This week we talk rodeo, ranch life, and the outdoors with PRCA Pro Rodeo Saddle Bronc current World Leader Sage Newman. Hear where you'll find him when not in the arena. Back to school, we share why not to put the fishing poles away plus we tackle news. AND before you head out on that dream backcountry hunting trip - you need to hear this story and the tips learned from experience. This is Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with the radio show The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle! Episode 148 Details Labor Day Weekend!! For some, it rings the end of Summer…One last family campout or lake weekend before winterizing everything if you live here in a true four seasons climate. For others, especially those of us into archery, it rings in the beginning of that hunting season as almost across the country as a whole; whether it be deer to the western rugged states with elk, the scouting has truly kicked off, packs are loaded and hikes to stands or blinds is on… AND FOR THOSE we wish you a SUCCESSFUL but most importantly Memorable Season! SPOTLIGHT Pack Horses Miraculously Survive 80-Foot Fall from Wilderness Trail “Alone” alumni Cade Cole and Jordan Jonas had a seriously close call when three of their packhorses tumbled off the trail and into the steep timber According to Outdoor Life, Seasoned outdoorsmen, Cade Cole & Jordan Jonas with horse-packing experience were on their way to meet a group of clients for a survival course at the time of the accident. (Jonas, who won Season 6 of “Alone,” hosts survival and backcountry skills courses.) The horses were loaded down with cookware, camping gear, and other equipment. The area they were riding to was so remote, that the clients were flown in on a bush plane while the guides made the 32-mile trek in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness on the Montana-Idaho border. And like many of us with horses, they are like members of one's family. Luckily at the time of the horses' horrific fall, neither rider was atop their mounts. One of the horses acted up crossing a steep area, with a washout on a trail causing all three horses tied to one another to tumble. The men were able to with the use of rope lines climb down to the horses and quickly using their survival skills make ties and pulleys to secure two of the horses caught, rolling the horses back onto their feet to slide down to get their footing. Miraculously none of the horses were hurt. But this is a GREAT reminder for all who have dreamt of exploring the backcountry. The importance of staying calm in a stressful situation, not just for one's own safety but to keep the animals calm as well. Think clearly. We are happy this pair and their mounts survived however watching the video is extreme. If you go to thebendshow.com; you'll see some of the footage that Jordan Jonas caught on camera of the horses falling, beware it is graphic. And again, do your diligence and be prepared beyond for all unknowns when heading out this fall into the backcountry on foot or using pack horses and mules. BEC shares tips for those who have never attempted hunting or exploring the backcountry, but dreamt of doing so on horseback. The guidance and thoughts shared are very smart and basic. A must-listen! MEET SAGE NEWMAN While BEC was on one of her recent “Catch BEC If You Can” ( #catchBECifyoucan ) adventures, her being a PRCA Pro Rodeo Music Director takes her to some great rodeos which leads to meeting amazing individuals paving the way in the rodeo world. This trip was no different. Sage Newman, Current PRCA World Saddle Bronc Leader on the road to making his 3rd Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) appearance, took time to visit with BEC (aka Rebecca Wanner). We learn there is more to this cowboy than riding broncs and making 8 second rides that score big. Sage Newman hails from Melstone, Montana where he grew up on his family's ranch. When not chasing the next rodeo, this man is found back on the ranch and enjoying the outdoors. He is a humble, genuine man who always has a smile. BEC caught up with Sage after another outstanding performance and in chatting learned what he does when not rodeoing or ranching. Sage Newman is like us, an outdoorsman enjoying the outdoors. Taking advantage of where the road leads such as getting to fish while saddle bronc riding in Alaska to looking forward to archery season now back in Montana. Hunting and fishing, and enjoying the backcountry with family and friends keeps Sage Newman revived and focused for when it's time ‘To Ride.' A great interview that leaves one proud and happy to know there are people like us doing great things, setting examples for the younger generation. He graciously took time to hang too with BEC's nephew Hank Wanner and made sure all of his fellow rodeo pals, fellow PRCA saddle bronc riders signed Hank's cowboy hat as well as shook his hand. Thank you Sage Newman for what you are doing by setting a good example, and being a role model. We here at The Bend Show will definitely be cheering loud for you wherever the road may lead and we will be cheering EXTRA LOUD as you make your way to Vegas for the 2023 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (The NFR!)! YOUTH MAJOR LEAGUE FISHING Did you know that the MLF aka Major League Fishing which includes the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) brand, offers a league just for high school youth? Being a part of this series can set up those interested in becoming a pro or semi-pro or just that fan of fishing all together with skills that will make them Life Long Anglers. And there are prizes of course to boot. BEC is bringing this up as it is growing, especially in the Bass fishing world for colleges and universities to offer scholarships to continue on at a collegiate level. Currently, there are roughly 610 college bass fishing teams within the United States. Examples: Auburn University, Louisiana State University in Shreveport, University of Tennesee, University of Nebraska, Clemson, University of Missouri & Missouri State University, University of Wisconsin, etc Some great food for thought. If your local school does not offer a high school fishing program, consider checking into organizations such as the MLF as an example. There are major tournaments throughout the year, ways to earn points and in hopes of landing oneself on the national level come spring/summer of 2024 where youth are competing for scholarships, boats, gear, and more. Formally tracking rope horse earnings is a relatively new phenomenon. Before the last 12 months, databases like the American Quarter Horse Association's QData could only track rope horse earnings at judged shows, where pedigrees were verified by judges to ensure rampant cheating wasn't fudging the numbers. But in 2022, the AQHA teamed up with the Riata Buckle Stallion Incentive Program to infuse some $2 million into the recorded earnings of rope horses. And, for the first time, the AQHA relied on this magazine's indexing of the horses the Top 15rode at this year's Wrangler National Finals Rodeo to funnel another $1.1 million from rodeo's big show into QData, shifting the all-time earnings list dramatically for team roping horses. But who cares? Why should ropers care if this type of money is tracked on their horses? After all, they're roping for millions in Las Vegas and Fort Worth, and you can't ride papers…can you?In this audio edition of this feature article from The Team Roping Journal's February 2023 issue, host Chelsea Shaffer reads the article to keep you in the know. ---The PhD Equine Nutritionists at Purina Animal Nutrition tackle problems using science. This was not the week Rhen Richard and Jeremy Buhler were expecting to have in Las Vegas at the 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. They've been on fire all year at every level of the game, from Richard's record 10 futurity wins across the American Rope Horse Futurity Association and the Royal Crown events, and the rodeos had been good to them, too, getting a bucket-list win at California Rodeo Salinas, staying consistent in every set up.So when they'd only caught two steers going into Round 8 and had $27,254.95 a man won, they had nothing to lose and everything to gain by going at the steer that Chad Masters and Joseph Harrison had won Round 6 on. Perennial contenders Clay Tryan and Jade Corkill and Coleman Proctor and Logan Medlin had yet to strike in the day money at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo's halfway point, but that changed Dec. 5 when both teams anted up with 3.8-second runs, worth $25,882.42 a man. Their win came on a rough night of team roping, when seven teams—including standings leaders Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira—took a no-time with Nogueira's horse stepping in his loop on a run farther down the arena than normal.Full story, presented by Fast Back Ropes: https://teamropingjournal.com/news/round-5-nfr-team-roping-results/ Hosted on Acast. Jeff Medders, the President of Cowboy Channel, is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday. Growing up on a cattle ranch in southeastern Oklahoma, Medders had a passion for rodeo and all sports in general. He was an all-state football player in 1981 and headed to college to pursue his dream of being a television sportscaster. All was going according to plan until 1989, when he was approached by a Tulsa-based company to host America's Horse, AQHA's new television show on ESPN. Soon after, his hosting role grew to include the Wrangler World of Rodeo and the National Finals Rodeo. Having grown up in Oklahoma and attending the NFR in Oklahoma City every year, it was a dream come true. Over the next two decades, Medders' resume grew by hosting thoroughbred racing and LPGA golf coverage on ESPN, poker, and motorcycle racing on CBS Sports, but nothing tamed his passion for the sport of rodeo and the National Finals Rodeo. Today his company, Geronimo Productions, produces more major cowboy events than any other production company in the nation. Championship Bull Riding on Fox, Cinch High School Rodeo Tour on RFD-TV, and of course, all of the PRCA's events on CBS Sports Network, including the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Jeff Medders has been the television host for over 20 National Finals Rodeos. Martin Saddlery: (888) 308-2386 www.martinsaddlery.com
