Howdy Mountaineers, and welcome to your Thursday afternoon news break! My name is Pruett Norris. Let's get started. In local High Country news, the Watauga Democrat is buzzing with anticipation for the High Country Beekeepers' Bee Festival on Saturday, October 8th! The Bee Fest will be held at Hidden Happiness Bee Farm in Deep Gap, and is running from 9am to 5pm rain or shine. Visitors can expect to see live music, educational programs, a variety of honey and handmade craft vendors, and, of course, bees. Parking is free, so beekeepers and appreciators one and all, buzz on over! A big deal news update in state tidings, WRAL TechWire in the Triangle reports that Amazon will be hiring 1000 new employees in the region for jobs that average a pay of $19 an hour. The increase in positions comes as the company begins to ramp up sales for the holiday season. The 1000 Triangle jobs are part of 150,000 Amazon hopes to hire for across the country. Best of luck to any of our listeners in the Triangle looking for a seasonal position, and I'm looking forward to the holiday season… but only after Halloween. Worldwide, NPR reports a mass tragedy has occured in Thailand. A former police officer murdered at least 24 children and 11 adults at a day care center, before killing himself, his wife, and young son when he returned home. This is the worst mass shooting in Thailand since 2020, and another indication of the worldwide trend towards gun-related violence since the turn of the century. On behalf of WASU, my heart goes out to all the victims and their families. Finally, the weather as ever courtesy of Boone Weather DOT COM. It's another sunny afternoon on the forecast, with a high of 68 degrees and a low of 45. There is no rain on the forecast through this weekend, so enjoy the week of sun Mountaineers, and I'll see you on Wednesday. I'm Pruett Norris, and this is your college, your station, your music, 90.5 WASU The App FM.

Today’s episode, Tech on social change, economic disparity, and social mobility. The Premise: The topics of social change and technology seem disparate and disjointed. However, regions across the country like the Triangle are seeming to benefit from an innovation economy that is growing at an exponential rate. The collateral damage is the many disenfranchised individuals throughout our region. Their chances of benefitting from that growth is very much a pipe dream. We focus our attention on social mobility, a term that simply highlights the likelihood that someone who is born into one economic demographic will move upward into another. The southeast of the United States and more specifically North Carolina is amongst the worst states in the country for the people having the ability to break the cycle of generational poverty. In short, whatever economic situation you are born into in North Carolina, there is a high likelihood that you will die in that same economic situation. The Guests Kia Baker: Kia Baker is the Founding Executive Director of Southeast Raleigh Promise, a community quarterback organization overseeing the revitalization of the southeast Raleigh area of our region. Southeast Raleigh Promise is the 16th Purpose Built Community in the US and seeks to affect change with a multilayered approach to community development. Using the tenants of a defined neighborhood, community quarterbacking, mixed-income housing, cradle to career education, and community wellness. SER Promise engages the community by providing a holistic approach to change. Baker talks about how to overcome the issues with our failing educational infrastructure, giving people tools for success and how to get hyperfocused in problem-solving. Find out more about what SER Promise is doing and the new elementary school they are building in partnership with the YMCA in downtown Raleigh. Rob Shields: Rob Shields is the Executive Director of the Recity Network, a coworking space for collaboration and operation for non-profits in the Durham, NC region. As an advocate for his community and the organizations holding up the city of Durham, Shields is always seeking to make connections that uplift the larget community while teaching others what it means to enlarge your circle. Shields sheds light on the disconnect between the growing number of nonprofits in the Durham region while the effectiveness of those organizations becomes more surface level and ineffective. He also sheds light on how we can all use our privilege to help a system, not built for some, succeed for all. Engage with Recity and follow them online to see how to get engaged with the solution. Syretta Hill: Syretta Hill is the Executive Director of Step Up Durham. Step Up Durham is a 501 c3 organization that works to provide job training and job placement to the most disenfranchised and the those most in need of a second chance. Working with a team of community organizers and engagers, Syretta focuses her attention on how to uplift a community by seeing the best in each individual and helping the individual to see the best in themselves. On March 6, 2019, WRAL TechWire held its first TechWire Live event of 2019. Wells Fargo sponsors the event series, and this was the first of four subject matters scheduled for 2019. The content centered around leadership and the itinerary divided the night into two sessions. The first session took a macro look at how effective leaders move the ball forward in their communities. The second session took a micro look at how to make the most significant impact within each person’s own organization. James Amato, the Strategy and Business Development manager of WRAL TechWire, hosted the event to a packed house. The crowd at WRAL-TV’s historic Studio A was comprised of community leaders, CEO’s, serial entrepreneurs, and industry thought leaders. The audience gathered to discuss ways to realize their leadership potential in an increasingly divisive environment fully. This episode of Tech on Tap is an edited recording from the second-panel discussion of the night featuring Katie Gailes, of Wake Tech Community College, as the moderator. Gailes titled her panel discussion: Leadership in the new era, the high tech blessing, and the high tech curse. With that title as the road map, Gailes was joined by Gary Greene and Chris Weatherly, of Greene Resources and WRAL digital solutions respectively. Greene Resources is a high profile recruiting firm that seeks to help companies locate and land high caliber talent. Gary Greene leads Greene Resources as founder and CEO and spoke on his view of leadership and how he engages his employees for long term partnership and mutual benefit. "Leadership is not a position. Leadership is action," Greene said in response to the definition of leadership. WRAL Digital Solutions is an Emmy award-winning subsidiary of Capitol Broadcasting Company and operates to provide effective marketing solutions for local and national brands. Chris Weatherly leads his growing team as the Director of Digital Sales and Operations. Weatherly spoke on how to help leaders get their message across in an ever-evolving technological environment. Both men spoke on how to identify and develop leaders within your organization and took audience questions on how to respond to the changing workforce. Listen to the recording of the first panel, featuring Jesica Averhart (Leadership Triangle), Brenda Berg (Best NC), and Eric Boduch (Pendo). https://www.wraltechwire.com/2019/03/19/tech-on-tap-techwire-live-leadership-in-review/ Listen to Tech on Tap and look out for the announcement of the next TechWire live event, sponsored by TechWire partner, Well Fargo.

Eric Boduch, the co-founder of Pendo, lent his expertise on the need to locally shift focus from competitors within our state lines to companies on the global stage. Both spoke on the region's diversity of thought and workforce as opportunities that make the Triangle, and North Carolina as a whole, attractive to businesses and individuals on the move.
