Sammie brings the realness we all need when it comes to navigating burnout, balancing (or not balancing) business and motherhood, and leading a team with empathy. Today's conversation is with guests Ladd and Zoey Wahlen, the husband-and-wife duo behind Roots Chips! This is the first time we've had a couple on the podcast together, and their story is such a great example of passion, perseverance, and purpose. From growing potatoes on their farm in Idaho to launching a regenerative, farmer-owned chip brand, Ladd and Zoey are doing business differently. In this episode, we talk about how they took a big idea (that started as a dream!) and turned it into a thriving consumer product, all while raising four kids, running a farm, and making regenerative agriculture a core part of their mission. We also dive into the behind-the-scenes of building a brand from scratch, navigating the challenges of distribution, hiring a strong team, and the reality of balancing (or not balancing) two full-time businesses. In today's episode I dive deep into the importance of giving and receiving constructive criticism. I share my experience raising my two kids and the parallels between parenting different children and training horses, where different approaches are needed for different individuals. In this episode, I outline several key strategies for receiving criticism effectively, including shifting mindset to view feedback as an opportunity rather than an attack, pausing before reacting, and listening for the lesson rather than focusing on delivery. Regarding giving criticism, I share guidance on delivering constructive feedback kindly and directly. This includes leading with empathy, using the feedback sandwich approach (positive-critique-positive), being specific in feedback, and choosing appropriate timing. Today I'm sharing lessons I learned while observing a bald eagle in my parent's horse pasture yesterday. I watched little birds antagonize the eagle as it was minding its own business and it hit me that we need to be the eagle. We don't need to give attention to the people in our life that aren't there to support us and cheer us on. At the same time, we can't be the little birds that are hurting others as they're living their lives. None of us should aspire to be the little birds. The key lesson is that If we mind our own business and keep moving in the direction of our goals without paying attention to the negative, we'll succeed. In this episode, I share my strategy for making the most of trips when I am traveling. I first learned this from my mother when we went on ski trips when I was young. She made sure we used every minute of our time doing something we couldn't do at home. I use that strategy as an adult. When I go on a trip, whether it's for work or fun, I go all in. I want to encourage you to make the most of the opportunity that you have before you. I share tips like how I always stay in a hotel that has a restaurant so I can meet people there, how to be approachable, and how I go to as many events as I can during my time away from home. We're back this week with part two of our discussion with Jeanne Carver! If you didn't have a chance to listen to last week's episode, take a pause and definitely go listen to that. In today's episode, Jeanne dives deeper into the regenerative practices her ranch uses. Jeanne was able to create the first farm group in America to reach the global standards of the Responsible Wool Standard. She shares the processes entailed in becoming part of her farm group and meeting those standards. Jeanne also shares the auditing process for the health of her ranch. Different measurements and metrics are derived from testing and analysis of their equipment and fossil fuel use, methane emissions from livestock, soil, and biomass. These metrics help to inform and guide her to make future business decisions and practices. The information gathered in this testing is huge for the industry as it shows the net positive impact her ranch has in nature with their carbon footprint. This episode helps change the narrative of negative assumptions in animal agriculture, and can help show what the future of agriculture can look like. Welcome to this week's episode of Leaders of the West. Let me tell you guys, you are in for a treat today! We're sitting down with Jeanne Carver. She and her late husband, Dan, started Imperial Stock Ranch. And they also are the brains behind Shaniko Wool Company. She shares the difficult decision they were faced with which then led them to create Shaniko Wool Company and the massive success it has seen including having their wool chosen by Ralph Lauren to be used in the Olympics. I asked if we could record a second episode because there's so much more she's doing for the agriculture industry and we just didn't get to cover it all in this first conversation. Today I want to talk about the importance of having fun. I share my son's journey in rodeoing and going from the top in his age bracket, where he was very competitive, to the bottom of a new age bracket, where he's up against some very handy, tough, and older boys. We take practice and being competitive very seriously in our family, but sometimes it's a fine line between focusing so heavily on winning, that you can lose the element of fun while you do it. Having fun builds confidence and having confidence is what creates that competitive spirit. It all goes hand in hand. So often the things we love doing turn into a job and we lose the element of fun. External factors and stress creep in, and we lose the love because the fun is lost. This episode is a good reminder to ask yourself: are you having fun? On today's episode, I'm talking about something I feel really passionate about: the idea that from the outside looking in, we make assumptions about others' lives, but we have no idea the amount of work people have to put in to get where they are. We see a life other people have and we think they're so lucky. But most of the time, it's not luck. We just see the final product. This episode is about consistency. If you are consistent and you show up every day, you can have the life you're wanting.
