Three CEOs, one podcast. Today's guests are Todd Adams, CEO of Alloya Corporate Federal Credit Union, Gary Swindler, CEO of Washington State Employees Credit Union, and Seth Brickman, CEO of QCash.  What's the occasion? Alloya has bought QCash which had been a CUSO founded by WSECU which also was its only investor. This is big news. QCash is doing fascinating work that also happens to be at the core of the credit union mission. It is putting money in the hands of members who have experienced a life event – a blown car engine, a medical bill, maybe an emergency vet bill. Lots of events pop up and a huge percentage of Americans just don't have the cash on hand to cope. Enter QCash which can get money in a member's hands literally in seconds.   The loan does not hinge on a FICO score.  In the show Brickman explain how QCash makes a decision on a loan application – it's sophisticated, it's fast, but it also aims to fund as many loans as it can within the limits of financial prudence. Adams is on the show to explain why Alloya – and you know the corporate credit union reputation as stodgy dinosaurs – entered a bidding war for QCash and moved fast enough to snare the prize.  Adams tells also about the ambitious plans for Alloya which already claims around 25% of credit unions as members. Swindler is here to offer some history of QCash and also to explain why the CUSO was spun out of WSECU. There are three shows in the archives that explore QCash.  A 2022 show with Inclusiv on its deal with QCash.   A 2022 show with Brickman on his plans for QCash.   And a 2019 show with Ben Morales, a prior CEO of QCash.   If you find the introductory first minute or two confusing, know that you will find the explanatory info you need in the 2022 Brickman podcast. This is a lively show – and pay attention fintech founders because QCash had multiple suitors vying for a wedding.   Listen up.

In 2021, the U.S. life expectancy was about 73 years for men and about 79 years for women – the biggest gap in a quarter-century. Boys and men at every age are at higher risk of death than girls and women, according to the CDC. Some people point to biological factors — like high levels of testosterone weakening the immune system — while others point to social factors such as masculinity and a lack of support. Reset discusses what's behind the growing longevity gap between men and women, and what can be done to improve physical and mental health outcomes among men. We talked to Dr. Omer Raheem from the University of Chicago, Dr. Sam Wainwright from UI Health, Todd Adams, executive director of MenLiving and Erik Treese and Mervin Colin Canham from the ManKind Project.

This episode is sponsored by Better Help and was originally released on Zen Parenting Radio. Here's a scary thought: fully-grown adults are susceptible to cults, or cult-adjacent behavior (there is truly cultish influence all around us in politics, wellness communities, and so on). So imagine how dangerous this whole world is for children, who are far less likely to have the wherewithal to identify and refute coercive persuasion. If you're one of our regular listeners, you already know how ubiquitous this shit is (unfortunately); so what can we do to protect our youth?  Well, that's exactly what we got into with our friends over at Zen Parenting Radio, where Cathy Cassani Adams (a self proclaimed “spiritual and emotional mom”) and Todd Adams (“a logical and practical dad'') get into all things parenting. On their show, we not only recount our own story with NXIVM (perhaps you've heard about, read about, or seen it by now?), but also the importance of talking to kids about how relationships that might initially feel exciting or just “good” in some way—friends, coaches, teachers, bosses, etc.—can quickly pivot into something abusive. How can we teach kids to identify culty behavior and help them feel safe enough to ask for help?  This one's for anyone who believes we need to keep our kids safe from evil, shitty shitheads. This episode explores the subject of vulnerability, male culture, and parenting specifically in the context of heteronormative relationships and how men can show up as better dads to their differently wired children. And I have the perfect guest to explore this topic with — Todd Adams, half of the duo of Zen Parenting Radio, and a leadership coach for men and the executive director of the international men's organization, Men Living. Todd and I looked at the societal norms and pressures on men that get in the way of their being vulnerable in their relationships, feel more connected at home, and hold emotional space for their families, especially in families with neurodivergent kids and where the demands on relationships (emotionally, mentally, and physically) may be more intense. We also talked about what women can do to support and encourage their male partners to do inner work and show up as dads in a way that will better support their relationships and their family as a whole. Things you'll learn from this episodeWhat the a “man box” is (and how it differs from “toxic masculinity”)The barriers in a heteronormative relationship that stand in the way of men feeling connected, including the additional challenges when raising a differently wired childHow families can benefit from men showing up and being more vulnerable in their relationshipsWhat women can do to encourage their male partners to do the work and how they can support them through itHow dads can find other like-minded dads and connect with themResources mentioned for dads, the "man box" and how men can better show up for their kids and familiesMen LivingZen Parenting Radio (Todd and Cathy Adams' podcast)Todd Adam's Coaching SiteGetting Aligned Through Parenting and Marriage Challenges, with Todd and Cathy Adams (Tilt Parenting Podcast)Cathy Adams on Zen Parenting in an Unpredictable WorldThe ManKind ProjectThe Mask You Live InJennifer Siebel NewsomA New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose by Eckert Tolle Support the showConnect with Tilt Parenting Visit Tilt Parenting Take the free 7-Day Challenge Read a chapter of Differently Wired Follow Tilt on Twitter & Instagram

My guest today is Todd Adams.  Todd and Casey talk about raising young, straight, cis-gendered, white men and how to balance teaching them about the responsibility that comes with their privilege without over-burdening them.  They discuss what it means to “be a man” and how to nurture a young man's emotional intelligence & the importance of modeling.  Todd shares how important it is for parents to be self-aware, curious, and willing to learn.  He gives strategies for connecting with and calling-in teenagers and why to connect when they're ready.  Casey and Todd remind us that there's not a perfect script, but an ongoing conversation, when it comes to tough topics like consent, substance use, & being advocates.  Todd wraps up by talking about what healthy masculinity and “mature masculinity” look like to him.   Takeaways from the show Raising teenagers is messy- especially right now.  What is privilege?  What does it mean to “be a man?”  What are the men in your home modeling for your teens?  What do boys need from their parents?  What are ways to call-in & connect with teens?  It's natural for kids to pull away from us in their teen years.  There's no script for tough topics with teens like consent & being advocates - it's an ongoing conversation.   What is healthy masculinity?    For more see our website here.

As a parent, do you see raising your kids as an opportunity to improve yourself?  Does being a parent help or force you to change the behavior you want to model for your kids? Todd Adams is a regular dad trying to do extraordinary things.  While maintaining a full-time career, he and his wife, Cathy, started Zen Parenting Radio over 11 years ago.  A podcast that helps expand compassion through the lens of a spiritual & emotional mom and a logical & practical dad. But being a dad, Todd wanted to focus and help other dads be better.  So after a long weekend with a group of his guy friends, Todd launched Men Living, a non-profit committed to improving men's lives through connection. A consistent topic among parenting and health experts I speak with is that modeling the behaviors we want our kids to see starts with self-awareness.  The ability to take our own temperature and realize what direction the pendulum of life is currently swinging in is a critical first step in self-awareness.  As Todd points out, we need to pause and notice events without judgment.  To develop the ability to lay down our defenses and realize that our spouses or partners are here to help us. Finally, we touch on the hot topic that all parents are dealing with: how to manage electronic devices with our kids.  Todd lays out three steps he has learned and uses with his three daughters, which could help you and your family.  Spoiler alert, the key is to be flexible. Please enjoy my conversation with Todd Adams. For show notes and resources discussed in this episode, visit tammacapital.com/80. For more episodes, go to tammacapital.com/podcast. Gears. Bearings. Conveyors. Drainage systems. Plumbing fixtures. Not what you first think of when it comes to innovation - but areas that maybe even more affected by innovation that all those tech companies that we normally think about. Why? Because while we often associate coming up with a new idea as the hard part of innovation, transforming existing industries can be even harder. It’s the real world for most of us.Today’s guest, Todd Adams, is the CEO of Rexnord, one of the real world companies driving innovation across several different industries. But like many successful leaders, he never imagined himself in that role. As he revealed during our conversation: “I never aspired to be CEO. I wanted to contribute to the success of an organization and learn along the way”Whether you want to be a CEO or not, Todd has some great advice about how you should go about any opportunity. “Make sure you want to do things for the right reason. People sometimes aspire to roles because they want the title, the recognition, the money...but you actually have to love the job”If you take away one piece of career advice from all the episodes we’ve done so far, that might just be the best. You can follow the podcast and host Chuck Swoboda on Twitter for further exploration and discussion on innovation. The episode is also available wherever else you listen to podcasts. Todd Adams is a professor of physics at Florida State University, and a member of the High Energy Physics Group that is working on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland. He joins the show to discuss the details of this fascinating work, such as the following: How gravitational lensing allows for the estimation of the mass of unseen objects, and how this is used to investigate dark matter In what ways the standard model of particle physics fails to address critical questions and observations in physics What WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles) are and why Adams is hoping to produce them in the proton-proton collisions taking place in the Large Hadron Collider The Large Hadron Collider is the “world's largest scientific experiment,” says Adams. It is a particle accelerator that was built underground in Geneva, Switzerland, and is about 17 miles in circumference. It accelerates protons in a circle at a speed close to that of light, with the purpose of observing what happens when protons collide. These collisions are the highest energy collisions ever created in a lab. As many people know from the famous equation E= MC2, energy can be converted to mass, which is the goal at the Hadron Collider; the creation and study of new particles from these high-energy collisions. Adams explains the details of the CMS experiment, which uses a detector five stories in height and 12,000 tons in weight that's designed to detect the particles produced by the high-energy collision of protons. Once the particles have been identified, the goal is to reconstruct precisely what happened at the time of the collision. So, what's the ultimate purpose of these experiments? Adams explains that the standard model of particle physics does an excellent job of explaining most of what we see in the world, but it leaves some compelling questions and observations unanswered, namely what's called “dark matter.” One theory to explain dark matter is the presence of a particle that doesn't interact like normal matter in that it does not interact with light, with the exception of the gravitational effects of light. Adams also discusses why it becomes harder to accelerate a particle to higher velocities as the particle approaches the speed of light, how protons are brought to such high speeds, the importance of the search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), the significance of the Higgs boson, the uncertainty principle from quantum physics, and so much more. Some takeaway points from this podcast are: -Parenting is "simple... but not easy" -Steve provides a really bad sports analogy -How to handle not becoming "offended" when a child yells back at you or disrespects the parent -We spend a good bit of time talking about the partnership of parents and how important that is, and also how to manage that relationship in a healthy way Steve's Aftershow Deep Thoughts: Oddly (but not so oddly), I walked away from this interview noticing a parallel between 'Parenting Podcasts' and 'Business Management Podcasts' because they both share the same language and structure. Both topics are about empowering the individual who is being managed to be free and creative but yet there is always a need for safe boundaries. Both topics tackle the issue of establishing order. Both topics understand that a reward system is necessary. Both topics understand that discipline must be catered to foster learning from the example (the fear of punishment is a powerful motivator to curb behaviors but not so much a motivator to be innovative). Management and parenting may just be one in the same. Is there a relationship between how we treat children and how we treat adults? Are there universal behaviors and treatments that can be gleaned from one topic and transferred to the other topic? Obviously, I will concede that this may not always be the case (diaper changing for example) but in most situations you can transfer a success/failure example in the parenting realm and achieve a relative success/failure in the business realm. It certainly is worth noting and experimenting with in your personal life.  Until next time... take care.  Steve
