On the 433rd episode of Piecing It Together, Josie DeMarco joins me to talk about Anora. Sean Baker's latest starring Mikey Madison was an early awards favorite when we recorded this episode. Then I kept waiting for a good time to release the episode and in the months since, it's won DGA and PGA and is now looking like a clear Oscar frontrunner. Puzzle pieces include Get Him To The Greek, Married To The Mob, Ghost Dog and Zola.As always, SPOILER ALERT for Anora and the movies we discuss!Written by Sean BakerDirected by Sean BakerStarring Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura BorisovNEONhttps://neonrated.com/films/anoraJosie DeMarco is a film critic and poet.Check out her YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/@josephinedemarco8749And follow Josie on Twitter @josiepoetessMy latest David Rosen album MISSING PIECES: 2018-2024 is a compilation album that fills in the gaps in unreleased music made during the sessions for 2018's A Different Kind Of Dream, 2020's David Rosen, 2022's MORE CONTENT and 2025's upcoming And Other Unexplained Phenomena. Steven and Ian begin today's episode by reacting to the recent Sean "Diddy" Combs news (1:22), and speculate on whether Get Him To The Greek is the most cancelable movie of all time. From there, they talk about the Father John Misty album announcement, and muse about the Pure Comedy album cycle (8:22). Steven then brings up Ian's great recent profile of Japandroids, which digs deep into the personal backstory of the band ahead of their farewell album (19:07).They also talk about Bright Eyes upon the release of their album, Five Dice, All Threes, and some troubling viral concert moments (30:10). Speaking of viral concert moments, the guys also dig into the recent reunion craziness involving Jane's Addiction and The Smiths (38:30).In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the New Zealand emo band Yon Loader and Steven stumps for the latest from Nilüfer Yanya (51:34)New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Steven and Ian begin this week's episode in an unlikely place — a discussion of the 2010 comedy Get Him To The Greek, which in light of the recent (horrifying) Sean Combs' news might be the most canceled film of the 21st century. From there, they quickly pivot to two other films about musicians, the forthcoming Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet and a reported Bruce Springsteen film starring The Bear's Jeremy Allen White. Will these films be any good? Let's hash it out (5:33).Next comes a conversation that truly no other music critics are having this week: A 20th anniversary remembrance of Aerosmith's Honkin' On Bobo (13:07). Is this really an album of blues covers or is it just a funny album title? How exactly does one honk on bobo? Finally, the guys do the Q2 Fantasy Albums Draft. Will Steven finally get it together and beat Ian for the first time? (22:29).In Recommendation Corner (51:25), Ian talks up the Brazilian shoegaze act Sonhos Tomos Conta while Steven praises the new EP from Wild Pink.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Carla Gallo is an actor whose first major film role was in David Russell's feature SPANKING THE MONKEY. This breakout performance gained Carla an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and the film won the Audience Award in Sundance. This caught the attention of filmmaker Judd Apatow who cast her as the female lead in the cult favorite UNDECLARED. Carla went on to work consistently with Apatow in such features as, THE 4O YEAR OLD VIRGIN, KNOCKED UP, SUPER BAD, FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, FUNNY PEOPLE and GET HIM TO THE GREEK. Carla played dynamic roles in the iconic series, CARNIVALE, CALIFORNICATION and MAD MEN. Her other television credits include BURNING LOVE, 2 BROKE GIRLS, WORKAHOLICS, SNEAKY PETE, and recurring roles on BONES and MAYANS M.C. In both Universal's NEIGHBORS and NEIGHBORS 2, Carla gives scene stealing performances as Seth Rogen's and Rose Byrne's loveably unglued friend. Carla has completed work on two Netflix features, A FUTILE & STUPID GESTURE directed by David Wain, LITTLE EVIL directed by Eli Craig. Her other feature credits include, I LOVE YOU MAN, WE BOUGHT A ZOO, MOTHER AND CHILD, HAPPIEST SEASON and FOUR GOOD DAYS. Most recently, Carla will re-team with Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a lead in the Apple TV+ comedy series PLATONIC which is now out! Jim Piddock is an actor, writer, and producer, who began his career on the stage in England, before emigrating to the U.S. in his early twenties. He made his theatrical debut in the U.S. in “The Boy's Own Story”, a one-man show about a soccer goalkeeper, at the Julian Theatre in San Francisco. The show was an instant success with critics and audiences, winning Jim the Bay Area Critics' Best Actor Award. The show was then produced Off-Broadway and he quickly gained the attention of the New York theatre scene. That same year (1982), he was cast in Noel Coward's “Present Laughter” by George C. Scott, who directed/starred in the revival, which also featured Nathan Lane, Christine Lahti, Dana Ivey, and Kate Burton. The show was a big hit on Broadway and Piddock soon found himself appearing in a string of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including the original US production of “Noises Off”, “The Knack” at the Roundabout Theatre, and “Make and Break” with Peter Falk at the Kennedy Center. After replacing Frank Langella in “Design For Living” at the Circle-In-The-Square theatre, he moved to Los Angeles and has since appeared in a long succession of tv shows, such as “The Tracey Ullman Show”, “Coach”, “Max Headroom”, “The Twilight Zone”, “Murder She Wrote”, “Mad About You”, “Angel”, “ER”, “Friends”, “Crossing Jordan”, “The Drew Carey Show”, “Lost”, “Monk”, “Without A Trace”, “Dollhouse”, “Party Down”, “Law And Order: LA”, “Castle”, “Two And A Half Men”, “Children's Hospital”, “Mom”, “The Royals”, and “The Grinder”. He has also starred in several notable tv movies and mini-series, like “From The Earth To The Moon”, “A Mom For Christmas”, “She Creature” on HBO, and “The Women Of Windsor”. He appeared in his first movie in the top-grossing film of 1989, “Lethal Weapon 2”, in which one of his lines, “But…you're black” in answer to Danny Glover's request to emigrate to South Africa, became a catchphrase for the film. Other feature film roles soon followed, including notable appearances in “Independence Day”, “Traces Of Red”, “Multiplicity”, “Burn Hollywood Burn”, “Austin Powers 3”, “A Different Loyalty”, “Love For Rent”, “See This Movie”, “Love For Rent”, “The Prestige”, “Epic Movie”, “Who's Your Caddy?”, “The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising”, “Meet The Spartans”, Woody Allen's “You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger”, “Get Him To The Greek”, “The Cold Light Of Day”, “The Five Year Engagement”, “1915”, “Think Like A Man Too”, and “Kill Your Friends”. But it is probably his diverse performances in the improvised Christopher Guest comedies “Best In Show” (as the Dog Show commentator with Fred Willard), “A Mighty Wind”, and “For Your Consideration” that he has gained the most attention as a chameleon-like character actor, barely recognizable from role to role. As a voice actor, he is most notable for providing the voice of Major Zero in the English version of the massively popular video game “Metal Gear Solid 3”, Bolero the Bull in the movie “Garfield 2”, and the fictional artistic director of Forever Young Films, Kenneth Loring, doing a hilarious commentary in the directors' cut of the Coen Brothers' “Blood Simple”. His voice work in animated tv series and in video games is extensive and includes “The Lion King”, “Extreme Ghostbusters”, “The New Batman Adventures”, “C-12: Final Resistance”, “Return To Castle Wolfenstein”, “The Lord Of The Rings”, “101 Dalmatians 2”, “The Bard's Tale”, “Dead Space: Downfall”, “Ben 10: Ultimate Alien”, Alfred in “Batman: Under The Red Hood”, “Batman: The Brave And The Bold”, “Skylanders: SWAP Force”, “Turbo FAST”, and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. He currently released his best-selling book, “Caught With My Pants Down and Other Tales From A Life in Hollywood.” We are so grateful to have him as a guest on, “Black Canvas.”
Jim Piddock is an actor, writer, and producer, who began his career on the theater stage in England and the United States. From there, he moved on the small screen, appearing in such TV shows as The Tracey Ullman Show, Coach, Max Headroom, The Twilight Zone, Murder She Wrote, Mad About You, Angel, ER, Friends, Crossing Jordan, The Drew Carey Show, Lost, Monk, Without A Trace, Dollhouse, Party Down, Law And Order: LA, Castle, Two And A Half Men, Children's Hospital, Mom, The Royals, and The Grinder. You have also seen him on the big screen in major feature films such as Lethal Weapon 2, Independence Day, Austin Powers 3, Get Him To The Greek, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind and For Your Consideration. Happy 1 year birthday to us! Thanks to everyone who's joined us on this ride so far! We're releasing this episode 1 year + a day on from our first episode, and we couldn't be more chuffed to have made it this far. We're so glad you're all here with us! Paul's made no bones about his admiration for the music of his parents' generation, the music hall numbers his family loved that must've filled the Macca home, either on record or when dad Jim played during family gatherings. He claimed to have written "When I'm 64" when he was 14, so it's safe to say he's always had a soft spot for this style of music, though John may have scoffed at it (though his brilliant guitar solo on "Honey Pie" shows that he knew EXACTLY what it needed, so he was better versed than he admits). During one of those Macca family gatherings in 1967, Paul came up with "Your Mother Should Know," a tribute to women before his generation, whom he thought, may be a bit hipper and wiser than the growing generation gap may think. The song serves as the big song & dance number which finishes the Magical Mystery Tour film, and much like the film itself, can be a divisive entry in the Beatles' catalog. As mentioned by our guest this week, to put out a song like this during the height of psychedelia & rock and roll, well, it's a pretty punk rock move on Paul's part. We're joined this week by one of our favorite singers & songwriters, Mike Viola, who first entered the scene in the late 90s with his band Candy Butchers, and as the singer on the song "That Thing You Do!" from the Tom Hanks' directed film. In addition to writing songs for films such as "Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story," and "Get Him To The Greek," Mike is an in-demand songwriter and producer, having worked with artists such as Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco, Mandy Moore, Shania Twain, Dan Wilson & Semisonic, The Monkees, and more. We chat with Mike about what makes this song tick and why it's such a classic Paul song despite some of its quirks, creativity being born out of trauma, basing one's entire music career on Ram, meeting Paul (legit some of the best meeting-Paul stories ever), and his absolutely fantastic new album, 2020's Godmuffin, which we at RTB strongly suggest you pick up because it's wonderful. Follow Mike at https://www.mikeviola.com, on Instagram @themikeviola, and on Facebook.com/mikeviolamusic. What do you think? Too high? Too low? Just right? Let us know what you think! With close to 30 albums to his name, including his latest Mitch Marine produced effort Ivan’s Barbershop, Dan Bern is one of our very best. He’s written songs for movies like "Walk Hard" and "Get Him To The Greek," he’s toured with Ani DiFranco and he’s dueted with Emmylou Harris. But he doesn’t just write songs—he’s an accomplished painter, the author of several books and a pretty solid tennis player. He and I are going to bash it around one of these days on the tennis court, but until we do, our rallies will be conversational. In this particular rally, we chat about teasing Marshall Crenshaw in Alaska, the songwriting magic of Mike Viola and the quiet magic of Peter Fleming. We also talk about the creative process during quarantine, the John Riggins theory of productivity and why it’s easier now to say no….
Singer/songwriter/podcaster/painter Dan Bern admits: “It was not lost on me, being an isolated Jewish kid in Iowa, that Bob had come from just up the road in Minnesota.” When he first heard Dylan at age 15 (“everything he was saying had a bit of a sneer to it. It was a portal for me”), he traded in his cello for a guitar and started writing songs. They eventually included the outrageous Talkin' Woody, Bob, Bruce and Dan Blues (“When I met Springsteen, he said, “I hear ya wrote a SONG about me!”).Bern sat through Renaldo & Clara twice in a row in a Camden Town cinema when it was first released: “it seemed so fun and free and loose”. On Bob's Born-Again days: “Jews wrestle with God. They talk to him as if he's just another dude”. Does he keep up? “Bob's songs are always with me. Like Bible verses, floating in and out of my head. It's a nourishing songbag.”Share our long-distance visit with the man Dylan once called “a scurrilous little wretch” (after he wrote a fake interview with Bob's mother). All this and more, as they say.Dan Bern has released 25 albums and played thousands of shows across North America and Europe. Bern's songs have appeared in numerous TV shows and films including Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story, and Get Him To The Greek. He also writes and performs songs for the Amazon Prime kids' programme The Stinky and Dirty Show. A visual artist, Bern has had gallery showings in Florida, New York City and San Francisco. He is the author of several books, and acts in the radio drama podcast 10,000 Crappy Songs: in which he plays an ex-songwriter turned private eye. This week’s guest is Judd Apatow, director, producer and writer of many of the biggest comedy films and hit TV shows of the last two decades including The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up and This Is 40. He also helped propel me into the world of Hollywood acting, casting me in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek. We discuss everything from writing for the Larry Sanders Show, what fuels creativity, the the power of intuition and the magic of comedy! Judd’s new movie, The King of Staten Island, is available to Rent At Home now.
Zas watched Get Him To The Greek with his two sons. Will it be a bobo title, as Zas calls it if the NBA season resumes this year? (That is unless the Heat win it). Zas has a problem with Steve Kerr being on The Last Dance poster.

In this episode of Ask Jillian, Liz and I talk about depression and anxiety, how it has affected our lives in different ways. I have felt hard hit by it these last few years due to divorce, grief and cancer. But being a single parent, I so often have to put on a brave face, get up and keep going. Since my cancer diagnosis, in moments of loneliness and despair, it has been my online social media family that has lifted me up sharing your amazing stories and inspired me to have hope that it will get better. I know I am not alone, depression and anxiety affects millions of us. It is often not diagnosed, misdiagnosed or there is a shame associated with it that keeps someone from seeking help. Dealing with mental health should be considered brave. It takes incredible strength to admit you need help. I am not afraid or ashamed to talk about my depression anymore and ask for help. It's my only way out, to talk about it and take it head (that’s a pun) on! [Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] On this episode of Film.Music.Media: All Access we visit composer Lyle Workman whose sound and skills have essentially defined a whole genre of modern comedy. We talk about his musical career as a session musician and how it all led to film composing when a chance encounter ended up nabbing him the job to score The 40 Year Old Virgin. We discuss working with Judd Apatow including on the new Netflix series Love. We discuss his approach to comedy such as his work on Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek. Lyle talks about how the industry can typecast composers, and the challenges of trying to show off your range in other genres. Lyle has carved a defining path and sound in comedy scoring in an era where the “R-rated” adult comedy reigns supreme, and getting his insight makes this interview fascinating and fun. This is a mix tape. This won’t be for everybody. I love a number of musicals which have been released in the last 12 years or so. Netflix, as of late, has been releasing a few of my favorites which has had me reminiscing, singing the songs, out loud at home. Films such as Across the Universe, and especially Sweeney Todd. This mix tape consists mostly of male performances. The ladies in the movies sing incredible numbers, but I don’t feel the guys get enough love. I feel the performance from the men is masculine and stoic. A far departure, I feel of how men are portrayed in so many of today’s films and tv shows as grown man children. Overly sensitive and without a clue. The films covered in this mix tape but not in this order. -Sweeney Todd (2007) with Johnny Depp, directed by Tim Burton. -Across the Universe (2006) with Jim Sturgess, directed by Julie Taymor. -La La Land (2016) with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, directed by Damian Chazelle. -Dreamgirls (2007) with Jamie Foxx, directed by Bill Condon. -Les Miserables (2012) with Hugh Jackman, directed by Tom Hooper. -Get Him To The Greek (2010) with Russell Brand, directed by Nicholas Stoller -Sing Street (2016) directed by John Carney. -Walk the Line (2005) with Joaquin Phoenix, directed by James Mangold. Other musicals, honorable mentions, which are some of my favorites are but are not on this mixtape are: Ray (2004), Once (2007), Begin Again (2013), Rock Of Ages (2012). Enjoy! Not all marriages are meant to last forever – some of them don't make it to a year. That was the inspiration for the comedy about romance, I Give It A Year by writer/director Dan Mazer. Dan tells host Robin Milling he went to an elaborate wedding where the guests were wagering it wouldn't last past six months, and it didn't. Married in Morocco, Dan is going on eight years with his wife which he says works because they are right for each other. Comedy ensues in the film when Rose Byrne, married to the wrong person, is wooed by the stunning Simon Baker who turns out to be Mr. Very Right. Dan confesses he has a huge man crush on Baker who had everyone on set melting over him. “Simon Baker could turn me! Honestly I had feelings that I never felt before when I would be in the room with him. He is mesmerizing. And the hair is something to behold! As Josh the character says, 'I could drink him in!'” Fellow Aussie Rose Byrne tells Robin she actually grew up mooning over Baker watching him play a heartthrob on Australian soap opera, E Street. In the film she was impressed by his unwavering composure when he wines and dines her and doves are flying everywhere. “He was literally unflappable landing on his head, and I was a mess! Luckily nobody got pooped on but that would've been the least of my worries!” Next Rose reunites with Get Him To The Greek director, starring with Seth Rogen in Townies.

It's been over a month since our last ep, and that means lots of summer movies to catch up with on Film Geek Central!First up, the long-awaited film adaptation of one of our favorite TV shows, THE A-TEAM. This one actually has some great casting in front of and behind the camera.GET HIM TO THE GREEK is the film we've been nicknaming, "That Film with the Guys We Hate." True, we're not big fans of Jonah Hill or Russell Brand. But will this be as funny as everyone says?SEX AND THE CITY 2 is the sequel to the TV show about formerly promiscuous women who have everything handed to them and still find plenty to complain about.PRINCE OF PERSIA is the newest video game adaptation, this one from Jerry Bruckheimer and Company. We know Jake Gyllenhaal can romance cowboys and talk with mutant bunnies, but can he carry an action film?SPLICE is a low-budget horror film which was nonetheless given a huge push for the summer. We've been wanting a good monster movie for a long time, so hopefully this is it.SHREK FOREVER AFTER rounds out the animated epic with everyone coming back for the last roundup.ROBIN HOOD is the epic Ridley Scott film that is sort of about Robin Hood and sort of needs to bring in a lot of that international box office to keep the people at Universal from crying themselves to sleep. All of this plus film news and our DVD Picks the W- well, since the last time we had a show. The whole thing happens this Sunday at 8:00 PM Eastern / 7:00 PM Central. Hope to see you there, Film Geeks! It's great to be back!
