 has been a staff economist with the Center for Popular Economics. We spoke with Ilene Grabel, Professor at the University of Denver and Co-director of the MA program in Global Finance, Trade & Economic Integration at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies. Ilene just published a very timely, interesting and important book on the evolution of the global financial governance and its institutions: When Things Don’t Fall Apart: Global Financial Governance and Developmental Finance in an Age of Productive Incoherence (MIT Press, 2017). In the foreword, Dani Rodrick from Harvard University defines the book as follows: “It happens only rarely and is all the more pleasurable because of it. You pick up a manuscript that fundamentally changes the way you look at certain things. This is one such book. Ilene Grabel has produced a daring and delightful reinterpretation of developments in global finance since the Asian financial crisis of 1997–1998.” The book is an account of the gradual, uneven, disconnected, ad hoc, and pragmatic innovations in global financial governance and developmental finance induced by the global financial crisis. In When Things Don’t Fall Apart, Ilene Grabel challenges the dominant view that the global financial crisis had little effect on the financial institutions. Most observers discount all but grand, systemic ruptures in institutions and policy. Grabel argues instead that the global crisis induced inconsistent and ad hoc discontinuities in global financial governance and developmental finance that are now having profound effects on emerging market and developing economies. Grabel’s chief normative claim is that the resulting incoherence in global financial governance is productive rather than debilitating. In the age of productive incoherence, a more complex, dense, fragmented, and pluripolar form of global financial governance is expanding possibilities for policy and institutional experimentation, policy space for economic and human development, financial stability and resilience, and financial inclusion. All this in a very enjoyable book that students, scholars, policymakers and managers of financial institutions should read right now.
