Author and academic Dr Tony Cowan talks about his recent book, Holding Out. This book examines German operational command during a critical phase of the First World War from November 1916 to the eve of the third battle of Ypres. The situation faced by the German army on the Western Front in 1917 was very different from the one anticipated in pre-war doctrine and Holding Out examines how German commanders and staff officers adapted. Tony Cowan analyses key command tasks to get under the skin of the army's command culture, internal politics and battle management systems from co-ordinating the troops, matériel and different levels of command needed to fight a modern battle to continuously learning and applying lessons from the ever-changing Western Front. His detailed analysis of the German defeat of the 1917 Entente spring offensive sheds new light on how the army and Germany were able to hold out so long during the war against increasing odds. This is published by CUP. Tony is a retired diplomat and member of the British Commission for Military History, Society of Military History and Western Front Association. He co-edited a translation of the German official monograph on the battle of Amiens (2019).

Episode 36: Holding Out in Pennsylvania

We're back for another thematic episode - do superheroes hold people back from doing things for themselves? Do we stay on topic? Well... you'll have to listen to find out! Issue 153- Holding Out for a Hero Intro Background Holding Out for a Hero. Not just the single-most overused song on movie soundtracks in the 21st century, also the name of a trope denoting the tendency of individuals, governments, and entire societies who exist in worlds where there are superheroes fighting crimes and averting disasters all over the place to become overly dependent on them, to the point where heroes actually breed a degree of learned helplessness at best, and breathtakingly casual recklessness at worst. Do I need to take the time to check that my safety harness is properly fastened before I climb up this building's spire to do maintenance? Ehh...if I fall, there's someone out there who will save me. Do we need to spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to install Positive Train Control throughout our rail system? Why? It costs nothing for a superhero to just save everyone whenever there's a derailment. If they're a super-strong superhero, they'll even put the train back on the track for us. Should the government seek a diplomatic solution in this international conflict? Are you kidding? Look at all these superheroes we have on our side. We'll do whatever we want and you can take it up with them if you have a problem with it. This is one of my favorite story mines of the superhero ethos. The conflict between helping people and making their lives better versus doing so much for them that they lose the ability or the will to do anything for themselves. Probably because it's extremely relatable here in the real world. Sociological interactions from the individual level of parent-child all the way up to the global level of government-citizen have always involved a need to strike that kind of balance. Guaranteeing people's safety, security, and relative prosperity has a tendency to lessen the responsibility people feel for providing it to themselves and one another on an individual level. Superheroes intervening to solve dangerous situations as they're happening can create a type of bystander effect that dissuades anyone else from even trying to help out, especially if it's something that's an everyday occurrence. Man oh man, does this have a lot of real-world parallels that we'll get into. But first, as always, some comic book examples. 1) Elliot S. Maggin's classic Must There Be A Superman? The Guardians of the Universe let Superman know that one of the tenets of the Green Lantern Corps is to handle the much larger, world-threatening crises and not do everything for sentient races, because it can actually stagnate evolution itself. When Superman gets back to Earth, he tests the assumption out by landing in a random small town, where the citizens ask for his help with EVERYTHING, including fixing a leaky roof.  2) During Mark Waid's first run on The Flash, a recurring theme is that part of the reason that the scientific community of Central City is so groundbreaking in its work is that they can push the boundaries of safety in their experiments well beyond what would normally be considered acceptable. They view having The Flash around if anything goes wrong as the only safety measure they actually need.  3) Ultimate Spider-Man Annual 2. After Peter's ninth or tenth run-in with The Shocker, he is shouting at the top of his lungs in frustration as to how he's still not in jail after all the times he's been caught. Thankfully, Foggy Nelson happens to be nearby and tells him straight up: dude, you have to get someone to hang around and give a statement to the police afterwards, or a first-year law student could get any criminal charges dropped. When there's a big crowd of people who just watched a superhero battle, every individual person is going to assume someone else is handling that, and go about their day. 4) Watchmen. President Nixon doesn't even try to reach a detente with the Soviet Union or China at the height of the Cold War. America has Dr. Manhattan as the ultimate trump card against anything the Communist world could ever do. As a result, they wipe out the North Vietnamese Army in a heartbeat and behave aggressively on the world stage throughout the 70s and 80s. This bites them back in a major way when Manhattan decides he doesn't want to be a part of humanity anymore and leaves Earth.  5) Red Son. A villain-ish example. Superman creates a utopia in the Soviet Union largely by solving all of the problems that arise himself. But he's cognizant of the fact that he's doing it, and tries very hard to get his citizens to start stepping up and following his example. He also could simply take over the world and install communism upon all of humanity by force. But it's critically important to him that humanity makes the choice to adopt it themselves, or the ideology won't have triumphed, only he would. Real-world examples? You want real-world examples? I've got real world examples for you. Seat belts. Introduced in the 1940s, it took over 5 decades for them to become mandatory in all 50 states, and the public fought against them every step of the way. One of the reasons why, that we've all just forgotten about, because it's been decades now and people just accept it? Studies done at the time laws were being implemented showed clear evidence that drivers disregarded safety behind the wheel more readily, they drove at unsafe speeds more frequently, and engaged in carelessness and negligence more often, viewing their seat belt as the ultimate form of protection. As recently as 2001, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study conceded the likely possibility that the presence of seat belts were a contributor to more frequent accidents even as they decreased fatalities. (21:53) In economics and political science, as you know, we call this the Moral Hazard. Safety rails in public policy meant to provide government help to people and institutions in hard times can increase the likelihood that they will engage in behavior more likely to bring about said hard times, as the fear of the consequences is taken out of the equation. Nowhere is this more prevalent today than in the world's financial industry. It has just become accepted now as a matter of course that the world's governments will always step in with currency support, quantitative easing, and outright bailouts when there is an economic downturn, allowing the large investors of the world to socialize the risks of their operations among the entire population whether they're a customer who's opted in to do so or not. Because of the interconnectedness of the global financial markets, the costs to the world's economies of a full-scale collapse of large banks and investment houses is seen as much higher than the occasional large payments it takes to keep them afloat. (36:42) On a micro, individual level, there's the bystander effect and the diffusion of responsibility. The tendency of individuals being less likely to offer help to someone in need when there are a large group of people present, figuring someone else will handle it. The Kitty Genovese case that first brought these terms to the lexicon in the 60s has largely been discredited, but for my money, you need look no further than any instance where there's someone in some kind of dangerous situation anywhere in a public place, what is the first thing almost anyone does? Do they step in and help? Call 911? Scream for someone else to call 911? No, they take out their freaking cell phones and start recording it to post on the Internet, as if the 300th camera angle is going to document what's going on in a way the other 299 won't. It. Drives. Me. Freaking. Nuts. (50:39) So as a superhero, how do you use that light touch, and do for people what they can't do for themselves without taking away their ability to do anything for themselves? I'm begging you though, please consider that other techniques may be beneficial. I'm not trying to sound mushy or woo woo, but if you ignore emotions now, they just come out later in unexpected ways. I don't have to know YOUR history to know that from my own. But be my guest, blast away at evil all you want, hoping to blast away your pain. Or do you want someone to point out opportunities for a better quality of life? E: *sigh* It's just that, well, with what I do, there's not a lot of time for processing or thinking about all that stuff. There's a job, so I do it. I'm trying to do it better than my father, and since I'm talking to you, that's already an improvement. My goal is to make it so no one else has to endure what I have. If that means keeping my head down until it's done, then so be it. I can handle it.  D: I'm sure you can. I only want you to find as much joy and peace in that process as much as you endure the pain and suffering. That's blasphemous to those who have only learned the obstacle as the way.  E: Well, if you can't crack a smile while putting bullets in the head of mindless brain-eaters, then you're deader inside than they are. I mean, I wouldn't keep doing this if it wasn't at least somewhat entertaining. S'not all bad, I suppose. But I guess I can try to find more of the joy in things while I'm at it. D: Careful, or I might smile back at you to let you know that I enjoy what I do and find things outside of my job to grant me strength and love so it doesn't consume all of my waking hours, no matter the demand. Steven thinks it's beneath us to pander to outdated nonsense, and I'm…I'm talking to you about it because I basically already made a decision for all of us, and I don't want remorse over doing whatever the hell I want because I think I have all of this under control. And I don't want a guilt trip from you telling me that this is what you wanted to talk about in the first session because I couldn't handle it directly and let the other guys take the lead too much. Plus I HOLD ON! There's no need to get defensive. I'm thankful for your candor. I'll take what you're saying at face value. - Even if it's an ancient god that is partly responsible for the fact that I have this condition in the first place?  All I'm saying is that…whatever your descriptions are, relationships change. Some better, some worse. There's no point in placing blame. It sounds like you decided to move on. - That's not entirely accurate. I still do a ton under his auspices. I want to. Just not HIS way. There's bound to be some situations that piss him off. I'm well past the point of caring. Yes he gave me these gifts, and yes those gifts came with strings attached. But the hand operating the strings also became a ceiling, and if I wanted to grow I was going to have to break the string, the ceiling, the hands, the whole damn thing. I guess the question is, is it worth it to you? Growth and destruction can look a lot alike. Recognize that your own actions can create more trauma for yourself. - Are you TRYING to get me riled up? I'm not going to throw away everything I've built for some false sense of freedom. I'm willing to talk to you because I want to be smart about this. My mind's made up. I don't need hand holding. So you're not Khonshu's lackey…but you're willing to wear the uniform. You maintain the moniker. You have a long way to go before anybody looks at you another way. - I can tell I've matured, because there's a part of me that would want to punch you in the face for that…and NO I don't mean it the way you're thinking.  OK, so what do you mean then? - I mean… you have no idea what I struggle with on a regular basis. But I'm not the guy anymore who's going to use that as an excuse to lash out, or sit here and think you're making assumptions about me so I might as well live up to them. I'm trying to be a better man, gods dammit, but these things take time and energy. So I'm not going to work on reinventing the wheel just so I can say it's mine. I'll do what I can with what I can, and opinions be damned. Don't be a reboot, be a remix. I like it. I apologize if I'm pushing buttons, but that's because I won't know exactly what clicks until you answer like that. I have enough trust in you that I can challenge your base assumptions, and vice versa. So, where do we go with your plan? - Well, you may have trust in me, but all cards on the table, I'm still not fully on board with you. No offense, but I've been stabbed in the back too many times at this point to go headfirst into someone else's idea of what they think will help me be better. Even if they're letting me have one hand on the wheel. I was there before, and it was all an illusion. So we can keep talking, and maybe eventually we'll get there. But that's all I can promise you for right now. From what I gather of you, though, I think that's enough for you to work with. Can I level with you? When you first met me, you were all over the place. Your sentences bordered on senseless, and you continued to split so many times that it made my head spin. I knew that this was through no fault of your own, and I could have very easily considered you a danger. But I still want to work with you. You know why? Because even with all of the alters, all of the violence, all of the chaos, I saw a man that was determined to find a way to do what he considers to be the right thing when he could have shunned the world for what it has done to him. They are on the trail of a Loki Variant but to the tune of “Holding Out for a Hero” they are taken out by the hooded figure who captures and kidnaps Hunter C-20. Meanwhile back at the TVA headquarters, Mobius meets with Judge Renslayer to explain that Loki is a valuable asset that is needed to catch the murderous variant.Given one last chance Loki is tasked with searching through the Variant's history to find clues on where it might be. Loki suggests that his Variant could be hiding in apocalyptic events throughout the sacred timeline which would mask any activities since that timeline will end. To test the theory Mobius takes Loki to Pompeii in 79AD. With the impending eruption of Mount Vesuvius they learn that nothing Loki does shows up as a variant timeline. Using the origin date of the Kablowee Candy left behind in France at the Variant's previous attack, Loki quickly identifies where they could be hiding. When the team arrives at the RoxxCart superstore in 2050s Alabama, Loki meets his variant. They possess Hunter B-15 and other customers of the store to inform Loki that he has no idea of the scale of their plan, it isn't about him. Finally revealing their true form to Loki they set off a chain of time reset charges that are sent throughout time creating hundreds of breakaway moments and destroying the Sacred Timeline. Welcome back fellow Defenders, to our spoiler filled Marvel podcast, as we chat about Loki Episode 2 "The Variant". Loki quickly shows his worth to the Time Variance Authority. Loki Episode 2 "The Variant" Synopsis Head Writer: Michael Waldron Episode Written by: Elissa Karasik Episode Directed By: Kate Herron A team of Time Variance Authority Minutemen arrive at a Renaissance Fair in Wisconsin in 1985. They are on the trail of a Loki Variant but to the tune of “Holding Out for a Hero” they are taken out by the hooded figure who captures and kidnaps Hunter C-20. Meanwhile back at the TVA headquarters, Mobius meets with Judge Renslayer to explain that Loki is a valuable asset that is needed to catch the murderous variant.Given one last chance Loki is tasked with searching through the Variant's history to find clues on where it might be. Loki suggests that his Variant could be hiding in apocalyptic events throughout the sacred timeline which would mask any activities since that timeline will end. To test the theory Mobius takes Loki to Pompeii in 79AD. With the impending eruption of Mount Vesuvius they learn that nothing Loki does shows up as a variant timeline. Using the origin date of the Kablowee Candy left behind in France at the Variant's previous attack, Loki quickly identifies where they could be hiding. When the team arrives at the RoxxCart superstore in 2050s Alabama, Loki meets his variant. They possess Hunter B-15 and other customers of the store to inform Loki that he has no idea of the scale of their plan, it isn't about him. Finally revealing their true form to Loki they set off a chain of time reset charges that are sent throughout time creating hundreds of breakaway moments and destroying the Sacred Timeline. Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, was brought up in Skewen, a small village near Swansea. She grew up to become one of Wales' best known performers, achieving chart success all over the world. She is recognised for her distinctive husky voice, and a long list of hit singles including Total Eclipse of the Heart, It's a Heartache, Holding Out for a Hero, Lost in France, More Than a Lover, Bitterblue and If I Sing You a Love Song. In her 50-year career, Bonnie has performed for audiences in countries across the world, and she has enjoyed critical acclaim for her recent albums Rocks and Honey and Between The Earth and the Stars. Her latest album The Best Is Yet to Come – due for release on 26 February 2021 – is a contemporary approach to the sounds and styles of 80s pop rock.   As a teenager, Bonnie was influenced by the biggest female voices of the 60s, especially Tina Turner and Janis Joplin. After spending several years performing in local pubs and clubs around South Wales, first with Bobbie Wayne & the Dixies and later with her own band, Imagination, Bonnie was discovered by talent scout Roger Bell in 1974. RCA Records launched Bonnie's recording career two years later with her debut single My! My! Honeycomb. Her breakthrough hit was Lost in France, written by her managers Ronnie Scott and Steve Wolfe. The single peaked at no. 9 in the UK, and spent six months in the German charts. After enjoying further success with subsequent singles More Than a Lover and Heaven, Bonnie finally broke into the Billboard charts with It's a Heartache, which reached no. 3 in the United States. Of the four albums that Bonnie recorded for RCA, Natural Force was the most successful, selling over half a million copies in the United States. Ready to embrace the new decade, Bonnie moved to CBS Records to work with Jim Steinman in the early 80s. Their fateful collaboration resulted in the groundbreaking international hit Total Eclipse of the Heart, a multi-platinum selling single that still enjoys cultural relevance in the 21st century. It is lifted from her fifth album, Faster Than the Speed of Night, which saw Tyler become to first British female artist to make her debut appearance on the UK Albums Chart at no. 1. During the 80s, she recorded several songs for movie soundtracks, including the UK no. 2 hit Holding Out for a Hero for Footloose, and the Grammy-nominated single Here She Comes for a restoration of Metropolis. Hide Your Heart became Bonnie's third album for CBS, produced by Desmond Child. It features several songs that became hits for other artists, including The Best for Tina Turner and Save Up All Your Tears for Cher. In the 90s, Bonnie signed with German label Hansa Records for three albums. The first, Bitterblue, rivaled the success of her career-defining album Faster Than the Speed of Night in some European countries, earning 4x Platinum status in Norway. Her follow-up albums Angel Heart and Silhouette in Red also became Platinum records in parts of Europe. Bonnie reunited with Jim Steinman in 1995 after signing with EastWest Records. She recorded epic cover versions of Making Love (Out of Nothing At All) and Two Out of Three Ain't Bad for her album Free Spirit, which featured the work of top producers including Humberto Gatica, Christopher Neil and David Foster. Her second record with EastWest, titled All in One Voice, arrived shortly before the new milennium. The celtic-influenced pop album was recorded in Dublin and Hamburg, and features a haunting cover of “I Put a Spell on You”, produced by Mike Batt.   In the early 2000s, Bonnie signed a one-off deal with EMI to record Heart Strings, an album of classic rock covers featuring her touring band and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Bonnie recorded her next two pop-rock albums, Simply Believe and Wings, with producers Jean Lahcene and Stuart Emerson. Bonnie received an ECHO Music Prize for ‘Best International Pop/Rock Female Artist' in 1994. She has also received three Goldene Europa awards, three Grammy and BRIT nominations, two AMA nominations and one ACM nomination. She is the recipient of an honorary degree from Swansea University,  and she was presented with a Gold Badge from BASCA (now The Ivors Academy) in 2013. Bonnie has represented the United Kingdom at two international music contests. In 1979, she won the Yamaha World Popular Song Festival with her song ‘Sitting On the Edge of the Ocean'. After competing in the Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Believe in Me' in 2013, Bonnie picked up two ESC Radio Awards for ‘Best Song' and ‘Best Singer'. Over and above the timeless tracks that made her a household name, Bonnie has proven her versatility by enjoying a bilingual number one album in France, and performing duets – past collaborators include Vince Gill, Cher, Fabio Jr., Shakin' Stevens and Todd Rundgren. In 2013, she released her country-influenced album Rocks and Honey, recorded at the legendary Blackbird Studios in Nashville with David Huff. In 2019, she released Between the Earth and the Stars, another contemporary record with nods to past moments from her 50-year career. She recorded it with David Mackay, who produced her first two albums back in the 70s. Songwriters include long-time collaborators Kevin Dunne, Brian Cadd and Stuart Emerson, with new contributions from Sir Barry Gibb and Amy Wadge. The album also boasts three exciting duets with Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard and Francis Rossi. Her follow-up album The Best Is Yet to Come will arrive in February 2021. The release was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but now Bonnie feels ready to celebrate: “I hope these new songs will lift your spirits. I am so happy and proud of this new album. It simply rocks and brings a smile to my face every time I put it on. The moment we can get back on stage and see your smiling faces will be extra special. I promise the best IS yet to come.“

D.h. es gibt keinen Unterschied zu Mann und Frau in der Bezeichnung. Ich starte meinen Podcast mit einer kleinen Serie. In mehreren Teilen in diesem Podcast erfährst Du, warum Stimme so wichtig ist. Welche Bedeutung sie im Geschäftsleben hat. Wie Du zu mehr Voice Power in der Stimme kommst und dadurch auch „gehört“ wirst. Ich habe viele Tipps und Tricks die ich nach wie vor selber anwende. Kennst du das? Kurz bevor es losgeht, merkst du wie der Puls schneller schlägt, die Hände sind schweißnass, die Stimme ganz schwach. Laut Forscher ist die Angst vor Menschen zu sprechen größer, als die Angst vor Krankheit, Scheidung oder Tod. Über 50 % der Menschen die vor Publikum sprechen, egal ob privat oder beruflich, haben Lampenfieber, sind nervös, dazu kommen Stimmprobleme, nasse Hände, zittrige Knie, ein flauer Magen, trockener Mund. Auch Persönlichkeiten wie Sänger und Entertainer Robbie Williams, die Sängerin Adele oder auch Schauspieler Johnny Depp sind vom sogenannten „Bühnen-Gen“ ausgelassen worden und leiden unter großem Lampenfieber. Somit sind wir in berühmter Gesellschaft. Die Stimme ist eines der machtvollsten Instrumente der Menschheit. Wenn wir kommunizieren, entscheidet unser Gehirn innerhalb weniger Sekunden, ob die Stimme des Gegenübers für uns stimmig ist, oder nicht. Alleine das zu wissen, ist schon sehr wertvoll. Denn wir entscheiden ganz intuitiv, wem wir zuhören und entscheiden sofort, ob die Stimme für mich stimmig ist, ja sogar angenehm, ich will mich weiter unterhalten. Die Beherrschung von Stimme und Sprache eröffnet uns ungeahnte kommunikative Möglichkeiten. Wir alle sind täglich von einer Vielzahl von Stimmen umgeben. Ich denke da nur an die Nachrichten, Stimmen im Supermarkt, in der Werbung, Radio oder Fernsehen. Wir hören Stimmen im Theater und sprechen täglich mit Kollegen, Freunden oder der Familie. Trainierten und wohlklingenden Stimmen hören wir gerne zu. Ausgebildeten Stimmen, die auch klar verständlich sind. Das sind die Menschen, denen wir gut folgen können, wenn sie uns etwas erzählen. Im Gegenzug dazu sind Stimmen in höheren Tonlagen, schrille Stimmen, einschneidende Stimmlagen oftmals sehr nervig für unser Gehör. Da wollen wir nicht weiter hinhören. Das tut unseren Ohren weh. Den Schrei eines Baby etwa, hörst Du aus einer Menschenmenge heraus. Vielleicht kennst Du die drei magischen Zahlen der Kommunikation. 7-38-55. Laut einer Studie von Dr Albert Mehrabian, er ist US-amerikanischer Psychologe und Professor an der University of California in Los Angeles, besteht Kommunikation zwischen Menschen zu 55 Prozent aus Körpersprache, 38 Prozent wird über die Stimme transportiert und nur 7 Prozent kommen dem Inhalt zu. Ich bin mir da aber nicht so sicher, dass diese Zahlen so zutreffen. Denn der Content ist schon wichtig. Es gibt diesbezüglich noch andere Studien, d.h. geringfügig kommt es zu Abweichungen, meist beziehen sich diese jedoch auf eine andere Vorgehensweise bei der Messung bzw. bei den unterschiedlichen Begriffsabgrenzungen. Ich selber bin jedoch der Meinung, dass es mehr als 7 % dem Inhalt zukommen. Ein Beispiel: Wäre eine Verständigung mit Körpersprache und Stimmeinsatz ohne eine Fremdsprache zu können möglich, wenn tatsächlich nur 7% der Inhalt die Worte ausmachen? Vielleicht kennst Du das aus eigener Erfahrung. Man unterhält sich, meist im Urlaub mit jemanden ohne die Fremdsprache zu können. Nur mittels Körpersprache und kann sich dennoch verständigen. Zumindest verstehen, was gemeint ist. Großteils halt. Das nennt man nonverbale Kommunikation. Wir können nicht nicht kommunizieren sagte der österreichische Kommunikationswissenschaftler und Autor Paul Watzlawick. Das bedeutet, dass wir immer etwas mitteilen, auch wenn wir nichts sagen. Wer nichts sagt oder sich einer Kommunikation noch stärker verweigert, macht gerade damit sehr deutlich, dass er nicht kommunizieren will, jetzt nicht, mit der Person nicht oder in der Situation nicht. Ergo. Wir kommunizieren immer miteinander, ob mit oder ohne zu sprechen. Lt. Jeanette Bergmann, Stellvertretende Leiterin in einem Sprachzentrum in der Nähe von Bonn, sind es sogar 69%, die der Körpersprache zugesprochen werden. Die Bedeutung von Körpersprache und Stimmqualität, wird von Laien häufig unterschätzt, daher werden Bühnendarsteller so intensiv in Stimmmodulation und Körpersprache trainiert. Auch Schauspieler überzeugen primär durch nonverbale Elemente und wirken nicht wirklich mit Worten. Jeder gute Schauspieler sollte in der Lage sein, das Wort „nein“ in mindestens 10 verschiedenen Bedeutungsnuancen vermitteln zu können. Vor allem für Vortragsredner und Speaker sind solche Erkenntnisse von großem Vorteil. Warum? Weil ein Vortrag, eine Präsentation, eine Rede auch vom erlebten lebt. D.h. Ein bisschen Schauspielerei kann nicht schaden. Denn nur durch einen lebendigen Vortrag bleibt das Publikum aufmerksam und mit dabei, bei dem was Sie sagen. Mit der Stimme wird viel mehr vermittelt, als die meisten Menschen vermuten, weil eine gut funktionierende Stimme nicht so selbstverständlich ist. Jede Stimme und jede Sprechweise ist im individuellen Rahmen optimierbar. Es geht nur um den gewissen Trick um das „gewusst wie“ um dahin zu kommen. Unsere Stimme ist ein Instrument, das man lernen und perfektionieren kann und das hörst Du alles in dieser Serie. Ziel ist es, die Zuhörer, Deinen Gesprächspartner bei Deinem Vortrag nicht nur inhaltlich, sondern auch stimmlich zu fesseln. Nur so wird das Gesagte auch ankommen. Hast Du Dir schon einmal überlegt, wie Du auf andere wirkst und warum? Und: Wie kannst Du wirken? Was würde sich dadurch ändern, wenn Du sicherer und souveräner beim Gegenüber ankommst? Daher ist das gewusst wie auch wichtig, denn Stimmbildung bedeutet als erstes die Bildung eines Stimm -und Sprechbewusstseins. Damit Du auch wirklich „gehört“ wirst bei dem was du sagst. Damit Deine Botschaft beim Gegenüber auch ankommt. Vor allem Frauen haben schneller und öfter Stimmprobleme als wir Männer. Warum? Das hat mir der Schwingungszahl der Stimmlippen zu tun. Beim weiblichen Geschlecht schwingen die Stimmbänder 220x in der Sekunde, bei Männern nur 110x. Daher kommt es zur Stimmproblemen. Übrigens: Die Höhe des Tons hängt davon ab, wie oft sich die Stimmlippen pro Sekunde öffnen und schließen. So – haben wir das auch geklärt. Ich kann mich noch gut an eine meiner schlimmsten Stunden erinnern, wo mir bei einer Moderation vor knapp 2000 Menschen fast die Stimme versagte. Als Moderator war ich war eine ganze Woche für einen Event gebucht. Jeden Abend eine große Show mit über 2000 Menschen. Pro Abend versteht sich. Schon im Laufe der Woche habe ich bemerkt, meine Stimme ist nicht so wie sei sein soll und wird immer schwächer. Dann, am letzten Abend, bei der letzten großen Show, der Abschiedsgala, kam es fast zum Totalverlust meiner Stimme. Also der absolute Worstcase für einen Sprecher oder Moderator. Ich habe gewusst, da muss ich jetzt durch, die Stimme darf nicht versagen. Gott sei Dank, weiß ich als professioneller Sprecher, wie ich meine Kraftreserven mobilisieren kann und habe mir den Druck ganz unten vom Bauch, aus dem Zwerchfell geholt, gestützt wie man das nennt und habe somit den letzten Abend im wahrsten Sinn des Wortes „überstanden“. Danach war ich beim Facharzt und ich hatte 2 Monate lang entzündete Stimmbänder. Was war passiert. Ich kann mich noch erinnern, ich habe mir einige Tage vorher beim Paragleiten, ja das ist meine Passion, eine leichte Halsentzündung geholt, nicht sofort erkannt und daher verschleppt. Es ist daher schon wichtig zu wissen wie Stimme funktioniert und wie sie reagiert, um im richtigen Moment präventiv handeln zu können. Die Stimme ist Trägerin der Botschaft, gilt als wichtigstes Präsentationselement und ist Multiplikator für den Inhalt. Viele Menschen arbeiten in Berufen wo ihre Stimme täglichen beansprucht wird. Lehrer, Schauspieler, Moderatoren, Manager, Telefonisten, Verkäufer. Oftmals plagen diese Menschen jedoch Stimmprobleme, sie leiden unter Heiserkeit, haben den berühmten „Frosch im Hals“ und schlagen sich mit Stimmermüdung herum. Jede Art von Stress oder Anspannung wirkt sich sofort auf die Stimme aus. Für eine Sängerin wie beispielsweise die Reibeisenstimme von Bonny Tyler, sie wurde in den 1980er Jahren durch Hits wie Total Eclipse of the Heart und Holding Out for a Hero weltweit bekannt, ist die Stimme ihr Markenzeichen. Im der Geschäftswelt wären die ersten Anrufer wahrscheinlich weniger erfreut, wenn Du klingst, als hättest Du die ganze Nacht durchgemacht. Vor allem in der heutigen Zeit, wo die Kommunikation miteinander etwas vernachlässigt wird, spielt Stimme, Rhetorik, Artikulation, Präsenz eine große Rolle. Es wird wohl niemand behaupten, die Qualität der Kommunikation mit dem Kunden oder der Ton im Unternehmen selbst wäre ohne Bedeutung, Hauptsache das Produkt stimmt. Je austauschbarer Waren und Leistungen, desto wichtiger wird die Differenzierung in der Vermittlung. Was macht Marcel Hirscher oder Christian Neureuther bevor sie ins Rennen gehen? Genau. Sie wärmen sich auf. Und das gilt für Menschen, die viel sprechen müssen wie eben Lehrer, Telefonisten, Moderatoren usw. genauso. Ich war im März als Moderator gebucht. Stargäste waren Glasperlenspiel. Caro und Daniel. Vor der Bühne waren rund 2.500 Menschen. Da steigt der Puls auch bei mir. Ich gehe da folgendermaßen vor. Backstage wärme ich mich auf. Den Körper mit Dehnungsübungen, und die Sprechmuskulatur, also den Mund am besten auch mit Gähnen. Hier ein Tipp für Dich. Stell Dir einfach vor, du bist der König der Tiere, ein Löwe, der sich räkelt und mit schläfrigem Blick die Gegend absucht. Dabei reißt Du den Mund auf und lässt ein grollendes Gähnen aus der Tiefe Deiner Kehle hervor. Aber bitte Vorsicht beim Gähnen. Nicht zu wild, damit Du Dir den Kiefer nicht ausrenkst.
