Mark Niethammer preaches on Easter Sunday. Somedays, everything feels like it's going wrong and everywhere you turn there is bad news. When we're surrounded by the bad of the world, we get angrier, turn in on ourselves, and stew in our own misery. Remember what Jesus said throughout his life and take those things into your tomorrows. Love others, give generously, forgive. You can be the good news for someone else. Preaching text: Luke 24:1-12
Somedays your the dog the other days your the lampost, after all the drama of the weekend we now look forward to the league final

Interview with Ollee Owens. Canadian soul/blues powerhouse singer Ollee Owens announces the release of her new album, Nowhere to Hide, on October 25th through her Ollee Owens Music label imprint. The first single from Nowhere to Hide, “Some Days,” was released on August 30. Produced by Bobby Blazier, the music on Nowhere to Hide is also graced by the presence of Muscle Shoals all-star guitarist Will McFarlane on eight of the album's eleven tracks. “The writing of ‘Some Days' came out of a desire to acknowledge the ups and downs of our day-to-day experiences and at the same time call out the resilience of the human spirit no matter what we come up against,” Owens says. “Sonically, we imagined it as a blues-infused song that leaves the listener feeling happy. It was recorded in Nashville with some of the best session musicians in Music City: Chris Rodriguez, Craig Young, Bobby Blazier, and DeMarco Johnson. The energy in the room that day was palpable as the song began to take shape, capturing exactly what I heard in my head when we wrote the song, resulting in a soulful and hope-filled anthem.” After returning to music a decade ago and releasing 2022's Cannot Be Unheard, the Calgary-based blues/rock singer is better than ever with her latest dazzling, down-to-earth studio album Nowhere to Hide. It's one teeming with stylish, sophisticated jewels mined from blues, rock, and soul. Nowhere to Hide features eight co-writing credits by Owens and a few covers, including Bob Dylan's "Lord Protect My Child." Whether it's Owens' confident delivery fueling the driving title track, the infectious "Some Days," or the deliciously well-crafted "Shivers and Butterflies," Owens is as dynamic as the eleven-track album is flawless. "I learned so much," Owens says of the creative process, "especially, vocally, as there was real opportunity to dig deeper and embody the lyrics." Nowhere to Hide, recorded at Nashville's Sweetbriar Studio and Gnome Studios, shines with help from a who's who of acclaimed Nashville session musicians Blazier brought to the album. "Bobby has an incredible ability to bring people together," Owens says of Blazier. "We all got in the studio together, gave it everything we got, and made some great music." That great music derives from Owens' backstory in the farming community of New Bothwell, Manitoba. As a teen, she gravitated toward Dylan, Delta Blues, The Staple Singers, and Etta James. "When I came back to creating music, I really realized the depth and influence that particular style of music had on me," Owens says of her early listening habits. Owens and her husband started their family early and had three daughters, one of whom has a cognitive disability. After some soul-searching, and realizing her daughter had exceptional needs, she took a hiatus from music. "I focused on being present and engaged for my daughters," she says. As a result, "Lord Protect My Child" strikes an emotional chord as Owens pours her soul into it. "That song has really become close to my heart," she says. "My daughter is twenty-three now, but there's still a lot of vulnerability there. The desire for protecting and taking care of her will never go away." Owens will be playing a Canadian concert in October celebrating the release of Nowhere to Hide and has plans for further touring in the spring. She's also performed at the Roots Blues and BBQ Festival in Drumheller, Alberta, and Calgary's National Music Centre, among several other venues. Now with Nowhere to Hide, Owens will have a larger fan base thanks to an amazing album you would be wise to experience wherever you get your music. Ollee's Info /https://olleeowens.com/

A podcast to answer all your questions about productivity, time management, self-development and goal planning. My name is Carl Pullein, and I am your host of this show. It's one of the strange quirks of human nature to overcomplicate things. This is particularly so when things start to go wrong. In my favourite sport, rugby league—as in most team-based ball sports—the basics of winning a game are possession of the ball and territory. If you can consistently complete your sets in your opponent's half of the field, you will likely win the game. Drop the ball or give away silly penalties by overcomplicating moves, and you'll make it very difficult to win the game. Teams that lack confidence are particularly guilty of these mistakes. Watch any winning team, and you will see they stick to the basics and never panic when they go a try or goal behind. You can see this in any workplace, too. Those people who rarely appear stressed or overwhelmed stick to the basics. They have processes for getting their core work done—the work they are employed to do. Top salespeople dedicate time daily to prospecting and following up with their customers. CEOs ensure they have time for meeting with their leadership team weekly so they are aware of what's going on and know where the potential issues are. So, what can you do to ensure you stick to the basics each day to avoid those pernicious backlogs? Well, before I answer that, let me hand you over to the Mystery Podcast Voice for this week's question. This week's question comes from George. George asks, hi Carl, are there any strategies you know of that guarantees someone will always be on top of their work? Hi George, thank you for your question. I've always found it fascinating to look at occupations where mistakes can lead to a loss of life—airline pilots and surgeons, for example. Before any flight, a pilot goes through a checklist to ensure the plane is in working order. They check the weather and the weight of the cargo—both of which can affect how the aircraft will fly. They calculate the speed they need to reach before taking off and plot their flight path to avoid storms or dangerous weather fronts. No pilot would ever consider not doing these checks. Indeed, not doing them would be an act of gross negligence and could potentially be career-ending. Similarly, surgeons follow a checklist. They check the patient's name, the type of surgery being carried out, and, if necessary, which side they will be operating on. They also check the patient's blood pressure and other measurements. Again, failure to do so would be considered gross negligence, and a doctor could be fired for not doing them. Now, perhaps lives do not depend on you doing your job correctly, but approaching your work in the same way a pilot or surgeon does can ensure that your work gets done without missing essential tasks. The first step is to identify your core work. The work you are employed to do at a micro-level. For example, if you manage a team of people, what do you need to do at a task level to manage your team? That could be to prepare for and hold a weekly team meeting. It may involve setting aside time each month for a thirty-minute one-to-one session with each team member. That would translate into weekly tasks for preparing for the team meeting and scheduling appointments with your team. A journalist's core work may be to research a story and then write the story before the deadline. Imagine their deadline is 1 pm on Thursday; then the journalist could ensure sufficient time is protected before Thursday to get the story written and submitted before the deadline. What are your core work tasks? Next comes the all important communications and admin tasks. We all have them. The problem with these tasks is we cannot accurately estimate how much will come in. Each morning, when I start my day, I have no idea how many emails I will have. Some days, it's 80; other days, it can be as high as 150. Yet, one thing I can guarantee is that I will have email to deal with. So, I protect an hour a day for dealing with communications. This way, I know that no backlogs will ever build, and nobody is waiting longer than 24 hours for my response. Somedays, I need the whole hour; I may only need thirty minutes on other days. Yet I still protect an hour. It's no good “hoping” you will find the time to respond to your communications. You won't find the time, and if you do not have a consistent amount of time to do it, backlogs will soon build. You mentioned strategies, George, and the strategy is ensuring you have enough time protected for the key work you need to do. This may mean you need to cap your meetings each week. Now, I know whenever I mention this, people recoil in fear. Yet, if you work an average of forty hours a week and spend thirty hours in meetings, how will you ever get your work done? How will you prevent backlogs? Let me give you an example how being strategic with your time. I limit my coaching hours to twenty each week. Think of my coaching sessions as meetings. Following each session, I write feedback, which takes an average of twenty minutes to write. I know I can dedicate an hour each day to writing feedback, so my limit is three feedbacks per day. That works out at twenty-one per week. If I allow more than twenty hours for coaching sessions in a week, I will either have to reduce my other work or work longer hours. It would not be sustainable. While the money would be good, my health and effectiveness would suffer. So, it would only be a short-term benefit. I've learned over the years that the only thing you control is what you do in the time you have each day. You cannot control time itself. That is fixed. When you realise that you see that you can only build strategies around what you do, that means getting comfortable saying no. You cannot say no to your boss and your customers, right? Well, yes and no. You see, it comes back to that time issue. Twenty-four hours. That's it. Now, if you are happy using all twenty-four hours running around for your boss and customers, that's fine. But if you accept that, I would suggest you gain some self-respect. I know that might be a bit harsh. But you are a valuable person. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, has the right to demand all twenty-four hours of your time. Sometimes, you do need to say no. You cannot do everything because everything takes time. The question then becomes how much time are you willing to to give to your boss and customers? Let me give you an example. I protect two hours each day doing my focused work. Work that ultimately benefits my clients and customers. I also protect an hour for communications and thirty minutes for admin. In total, I protect three-and-a-half hours a day for meaningful work. If I were working a typical eight-hour day, that means I still have four-and-a-half hours available for my boss, customers and clients. Would four and a half hours be enough for you? The “guarantee” that puts you on top of your work is consistency with your strategy. Over the last few days, I've travelled back to Korea from Ireland. Door to door, it's a thirty-hour trip. We set off at 2:00 am on Sunday from the west coast of Ireland and arrived back at our home around 30 hours later. Between checking in, waiting for flights and flying, I stayed on top of my email and admin. The last thing I wanted when I got back home was a backlog of stuff to do. Then, after some sleep, I went into my office and spent around three hours catching up with everything else. Had I ignored my messages and admin, I could have lost a whole day trying to catch up. No, thank you. I'll take advantage of the downtime when travelling to stay consistent. By the way, a quick tip David Allen (author of Getting Things Done) gave me a few years ago is to block the whole of your first day back to catch up. If it's a short trip, you can get away with half a day, but a whole day is always better. Whatever work you do, there will always be tasks that are core to what you do. Those tasks need to be embedded into your days and weeks as must-do tasks. Must-do tasks are non-negotiable. Because they are non-negotiable, you allow no one—not your boss or customers—to steal that time from you. Offer alternative times and days, but never negotiate on your core work times. That's the only strategy that's ever worked and will be the only one that will work in the future. Whatever industry you look at, the top performers know this and stick to it. It's not just industries either. Top athletes, elite soldiers, and entertainers remain at the top of their field by being consistent with the basics—their core work. So, spend a little time establishing your core work—the micro-level tasks you need to perform to stay on top of your work. Then, protect time for doing that work. Fix it in your calendar, and never ever let anyone steal that time away from you. I hope that helps, George. Thank you for your question, and thank you for listening. It just remains for me now to wish you all a very, very productive New Year.

Rundown - Intro - 00:35 Beth McCann in the Inner Sanctum of Craig's Lawyers' Lounge - 08:07 Troubadour Dave Gunders - 01:25:32 "Some Days" by Dave Gunders - 01:28:04 Outro - 01:33:35 Denver District Attorney Beth McCann makes a historic trip into the Inner Sanctum of Craig's Lawyers' Lounge. She's about to conclude two terms and will be stepping off the public stage, but not without some public expressions, as you will hear. Beth McCann is a trailblazing figure in Denver's legal landscape. She was sworn in as the city's first female District Attorney on January 10, 2017. Her journey to this historic position reflects groundbreaking achievements and a commitment to public service. McCann spent her childhood moving frequently due to her father's career as an Army colonel, including stints in Japan and Taiwan. Inspired by feminist role models, she pursued higher education to establish a career. McCann graduated magna cum laude from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Former President Trump is now stirring up hate against lawful Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, and he's telling lies about Aurora, Colorado. McCann assures us that Denver law enforcement will be ready if Trump comes to our neighboring city of Aurora. Like California AG-Elect Kamala Harris, who was also elected on the first Tuesday of November 2016, Denver DA-Elect Beth McCann felt queasy about our country despite achieving her lifetime pinnacle job. Eight years later, Beth McCann voluntarily surrendered power to her successor, John Walsh (Ep 193), whom she endorsed. McCann's legal journey began at Georgetown University Law School in 1971, where she was one of only a handful of women in her class. After graduating in 1974, she moved to Denver, becoming only the second female law clerk for Colorado's U.S. District Court Judge Sherman G. Finesilver. McCann served as a deputy and then Chief Deputy District Attorney in Denver from 1975 to 1982, prosecuting hundreds of cases. In the early 1990s, McCann became Denver's first female Manager of Safety under Mayor Wellington Webb. For eight years, McCann served as Deputy Attorney General for Civil Litigation and Employment Law for the Colorado Attorney General's Office. McCann was also a four-term elected state representative for HD 8 in Denver, focusing on criminal justice matters and health care reform. McCann has long been a strong advocate for women in the legal profession. She is a founding member and former president of the Colorado Women's Bar Association, and she explains why most of her new hires are female prosecutors. Kamala Harris's virtues as a fellow big-city prosecutor are extolled. Beth and Kamala have inevitably faced specific difficult everyday top prosecutor experiences. We agree that Tim Walz is a fine man and educator. We talk with Denver DA McCann about character and leadership. McCann explains her recent decision no charges will be filed in connection with a deadly shooting in July at an apartment near the University of Denver. https://www.9news.com/article/news/local/du-apartment-intruder-shot-killed/73-a62f1a45-d7ce-49ed-a055-907d65887ed5 According to Denver Police, a resident returned to their apartment inside One Observatory Park around 1 a.m. on July 21 and was startled by an intruder. The apartment building is on East Evans Avenue, just east of South University Boulevard. We discuss how Kamala Harris said she'd shoot any intruder into her family home. Beth McCann explains the burden of proof on prosecutors and how she's made thousands of such decisions. https://people.com/kamala-harris-tells-oprah-intruder-getting-shot-if-try-to-break-in-8716045 Show Troubadour Dave Gunders plays hurt, coming off the recovery table from knee replacement surgery and offering his toe-tapping song "Some Days." Some days this week started off bad for NC Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who had nasty laundry exposed. It could not happen in a better swing state. The host starts the show by decrying Trump's blaming of the Jews in case he does not get elected. Is he talking to Craig? It appears so. What's he going to do about it? Have friends extract retribution? WTF. Kamala continues to be calm and bright. This episode is hopeful.

GET THE BOOK: Daniel: A Strong Man Is Faithful here https://amzn.to/3ToZqOk Do you testify to others about your fiery trial of faith? Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and rose up in haste. He declared to his counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?” They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.” He answered and said, “But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.” Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the burning fiery furnace; he declared, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here!” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out from the fire. And the satraps, the prefects, the governors, and the king's counselors gathered together and saw that the fire had not had any power over the bodies of those men. The hair of their heads was not singed, their cloaks were not harmed, and no smell of fire had come upon them. Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set aside the king's command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God. Therefore I make a decree: Any people, nation, or language that speaks anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins, for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way.” Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the province of Babylon. — Daniel 3:24-30 We live in times ruled by the spirit of Babylon. Satan roams the earth, and men like Nebuchadnezzar still exist. They will till the end of this time. This means we're going to have trouble in this life. We might even have long seasons of fiery trials. We will experience trials on a macro-level in the world, in our countries, with governments, politicians, and leaders. We'll also experience trials on a micro-level in our marriage, family, workplaces, and personal lives. Somedays, the furnace of these trials is going to rage on both levels. Occasionally, the heat is going to get turned way up. But know this — a man of faith always has God standing by their side. God will stand by you through the fire, even when a vengeful spirit walks you to the edge of the furnace and pushes you in. God will not let you be burned. Not a hair on your body. Not a singe of your skin. Not even a smell of flame. But you'll have to have faith that the Spirit of God is greater than the spirit of this world. In fact, I bet you have a story like this—a tale of a test where God intervened for you. This story is a testimony of God's greatness and faithfulness through you. It's worth recalling and retelling because it tells the tale of a faithful God who is ready to save. So do that today. Testify about God by telling the tale of your trial and his salvation. Give some hope to others who are walking through the same test or trial that you did. Because the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego is not the only great story of God's salvation. It's one of many God has done through men just like you. God, use our stories to testify about the great works you do. As we share them, may they testify to your faithfulness and greatness and help others know there is hope in their tests and trials. May our stories of you be salvation to others. In Jesus's name, amen. Ep #280: Somedays, I am surprised I hold it all together. Today is not one of those days. Today, anxiety and inner judgment are running rampant, and rather than act like everything - I think it best to talk it through with y'all. It is okay not to be okay. We all have those days when sobriety isn't enough for today to be the best day. Know you are not alone. You are part of this gigantic Earth experiment we call human-ness. Breathe, reset your Vegas nerve, hug yourself, get on your feet, and move your body - whatever you do, please believe that even the toughest days are there to support your recovery. It's like the parent being hard on you. It may not feel like love at the moment, and it may not be love at all, but there is a lesson there, and when we grasp it, learn it, and integrate it - at least the pain of the day paves the way for better days ahead. There is no such thing as a perfect church. We don't find one in the New Testament, and we can't find one today. A perfect church, this side of heaven, is impossible. But what is possible is a church that you can love.We know this because the apostle Paul loved the church at Philippi — and I don't mean he loved this church in a general or principled way, but this is particular and genuine love. That's clear in these verses right from the start. Now at one level, Paul's introduction in Chapter 1 is pretty standard. Ancient letters always started with some personal reflections and thanksgiving — so that's something we'd expect — but Paul goes above and beyond the normal and he gets deeply personal and openly affectionate. Just listen to his language here. He says:Verse 3: “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you.”Verse 7: “I hold you in my heart” Verse 8: “I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus” Paul really loved this church. That's obvious in what he says, but okay, we might ask: So what? Why does this matter? So the apostle Paul loved a local church in the first century and that's great, but what does that have to do with us?Well, if it's possible for Paul to love a local church, then it's possible for us to love a local church, and we can learn from his example. So here's the question I'm bringing to this passage: Are there lessons we could glean from Saint Paul's love for the church in Philippi that might shape our love for our church in St. Paul? What are some observations of Paul's love for this church that could help us in our love for our church? That's the question I'm asking, and I've got three observations I want to show you but even before we get there, I need to step back for a minute and question the premise: Is it desirable to love the church that you're part of? Is loving your church a good and worthy ambition?Or, I'll put it this way: Should we love our church the way Paul loved this church? And again, we're not talking about general or principled love, but particular, genuine love. Should we love our church like that?I think the answer is Yes. We should aspire to love our church the way Paul loved the church at Philippi. That is a good and worthy ambition, but I could imagine that this is a debatable topic. Why Love the Church? Some might think that the main thing is just being part of a church no matter how you feel about it. “You're part of a church and you put up with it. It's all about commitment!” Others might have a looser idea and think that you don't need to love your church, and you don't even really need to be committed to it, just as long as you're a Christian and you stay out of trouble and you show up every now and then, you're fine. So when I say that it is good and right to love the church that you're part of, am I being too idealistic or too extreme?I'd say neither. Not at all. I think that you should love the church that you're part of — if you're part of this church (our church) you should love our church, for three reasons: Jesus commanded itJesus empowers itThe church is precious1) Jesus commanded it. John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” That applies to our church.2) Jesus empowers it. 1 John 4:7–9, 19 “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.” As John says a few verses later … “We love because he first loved us.” The truth is, we're not ever going to be able to love anybody truly until we understand God's love for us. And that's the Holy Spirit's work in our hearts. Do you know yourself to be loved by God? And that his love is a Never-Stopping, Never-Giving Up, Unbreaking, Always and Forever Love. God's love for us in Christ is the power of our love for one another.3) the church is precious. This is just being practical: we should love our church because the local church is essential to following Jesus in this world, and one day your life in this world is going to be over, and on that day, all that will matter is Jesus, and so who you are following Jesus with now really matters. Track with me here: who you are following Jesus with in this life, one day will be who you followed Jesus with. And that's super important. Our lives together as a church is more precious that we realize, and I believe it's too precious not to love. We should love our church. And Paul can help us with this in Philippians 1, verses 3–8. I want to show you three observations of Paul's love for this church, and then we're gonna turn them into lessons for how we love our church. Here's the first observation. 1) Paul thanked God for this church when he prayed for them. (verses 3–4)We see this in verses 3 and 4. Paul says, “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy.” This is pretty straightforward, but notice two things:First, Paul prayed for this church. Second, Paul thanked God for this church.“Every Prayer of Mine”First, we know that Paul is praying for this church because he says, “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all…” The mention of “prayer” in verse 4 explains what he means by “remembrance” in verse 3. This means that Paul is not just randomly remembering this church and then giving thanks for them. It's not that the church of Philippi just pops in his head and that makes him thankful, but Paul connects the remembering to praying. He remembers the church and he prays for the church. Now, is it the remembering the church that leads to the praying or is it the praying that leads to the remembering? We don't know and that's fine — we just need to see that Paul prayed for this church as a habit: he says “every prayer of mine for you all.” And every time Paul prayed, he thanked God for them. “I Thank My God”This is important. And really, it gets into a larger topic on thanksgiving, and I won't spend a lot of time on this, but I just want to remind you that thanksgiving is a choice. It's not only an involuntary reaction, but thanksgiving is a heart-attitude and its expression is something we choose to do. Thanksgiving is a discipline. That's why, in the Bible Reading Guide, that first little box each day says “Gratitude.” I can't commend to you enough the habit of starting everyday by thanking God — knowing that some days will be harder than others. Somedays all we can come up with is, “Thank you, Father, that I'm here. Thank you for waking me up.” This is a discipline and it's one that shapes us. The more we give thanks, the more thankful we become. We can choose to give thanks. That's what Paul is doing here for this church. Because there are other things that came into his mind when we thought about this church! They had some unity issues. There were some members of this church who were not getting along. This was not a perfect church, but Paul loved this church, and he prayed for this church, and every time he did, he thanked God for them! Of all the things he could have prayed, and a lot of things he probably did pray about as he kept praying, he made a point to thank God. ApplicationSo what's the lesson for us? It's that we do what Paul did. Would you make it a habit to pray for our church and thank God for her?And yeah, there are other things to pray about, and we'll get there, but first, from hearts that are mainly thankful, let's choose to give thanks to God in prayer. Just count the blessings of God to us! Let's be amazed that God has saved us and that he's brought us together to follow Jesus in this life.Let's pray for our church and thank God for her. That's the first observation/lesson.Here's the second. 2) Paul knew this church well enough to be confident of God's work in them. (verses 6–7)This is in verses 6 and 7, and verse 6 is a verse you've probably heard before. I love this verse and this is a favorite verse for a lot of Christians because it highlights God's faithfulness in our perseverance. That's the theology behind this verse. God will lead us all the way home. He will complete what he started. Pretty much every time Philippians 1:6 is quoted, it's to support that truth, and amen, but notice the context of verse 6.Paul loves this church, he prays for this church, he thanks God for this church; they've got a long history of partnership in the gospel, and then he starts verse 6 with, “I'm sure of this” or more literally, “I have been convinced of this… that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”This is an amazing statement. Paul is saying, I have become personally convinced that one day you are going to stand before Jesus in a glorified body. This kind of statement cannot be said about everyone. Paul does not say this about everyone, so then how can he say it about the church in Philippi?Well, it's because he knows this church well enough to know that their faith is real. That's what he says in verse 7.“Because I Hold You in My Heart”Verse 7 is meant to explain verse 6. It's like Paul knows that what he says in verse 6 is bold. It's a radical statement. This would have turned some heads. So in verse 7 he explains, “It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart.” That's Paul's argument?!He has just said that he's sure that this church, the individuals of this church, are going to persevere. God will save them completely. They are going to see Jesus one day — and his rationale for that confidence is: I've got you right here in the heart! That's not exactly an airtight theological argument. I don't know if that would pass in my kids' logic class.See, Paul isn't making an argument here, he's being personal. He is appealing to his relationship. He has this church in his heart, which means, he has a close-up, knows-them-by-name relationship, and in that relationship, through their partnership in the gospel, he has gotten to know them well enough to see that they're the real deal. He's seen their lives. He's seen where they came from. He's seen what they've been through. Paul knows this church well enough to be confident of God's work in them, and he tells them. So what's the lesson for us?ApplicationAs an aspiration, we want to be a church that is known well enough by one another such that we can say to one another with confidence, You're gonna make it. That's like the point of covenant membership! We want to be that kind of church. So here's the application: get to know one another for this purpose. Cities Church, get to know other members of this church well enough that you can say to them, You're going to see Jesus one day.Know others well enough so that you can say that, and then say it. And I realize that no one of us is going to know well every single member of this church — that's not expected — but we all can know and be known by some, and if each one of us is doing that for some, then everyone will know and be known. That make sense? That's why we have groups.Paul knew the church at Philippi well enough to be confident of God's work in them and he told them. Let's do the same at our church. Third observation:3) Paul partnered with this church for the sake of the gospel. (verses 5, 7–8)Now, the thing that's behind Paul's love for this church (and his joy in them, and how he knows them, and why he's confident of God's work in them) all comes back to their partnership in the gospel. Paul mentions this first in verse 3 (it's the ground for why he prays for them with joy). He mentions it again in verse 7 to explain how he knows them so well. And the word he uses for “partnership” is the New Testament word that most times is translated as “fellowship.” He says in verse 7 “you are all partakers with me of grace.” This is an edifying participation, a fellowship. So when we see the phrase in verse 3, “partnership in the gospel,” we should think: fellowship in the gospel. That's what he's saying. And I think it's important to keep “fellowship” in mind because it guards us against two mistaken mindsets in gospel partnerships, a functional mindset and an idle mindset. We don't want either of those. The functional mindset is one that is utilitarian. The main concern is not the quality or the nature of the partnership, but it's all about the bottom line. Are we seeing results? Is it effective? Are you hitting your numbers? That's your work environment, right? Sometimes at work you get stuck with co-workers who maybe are not your favorite, but you just gotta soldier through and get it done. We see this sometimes in professional sports. There's a team that has an inter-conflict, they don't really get along, but they have to lay the conflict aside and do their job, because they're paid to perform and to win. It's all about the bottom line.Well, that's not what is going on here between Paul and the church at Philippi. This is not a mechanical, utilitarian partnership, but it's a true fellowship. There's mutual love. This is a friendship in the gospel. And the “in the gospel” part is what guards us against the other mistaken mindset, which is an idle mindset. See, Paul doesn't just say: Hey, we have fellowship. It's good to have fellowship. I'm glad we have fellowship. Isn't fellowship great? No, that's not what this is. This is fellowship on mission. They love each other, and that's great. They probably love to be together, and that's great. But they're not just hanging out, they're trying to change the world. They are pulling together their resources and their energies for the sake of the gospel, and it cost them. This was not an easy, picturesque partnership where everything they touch turned to gold. No! Paul is in prison when he writes this letter! Epaphroditus almost died going back and forth for Paul and this church! This fellowship that they had was in the trenches of gospel witness and gospel advance that all Hell tried to stop. They were friends who remained friends through the ups and downs of costly action.See, fellowship in the gospel is active enough fellowship to see real gospel advance and it's sincere enough fellowship to stick together when things go badly … even when it's inconvenient, when it hurts, when there's imprisonment. This is an incredible partnership. I want this for us!ApplicationFellowship in the gospel means we're giving ourselves to something bigger than ourselves and we're giving ourselves together as friends. There's an old D. L. Moody quote when he said something like “The world has yet to see what God will do with a man fully consecrated to him.” And I just want to borrow that quote and basically change everything about it, but I want to say: Oh, that the Twin Cities would see God at work in a church that has true fellowship in the gospel! — a church that loves one another and a church that is serious about Jesus getting all the glory whatever it takes. It's not idealistic to want that for our church, or to believe that we could have it. We can. God can do it.We're never going to be a perfect church — that's impossible this side of heaven — but we can be a church that loves one another for the sake of the gospel, and Paul can help us. Three lessons to take with us:Pray for our church and give thanks to God for her.Know others in this church well enough to be confident of God's work in them.Let's have true fellowship in the gospel.Let's go wide-open in spending our lives and in being spent for the sake of the gospel overcoming these Twin Cities and beyond. We want Jesus in all of his glory and love and joy to be impossible to ignore. That's what brings us to the Table. The TableMost of this sermon has been all observation and application (Paul did this, we can too) — but where's the gospel? It comes back to the truth that we love because God first loved us. And he has proven his love for us in that, while we were still sinners, Jesus Christ died for us. Far be it from us to boast except in the cross of Jesus Christ our Lord! His death for us is everything. And that's what we remember at this Table. To this we hold, our hope is only JesusFor our lives are wholly bound to His If that's your confession, if you have put your faith in Jesus Christ, we invite you to eat and drink with us this morning.

Hi folks! As part of our collaboration with Penny Fractions, we are bringing you the first episode of a new format—David, Saxon, and Sam, thinking through our moment in an off-the-cuff convo about current events. We hope you like it! The music industry was recently shaken by news around beloved marketplace/web-magazine Bandcamp, where half of the staff was recently let go (or, as press release from definitely-not-shady new owners Songtradr put it "After a comprehensive evaluation...50% of Bandcamp employees have accepted offers to join Songtradr”). It's…not great. Unfortunately, it's also not entirely unexpected. To try to get our heads around what's happening, we talk union-busting, the decline of music criticism, the death of tech optimism, the rise of the influencer economy, the zombie-like survival of grifting, and what the future might hold for a synch-happy tech-bro Bandcamp. Somedays, it feels like it's their world, and we just live in it. Today might be one of those days. Subscribe to our newsletter! Follow us on Twitter! Subscribe to Penny Fractions!
Persistency and Continuity Lead to Success Trying something new, or being thrust into a new situation, can be tricky, difficult, frustrating, and downright terrifying. As an amputee, I can truly understand and appreciate that. However, with the right mindset, the setting of goals, and the willingness to be persistent, even when experiencing failure, we can master what we want to achieve. Overcoming setbacks through persistence and continuity is a powerful journey of resilience and determination. When faced with challenges, those who are persistent continue to pursue their goals despite obstacles. You will possess the tenacity to endure failures and setbacks, learning from each experience and using it as a stepping stone rather than a stumbling block. Setbacks, in an amputee's journey, are common as we relearn to walk, build muscle and stability, all while our limb changes and fitting of prosthetics is a challenge. Hiking 2 miles of Awa'awapuhi Trail near Waimea Canyons With the mindset of succeeding despite the hurdles, being persistent in reaching your goals is vitally important, as is being consistent. Continuity involves maintaining a steadfast commitment to your objectives, even in the face of adversity, and there will be adversity. Somedays, as an amputee, it will feel like it is always about adversity and the roadblocks trying to take you down will feel like stone walls. However, through continuity, you will develop a sense of discipline, enabling you to stay focused on your aspirations and making gradual progress. Kayaking Hanalei for 3 hours Combining persistence and continuity empowers you to navigate through setbacks with unwavering determination. you learn to adapt, improvise, and keep moving forward, ultimately transforming setbacks into opportunities for growth. This approach not only builds character but also fosters a resilient mindset, enabling you to achieve your goals despite the challenges you will face along the way. When you see an amputee who is running a race, surfing the waves, hiking huge miles and high elevation, or happily moving about their day remember, they started with baby steps. They fell down a time or two. They spent hours, days, weeks, and even years practicing what they have achieved. Everyone starts a new task as a beginner, learning from mistakes, and failures. It is those who continue to pick themselves up time and time again, and press forward with conviction who eventually find their way to success. Success takes time, commitment, practice, and determination, despite setbacks. You can find success, too, just don't give up when things get hard. You'll be so proud of yourself in the end. Fun snorkeling days on Kauai Today figure out what you want to achieve. It's ok to dream big, but pick the first thing you really want to accomplish, with where you are right now. Write that goal down! Next, write down a deadline to achieve that goal. Finally, list steps you will need two take each day to reach that goal by your deadline. Now go out and work for what you want! Remember, falls and failures happen, and can be great stepping stones for success. And also know that it's not uncommon to be heading the right direction and then hit a setback. You know the old saying, "two steps forward, one step back", right? Just prepare yourself for that so you don't get discouraged. Stay the course! Don't give up. You deserve to be happy, and living your best life. Until next week, and as always, Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be You!!

Exodus 10-12 details the last three plagues of the ten plagues that fell upon Egypt because Pharaoh hardened his heart and refused to let the people of God go. Locusts infesting the entire land and devouring whatever food was left after the hail, total darkness that lasted for three days and could be “felt,” the 10th and final plague of the death of all the firstborns in Egypt… through all of this, we have a front row seat to see the power and authority of God over all of creation. Then, in the middle of the night, an estimated 2-3 MILLION PEOPLE left Egypt together on foot… AND SO THE EXODUS BEGAN. (Can you even imagine what that looked like? The magnitude of this exodus? How long that took? Somedays trying to get just 7 people out the door of our home feels nearly impossible! LOL!) Oh, my OOBTers… Hopefully, you are beginning to see this truth played out through each and every one of these plagues up to now…. God's intent in the Exodus story is certainly to show Pharaoh and Egypt who the One true God is, but it is also to write on the hearts of His own people, the Israelites, that He is a faithful and trustworthy Deliverer without whose help no rescue was possible. Our God is a Deliverer + Rescuer. So beautiful. Be sure to listen in to hear about all of this and so much more! For the full episode show notes, please go to https://mfahring.com/exodus-10-12/

Episode 437 – Inner Conflict Today we have Mark who is 45 from Connecticut and took his last drank on January 15, 2023. Thank you to all of the Café RE chat hosts. You all do a great job! We have partnered with Sober Link. You can find some tips and can sign up for a $50 off promo code. [01:55] Highlights from Paul: It is impossible to avoid conflict in a human life. All attempts to avoid it, will only result in more conflict. It built into the human experience. After all, we are reconciling the Yin to our Yang on a daily basis. Somedays the dark side says take a seat, and the next day, we welcome the light. Addictions take hold when is there is intense inner conflict. When parts of our personalities are out of balance. Or when parts of us are screaming for attention because we are in pain. In addition, this inner imbalance is a representation that the whole of society is out of balance causing many of us to question “what the hell is going on?”. Your individual unrest is not separate from the whole. And how do we solve the “what the hell is going on” question? We do the inner work. We face this inner conflict. We learn from it. We recognize what the addiction is trying to force us to do. He is married and has two dogs and a cat. He works in marketing and customer experience. For fun Mark loves to hike, ski and garden. Alcohol has been part of Mark's life for as long as he can remember. At a very young age his dad gave him a sip of his beer and Mark liked it. Mark didn't drink much until his senior year of high school when he came out as gay. He and his brother would go to the local bar on the weekends in an effort to connect with others like them. Mark's drinking progressed throughout college, but he had the “work hard, play hard” mentality and tried to limit his drinking to the weekends while being productive during the week. This continued through the beginning of his career. At many of his work events, it was seen as abnormal to drink more than two drinks. Mark found himself always wanting to leave these events in order to go find more alcohol. Later at another job the culture was different where everyone drank like Mark wanted to. Alcohol was always present in his day-to-day life, so he didn't need to hide it. The consequences of Mark's drinking started to impact his life. He was drinking daily and even more on the weekends and vacations. He became fearful as he had more experiences of blacking out. Mark feels that the fear came from not being comfortable with himself. After being able to stack some sober days, he realized the fear came from self-loathing. As he started evaluating how he ended up drinking so much he realized he had become a people pleaser but drinking made it harder and harder to live up to expectations. He started feeling shame around his drinking. Mark started his journey by trying Dry January, listening to podcasts and reading books. Mark found himself in a cycle of gaining some sobriety time and then getting derailed. He reached the point where he didn't enjoy drinking anymore. Mark sought out a therapist who helped him recognize that he was doing it alone and pushed Mark to attend AA and find community. He struggled to connect with AA and decided to try Café RE. Once Mark realized that this couldn't be done alone, he was able to push his fear aside and explore recovery with a community. Mark's plan in sobriety moving forward: to continue making connections, making sobriety a priority every day. Mark's parting piece of guidance: don't give up and be willing to try everything. It will be scary but it's worth it. A podcast to answer all your questions about productivity, time management, self-development and goal planning. My name is Carl Pullein and I am your host for this show. An area I find most people struggle with is breaking bigger tasks down into manageable chunks. How do you determine something like “write report on Quarter 1 Marketing campaign” when you may not know where to start? While it might be clear what needs to be done, it may not be clear how long something like this would take. In many ways this comes about because we are not prioritising correctly. If your number one task for the day is to complete a report, or write a paper for your professor, why would an email or message become more important. You have no idea what or how many emails and messages you will get each day, you only know you will get some, but email and messages can never be your priority for the day. They don't move things forward for you. They might help other people, but if your number one priority is the report, why change your plan? Anyway, before we go any further, let me hand you over to the Mystery Podcast voice for this week's question. This week's question comes from Meghan. Meghan asks, Hi Carl, thank you for your recent podcasts on core work. One area I struggle with is knowing how long a task will take. Should I be allocating time for each task or just doing what I can. Additionally, how would a Ph.D student define their core work? Thank you Meghan for your question. Let me begin with the second part of your question first. What is the core work of a Ph.D student? This is going to relate to your chosen topic. What are you studying? The vast majority of your work here is going to be researching, taking notes and perhaps conducting studies. This is primarily likely to involve a lot of reading. So how much reading do you feel you need to do each week? This needs time allocating to and that's where you calendar comes in. Let's imagine you want to spend four hours a day reading. How will you break that down? If you were an early bird—someone who likes to start their day early, you may choose 6am to 8am as your reading time. You could then perhaps set aside a further two hours later in the afternoon. That would still leave you with plenty of time for dealing with communications, socialising and meeting with your professor. If you are not an early bird and prefer doing your reading later in the day you can schedule it for late evening, Working on any studies you are conducting or papers you are writing should also be scheduled in your calendar. With these two activities your calendar will tell you your writing and reading blocks and that's all they say. You task manager and notes will indicate what you will read or write. Now, onto establishing how long a task should take you. That's going to be very different most of the time. However, it's not really about how long you should spend doing a task, it's more about how much time you have available to spend on that task. Let me give you a personal example from this podcast. It takes me around two hours to write the script for this podcast. Some days I can write it faster, other days I may need more time. Every Tuesday morning, I have a two hour writing block in my calendar and for the most part I can get this script written. However, this week, I was only able to schedule an hour on Tuesday morning, which meant the script was only half done. I then needed to find another hour later in the week to finish it off. When looking at my calendar, I discovered that the only time I had available was Saturday evening. Now that raises a question. Do I use time I generally protect for other things, or do I allocate an hour to writing the script? Well, as I need to record and publish the podcast on Sunday afternoon and Sunday morning I have a lot of meetings, the only time I had was Saturday. The decision was made. I could of course have decided not to publish a podcast this week, but I see this podcast as part of my core work and therefore non-negotiable. So, the decision was easy, block an hour off on Saturday evening. The truth is that doesn't happen very often, so it's not like I have to regularly write this script in my rest time, but if it must be done, it must be done. Now, for the first part of your question, Meghan. How do you determine how long a task will take? For most of you a lot of what you do will be predictable. A simple example, would be doing a weekly grocery shop. I know, for instance, I need an hour for this. Similarly, taking my dog for a walk will be an hour. You will also find a lot of the work you do is part of a process. If you were a graphic designer, perhaps much of your work would be sending concepts and ideas to your clients and awaiting their approval. If you been designing for a long time you will likely know how long a piece of work will take. I know, for instance, I need an hour to write my weekly blog post. It's not an exact science, some days I can write it in forty minutes, other days I need ninety minutes. On average, though, it takes around an hour. I watched an interesting talk by Jeffrey Archer. Jeffrey Archer is a prolific author having written over forty books in the last forty years. He has an interesting schedule for doing his work. He will wake up at 5:30am, and begin writing at 6AM. He writes for two hours (by hand, not keyboard) and then take a two hour break. Then from 10am to 12pm he will write some more before taking another two hour break. He will do another two hour session from 2 til 4 and finally between 6pm and 8pm he will read through what he had written for that day. The interesting thing here is he is not counting the amount of words he writes. That depends on the flow. Somedays he will write a lot, other days it will be a struggle. The key for him is he follows the process each day. He knows, after forty books, it will take him around 1,000 hours to write a book and see it on the bookshelves. I know after nearly 800 blog posts that a blog post from first draft to publication takes two hours. Notice that Jeffrey Archer gets six hours of writing in each day and has plenty of time in the breaks to make phone calls, write emails and deal with other administration tasks. He's focused on the 1,000 hours over six months, not worrying about how many words he will write each day. So, what about you, if you have a task to do when does it need to be finished by? Imagine you have a task to do and you need to deliver it by the end of the week. The best day to start is today. First task, look at what needs to be done. Do you need to do some research? If so, how much time can you dedicate to the research? Perhaps you can only do two hours. That's fine, block research time off in your calendar. How much time will you need to prepare the finished task? If its a written piece or a presentation, how long do you need? If you leave that to Thursday, you are going to find yourself in trouble. My advice is to start writing it no later than Wednesday. It's likely you will only know how much time you need when you begin the work. I find if I am designing a workshop for a company, I only know how long it will take once I develop the outline. Once I have that I can anticipate how much time I need. There's always going to be something in the work you do that will give you an indication how long something will take. Let's imagine you have a difficult customer. When you first learn of the problem, you will have no idea how long you will need to resolve the problem. You will not know that, until you speak to the customer. So, speak with the customer at the earliest opportunity. From that conversation, you will now have some idea about what needs to be done and how long it will take. If you delay having that conversation, all you will be doing is guessing. And, worse, your brain will be warning you that you need a lot of time. It's likely you won't need a lot of time, but our brain is not logical, it panics until you can give it something solid to work with. So, make the call or open your notes and make a decision on what you will do first and when you will do it. However, the only way you will learn how long something will take is to develop a process for doing your work. It's through processes that you will learn how long something will take. When I was teaching English, I used to do seminars for companies in different aspects of English communication. The first time I put together a seminar, I didn't know how long it would take. The first one took me around twenty hours, the second and subsequent ones took on average sixteen. Once I knew that, I could plan out my preparation time and refine things. I also focused on the process for building the seminar, so I was able to break down the components parts and make those more streamlined and gave me a better understanding how long each part would take. It also taught me I needed a minimum of two weeks to prepare the seminar. It was possible to do it in a week, but that would mean working longer hours than I wanted to. I ended up with a process that took sixteen hours spread out over two weeks. And that's what I would suggest you do with the work you are doing. Track what you do, how long each part takes and look for ways to naturally break it down. You an then use your calendar to spread out the different parts so they get done. There will always be someone better than you. Technology is constantly being changed and upgraded. Records are being broken. You are an inviddual-- you can only compare yourself to yourself. Today on the show I have the pleasure of speaking with Lux Perry. Lux Perry is the Co-founder of somedays and if you aren't familiar with the brand, I really recommend you check them out. somedays provides natural period pain relief products that are backed by science. Their mission is to de-normalise period pain and to empower people to transform their relationship to pain and take control of their body. Lux lived with unexplained chronic pain and horrific periods since they were nine years old, and like many of us, spent years and years being dismissed. Their experience with pain, their endo diagnosis and their personal journey with their body, led them to co-found somedays with Cassandra Naud and Annabelle Price back in 2021, and they've been lighting the period care world on fire ever since! In this episode Lux and I are talking about one of my favourite topics that I don't usually get to share here – running a business with a chronic illness. We discuss: Lux's story and their motivation behind somedays. The challenges and benefits of starting a business with endometriosis and how they navigated these in the early days of the start-up. The everyday running of a business with a chronic illness, and how the team work together to create an inclusive community and work ethos that allows for not just flexibility but thriving. How their products work and the science behind them. Their viral campaign and the reaction they've received from the world in response to their mission to de-normalise period pain. Romans 7 tells us a lot about our decisions to be followers of Jesus. What we learn quickly is that it is a journey, not a destination. We will have moments of ups and downs. Somedays we will be salt and light, and other days we will slip back into our sinful ways. Our Enemy and the world will call us hypocrites, but our Heavenly Father will call us a beautiful disaster and loved. The journey is a painful one, but worth the fight. Lux Perry is the founder and CEO of somedays, a company focused on period pain relief. Period pain impacted every aspect of Lux's life from school and work to infertility and mental health. After 15 years of being dismissed by doctors Lux was finally diagnosed with endometriosis — one of the most painful diseases in the world and a leading cause of infertility that affects 1 in 10 women. Frustrated with the lack of resources and options available, Lux launched somedays in 2021 in Vancouver. Two years later and somedays is changing the way people manage period pain and has reached over 2.6 billion people with their viral activations to raise awareness for endometriosis and period pain.Lux discusses the importance of finding the right sales and marketing strategy for your specific brand identity and the will to be committed to your business no matter who is telling you no. As she states," you have to believe in yourself to keep you going one day at a time."

Somedays for an underlying are dull and almost entirely flat. On more interesting days, sometimes there is a tear up or down and sometimes all the ups and downs mostly cancel out. How do these different kinds of days affect our option positions? Today, Tom and Tony check the data to see how days with a high intraday range relative to total price change compare to those with less two sided action.
