Actress Melissa Ponzio joins The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul to discuss the act of kindness that helped her book Teen Wolf, returning for Teen Wolf: The Movie, being inspired by Sigourney Weaver and much more. Melissa Ponzio spent most of her childhood clowning it up at school and impersonating her beloved family. Then late one night, the New York native City saw Sigourney Weaver in “Alien” and knew right then and there what she wanted to be…an alien! But they said she couldn't really be an alien, so on to the next best thing: acting! Over the years, Melissa's onscreen presence has captivated audiences across so many projects… seriously I could sit here naming them for the entire show: She's notably had recurring roles in the hit NBC series, “Chicago Fire,” AMC's “The Walking Dead,” HULU's “The Girl From Plainville,” BET+'s “First Wives Club,” Cinemax's “Banshee” and Lifetime's “Army Wives,” as well as a never-ending list of guest star roles. On the film front, she's been seen playing opposite Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy in Thunder Force on Netflix, Hilary Swank in HBO's original film Mary and Martha and their historical drama “Warm Springs,” with Kenneth Branagh and Cynthia Nixon, and - throwback - in the comedy, “Life As We Know It,” with Josh Duhamel and Katherine Heigl. Of course, Melissa is now back on screen in the Paramount+ “Teen Wolf: The Movie” revival, reprising her beloved role as ‘Melissa McCall,' the hard-working and devoted single mother to ‘Scott' (played by Tyler Posey). She previously starred in the MTV “Teen Wolf” series for six seasons. Got kindness tips or stories? Welcome back to another episode of STARGAZER: a podcast about astrology, alchemy and magic.I always say that success is a mixture of talent, hard-work and good timing. This remains true. But there is also most definitely an element of luck, which remains an ineffable mystery that lies just out of our understanding. Once in awhile, the universe just hands you a gift on a silver platter and you can’t attribute it to anything other than good fortune. That’s what just recently happened to me. Now you may remember the interview that my husband Andrei and I did with the amazing astrologer, Frederick Woodruff. Following that interview, I was informed that Michael Lutin had heard the episode and wanted to come on STARGAZER to have a talk with Frederick, Andrei and I!This was a stroke of good luck because if you’ve been into astrology for awhile, then you’ll know Michael Lutin as one of the OG astrologers of our day. But for those that don’t, Michael Lutin was the astrology columnist for Vanity Fair for over 25 years. He’s also published several astrology books and has been a guest speaker all over the world at many prominent seminars and universities. In the vast ocean of astrological work, Lutin’s voice is totally original. He has a profound historical, psychological and philosophical perspective in his writing but remains attuned to the currents of popular culture. He plays the role of an urbane intellectual, having lived in New York and Paris for decades. But he has an unerring sense of humor throughout his work that always demonstrates his intention to inspire personal and cultural healing. In his words he says:“I believe that deep down all people have a core of brilliant, shining, thrilling, blissful health, natural instinct and confidence. Around that core is all too often found a crust of defense and doubt, formed over the years...I believe my job is to help people break through that crust of defense and doubt to liberate their shining core and restore confidence in their own natural, healthy instincts to follow their own fulfilling path.”As you can imagine, it was a great pleasure to sit down and talk to Frederick and Michael. Getting to hang out with them was such a trip! I hope you enjoy…Thank you so much for listening to this interview with Frederick Woodruff and Michael Lutin. If the energies of Capricorn are going to dominate everything this year, it was nice to get to talk with with my astrology elders and learn something new about the work I have devoted myself to. It was socially uplifting, educational and has given me a lot to reflect upon as I allow myself to mature in this field. I have recommended Frederick Woodruff’s work before and I will once again encourage you all to check out his website at astroinquiry.com. Frederick’s astrological writing is always on pointe. And for those who would like to follow Michael Lutin, you can find him at https://michaellutin.com/And if you are interested in reading about the United States’ Pluto Return, Michael’s book on the subject is the best writing on the matter that I have found. Intro Hi everyone and welcome to Books Between - a podcast to help teachers, parents, and librarians connect kids between 8-12 to books they’ll love.  I’m your host, Corrina Allen - a teacher, a mom of a 9 and 11 year old, and struggling with some kind of rogue pollen in the air. So if I suddenly sound like the Albino from the Pit of Despair in The Princess Bride - that is why. This is Episode #51 and today I’m discussing some exceptional nonfiction reads and sharing a conversation with Wendy MacKnight, author of The Frame-up!   But first I am excited to tell you that today’s episode is sponsored by MoxieReader - a literacy app that’s like a fitness tracker for your reading life. It gives educators insights into their students’ reading lives, customized recommendations, and a way for kids to set and work toward their own reading goals in a way that is engaging and fun. My 5th graders and I have been trying it out over the past couple of weeks and they have been really been pumped up about hitting their own goals AND they’ve really liked sharing recommendations with each other. I feel like the summer is, for me anyway, the perfect time to explore something new so head over to MoxieReader.com and the use the code welovereading and try it out! A few announcements to pass along! This month’s Middle Grade at Heart book club pick is The Mad Wolf’s Daughter. We’ll have author Diane Magras on the show soon so watch out for that! In July we are reading, Just Under the Clouds and Where the Watermelons Grow is the August pick. In other news, we at MGBookVillage had SUCH as fabulous response to the #MGBookChat  Twitter chats that we’ve decided to continue them! So set a reminder for Mondays at 9pm EST  and check out #MGBookChat on Twitter for great conversations between educators, librarians, and authors about how to get great books into the hands of middle grade readers!    We have some great guest hosts lined up so far, but If you have an idea for a topic centered around supporting children’s reading lives and celebrating MG books and would like to co-host an upcoming chat, please contact us. (I’ll drop a link to more information and our upcoming schedule in the show notes.) Book Talk - Exceptional Nonfiction Reads This week’s book talk is all about nonfiction!! And I will admit, I do tend to read and book talk more fiction than nonfiction. (And I have heard from some of you about that.) But, my students and I are just coming off of a great Unit of Study all about informational texts and I wanted to share with you some of the books that have really hooked us. And as I started this list, I soon realized it’s too much for one episode. So consider this part one, and on the next show you’ll get more great recommendations! Let’s get into it with the hot reads with my fifth graders this year. All of these books had long waiting lists and complicated exchange arrangements with my kids - if you work in a classroom or library, you know what I mean. First up… The Science Comics series!! Oh my word - have these books taken off in my class!  They are graphic novel-style books that feature a character (like an animal) introducing you to their world and telling you everything you need to know about it.  For example, a favorite one in our class is Science Comics Dogs: From Predator to Protector by Andy Hirsch and it starts with an introduction by two canine scientists and then we meet Rudy, who talks directly to the reader about things like domestication, Punnett Squares, and evolution, and breeds, and the meanings of various howls and wags. We have another one called Coral Reefs: Cities of the Oceans which is told by a little yellow fish and is all about coral formation and water runoff and the effects of climate change. I will say - they are complicated and do contain sophisticated vocabulary like alleles and numerical dating vs relative dating and, well - lots of other words I can’t pronounce! But the support of the illustrations really helps, and I have found that readers will pick up what they can and skim the rest - and that’s okay. They next time they come across the term allele, they’ll be more likely to pick up that meaning.  There are a TON more in the series, Bats, Plague, Flying Machines, Volcanoes, Robots & Drones with new titles coming like Polar Bears and Wild Weather!! I definitely need to get more of these next year - they are bright and colorful - and just COOL!   Another hot nonfiction read for us this year is Don’t Read This Book Before Bed: Thrills, Chills, and Hauntingly True Stories by Anna Claybourne. This is a National Geographic Kids book published by Scholastic and how it’s set up is each topic has a two page spread with a big title, an introduction and then 4 or 5 text features like a timeline or picture, or fact box. It really lends itself to bite-sized reading and with each flip of the page you get a new topic like “Island of the Dolls” or “Buried Alive” or “Eerie Everest”. And there are six quizzes throughout the book like “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” or “Spot the Fake Photos!” so I liked that it also included some debunking and skepticism. This is book that some of your kids are going to look at and say, “No thank you!” but you know there are a lot you are going to go “Oh yeah! Let me at it!”   In a similar vein is a book called Beasties in My Backyard which also includes a two-page spread for common backyard (or household) bugs like centipedes and cicadas and cockroaches and lightning bugs! Each page has an intro and a HUGE super close-up photo (like see every hair on their legs photo) with the features labeled and explained. And then a fact file with its size and diet and location. And a few text features. Actually, even though the title is Beasties in my Backyard - our classroom has had its share of ants, and moths, and stink bugs, and centipedes recently. Just yesterday my teammate, Cindy, had to snag a spider out of my hair during lunch!  A couple other nonfiction books that my biology-loving students are getting into are 101 Hidden Animals (all about creatures who camouflage), Life As We Know It (about everything from the beginnings of life on earth to species and ecosystems and survival) and Ocean Animals: Who’s Who in the Deep Blue (another gorgeous National Geographic Kids book). Another super popular book this year is one called... Drones. It’s one of those short, wide books with 96 pages chock full of information. There’s a four page intro and then each spread is about a different drone - military drones and then civilian drones. I liked that the pictures are large and the text is large and well spaced so it’s really readable. Also - for each drone they include a “How Big Is It”  box with the silhouette of that drone with either a person or a bus or something to help you picture it. Two other books that have become very popular this year in the wake of student activist movements are Marching for Freedom by Elizabeth Partridge which tells the story of the Selma to Montgomery March in 1965 with a particular focus on the voices of the children who participated. Another book called Kids on Strike! tells the stories of children who organized in the early 1900s for better working conditions. Each chapter is about a different strike - from mill workers and coal miners and garment workers, It was a fascinating and timely read. I think it would be really interesting to have students compare a chapter from each these books to current news stories about student walkouts and the marches demanding gun control. My students are also really loving those Scholastic “A True Book” series - especially the one called Cybercriminals which is all about hacking and identity theft - topics they hear about in the news and want to know more about. I really, really love this series and they have a plethora of titles that can connect to just about any content area so you can make your reading time also hit some science and social studies. And - I probably don’t need to tell you this, but any of the Almanac / World Record-type books are hugely popular with my kiddos. They were with me too when I was their age! But boy have they changed! My tattered copy of the 19somethingsomething Guinness Book of World Records is black and white, teensy-tiny print, and maybe a picture or two? These books are chock full of color and images with bold words and color coded sections.  I don’t get a new one EVERY year but honestly I probably should they are so popular. Guinness has a great one every year and so does Scholastic.  And the National Geographic Kids Almanacs are also great. And there are also books like The Year in Sports and even ones specific to baseball or football. And I’m starting to realize that this list is pretty heavily loaded with Scholastic titles. Honestly, it’s because they are affordable and I can save up my points to get some of the more pricey ones. But I do realize that limits the selection, so next year I’m going to look for ways to fund some other titles, too. Alright - I hope this has encouraged you to pick up some new nonfiction titles for your children and students. And if you have a suggestion about a great nonfiction book we should all know about, email me at booksbetween@gmail.com or connect on Twitter at @Books_Between. Ben Falcone in conversation with Melissa McCarthy at Live Talks Los Angeles, May 21, 2017, discussing his memoir, "Being a Dad Is Weird: Lessons in Fatherhood from My Family to Yours".   The talk took place at the Moss Theatre in Santa Monica, CA   Ben Falcone is a film director, writer, and comedic actor. He made his directorial debut in 2014 with Warner Bros.’ feature film Tammy, which he also wrote and starred in alongside real-life wife Melissa McCarthy. Falcone’s upcoming projects include the feature film Life of the Party (New Line) which he co-wrote with McCarthy and will direct. The Boss is Falcone’s recently released directorial effort which he also wrote and produced with McCarthy, who starred in the film. Falcone was last seen in Fox Searchlight Pictures’ feature film Enough Said alongside James Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Director Nicole Holofcener, and in Jason Bateman’s directorial debutBad Words. Falcone also recently guest starred on FOX’s comedy hit New Girl and in NBC’s A to Z.Currently, he can be seen as a regular on the television series Nobodies(TV Land) which he executive produces.   Falcone’s additional feature film credits include The Heat, Identity Thief, Spy, What to Expect When You’re Expecting and Bridesmaids.    Melissa McCarthy received an Academy Award nomination for her role as Megan in the hit comedy Bridesmaids, directed by Paul Feig and produced by Judd Apatow. She also received BAFTA, Critics’ Choice, and SAG Award nominations for this role and won the MTV Movie Award for Comedic Performance of the Year.    McCarthy recently starred in The Boss which she co-wrote. In 2015 McCarthy starred in the hit film Spy for which she received a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Comedic Movie Actress, as well as a Golden Globe Award nomination, and Critics’ Choice Award nomination. In 2014 McCarthy starred in St. Vincentopposite Bill Murray and in Tammy which she co-wrote with her actor/writer husband Ben Falcone. McCarthy’s previous film credits include The Heat, Identity Thief, This is 40, The Hangover Part III and Ghostbusters. She will next star in Life of the Party which she co-wrote with Ben Falcone and wrapped production on the Fox Searchlight film Can You Ever Forgive Me?   McCarthy’s additional feature film work includes The Back-Up Plan, Life As We Know It, Pretty Ugly People, Just Add Water, The Nines, White Oleander, Pumpkin, and Go.Additionally, she starred in John August’s short film God, as a young woman having a gossipy phone conversation and short-lived spat with the Almighty, and also appeared in The Life of David Gale, starring Kevin Spacey.   On television, McCarthy starred as the clumsy culinary genius Sookie St. James in Gilmore Girls and Dena in the series Samantha Who? McCarthy won an Emmy Award and People’s Choice Award for starring as Molly on the hit CBS comedy Mike & Molly and has directed several episodes. She has also received Emmy nominations for guest hosting Saturday Night Live, which she has hosted multiple times. McCarthy recently returned to Stars Hollow for the Netflix reintroduction of Gilmore Girls. Currently, she can be seen making guest appearances on the television series Nobodies (TV Land) which she executive produces along with husband Ben Falcone.   Being a Dad Is Weird: Lessons in Fatherhood from My Family to Yours is a funny and intimate look at fatherhood that combines stories about his own larger-than-life dad and how his experiences raising two daughters with his wife, Melissa McCarthy, are shaped by his own childhood.   Ben Falcone isn’t a big shot movie star director at home. There, he’s just dad. In this collection of stories, Ben shares his funny and poignant adventures as the husband of Melissa McCarthy, and the father of their two young daughters. He also shares tales from his own childhood in Southern Illinois, and life with his father—an outspoken, brilliant, but unconventional man with a big heart and a somewhat casual approach to employment.   Ben is just an ordinary dad who has his share of fights with other parents blocking his view with their expensive electronic devices at school performances. Navigating the complicated role of being the only male in a house full of women, he finds himself growing more and more concerned as he sounds more and more like his dad. While Steve Falcone may not have been the briefcase and gray flannel suit type, he taught Ben priceless lessons about what matters most in life. A supportive, creative, and downright funny dad, Steve made sure his sons’ lives were never dull—a sense of adventure that carries through this warm, sometimes hilarious, and poignant memoir.

Episode 43: When Alexa first started her blog, ‘A Life In The Fashion Lane’, it became a form of therapy where she could express her thoughts and feelings and she never hesitated to hit “publish” on any post. At just seven years old her father was wrongfully convicted for a terrible crime and served five years behind bars at a maximum security prison where she would visit him everyday. Growing up in a small town in Eastern Connecticut, the story got around fast and due to what was going on in her personal life as well as becoming a blogger, she was beginning to to get bullied by the kids around her. Uncomfortable with her surroundings, at sixteen Alexa dropped out of school knowing that she had 0 intentions of going to college and was able to finish taking courses online. She would travel twice a year to New York City for Fashion Week and continued to push out as many blog posts as she could create. Her post “Role Model or Runway Model?” got sent around to major publications as it talked about the honest truth of the fashion industry and what she had experienced first hand trying to become a model and the eating disorders that were tagged along with it. At just nineteen years old she’s had segments on the Today Show, Good Morning America, Good Day LA, NBC Nightly News, Rachel Ray, featured on Rolling Stone with her thoughts on the Netflix Series “13 Reasons Why” and many other media outlets In this podcast Alexa discusses how there is a lot more that goes on behind the scenes of becoming successful than people realize, having the power to do whatever you want when being in a creative field and a young entrepreneur, being turned down from a Warner Brothers producer and reworking her brain to want something more, confidence is something that comes with age as you grow into yourself, if she wrote a book today she would title it “Life As We Know It” because of how quickly our lives change, importance of writing down your goals if you haven’t gotten the opportunity you’ve been waiting for and visualizing exactly what you want and stop caring what people think about you, give yourself enough credit. — Subscribe to our YouTube Channel for new interviews (and more) weekly: http://bit.ly/2zprpon Follow us on Soundcloud: http://bit.ly/2hcSBws Subscribe to iTunes: http://apple.co/2yE0u9l Follow us on social media: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2j82AHF Follow Bobbbaaaay on social media: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2Ap24ce Twitter: http://bit.ly/2hj6Ljm

Amanda Crew is an actress who’s best known for playing Monica on the hit HBO show “Silicon Valley,” which I absolutely love for skewering tech culture in a loving but deadly accurate way. If you haven’t seen the show please, please do yourself a favor and check it out - season 4 recently premiered on HBO. But her career goes back many years: she’s appeared in a ton of shows and movies like Smallville, Final Destination 3, Life As We Know It and much more. Today on the podcast, * Like almost everyone on my show, Amanda is a hyphen - she’s a passionate photographer, although it took her a while to give herself permission to be more than an actor - she talks about overcoming the social bias that you can be good at more than one thing * She talks about the low point of her career a few years back when the recession and a writer’s strike hit at the same time one of her movies flopped and she didn’t work for nearly two years - and how rebuilding her career from scratch was actually the thing that made her believe in herself more than ever and conquer the imposter syndrome * We also get into the phenomenon of dealing with “what’s next” - as an actor that’s a constant thing for her: wrap a season of the show and there’s the instant question of “ok so now what?” It’s not an easy one for many people to answer and she has some great thoughts on it that apply to any creator. It’s another show jam-packed with movies, so many of them that a time limit must be enforced. “Secretariat” gets a big ol’ “meh” from Bayer and Snider; “My Soul to Take” is one of the worst, most bafflingly bad horror films they’ve seen in a while; “Life As We Know It,” despite its premise, isn’t awful, but ‘taint good neither; “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” is a fairly good comedy about depressed teenagers; “Never Let Me Go” is faithful to its source material, especially in conveying the emotions of it; and “Waiting for Superman” is a somewhat dry but important documentary about our crappy, crappy schools. There’s also talk of people’s favorite ball-free sports movies — lots of boxing, running, and kicking.
