Dr. Dan interviews parenting expert, author, co-host of the Zen Pop Parenting podcast, and longtime friend Cathy Cassani Adams about self-awareness, life transitions, and the evolving journey of parenting. On today's episode, Dr. Dan and Cathy explore parental self-understanding, ways to raise resilient kids, how to listen to your body's cues (your “dashboard”), and ending the myth of perfection in parenting, leadership, and life. Dr. Dan and Cathy also share why authenticity and vulnerability matter and how Cathy's own experiences with grief, family, and creativity led her to redefine success, joy, and contentment – and inspired the evolution of Zen Parenting Radio to the new Zen Pop Parenting podcast. Whether you're a parent, educator, leader, or simply someone navigating life's transitions, this episode will inspire you to lead with compassion, stay grounded in your truth, and embrace the beautiful messiness of the human journey. Today, we're diving into a complex and nuanced topic—raising daughters in today's world. Joining me for this conversation is Cathy Adams, a longtime friend of the pod, powerhouse in the parenting space, and champion of mindful, connected parenting. Her latest book, which takes center stage in today's discussion, is Restoring Our Girls: How Real Conversations Shape Our Daughters' Lives, Help Them with Teen Challenges, and Remind Them That They Matter. With her background as a clinical social worker, certified parent coach, and former child and family therapist—as well as her experience as a mom of three daughters and university professor—Cathy brings a rich, multifaceted perspective to this important topic. In this episode, Cathy and I explore the unique challenges girls face today, from societal pressures and cultural conditioning to navigating a fast-paced, often judgmental world. We discuss the importance of parents addressing their own emotional baggage, being mindful of their reactions, and recognizing how fear can hold us back from having the messy but meaningful conversations our daughters need. Cathy also shares strategies for creating judgment-free spaces where girls feel heard, validated, and supported in becoming their authentic selves. About Cathy Adams Cathy Cassani Adams, LCSW, co-hosts the long-running Zen Parenting Radio podcast and founded the Zen Parenting Conference in Chicago. She is the author of Zen Parenting and Living What You Want Your Kids to Learn (both Nautilus Award and International Book Award winners) and her upcoming 2025 release, Restoring Our Girls. She previously worked as a Child and Family Therapist and Clinical Educator at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and now teaches in the Sociology and Criminology Department at Dominican University. She lives outside Chicago with her husband, Todd, and their three daughters. Things you'll learn How cultural conditioning and societal expectations on girls can impact them (and what we need to know about it) Why parents must address their own emotional baggage to avoid projecting it onto their children How being mindful of our own reactions in the moment will help us communicate more effectively with our children The role fear plays in preventing meaningful conversations which leads to missed connection opportunities The benefits of engaging in messy and imperfect conversations for promoting authenticity How to create a judgment-free space where girls feel heard and validated to support their emotional growth Resources Zen Parenting website and resources Restoring Our Girls: How Real Conversations Shape Our Daughters' Lives, Help Them with Teen Challenges, and Remind Them That They Matter by Cathy Adams Zen Parenting: Caring for Ourselves and Our Children in an Unpredictable World by Cathy Adams Zen Parenting 2025 Summit Zen Parenting on Instagram Cathy Adams on Zen Parenting & Caring for Ourselves and Our Children in an Unpredictable World (Tilt Parenting podcast) Zen Parenting on Facebook Zen Parenting Radio podcast Getting Aligned Through Parenting and Marriage Challenges, with Zen Parenting's Cathy and Todd Adams (Tilt Parenting podcast) Pop Culturing Podcast Rescuing Our Sons: 8 Solutions to Our Crisis of Disaffected Teen Boys by Dr. John Duffy Learn more about your ad choices. That's my big message, especially to moms. Sometimes we use a lot of words to describe where we're at – ‘I'm such a mess. I'm so cluttered. I'm so overwhelmed.' But if you really start to put it out there, it comes down to fear. I love my child and I also really wanna have something for myself too. This is a very normal human experience and the more we normalize it and the more we recognize that the majority of people feel that way – that self-compassion piece of common humanity - we're like oh, we're not wrong.” – Cathy Adams REGISTER FOR THE FREE MOM BRAIN MASTERCLASS – Powerful Strategies for Anxiety, Overwhelm, & Burnout TAKE THE PERSONALITY PATTERN QUIZ! There is a resistance for people to ask difficult questions. Fear of the answer. That they can't "fix" it. Fear that the answer will be really uncomfortable. You may find yourself alone in your postpartum feelings. Those unmarketable feelings. Because people around you are scared to ask you, "How are you doing?" You may be like me and not want to tell your partner or mom your feelings because they love to "fix" the problem. Tell you solutions, their experiences, because they cannot bear to see you unhappy. It's time to find the courage to have uncomfortable conversations and find the people that can handle them. Along with giving grace to the people that may not be able to handle them. How? This episode is sponsored by Better Help and was originally released on Zen Parenting Radio. Here's a scary thought: fully-grown adults are susceptible to cults, or cult-adjacent behavior (there is truly cultish influence all around us in politics, wellness communities, and so on). So imagine how dangerous this whole world is for children, who are far less likely to have the wherewithal to identify and refute coercive persuasion. If you're one of our regular listeners, you already know how ubiquitous this shit is (unfortunately); so what can we do to protect our youth? Well, that's exactly what we got into with our friends over at Zen Parenting Radio, where Cathy Cassani Adams (a self proclaimed “spiritual and emotional mom”) and Todd Adams (“a logical and practical dad'') get into all things parenting. On their show, we not only recount our own story with NXIVM (perhaps you've heard about, read about, or seen it by now?), but also the importance of talking to kids about how relationships that might initially feel exciting or just “good” in some way—friends, coaches, teachers, bosses, etc.—can quickly pivot into something abusive. How can we teach kids to identify culty behavior and help them feel safe enough to ask for help? This one's for anyone who believes we need to keep our kids safe from evil, shitty shitheads. This episode explores the subject of vulnerability, male culture, and parenting specifically in the context of heteronormative relationships and how men can show up as better dads to their differently wired children. And I have the perfect guest to explore this topic with — Todd Adams, half of the duo of Zen Parenting Radio, and a leadership coach for men and the executive director of the international men's organization, Men Living. Todd and I looked at the societal norms and pressures on men that get in the way of their being vulnerable in their relationships, feel more connected at home, and hold emotional space for their families, especially in families with neurodivergent kids and where the demands on relationships (emotionally, mentally, and physically) may be more intense. We also talked about what women can do to support and encourage their male partners to do inner work and show up as dads in a way that will better support their relationships and their family as a whole. Things you'll learn from this episodeWhat the a “man box” is (and how it differs from “toxic masculinity”)The barriers in a heteronormative relationship that stand in the way of men feeling connected, including the additional challenges when raising a differently wired childHow families can benefit from men showing up and being more vulnerable in their relationshipsWhat women can do to encourage their male partners to do the work and how they can support them through itHow dads can find other like-minded dads and connect with themResources mentioned for dads, the "man box" and how men can better show up for their kids and familiesMen LivingZen Parenting Radio (Todd and Cathy Adams' podcast)Todd Adam's Coaching SiteGetting Aligned Through Parenting and Marriage Challenges, with Todd and Cathy Adams (Tilt Parenting Podcast)Cathy Adams on Zen Parenting in an Unpredictable WorldThe ManKind ProjectThe Mask You Live InJennifer Siebel NewsomA New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose by Eckert Tolle Support the showConnect with Tilt Parenting Visit Tilt Parenting Take the free 7-Day Challenge Read a chapter of Differently Wired Follow Tilt on Twitter & Instagram
This week we will be talk about intuition and how we can learn to tune into and trust ourselves as parents and partners and create that beautiful relationship with ourselves as individuals. For many of us, our experiences out in the world have taught us to look outside of ourselves for answers, feedback, validation, and wisdom. Has that been your experience? It definitely has been mine! For me, conscious parenting more than tips, trick, and scripts has been about learning to tune out the noise and tune IN to myself and my child. That's what I want to share with you today!! To help me in this conversation, I brought in a colleague, Cathy Cassani Adams, LCSW. She is a co-host of Zen Parenting Radio (one of my favorite podcasts!) and the author of Zen Parenting: Caring for Ourselves and Our Children in an Unpredictable World. She is a social worker, certified parent coach, former elementary school educator, and yoga teacher. There is no such thing as a perfect parent. Neither my guest or I would ever claim to be and in fact, we both agree that parenting can be looked at as a “practice” versus something we are striving to be “perfect” at. My guest is Cathy Cassani Adams who is the author of “Zen Parenting - Caring for Ourselves and Our Children in an Unpredictable World.” We talk about the meaning of Zen Parenting and that, in the simplest of terms, means to have an awareness of reality; what's really going on, and acceptance of what IS. I love it when Cathy talks about how two things can be true. For example, that we can love being with our kids and also miss working and being with adults. I think that knowing we can be both allows us to leave shame and judgement of ourselves at the door!
