We had a nostalgic session with Phil Wang of Wong Fu Productions and Bopomofo Cafe. Phil shares his honest take of what it was like to create viral Youtube videos in the early 2000s, and what Wong Fu has evolved to since. We also go in depth about Bopomofo, his personal dream of creating a space where the community could gather over ABC inspired food and drinks. Mapo tofu tater tots, anyone? Be sure to check out Wong Fu's latest videos on YouTube, or stop by Bopomofo the next time you're in California. March was a looong year, right? How are you all hanging in there? Well, we are still in the thick of COVID-19 and responding to it in a lot of different ways as the day-months progress. In this episode, Minji gets to sit down for a virtual check-in conversation with her talented and thoughtful friend, filmmaker Wes Chan from Wong Fu Productions. As they provide support for one another (and everyone listening!) they share perspectives on lifestyle adjustments, realizations, and the silver linings in this difficult moment for humanity. Wes shares an unexpectedly savage clapback moment to the powers that be, and they get real on healthy distractions and how to stay connected or even build connections more intentionally while staying in safe isolation. You know what I mean, its crazy to think that I am an older person, like when I think back, like I still feel very youthful and stuff ya know, but I do ya know, what you were saying earlier I have been thru a ton so like what I really wanna do is just share that with people and let them know that like they're not alone in that, whether it is like losing a parent, being the man of the house, or being an independent entrepreneur or whatever you know all these little things you know I think we all---that’s part of my purpose so I feel like I'm gonna be able to do that for the rest of my life so I feel like I'm still meant to live on this earth. So whether I discover new things or not in different musical ways or whatever so… Balance between quality and consistency 54:07 Consistency wins on any platform because that platform whether its YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter…they want you to be on that app forever, and they want your users to stay on that app. So like the algorithms will work in a way where they see you being consistent they're gonna put your video at the top of the search results they're gonna make it more relevant to the users who are watching you, you know what I mean -- its all about the attention rate too, so they can see, you can see yourself, if you look on your YouTube channel, how long people are watching and stuff matters. So what I learned with all these videos, even the light on a certain part of my face and us taking an hour to figure out the lights doesn't matter to some people. You know what I mean, I learned little things that, where its like people just want to see content, but then there were those projects where I was like I really do care about the lights about the way the light goes on this because this is a track that I recorded that is a cover that means a lot to me… 55:29 The pull between quality and consistency, that when I realized its always going to be there, and you have to pick and choose your battles. You know what I mean and its like, care about the videos you want to care about, you know what I mean, cuz some of the ones that and even some of the ones you don't care about are the ones that are gonna go viral. Like the one that got the most hits in that month was this video where we lost the footage of 2 other angles. And were all like ah shit all we have is this diagonal footage lets just put it out anyways. And we put it out, 6 million views! NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio has been advocating for the scrapping of the SHSAT, which determines admission to the city's top public schools like Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Tech, and Bronx Science. How much of this is fear and resentment of an Asian takeover? Can the rise of Asian politicians, such as in California, strengthen our community? Teen, Oxford, and Mark discuss this contentious topic, along with the trailer for the new Wong Fu series “Yappie” and bad Asian baby names.
