My guest is Phil Harrison, whose debut book explores football in Europe's last communist state, Albania. It's a fascinated story of football in a secretive and isolated country.
The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
"The era is brought to life by the accounts of Albanians who lived through it, which capture the importance of football to a populace starved of any other source of communal enjoyment. The otherworldliness and innate cruelty of the Stalinist regime provide a terrifying backdrop to their tales," reads the blurb for Phil Harrison's book The Hermit Kingdom: Football Stories from Stalinist Albania. Albania, on the far eastern edge of Europe, followed a rather unique path through the Cold War - and has a unique soccer culture to match that period. Caught between Russia, China and neighboring Yugoslavia, in a country that outlawed religion for all intents and purposes, the stories from Albania between 1946 and 1991 offers the use of pigeons by fan groups, evil Yugoslavian radios, an almost World Cup qualifier, and an erratic dictatorial regime that proudly practiced Stalinism long after Stalin was death. More than nostalgia or chronology, Harrison's book takes us into the stadiums and the city squared of a remote country in a remote time. This episode also features a brief audio reportage from listeners Dan and Archie, who attended the Europa Conference League game Slovan Bratislava vs Sturm Graz - and 3 Albanian contributions to the Eurovision Song Contest. Rory and Dave sit down with Phil Harrison of @fussballgeekz to discuss one of the biggest former clubs in Europe - Dukla Prague! They go through their trophy-laden history, international exploits and the factors which allowed them to be as successful as they were. They also discuss FK Dukla Prague, the 'successor' to the original club, and ask the million dollar question; can FK Dukla Prague truly call themselves the successor clubs of Dukla Prague?

WITH this week's managerial departures at Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City, the FootballTalk team have recorded an extra podcast to cover the events. The YP's chief football writer Stuart Rayner joins ‘caretaker' host Phil Harrison to discuss Xisco Munoz's sacking by Sheffield Wednesday and the departure of Mark Hughes at Bradford, as well as focussing on who are the best – and most likely – candidates to take over at each club. Could the ‘Red Adair' of football Neil Warnock – a lifelong Blades fan and former manager of Wednesday's fierce Steel City rivals – be about to take over at the Owls – and how would that go down with the fans? Who will succeed Hughes at the Bantams and is there enough time to turn the team around from an 18th-placed straggler in League Two and back into a play-off contender?

We arrive at Episode Two, where Rory will be hosting a jam-packed show which sees us cover another two clubs featured in the book. They are former Albanian side KF Spartak Tirana and former Belarusian side, Partizan Minsk. Both are really interesting stories with political aspects to them, while a rogue and much maligned owner that Scottish fans may remember makes an appearance. Joining us is our special guest, Phil Harrison who I interviewed in the chapter about KF Spartak Tirana, as Phil has a keen interest in Albanian football, even writing his own book on the subject.

The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act offers funds for those impacted by nuclear weapons testing and the uranium industry. Although President Biden signed a two-year extension of the bill before its expiration over the summer, Phil Harrison, an advocate for Navajo workers and downwinders, would like to see more. He's been pushing for an amendment to RECA that includes expanding who is covered. And he says those Navajo who should qualify for compensation often don't have the required proof of residence or employment. Plus, the main branch of the Boulder Public Library closed Monday afternoon to allow for testing related to methamphetamine contamination. And 2022 was a particularly bad year for the Colorado River. The 23-year drought across the Southwest grew worse and demand for the river's water continued to outstrip supply. Climate change is shrinking the river that supplies 1 in 10 Americans and policymakers are caught in a standoff about how to share it. // Show Notes: // Photo: The Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project is a reminder of the legacy of the uranium industry, its impact on the landscape and people. Video game companies spend lots of money on games but apparently not on voice actors. And we hoped the latest google service would buck the trend but nope, not gonna happen and why do we play these games anyways? http://www.joystickandmouse.com http://shop.joystickandmouse.com/ https://www.patreon.com/joystickandmouse Show Notes: Video games are a nearly $200 billion industry. That's a lot of money sloshing around an increasingly small group of notoriously secretive companies. Where does it all go? At least some of it is poured back into competing storefronts and subscription services like PlayStation Plus and Game Pass. Thanks to a new SEC filing, we now have some hard figures for what this new console war looks like, with both Sony and Microsoft shelling out millions over a single game. https://kotaku.com/game-pass-ark-ii-survival-evolved-ps-plus-ps5-xbox-sony-1849642722 The English actor who stars in the hit Bayonetta video game series has asked fans not to buy the latest release in the franchise, after revealing that she was offered just $4,000 (£3,500) to reprise the role. https://www.ign.com/articles/bayonetta-voice-actor-hellena-taylor-says-she-didnt-reprise-the-role-in-bayonetta-3-as-she-was-only-offered-4000 https://www.theguardian.com/games/2022/oct/16/bayonetta-actor-hellena-taylora-boycott-video-game-pay-row Google is shuttering its digital gaming service Stadia, the latest ambitious project to get cut as the company looks to shed costs. The gaming service, which launched in 2019 and runs on phones and the Chrome browser, “hasn't gained the traction with users that we expected,” wrote Phil Harrison, a Google vice president, in a blog post Thursday. “We've made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service,” he wrote. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/video-games/google-shut-gaming-service-stadia-ceo-continues-cost-cutting-efforts-rcna50054 There is a gamer in everyone. Some of us spend countless hours saving princesses, dodging bullets or burning tires in an online game. Others are modest gamers and only venture out to roll a dice in a board game. This message was delivered by guest speaker Phil Harrison on Sunday, October 23rd!
The PlayStation 3 was a strange thing. The console, arriving late to the party that the Xbox 360 kicked off quite brilliantly, was a big deal. Certainly, in Sony-owned countries like the UK, it seemed everyone was waiting for it. It didn't really matter that the launch line-up was a bit naff, that the console itself looked hideous, or that it was ridiculously expensive. The follow-up to perhaps the greatest console of all time, the PS2, was a huge deal. But what exactly were people desperate to play on their new PS3? I was at the March 2006 UK launch, somewhere in London, probably in a store that no longer exists and is now a Greggs. While there we interviewed the now Stadia-failer Phil Harrison – who is essentially a giant. I'd never spoken to a man so intimidatingly large before. Phil, as big a deal as he was in his PlayStation days (lots of ducks, etc) was not my highlight of the evening. Oh no. It was the public. More specifically, the actual batshit reasons some of them were buying a new PS3 a billion pounds. One person, a young man with a pencil-thin moustache, quite enthusiastically told me: "Sonic." This took me by great surprise, so much so that I almost laughed for the first time since BBC2 comedy show "Fist of Fun" aired in 1995. But I digress. This person was queueing for hours in order to spend £425 (plus the price of the game) to play a utterly terrible Sonic game, which everyone knew was terrible as it had been released on the Xbox 360 the previous year. A lot of people in the queue couldn't even name a single game they were buying, simply saying something about Blu-ray and FIFA – although the first FIFA on PS3 was some six months away from releasing. No bother. Ridge Racer 7 was right there, at launch. But no, of course no one mentioned it. However, of all the reasons I was told as to why people were buying a PS3 at launch, one took the crown as the most bizarre, nonsensical bit of accounting I'd ever heard. "Yeah, I worked out that I can save the money I was going to spend on a laptop by just buying a PS3," a man told me. "I'll do all my work on the PS3. Just need to plug in a keyboard. Got a printer ready to go," he added. I nodded politely and walked away. To my knowledge, no wordprocessor of any form was released for the PS3 (not unless you got Linux installed on it). I hope you installed Linux and worked your little heart off, man. I really do. Anyway. Welcome to VG247's The Best Games Ever Podcast: Ep.21 - The best dead game you'd buy a console for if it came back. Please do let us know what you think of the show – and if this is your first time listening, do go back to listen to the previous episodes. If you've got suggestions for topics, we'd love to hear them. To be clear, here, no one has sent in a single suggestion. I'm starting to think no one reads this. Which is rather sad. “What is VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast?” you ask while pondering just how awful the PS3 launch line-up was and how the whole thing was saved by it being a blu-ray machine. Anyway, this podcast, which is why you're on this page, is essentially a 30-minute panel show where people (me and some others on VG247) decide on the best game in a specific category. That's it. It's good. Listen to it. We've got some details on the show's content below (if you want to get a refresher before heading to the comments to make a wonderful, considered post or don't want to listen but do want to know what games we picked), so if you want to avoid spoilers, don't scroll past this warning. W A R N I N G The best game dead game you'd buy a console for if it came back This is the topic of Episode twenty-one of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. Here's a rundown of who picked what. Tom - Ridge Racer Is there another game series that screams launch title more than Ridge Racer? It was not only a launch game for the original PlayStation; it was THE launch game for the original PlayStation. It proved what that console could do and sold an entire generation on the new console in a market that had been dominated by SEGA and Nintendo. Alex – Time Crisis I've picked Time Crisis, but I have to level with you: this pick is really all about a whole genre, which is home ports of light gun arcade shooters. These things have been around since the days of the NES and Duck Hunt, and entered a sort of heyday during the PS1 and PS2 eras, but then in the PS3 era it seemed to die out. For my money, it also died out through no fault of its own. Light gun games were the victim of a range of circumstances. For a start, they're incompatible with modern LCD and LED flat-screen displays without a whole truck-load of cumbersome sensors - which is how Time Crisis 4 shipped on PS3. I'd also wager that the genre suffered as a result of the great Guitar Hero crash - that is, the period when, after years of plastic guitars, drums, fitness boards, skateboards, and even Wii Remote enclosures in the shape of guns to play crappy-feeling pointer-based shooters, people just got bored of buying plastic tat. All of that stuff went down the pan, and took Light Guns down with it. But the time is now for their return. A technical solution has been created for the hardware incompatibility problem, and there are many thirty-somethings with huge light gun nostalgia. I'd buy any machine that managed to get a new Time Crisis, Point Blank, Virtua Cop, or even just remasters of the classic games. I'd pay a king's random. Connor – Def Jam Look, let's not mess around here. Def Jam was only really good once. However, it was damn good with Def jam: Fight for NY. It was the full package, a wild idea pulled off perfectly. Sure it's a bit dated but it's old as heck, man. That's why if they made a new one, with a new cast of modern artists, updated gameplay, and the same slick style I'd buy a whole new console quicker than you could throw Snoop Dogg out of a three story window. I'd even buy a Nintendo Console. Makes it even worse, more so than the other good suggestions, is that every now and again some guy on the official Def Jam Twitter account will post something like "Hey, where would you like the next Def Jam game to be set, Chicago or Philly?" They've done this like 10 times now. It's gone from raising hype to rubbing it in our faces. Make a new one, please. Come back in a week for another episode of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. For more than 40 years, millions of tons of Uranium ore were mined from Navajo lands to make nuclear weapons. Thousands of workers were exposed to deadly radiation. Those workers are about to lose funding to cover their health costs. Phil Harrison and Amber Crotty join Meghna Chakrabarti.
On this week's show, Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join guest presenter Phil Harrison to discuss the latest international break for England, the booing of Harry Maguire at Wembley and how those Yorkshire clubs who were able to play games fared. They also look ahead to the return to action of all teams this weekend, including Leeds United's bid to pull clear of trouble in the Premier League and Barnsley's crunch clash with relegation rivals Reading.
Phil Harrison, beat reporter for Buckeyes Wire and USA Today Sports, discusses Ohio WR Garrett Wilson and what separates him from other wide receivers in this year's draft class.
People living on and near the Navajo Nation have been grappling with the legacy of 40-plus years of uranium mining. According to EPA cleanup reports and congressional hearings, mines were abandoned, radioactive waste was left out in the open, and groundwater was contaminated. This episode is the second half of a two-part series about uranium mining on the Navajo Nation. Part I discusses the history and economic forces that brought mining projects to Indigenous land. It also explores working conditions uranium miners faced, and the response of the federal government when workers exposed to harmful radiation spoke out. Abandoned Mines, Abandoned Health – Part II continues the conversation with former uranium miners. It explores what a coalition of Indigenous leaders and non-Native locals are doing to force the cleanup of hazardous uranium mining sites and seek expanded recognition by the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, which provides remuneration to former uranium workers harmed by radiation exposure. The push for attention and recognition from Congress was difficult. Along the way, former workers and local residents formed advocacy groups focused on documenting worker health. Former mine worker Phil Harrison was among those who went to Washington, D.C., to push for a cleanup plan.“Seven of us testified,” Harrison recalled, “and, based on that, they gave a directive to federal agencies who said, ‘OK, EPA, BIA [Environmental Protection Agency, Bureau of Indian Affairs], nuclear regulatory commission. This is what we're going to do.'”Citizens have also served as volunteers helping to shape environmental research on the lasting effects of uranium mining on the land. Today, Indigenous groups say they continue to uncover pollution from the 1979 tailings pond spill near Church Rock, New Mexico. RECA is set to expire in June this year, unless Congress acts. Meanwhile, future uranium mining projects loom as a possibility.Voices from the Episode: Linda Evers, president of Post 71 Uranium Workers Committee and former uranium mine workerPhil Harrison, president of the Navajo Uranium Radiation Victims Committee and former uranium mine workerLarry King, activist and former uranium mine workerJudy Pasternak, journalist and author of Yellow Dirt: An American Story of a Poisoned Land and a People BetrayedBen Ray Luján, Democratic U.S. senator from New MexicoSeason 4 of “American Diagnosis” is a co-production of KHN and Just Human Productions. Our Editorial Advisory Board includes Jourdan Bennett-Begaye, Alastair Bitsóí, and Bryan Pollard.
On the morning of July 16, 1979, a dam broke at a uranium mine near Church Rock, New Mexico, releasing 1,100 tons of radioactive waste and pouring 94 million gallons of contaminated water into the Rio Puerco. Toxic substances flowed downstream for nearly 100 miles, according to a report to a congressional committee that year.In the 1970s, uranium mining was a good source of income, leading many Indigenous people and other locals to seek out jobs in the mines and the mills where uranium ore was processed in preparation for making fuel. The work was often grueling, but many young people didn't have other options to support their families. Episode 3 is an exploration of the forces that brought uranium mining to the Navajo Nation, the harmful consequences, and the fight for compensation that continues today. It is the first in a two-episode arc of reporting about uranium mining.Working in the mills, people were exposed to a powdery radioactive substance, called yellow cake, that is produced as part of the uranium milling process.Larry King, who is Diné and a former uranium worker, said he worked in his street clothes.“So it was just usually one of my old shirts, my pants. No gloves. No respirator. Nothing. So everybody's breathing all that dust.”Another former uranium worker, Linda Evers, said she wasn't told about the dangers associated with uranium exposure.“When we had safety meetings, it was about regular first aid,” she said. “There was no mention of radiation — or any of the side effects from it.”The consequences of radiation exposure can build quietly in the body, over decades and generations. It can cause multiple types of cancer, birth defects, and other ailments.Click here for a transcript of the episode.Voices from the episode:Amber Crotty, Navajo Nation Council delegate, Window Rock, Arizona — @KanazbahLinda Evers, president of Post 71 Uranium Workers Committee and former uranium mine workerPhil Harrison, activist and former uranium mine workerLarry King, activist and former uranium mine workerJudy Pasternak, journalist and author of Yellow Dirt: An American Story of a Poisoned Land and a People BetrayedEdith Hood, activist and former probe technician for Kerr-McGee Corp.Cipriano Lucero, former uranium mine workerSeason 4 of “American Diagnosis” is a co-production of KHN and Just Human Productions. Our Editorial Advisory Board includes Jourdan Bennett-Begaye, Alastair Bitsóí, and Bryan Pollard.

DID somebody mention a European Super League? YP football writers Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Phil Harrison to discuss – among other things – the decision by 12 of Europe’s so-called biggest clubs to create a closed-shop, European Super League. Those at the very top of the footballing tree - including six from the Premier League - found a way of scoring quite possibly the most spectacular own goal ever seen in the game. Sunday was when news first started to come out about the plans but, by Tuesday night, following a barrage af criticism and anger from fans, administrators and politicians, those plans were left in tatters, with the majority of clubs having now withdrawn and left scrambling for cover. We’ll also look at the rise of Barnsley who, under Valerien Ismael, have put themselves in a prime position to reach the Championship play-offs as well as casting an eye towards Bramall Lane to look at the decisions which now have to be made by Sheffield United in light of the weekend confirmation of their relegation from the Premier League.
