Where You Go, I Will Go by Christina Fonthes is a gripping and poetic exploration of identity, migration, and finding where you feel you belong. Told across two timelines, blending events in the Congo and the UK, this powerful novel captures the ache of displacement and the quiet resilience of queer Black womanhood. This week I talk with Christina about her book, the books and experiences that inspired its creation and touch on the sensitive subjects contained within the pages. There's also talk of favourite books, unredeemable characters and what makes a character human in the eyes of the author and the reader. It's a deep one this week, people, so buckle up and enjoy the ride. I loved this opportunity to talk with Christina about this novel, and I think it's a wonderful read. Christina's Links Instagram Website Buy the book Bookshop.org Waterstones Foyles Amazon UK

Rare opportunity. Tenor, Bass (professional singer not over 25), musically talented, nice-sounding voices, for unique ensemble. Kindly give days and times when available [for rehearsals, etc.]” Out of that two-line ad, came one of the most celebrated music acts of the 20th century: the Comedian Harmonists. The internationally renowned vocal group made over 200 recordings, performed in over 150 concerts around the world and appeared in numerous films. They played the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Coliseum and Radio City Music Hall. And yet, for most, the name “Comedian Harmonists” doesn't ring a bell. How could that be? Well, the Comedian Harmonists rose to fame in the late 1920s and early 1930s in Germany — and half of its members were Jewish. Because of this, the Nazi regime designated the work of the Comedian Harmonists “degenerate art” and much of it was destroyed. Lost to history. But…not all of it. The little that there was inspired writer Bruce Sussman to dig into the story of the Comedian Harmonists and, with his artistic partner Barry Manilow, create a musical uncovering their music, artistry and stories for the world to know and remember. “Harmony” officially opened on Broadway November 13, 2023 at the Ethel Barrymore Theater . And yet, there is only so much history one can fit into a Broadway musical. As Bruce said… “I just needed to simplify, pair it down.” “There were so many things that I could have done, but I had to make choices. As Sondheim famously wrote, the choice may be wrong, but the choosing is right.” Harmony closed on February 4, 2024 but the lost history it resurrected is worth a closer look. This Is Our Time...to tell you about Harmony, and while the show has already closed on Broadway, you can listen to us tell you all about it if you take this podcast with you Where You Go! -- Have you heard of Damp January? The New York Times seems to think it's a worthy trend. Take a look at some of the history behind the real Comedian Harmonists, and there's now a podcast that goes through their history as well! Check out some clips from the earlier production of Harmony in LA that Christine got to see, featuring a very different direction than the version that made it to Broadway. It's interesting to see how New York Times gave Harmony a critic's pick in the off-Broadway iteration, while the Broadway production received a generally negative review from the same publication (though a different critic). -- Music featured in this episode: Harmony (The Cast Recording) Apple Music / Spotify / Amazon Music Marie - The Comedian Harmonists YouTube -- Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @BottomlessBway, our blog at https://bottomlessbway.home.blog, or email us at bottomlessbway@gmail.com! As winter's stillness permeates our lives, we gather this Sunday for our annual Service of Remembrance, a sacred ceremony to honor those who have transitioned from our physical realm. Coupled with this, we also pay homage to the indomitable spirit of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., inviting you to embrace the complex and demanding truth of his message beyond his popular portrayal. Through the ritual of candlelight, naming, and remembering, we keep the glow of their values and dreams alive, mirroring the humanist manifestation of eternal life. In making space for these memories, we are reminded of our shared responsibility in creating and embodying legacy. As we honor Dr. King and our loved ones, we not only acknowledge their impact but also ignite the path for those to come. This act of remembering and making space, allows us to honor the fullness of each other's stories. We come together this Sunday, to remember, honor, and recommit to this transformative work of making space. Opening Hymn- Spirit of Life (:27) Call to Worship and Words of Welcome- Rev. Dr. Slavin explores how they made big changes at Saint Louis University Medical School during his tenure resulting in lower rates of anxiety and depression while also INCREASING academic performance. Dr. Slavin also dives into student mindset, perfectionism, and resiliency. We hope you enjoy!  Stuart Slavin MD, MEd is Senior Scholar for Well-being at the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). A graduate of Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Slavin completed his residency training in pediatrics at UCLA and then served as a faculty member there for seventeen years before returning to Saint Louis University as Associate Dean for Curriculum. Over the past decade, Dr. Slavin led efforts at SLU to improve the mental health of medical students that produced dramatic decreases in rates of depression and anxiety in pre-clerkship students. He joined the ACGME in 2018 and is helping to lead efforts to improve the mental health of residents and faculty across the US.  At the ACGME, Dr. Slavin has continued to work on mental health challenges facing adolescents and young adults. In that capacity, he has conducted assessments of student mental health in seven school districts in California, Missouri, and Ohio.Websites1N5.org Where You Go is Not Who You'll Be by Frank Burni Big Life JournalState of Mind Speaker SeriesPsychology Today - Find a Therapist MindPeace Search for Provider (Cincinnati area specific) CDC Stats on Mental Health National Alliance on Mental Illness  Find 1N5 on social media: Facebook: www.facebook.com/1N5.org.stopthestigma/ Instagram: @1n5.org.stopthestigma/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/1N5_orgNational Resources: You don't have to be in a crisis to talk with someone. National Suicide Prevention Hotline - 1- 800-273-TALK (8255) The National Suicide Prevention Hotline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals.Crisis Text Line - Text HOME to 741741 The Crisis Text Line provides free, 24/7 mental health support via text message. We round off our mini-series on the book of Ruth asking the question - where is God? God is mentioned, but unusually for a book in the Bible, we don't actually hear from Him directly. What can we make of this story, it's place in the wider context of the Bible, and our daily experience of relationship with God?   Make sure to listen to our audio drama - Where You Go, written and directed by Fiona Stewart - available from wherever you got this podcast!   Show Notes Where You Go - Audio Drama from Bible 2020 Bags of Discovery Ruth Daily Devotionals LICC Resource - Ruth: Drawing on a Deeper Love

This week, Charlotte Pence, daughter of Vice President Mike Pence, joins us to share about her new book, Where You Go, and the most valuable lessons about life and faith that her father has taught her. And folks, we can assure you these lessons have nothing to do with politics! Also, it's time for the mid-term elections and that can only mean one thing … the Praisecast team ponders whether it is ever a good time to discuss politics on your social media pages. And if that's not enough, they 'kiss dating goodbye' … not really, but they take apart author Josh Harris's recent mea culpa and put it back together again! Fortunately, they didn't need to use any glue!

Jesus made it clear that the storms of life would come to those who follow the one true God and also to those who do not. What would be different would be how they would handle it? Ruth evidently saw that in how Naomi had come through the great tragedy. Sure she had cried but there was something else there that made Ruth want to cling to it, to her, to her God! This will be discussed as we revisit this classic episode of FaithWorks!Click here to listen
