We had a nostalgic session with Phil Wang of Wong Fu Productions and Bopomofo Cafe. Phil shares his honest take of what it was like to create viral Youtube videos in the early 2000s, and what Wong Fu has evolved to since. We also go in depth about Bopomofo, his personal dream of creating a space where the community could gather over ABC inspired food and drinks. Mapo tofu tater tots, anyone? Be sure to check out Wong Fu's latest videos on YouTube, or stop by Bopomofo the next time you're in California. One of the most difficult life transitions someone can go through is letting go of a relationship and going through the process of a divorce. It's a deeply personal journey, so we are extremely grateful that our dear friend Cathy Nguyen is joining us today to share how her experience with divorce has given her a new perspective on motherhood and self-love. Cathy has been on the ABG podcast before, but you may also recognize her from Wong Fu Productions' “Strangers, Again” and “Strangers Never Again” series, or her social content featuring her incredible relationship with her daughter, Isla. __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Coffee Meets Bagel: Download Coffee Meets Bagel, the dating app for serious daters here • Honey: Try PayPal Honey for free at JoinHoney.com/ABG __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. In the face of pervasive racism and stereotyping, particularly in recent years, it's important for all minority communities to stand together in solidarity. On today's episode, we've invited Janine Oda and Ryan Alexander Holmes to sit with us and discuss their experiences growing up Black and Asian. How did their mixed families, and the way that society viewed them, affect their personal cultural identities? Janine is an actress, who you may recognize from Wong Fu Productions' Yappie, Everything Before Us, or Traif: An Unkosher Series. Ryan is an actor and content creator who uses his story and voice to encourage others of mixed ethnic/cultural backgrounds to fully embrace who they are. You may have seen his bilingual skits on TikTok, or his roles in The Morning Show and Dear White People. __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng and Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Stitch Fix: Get $20 off your first purchase at stitchfix.com/abg __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. When the Hart-Celler Act passed in 1965, opening up U.S. immigration to non-Europeans, it ushered in a whole new era. But even to the first generation of Asian Americans born in the U.S. after that milestone, it would have been impossible to imagine that sushi and boba would one day be beloved by all, that a Korean boy band named BTS would be the biggest musical act in the world, that one of the most acclaimed and popular movies of 2018 would be Crazy Rich Asians, or that we would have an Asian American Vice President. Not to mention the creators, performers, entrepreneurs, and influencers making it all happen, both behind the scenes and on the screen. And then there are the activists and representatives who continue to fight for equity, building coalitions and defiantly holding space for Asian American voices and concerns. And still: Asian America is just getting started. Authors Jeff Yang, Phil Yu, and Philip Wang offered a love letter to and for Asian Americans in RISE — a scrapbook of voices, emotions, and memories from an era in which Asian American culture was forged and transformed. On an intimate, humorous tour through the pop-cultural touchstones and sociopolitical shifts of the past 30-plus years, Yang, Yu, and Wang chronicled how we arrived at today's unprecedented diversity of Asian American cultural representation. From a step-by-step guide to a night out in K-Town to a handy “Appreciation or Appropriation?” flowchart, they celebrated the path from the past to the present through nostalgia and shared experiences. Jeff Yang has been observing, exploring, and writing about the Asian American community for over thirty years. He launched one of the first Asian American national magazines, A. Magazine, in the late '90s and early 2000s, and now writes frequently for CNN, Quartz, Slate, and elsewhere. He has written/edited three books — New York Times-best-selling memoir, I Am Jackie Chan: My Life in Action; Once Upon a Time in China, a history of the cinemas of Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Mainland; and Eastern Standard Time: A Guide to Asian Influence on American Culture. Phil Yu is the founder and editor of the popular Asian American news and culture blog, Angry Asian Man, which has had a devoted following since 2001. His commentary has been featured and quoted in The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, and elsewhere. Philip Wang is the co-founder of the hugely influential production company Wong Fu Productions. Since the mid-2000s, his creative work has garnered over 3 million subscribers and half a billion views online, as well as recognition from NPR and CNN for its impact on Asian American representation. And still: Asian America is just getting started. Join us for a special program featuring the talented authors of Rise: A Pop History of Asian America from the Nineties to Now. The timing is great for this intimate, eye-opening and frequently hilarious guided tour through the pop-cultural touchstones and sociopolitical shifts of the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and beyond. Jeff Yang, Phil Yu and Philip Wang chronicle how we arrived at today's unprecedented diversity of Asian American cultural representation through engaging, interactive infographics (including a step-by-step guide to a night out in K-Town, an atlas that unearths historic Asian American landmarks, a handy “Appreciation or Appropriation?” flowchart, and visual celebrations of both our "founding fathers and mothers" and the nostalgia-inducing personalities of each decade), plus illustrations and graphic essays from major AAPI artists, exclusive roundtables with Asian American cultural icons, and more, anchored by extended insider narratives of each decade by the three co-authors. They provide an informative, lively and inclusive celebration of shared experiences and singular moments, and all the different ways in which we have chosen to come together. For this episode I present to you 2 guests for the price of 1, a true 2 for 1 special! They are the embodiment of the word BROMANCE and my dear friends, Tay "The Bae" Chan and Mike "The Show" Bow. Taylor is the director and writer (the everything) at Wong Fu Productions and Mike is an actor (you can catch him on CW's Kung Fu), content creator, and the easter egg in much of Taylor's work. It only makes perfect sense as Taylor directed the hit series "Dating After College" for WFP and with Mike Bow acting in it that we team up to talk about the topic of dating for the modern Asian guy. Much has been said and discussed around the question "Is dating more challenging for Asian guys?". In this conversation we talk about this very real issue and through shared personal experience and stories developed tips and tricks to shift one's mindset to tackle dating in a more healthy way. The dating world is a jungle so join us with our machete's to get through it together. For my first guest of season 2, I could not have brought anybody better on than my very, very, and I mean VERY good friend Ashley Matsunami (@ashmats). From way back when we met at San Diego Comic Con selling Awkward Animal plushes to her time working at Wong Fu Productions and now fittingly with her marvelous self working at Marvel, we've had a lot of discussions on "why men are so difficult?!" over the years. Now, I somehow convinced her to record a conversation about that on this podcast. We talk about her relationship with Papa Matsunami, big brother Matsunami, and her boyfriend Mr. Billz. All amazing formative men in her life. Hope you enjoy this fun chat! Romantic relationships are one of the most challenging types of relationships to navigate. And while some connections hold strong and end in a beautiful lifetime together, many fizzle out. In episode 85, we each wrote a letter to our exes. It was the first time we got that open and vulnerable with one of our past relationships on this podcast! And so many of you enjoyed hearing our letters, especially the idea that opening old wounds and memories can actually be a healing process, if approached with gratitude in mind. In this episode, Janet takes it one step further and has a conversation with an ex. His name is Wesley Chan (we call him Wes), and their relationship was a meaningful one, though short-lived. He is also one of the co-founders of WongFu Productions, and a good friend of ours. This will also be the first time they reflect back on their college relationship together, the first time, in 17 years! That’s all we’ll say for now -- but we hope you enjoy this chat between two good friends, once lovers. Philip Wang feels like he’s graduating into the next phase of his life, and it’s easy to agree with him. Along with his team at Wong Fu Productions, Philip built a YouTube channel with a fanbase of over 3 million people. Also - within the past year, he realized his dreams of opening a restaurant (bopomofo cafe), AND proposing to his girlfriend Helen. It all seems perfect, but, of course, it took a TON of inner work to get here. As you’ll see, Philip still feels impatient for what he can see is a future of opportunity - not just for him, but for the entire Asian American community. Heading one of Malaysia's underrated streetwear labels, idle/idō™ co-founder ZZ Liu talks about the struggle for people to accept his brand in Malaysia and overseas, his relationship with Wesley from Wong Fu Productions, and why slapping a logo on a t-shirt is overrated.
What is a "Yappie"? Some would say it's the epitome of the model minority myth. Others would argue there's nothing wrong with it. In today's episode, we'll explore the definition and effects of a "yappie" life with a special guest who has created an entire mini-series around this concept. His name is Philip Wang. He is a writer, director, actor, and he has been running a lil ol’ YouTube channel called Wong Fu Productions, even before the beginning of YouTube! For someone who stumbled deep into ‘the industry’ through his work, Philip has since voluntarily used his platform to push the Asian American agenda forward through his shorts, his social, his outreach, his mentorship, and many other initiatives that have created a wave for positive community change. Moreover, he has spent many nights single handedly guiding the ABG ladies through the ups and downs of editing and producing a podcast, and he is the crux and biggest supporter of what you are hearing today. We hope you enjoy this episode and this ABB as much as we do. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/message
Today in the pod, we have a pioneer in the game. James “Prohgress” Roh @prohfm of @fareastmovement has been putting it down in the music industry for years. From grinding it hard in their early years to getting signed to Interscope Records. Taking the leap to starting their own label and management company @transparentfeed, Proh talks about everything from the highest of successes to the tough lessons of life in the industry as well as building and maintaining a business with some of his closest friends. His transparency and wisdom from just being a seasoned vet is simply enlightening and absolutely golden. SHOWNOTES: Early in the interview Proh mentions the cow skull music cover. I won't link to it here but you should search: Black Crowes - Amorica Explicit warning haha. The track that made it onto the Tokyo Drift Soundtrack is called Round Round. Round Round. Recap to IdentityLA 2018. You might see your friendly neighborhood dance crew at 00:48: IdentityLA Recap 2018 There was a quick mention of Wong Fu Productions and their new show "Yappie" Wong Fu Production's Yappie Ep 2: "Bad Asian" You might see you're friendly neighborhood dance studio (winky smiley face) Something that blew my mind was when Proh talked about how Bruno Mars threw them Girls on the Dance Floor. G6 and Girls on the Dance Floor were major hits in the era. Girls on the Dance Floor Like a G6 I couldn't get the direct link to the Dash Radio channel but its called, Identity Asia. Heres the link to the Facebook Page. 1:11:00 James answered Ben's question regarding what he would have done differently: If I were to do it again, I would take the big money shows, I would invest in myself, I would only do my own tours, not do support slots and stay home, work more on my own music and be able to have my own life. I woulda done that. This is interesting because its so relatable to anything. INVEST IN YOURSELF. Work on yourself and be better and live the life you want to live. I'm a little reluctant to share this one but we talk about Will Smith A LOT on the PodKast and its only fair we link to the show in Croatia where he performed the 128. Get Lit I'll let you decide. at 1:22 you can see FM get down with Snoop! Doggumentary Tour in Malta GOLDEN RULE AT 1:28:00 "Accept your flaws. Once you know more about yourself and your own limitations and you understand other people and you understand that they're flawed and that everybody makes mistakes. Once you have that I think there is a lot more peace in you, you know cuz you can't be perfect and just knowing that you're gonna make mistakes, you're friends are gonna make mistakes and that’s just the way it is. Tim and Dave hop aboard the Obamabus for a wiiild trip through the biggest news of the week! Donald Trump's MASTER NEGOTIATION skills got the American Taxpayers a 24 million dollar refrigerator. This week for H*28, Chuks and Kari are joined by ragstoreverie to discuss Asian-American Media. In the last few years, especially the rise of YouTube stars, Asian American media has boomed with Wong Fu Productions, Fung Brothers, KevJumba, JK Films/David So, Jabbawockeez, and many more. They play an important role in the community--needed representation and control of production, for example--but they are not without their problems. For asks this week, we answer an ask from Sarah about access to social justice movement, butchrobot about developed/developing nation terminology, and 2goldensnitches about fighting with family members over the Gaza-Israel conflict.
