Hebrews 5:12 The clear command and expectation for us as believers, is that having been saved, we ought to grow up unto a place of Christian maturity!  What does Christian maturity look like?  In part, it looks like maturity in our understanding of doctrine!  This is no small matter.  Paul rebuked the Hebrew believers because he had truths to impart to them concerning the person of Christ that they were not able to receive due to their immaturity!!  One cannot blame a child for not being able to understand adult concepts, it's not their fault, they're a child.  However, this is not Paul's complaint.  Paul's complaint is this; “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat” (Heb. 5:12).

Introduction For about 40 years now, I have been a Christian Disciple - a follower of Jesus. It has been an exciting journey on the road of life. I have had my ups and my downs through that journey of 40 years. Most of it I have forgotten. But this I do remember - I know that Jesus has been there with me. I know, that I know, that I know. After my conversion and baptism, I was taken in hand and discipled. Once a week, for about a year, I had a midweek meeting with a mentor, for prayer, bible study, accountability and guidance. Right Mouse click to save this as a mp3 audio file From my observation of Christianity today, that experience would now be rare, as Discipleship is generally in the control of a home group. That works well if that new convert gets some form of bible study, prayer and accountability. Often though, that is not the case and the home group is more an extended social club. Or we are just told to get on with it ourselves and the church isn't interested in helping in lifelong discipleship, outside of Sundays or home groups. The Christianity I see today is broad and wide, but it is also in large parts, wafer thin - there appears to be not much depth to it. ----more---- The very idea of discipleship is almost anathema in some church circles today, and dare I say, that is why churches are depleting across this land - even within those that would identify themselves as 'evangelical'. People in those churches may know what to believe, but they probably do not know why they believe it and how it affects their behaviour. People coming in the front door and going out the back door - that's if they even enter a church in the first place! I know many Christians who don't attend a church regularly, for all sorts of reasons. So given that, what does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ and what difference does it make? 1. What is a Disciple? Firstly, let's look at what a Disciple is! As I said, the words 'Disciple' and 'Discipleship' are almost dirty words in some church circles today. I guess because we don't like the word 'discipline' in the church today. A Christian Disciple, is somebody who has accepted Jesus call on their life and they are a follower and learner of Him. Before He ascended, Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:18-20: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." In these verses Jesus commanded his Disciples to go and make other disciples. Note Jesus did not say go make converts. Billy Graham once said, "To only go around making converts and not offering some form of discipleship and aftercare, is a form of spiritual abuse." Many people have been hurt down through the years this way. It's like leaving a newborn baby floundering for help, only for the cries to go unheard. No! Jesus said go train people, give instructions to others about this new way of living and mark them with baptism! Discipleship of Jesus means that Christian Disciples are to train, be trained, instruct and be instructed in the way of life Jesus showed. To listen to some Churches today, Christian Discipleship is all about a form of spiritual belief where it is just believing, and nothing to do with training, instruction and following Jesus' way in life. Too many Christians I talk to and know have fallen into the belief, that belief is enough. Note, I did not say they were not saved! Oh they may have their salvation, but they are also holding onto that salvation by their fingernails rather than having a full grip! They are being taught that church is all about having a high entertainment value. They are being taught, either implicitly or explicitly, that they don't have to work out their own salvation. They are being taught that they don't have to take up their own cross daily. I know they are being told that, because I have talked to them! A disciple of Jesus Christ is not just somebody who believes in Him. Rather, being a disciple means accepting Jesus' call to follow Him, and letting Him permeate every aspect of life. Discipleship involves taking up your cross daily in response to Jesus' command over you. Taking it up daily, not as a once in a lifetime offer or once a week on a Sunday. Is that you? So if that's what a Christian Disciple is, what is the goal of being a Disciple? 2. What is the goal of a Disciple? The Apostle of love, John, wrote in 1 John 2:3-6 "We know that we have come to know Jesus if we obey his commands. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did." The ultimate goal for any Christian Disciple, is to be radical and living a life worthy of Jesus and undergoing constant life change and transformation. A Christian Disciple is somebody learning to be like Jesus in every facet of life, practising His presence with them every second of every day, and so engaging their life with Him so that He truly lives through them. It is living a life which reflects Jesus the Son of God, by total submission to the Holy Spirit, which is to the praise of God the Father. It is not done out of some slavish form of guilt, but borne out of a desire and love! Christian Disciples are to be radical and endeavouring to reach the goal of being Jesus to others! This is done by a constant renewing of the mind and having a willing heart to be transformed. It is by loving others in such a way, that the end of a Christian Disciple's generosity is only when their resources have expired. How generous are you towards others, particularly those others who are not within your own circle of friends? A Christian Disciple is to live and walk as Jesus did; imitating Jesus and obeying his command to take up their cross daily and follow Him closely. A life imitating Jesus, not out of guilt, but out of love! Dietrich Bonhoeffer put it like this: "When Jesus Christ calls a person, he bids them die, die to their own selfish self." Dying to ones self, is the loving of others, in action. Again, that is not a popular message in churches today. Loving others sacrificially, is radically showing Jesus' command to "love one another" (John 15:17) and putting those words into practise. That means all Disciples of Jesus Christ are expected to be self-sacrificing, having taken up their own cross - looking to the interests of others, before fulfilling their own interests and desires. How is that for being radical Disciples of Jesus Christ in the 21st century? How else can people out there in the community know that we love God, if not by seeing that we love each other and them with extravagant generosity? Being a Disciple of Jesus Christ is being called to a life of total loving obedience and freely submitting to Jesus Christ. Being a Disciple of Jesus Christ is freely letting that obedience and submission permeate all areas of life! As Christian individuals, whether we like it or not, we are linked together in a Christian community through rebirth, and our relationship exists only through our relationship with Jesus Christ. Look around you now. If that person next to you or at the other end of the row is a Christian, then they are in relationship with you, through Jesus Christ. That person in another church in this town, who is in relationship with Jesus Christ, is in relationship with you, through the same Jesus Christ. Whether you like it or not, that is fact. You cannot escape that person - however much you may like to think that you can. We, as Christian Disciples, are interdependent upon one another, bound by a corporate inclusivity. The church community of disciples of Jesus Christ is to be dynamic by nature. Within the church in Ringwood, and by that, I mean all those who would say they are Christians in this community; there are too many individualistic Christians. Not just Ringwood, but certainly in the Western Church in general, and that I think, is one of the great failings of 21st century Western Christianity. There are far too many Christians, who wants all the benefits of being a Christian Disciple, but don't want to the responsibility of working at living and growing as a Christian Disciple! For instance, if we say "I love my neighbour" and yet refuse to help when that person needs help, what does that tell your neighbour? It certainly doesn't say that you love them! And who is your neighbour? Look around. Loving others is an endemic part of living as a Christian Disciple. Loving God and loving others shows you are reaching towards the ultimate goal for any Christian Disciple, which is to be radical and living a life worthy of Jesus and undergoing constant life change and transformation. Now a couple of questions to delve deeper and ponder to ourselves for a few minute... Q1. How have I taken up my own cross in order to follow the Master, Jesus? Q2. How have I wanted all the benefits of being a Christian Disciple but not the responsibility? 3. Living and Growing as a Christian Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 3:18: 'And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.' Living As 21st century people, we are inculcated to think that success is instant. We like everything instantly, we want it now, and if we don't get it now, watch out! We live in an instant society which wants everything now and to be gratified instantly. Just a cursory look down the High Street will tell you that! But success, as I am sure you are well aware, is not instant. Ask those Olympic Gold medallists if their success was instant and they just turned up in London 2 weeks ago, to compete in a sport they had never played before. Of course it wasn't - it took a lot of hard graft and determination! The same is true in living successfully as Christian Disciples, as followers of Jesus Christ. It can be hard work, but again, we are not left alone to do anything in our own strength, but in the strength of the Almighty Holy Spirit who lives within us! Living as a Christian Disciple is not a matter of expecting spiritual maturity to occur overnight, it is an exiciting journey with many wow factors through out! Fullness of life is achieved as we allow Jesus Christ to live this fullness of life through us, so that we start to think and respond like He would, to the people and circumstances around us. Where we are learning to see circumstances and people from God's perspective, rather than reacting on the basis of feelings. Yes it is hard, but it is worth it, and it can be done if we rely on the Holy Spirit who lives within us and empowering us. Growing A vital part of living is growing - just as babies grow to be adults! The process of growing, becoming more like Jesus is, in one of the big words of theology: sanctification. It is like the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. It is a cleansing, and a yearning to live a life worthy of the Master Servant, Jesus Christ. Sometimes it's a difficult path, but nobody said that growing to be more like Jesus was going to be easy. But He is with you, through the Holy Spirit who is within you! How easy we forget that fact! Now you may well ask, that if I am growing and being sanctified, why do I still continue to sin? Firstly, you sin because you choose to sin. Nobody else can take the rap. The devil and the world may tempt you to sin, but it is only you that does the sinning. So do not succumb to the wiles and ways of the devil and the world! Tell them to get lost! Secondly, when you became a Christian, you gained a new nature, albeit in embryonic form. As this new nature grows, your old nature shrivels and shrinks yet refuses to die quickly. So our new nature, now that you are a Disciple of Jesus, fights against your old nature. So what can a Disciple do? As Christian Disciples, we are not left alone to fend for ourselves. We overcome sin & temptation through the power of the Holy Spirit, who was promised by Jesus. The Holy Spirit works in us, and assists our new nature in overcoming the old nature. We may struggle in our own strength, but with the power of the Holy Spirit, our old nature shrivels. Remind yourself that temptation itself is not sin! Otherwise Jesus Himself would have sinned, and we know that even though He faced constant temptation, we know for certain, that He did not sin. It is rather, that as Christian Disciples, having died and been raised with Jesus Christ, we now live in the freedom of the indwelling Holy Spirit. The beloved Apostle John wrote in 1 John 4: "You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world." Christian Disciples aren't made of Chocolate and melt under pressure. Christian Disciples are born of the Spirit of God and His power is ever reliable! We as Christian Disciples are to love. If however, a Christian Disciple does succumb to temptation and sins then, when that Disciple recognizes that they have sinned, they need to repent quickly! Unconfessed sin soon becomes a heavy burden. Confession & repentance are needed. Not a confession borne from constant grace-less guilt but rather a repentance born from grace! In a lot of church services, that is why the confession of sin comes at the start of services. It is as John Stott once said "penitence is to come before praise!" Lets have a time once more to reflect again, delve a bit deeper with a couple of questions and then after a couple of minutes, we will have another song. Q1. How can I live a life worthy of, and pleasing to, Jesus? Q2. What pressures am I constantly confronted by? 4. Going on! Lots of those who claim to be Christian, would also rightly claim to be John 3:16 people "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." But we are not to just leave it there, we are to press on and be 1 John 3:16 people "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters." Not only are we to live and grow as Christian Disciples, we are also to go on and persevere as Christian Disciples. Yes, I know sometimes life can be difficult but we can persevere because as Christian Disciples, we have the living God inside us, the Holy Spirit empowering us, comforting, consoling and counselling, ever encouraging us onwards and upwards. At least that's my experience of Him! Not only are you to live as a Christian Disciple, you are also to grow as a Christian Disciple. Not only are you to grow, you are to persevere. As a Christian Disciple, here is a hallmark to signify that you are persevering. That word is servant. Servant. The word servant as I am sure you know, is key in Scripture. The supreme servant, Jesus, talked about it a lot as well as living a life of service! When a Christian Disciple serves, God's honour is released, because service shows the beauty and glory of Jesus Christ to those being served and to those watching. That is to be our motive for service - the release of God's honour and He is glorified. Serving is never to be about what you and I can get out of it. When that is the motive, God is not glorified. Serving is to be borne out of love for others and no other reason. We can choose to serve selfishly as Judas did or we can choose to serve lovingly like John did. God's glory, honour and supremacy are to be the goal of a Christian Disciple's life. Spiritual growth comes from serving. This is because what ever is given in service of God and others, faith grows and Jesus Christ gives back even more. Why do we do the things we do for the church and others? Is it motivated out of love for Christ? Or is it motivated out of some vain self satisfying glory and duty? Serving others is a sign of faith in God and are trusting in Him. It's a visible aspect of invisible faith. Service is the outward expression of inner beliefs. Serving is an outward expression of inner faith - an external working out of salvation. Serving God and others is the mark of a spiritually mature (or spiritually maturing) Christian Disciple and through service, the greatest servant of all, Jesus Christ, is reflected. It is one of the main hallmarks of a living, growing and persevering Christian Disciple. Not only are we to serve but we are also to show our dependency on others by allowing them to serve us when we are in need. Again this is counter-cultural - a culture where people are to be independent of others. Remember Jesus washing the feet of his disciples and what he said to Peter when Peter protested about having his feet washed? As Christian Disciples, we are interdependent upon each other. In the same way one part of the human body is dependence on another part. That is why we serve each other and use generously for the benefit of others what we have been given by God. The Gospel is "God helps those who cannot help themselves." Yet so often, we deny it. We want it for ourselves, and more often than not, we are not willing to have that attitude towards others. An endemic part of Discipleship is our active work of service, loving others and allowing others to serve and love ourselves - all to the glory of God alone, through Jesus Christ and in the creative power of the Holy Spirit. As Christian Disciples, we are to be as Jesus Christ to others, to serve and be served by submitting ourselves to the Holy Spirit and His authority. By doing this the lives of other people could be changed to the glory of God! I know people who are worried about how others are serving. Don't worry about how that other person is serving God and other people. Be more concerned how you yourself are serving and why you are doing it. People can be changed for God's greater glory because of your acts of service and worship. Now a further couple of questions to ponder to ourselves for a few minutes! Q1. How can I, both improve my serve and also allow others to serve me? Q2. Why do I do what I do for others? 5. Warning And now lastly, very briefly, we have a warning! The Apostle Paul writing in Philippians 2:3-4 "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." Contrast those Paul-ine values to those of our society, where morality can be summed up with this kind of attitude: "Good is self and self is good. Greed is good and good is greed!" It is used in advertising to great effect. A brief walk down the High Street will show you that! That is where the importance of ones own self, is placed at higher importance than other people. Individualism imbued with self-reliance and personal independence. Even when help and compassion are offered, so often there are strings attached and hoops to be jumped through. Sadly, it is not just within society that this exists, but it has also infiltrated into some parts of the Church. Where that occurs, it is in denial of the basic rule of compassion and mercy, which dictates that Christian Disciples are to be lovingly helping and serving others, because those others are also humans created in the image of God, loved by God and so should be loved unconditionally by those who proclaim to be God's people - the Church. Denying that basic need to others is selfishness and places others below our own selves. Individualism is not showing love towards others, and can never be considering placing others higher than your own self. It certainly could not be construed as serving other people, to always place your own desires above those of others. Individualism hampers spiritual growth because it impedes loving others and our servant-hood of God and others. Conclusion We have seen that those who claim to be Christian Disciples, are to live for Jesus, grow in maturity and keep on going forward in faith in Jesus. We discovered together that we are to train, be trained, instruct and be instructed in the way of life that Jesus showed. We discovered that the Christian Disciple is to live a life which is constantly "dealing with God" in all matters - just as Jesus the Master Servant did. The growth of those claiming to be Christian Disciples is discerned in their love for, and service of, all others - not just those within their close circle of friends & acquaintances. The world out there is watching. I know they are watching, because they tell me. Each church is only one generation from closing. As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. (Ephesians 2:1-3) Paul begins chapter two with some hard news.  After this massive, cosmic picture of all that God has done, is doing, and will do across the universe and arc of time, Paul sharply zooms in to the situation in Ephesus.  “As for you,” he says, glaring now directly at them, “you were dead in your transgressions and sins…”  For the Ephesians, that was quite literally true.  They had all grown up pagan, totally outside the faith until the gospel came finally also to them. But then Paul slowly zooms out again.  “All of us” he continues.  Paul now includes himself.  He recalls his days of persecuting the church.  Paul too had been dead in his transgressions before Jesus met him on the road.   But really, Paul is now including all of us.  Not just these formerly pagan Ephesians.  Not just the formerly church-persecuting Paul.  But all of us, including those of us today who read this letter.  This is perhaps a bit odd, because many of us were born directly into the covenant of grace—directly into the church—such that there was never a pre-Christian time in our lives.  Never a time when “dead in our transgressions” was the complete and final word about us.  We have just always belonged to Jesus.   Yet there's still something true here for us.  Paul is talking figuratively here.  He's making a caricature, throwing sharp contrast onto the situation to purposefully make it stick out.  While a number of us may never have had a pre-Christian time in our lives, that doesn't mean that the ways of sin and death have not stained our souls.  It may be harder to see because we didn't have a conversion moment, but the same struggle is still there.  The Christian tradition throughout the ages has talked about Original Sin to capture this idea. All of us do still struggle with transgressions and sins.  We were born with it.  Sin came with our humanity.  It is highlighted a thousand times over in the news and social feeds that cross our screens, but it's also there in the personal, secret sins that you never could quite defeat.  Or the fantasies you entertain.  The vengeance you desire.  The words that slip out accidentally in fights with your spouse, children, or parents.     Many of us may never have been “dead in our transgressions” in the way pre-Christian Paul or the Ephesians were, but that doesn't mean that we don't need saving.  Indeed, it is only because of that saving grace of Jesus Christ that death has never had it's hold on us.  We will of course speak of this more as Paul carries on into some of those strong, Reformation Day Faith-Alone, Grace-Alone texts in this chapter that are for all the Saints—which is what today is: All Saints Day.  For now though, it is enough simply to remember our baptisms.  A plunging under the waters to picture our death to sin and death in all its ways as we die in the death of Christ which defeated both, so that, rising up out of the waters on the other side, we might have life instead.  His life.  A new life.  It is the same drama that Paul is painting here in the opening verses of chapter two. Though traces of death remain: it is not the final word about us.     Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)

These are the marks of the circumcision, the indicators that we belong to Christ and are part of the new covenant community of believers.

Everyone knew that those who accused Paul accused him because of Jesus. As Paul, we are all to be witnesses of what God has done for us.

Revelation 3:7-8 Here before us in the third chapter of the Book of Revelation, is a Church, to whom our Lord had nothing by way of rebuke to bring.  That was of course, not the case for the vast majority of the Churches that He addressed in Revelation chapters 2 and 3.  In my reckoning, there were only two out of the seven Churches addressed, for which our Lord had nothing bad to say and both these Churches shared something precious in common that I believe was key in contributing to this.  You say, Brother, what was it?  Both found themselves in the midst of persecution and tribulation, amidst great difficulty and affliction for representing the name of Jesus Christ.  Both were WEAK in their own natural strength. Whatever we may think of persecution, and whatever discomfort we may feel at the thought of having to go through afflictions and trials —one thing is for sure...IT DOES US GOOD!!  Maybe you’re going through a particular trial of incredible difficulty and you feel as though you can’t go on.  Be encouraged dear soul, the God we serve is the God of the little strength Christian.  There is grace in abundance to help you through if you will but call upon the Lord.

Acts 26v19-32 "Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared first to them of Damascus, at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.   For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple, and tried to kill me.  Having therefore obtained the help that is from God, I stand to this day testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would happen, how the Christ must suffer, and how, by the resurrection of the dead, he would be first to proclaim light both to these people and to the Gentiles." As he thus made his defence, Festus said with a loud voice, "Paul, you are crazy! Your great learning is driving you insane!" But he said, "I am not crazy, most excellent Festus, but boldly declare words of truth and reasonableness. For the king knows of these things, to whom also I speak freely. For I am persuaded that none of these things is hidden from him, for this has not been done in a corner. King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe." Agrippa said to Paul, "With a little persuasion are you trying to make me a Christian?" Paul said, "I pray to God, that whether with little or with much, not only you, but also all that hear me this day, might become such as I am, except for these bonds."  The king rose up with the governor, and Bernice, and those who sat with them.  When they had withdrawn, they spoke one to another, saying, "This man does nothing worthy of death or of bonds." Agrippa said to Festus, "This man might have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar." The Gospel of Jesus Christ has spread throughout the Roman Empire, and Paul was imprisoned in Caesarea.  The Jewish leaders wanted Paul tried and executed, and Festus was willing to go along with that idea.  However, Paul, ever guided by the Holy Spirit, appealed directly to Caesar! Paul was a Roman citizen and any Roman citizen had that right!  So after what we call the three missionary journeys, Paul is now on a final journey - to Rome! We jump forward now to Acts 27 to look at this final journey. Final Journey Begins Luke records the course of the voyage in detail, and we can feel just how people travelled back in that time. The prisoners were probably put on the boat at Caesarea. They sailed up the coast of Sidon, to the east and north of Cyprus. At Sidon the centurion in charge of Paul, "in kindness...", allowed him to go to his friends so they might provide for his needs' (27v3). Now as far as we know, Paul had never visited Sidon although perhaps he had met Sidonese people on his travels. This was to be the last time he would have had the fellowship and family worship of a Christian home and a wider company of believers. Strengthened and encouraged by this group of Christians, Paul was ready for any trouble that lay ahead for him. After two weeks sailing, they landed at Myra, in what is now southern Turkey. They then changed ships, for one heading towards Italy, and their next stop was Crete. The time of year was now late October, and the weather was quickly getting worse (27v10). The captain and owner of the ship thought that it was wise to seek a new place in which to stay for the winter. Paul foresaw the disaster, and said so. Paul, it must be said, did believe that God was ruler of the winds and waves and would get him to Rome come what may. He was simply stating that it was better to be safe rather than sorry, to arrive in Italy safely in spring rather than not arriving at all. Paul's advice set the scene for the events that happen later on in the voyage in which God once again confirmed Paul's discernment and calling by miracles and mighty works, even if it had no immediate effect on those responsible for the decision to sail on regardless. The sailors were not fools however. They waited until the weather improved before starting to sail from Crete (27v13). Their optimism was soon blown away by a strong wind, which started to blow them towards Africa. Day after day after day, for two weeks they ran with the wind, hoping that the wind would stop, and at the same time seemingly waiting for the ship to sink. The sailors were probably starting to reflect on their life and commitments, or the lack of commitments. During this time, Paul intervened to encourage their disheartened spirits. Encouragement A call for faith (27v21-26) - By this time, everybody on board must have been aware that Paul was right in his warning not to sail on. He said they should keep their courage, because no-one would lose their life, even if the ship was damaged beyond repair. But why should they believe this? Because God had sent an angel to assure Paul that he would arrive in Rome, to stand trial before Caesar. Paul had faith in God that it would happen just as he had promised. They should take courage. All people, whether Christian or not, are in the same boat of life. All people share a common life of ups and downs. Godless sailors lived because of godly Paul. Yet it is up to us as Christians to share a message of hope to all those who do not believe. These sailors, even though they were blessed by God to survive this disaster, may not survive the next voyage of disaster, and then they would end up in hell. Regardless of their blessings, they stayed lost if they didn't come to Christ in faith. For Paul, however, to live was Christ and to die was gain (Philippians 1 :21). Whatever trials we face as believers, we must hold fast to the glory of Jesus. The real issue, Paul tells his shipmates, is not whether we live or die, but what will you do with Jesus? Paul spoke of God's promises and his faith in God. He invited them to believe in God, just as he did. A call for unity - stay together (27v27-32) - Their crisis came fourteen days out of Crete. They were about to land at Malta, in conditions that were worse than awful. Some sailors were trying to sneak off in the life-boat. Paul, however, insisted that all hands were necessary if any were to be saved, and the centurion prevented them from escaping. A call for effort - The promise of God, always includes the means to fulfil His promise. God doesn't commend or give His power to the faithful, so that they may be lazy and not plan, when there is a definite reason to be careful. When God makes a promise to us, we must be responsible to receive his promise. God promises to save us, yet it is our responsibility to accept by faith His Son Jesus Christ. Paul always reminded them of God's promise. He urged them to take food so that they would be strong when the time was needed for strength. He once again reminded them of the promise of God. He also witnessed to them, when eating, by giving thanks to God. Paul was a man of a God and a man of action, a man of the Spirit and common-sense, a man who combined spirituality with sanity, faith with works, a man who was heavenly minded and of earthly use. Christians, should be the most practical people in the world, because the Lord has given us the real truth about the real world and its real needs. How do you respond to the world? Are you like Paul? Philippians 2:1–4 Sermon Preview“Hey you guys, get along back there!” How many of us have yelled that to kids in the back seat—or had our parents yell it at us? Getting along is not a distinctly Christian thing. We all desire the fruits of tolerating each other: peace, harmony, comfort, etc. But as a church, we’re called to more than just tolerating each other.In Philippians, Paul writes to two Christian women, Euodia and Syntyche, “Get along ladies!” (Phil 4:2– 3). Unlike our appeal to kids in the back seat, Paul’s appeal to unity in the Philippian church is distinctly Christian. And he starts that appeal all the way back in chapter two.Paul writes in Philippians 2:1–4, “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” What makes this appeal to unity distinctly Christian is the same thing that makes everything Paul writes distinctly Christian: Paul connects it to the gospel of Jesus Christ.Paul could have skipped over verse 1 and gone straight to his appeal: “be of the same mind, have the same love, be in full accord and of one mind.” But he doesn’t. He grounds his appeal in the magnificent realities of the gospel. And this is where we should ground our striving for unity in the church. Too often, we skip straight to “How can we get along?” without looking at or connecting it to what Christ has done to unite us. This Sunday, we’re going to linger over these four verses and think deeply about the magnificent realities of the gospel and how they connect to Paul’s call for us as the church to walk in humble unity. My prayer is that our hearts would be stirred by the powerful realities of the gospel to humble ourselves as Jesus humbled himself and walk in Christ-exalting unity together. Ruralité : "L'exode urbain a commencé" L'ancien député de la Nièvre revient sur la crise des Gilets jaune et le déclassement des territoires ruraux. "Est-ce que les choses peuvent changer ? Je pense que oui. L'angoisse que crée le réchauffement climatique peut accélérer un exode urbain qui a commencé depuis quelques années." "L'exode rural a été au bout de son histoire, il y a un désir de vivre hors des villes" estime Christian Paul qui souligne que le développement de la fibre optique notamment "pousse vers les campagnes". Municipales : "La gauche s'est insularisée, il faut de grandes coalitions"  "Les municipales sont doublement importantes" analyse l'ancien socialiste frondeur du quinquennat Hollande. "Tous les problèmes et notamment les questions écologiques trouvent une part de solution à l'échelle locale. Les maires on la durée devant eux (...) La deuxième raison est que ces élections doivent démontrer que des coalitions sont nécessaires." Christian Paul estime que "la gauche s'est insularisée (...) Les municipales doivent être l'occasion de grandes coalitions autour d'un projet, avec les écologistes, les gauches et des collectifs de citoyens. Ce sont ces coalitions que j'espère et que je suis prêt à soutenir." Elus locaux : "Depuis 30 ans, on a démonétisé les maires" Le socialiste commente le futur projet de loi sur les élus locaux que le gouvernement présentera en juillet. "Depuis 20-30 ans, on a démonétisé la fonction des maires" estime l'ancien maire qui dénonce une forme de "pensée unique" sur les intercommunalités. "Les technocrates de Bercy et du ministère de l'Intérieur allaient dans le même sens. Il faut des fusions à tout prix. Là on a une sorte de rédemption." "Il faut réhabiliter l'action communale, il faut revendiquer un droit au village (...) Si avec cette loi on arrête de tirer sur les élus locaux, en terme de respiration démocratique, ce sera une bonne chose."

I received an email in response to an old video here: https://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?m=t&s=5317151991 Here is the text of that email: "You tried to separate baptism from belief. But it may not be in Paul's argumentation in Romans 4 but it is clearly linked in scripture elsewhere: Mark 16:15-16 Acts 2:38; 9:18; 10:43-48; 18:8; 22:16 Rom. 6:3-4 Gal. 3:27 1 Peter 3:21 These are just a few that connect faith with baptism. For one who prides himself in using scripture you sloppily dealt with this one and scripture agrees with the Priest. How is baptism a work? It is a work of God to wash man from his sin once he has believed and repented. Where in the Jewish law does it command us to be baptized? BTW you did some nifty dancing with James 2. Bad exegesis again. If what you are saying is true then James only applies to people who claim to have faith. Which begs the question because wouldn't that be every Christian? Paul talks about faith apart from works (of the law) he is reference the heresy of the judiazers who claimed you had to be under the law and observe it in some external way to be saved (Romans 2?). James distinguishes a different kind of works, in fact he is talking about faith and works apart from "works of the law" because the law hadn't been given yet. See the difference? James 2:22 is a keyverse. His faith and works were "Sunergeo". Dang, there is that pesky EO synergism." This episode is my response

In der Sendung vom 08.01.2011 war Boris Gott (Liedermacher aus Dortmund) zu Gast. Er hatte sein aktuelles Album "Es ist nicht leicht ein Mensch zu sein" im Gepäck. Sag einige Stücke live im Studio und erzählte aus seinem Leben und seiner Stadt. Ferner führte Norbert Paul ein Interview mit der Österreichischen Band Tiefseetaucher und in der Serie Eldo* Senior erinnerte Christian Paul an den großartigen Musiker Gerry Rafferty: Es war am 16. April 1947 in der Schottischen Stadt Paisley, etwa 13 Kilometer von Glasgow, der Geburtsstätte von Sir William Wallace (ein Schottischer Freiheitskämpfer), da erblickte ein kleiner Junge die Welt. Seine Mutter Mary und sein Vater Joseph hatten bereits 2 Kinder. Der Bergarbeiter war kein guter Vater. Bereits im Alter von 16 Jahren arbeite der kleine Junge in einem Fischgeschäft. An den Wochenenden macht er Musik und gründete seine erste Band die "Mavericks". Mit 21 Jahren begann er professionell Musik zu komponieren. Sein wohl größter Hit entstand als Straßenmusiker in der Londoner U Bahn. Baker Street – ein Hommage an die Heimat von Sherlock Holmes und an die Zeit als Straßen Musiker. Seinen ersten Top Ten Hit in Großbritannien erreichte er mit der Band "Stealers Wheel". "Stock in the middle with u" International erfolgreich wurde Garry Rafferty erst mit seiner 1978 erschienen Solo Platte "City to City". Am 27. Novenber 2009 wurde sein letztes Album "Life goes on" veröffentlicht. Das Leben geht weiter… Gerry Rafferty verstarb am 04.01.2011 in Pool in England.
