Alta DeRoo, MD, MBA, FACOG, DFASAM, joins host, Zach, to talk about her experience in the US Navy (USN) and her path to practicing OBGYN and addiction medicine. She discusses the intersection of general medicine or primary specialty practice and addiction and shares her perspectives on stigma related to addiction. Dr. DeRoo explains the potential challenges of transitioning from active duty to veteran status and how these can sometimes lead to substance use, addiction, or mental health issues. Finally, she shares what inspired (and continues to inspire) her sense of service and offers advice to the next generation of addiction medicine specialists. Dr. DeRoo's father was active-duty Navy when she was born on Midway Island in the South Pacific. A sense of service was branded in her character, and after earning a BA in psychology from Connecticut College, she joined the Navy and served for 24 years. She was selected for combat Naval Aviation and was among the first cohort of women to fly in combat. Dr. DeRoo was the first female in her community of the E2C Hawkeye, a carrier airborne early warning plane. (They have a short cameo in Top Gun, but you would not see Mav flying her plane.) After 8 years of aviation and over 40 combat missions, Dr. DeRoo was awarded a scholarship to attend medical school. After graduating from the University of Florida College of Medicine, she completed residency in OBGYN. She completed several missions, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and 5 deployments on the USNS Mercy performing surgeries in Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines, and she was the mission commander of a Papua, New Guinea mission. Dr. DeRoo became very aware of the alcohol and drugs that sailors and soldiers used on deployment (for various reasons). Her father was also one of these sailors who eventually developed alcohol use disorder. From his stories and the stories of her shipmates and battle buddies, she became very interested in the science of addiction. Her Commanding Officer at the time allowed her to moonlight at a nearby methadone clinic, which was the beginning of her career in addiction medicine. Dr. DeRoo later became board certified in addiction medicine and practiced both OBGYN and addiction medicine. She retired from the USN to Culpeper, VA, where she started the county's first ever OBOT with their Community Services Board, started treating pregnant women with SUD, and incorporated this into a clinic in her town. Through aggressive naloxone distribution and OUD treatment, they were able to decrease their opioid overdose rate between 2016-2018. It was during this time Dr. DeRoo also became interested in the Virginia Chapter of ASAM. She served as secretary for two years, then president elect in 2020. The only thing that drew her away from serving as president in 2020 was a job opportunity that, to her, was a calling. She was asked to be the medical director of the Betty Ford Center and all California sites. She made dramatic changes there and was promoted to chief medical officer of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and their 16 sites across the US. During this time, she also earned an MBA from the University of Virginia and became a Distinguished Fellow of ASAM.   Virginia Society of Addiction Medicine (VASAM) American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation Distinguished Fellows of ASAM (DFASAM) If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, you are not alone. Treatment is available and recovery is possible. Visit ASAM's Patient Resources page for more information. The information shared in this podcast episode is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. This episode, and a few of the upcoming episodes are going to be special in that I am doing interviews of Horror Writer Association, Virginia Chapter members. I have been a member of that association for quite a long time now, as far as being a member of anything goes and I am happy to say that it has me pretty busy working with other authors on a bunch of different things. It is that association which put me in contact with so many interesting people and I have been super fortunate to make some pretty long lasting friendships in the process. One of the things we do is have a chapter table at various events where we get to talk about how the HWA is an international organization dedicated to horror and really is the only one of its kind anywhere. You don't have to be a horror writer. You can be a supporting member if you just really like horror and hanging around horror authors. So, it should not shock anyone that my next guest is a member of that organization with a pretty interesting tale to tell not just about horror, but he is a multi-genre author like I am. Want to know more, check out this episode where we talk with author Sidney Williams. We are going to talk about all kinds of things; His history and the wide depth and breadth of things he has done. His favorite thing to teach.Three things every writer should know or do to make their writing stronger? His influences. His favorite horror novel and How about movie? What did he fall in love with first and how did his other interests come along? He'll tell us about Fools Run, his latest book and the follow-on book.Visit Sidney online at https://SidisAlive.com Facebook: https://facebook.com/SidneyWilliamsBooksTwitter: @Sidney_WilliamsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/sidney_williams/ Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/Bryanthewriter)

The proposal is for a 2,500 square foot manufacturing buildings with 13 dwelling units. The project is being submitted by-right. “[That] means that if the proposed plans meet the minimum requirements of the county’s zoning, site plan, or subdivision ordinances, they must be approved,” reads the public notification for the project. The county’s Comprehensive Plan designates the land as Neighborhood Density Residential which calls for between three and six units per acre. According to the project application, the residential density on the site be 9.55 units per acre. An existing structure on the property would remain. This is within the scope of the county’s Broadway Blueprint planning area. That’s being run by the county’s Economic Development Office. Elsewhere in the county, plans have been filed for 250 units along Rio Road near Four Seasons. Andy Reitelbach is a senior planner with the county. “So the application is called the Heritage on Rio,” Retelbach said. The property is within the jurisdiction of the Places29-Hydraulic Community Advisory Committee, which had a community meeting on a rezoning application for the project on October 18. “Sometimes the current zoning and the future land use designation do not always line up so that is one reason why a property owner may choose to request a rezoning of their property,” Reitelbach said. In this case, the request is to go from R-6 zoning to a customized zone known as a Planned Residential Development. That would allow up to 35 units per acre as well as some commercial uses. The buildings have not been designed, according to attorney Valerie Long with the firm Williams Mullen. The Architectural Review Board will also weigh in on the project as Rio Road is an entrance corridor. “The project is proposing that 15 percent of the rezoned units will be affordable to those making up to 80 percent of the area median income,” Long said. By-right there could be 50 units on the property, so that translates to 15 percent of 200, or 30 units. The Places29-North Community Advisory Committee met on October 14 and one topic was an update on the Brookhill development south of Forest Lakes and north of Polo Grounds Road. Cameron Langille is another planner in Albemarle. (watch the meeting)“Brookhill was rezoned by the Board of Supervisors in 2016,” Langille said. “Brookhill totals 277.5 acres so it is a pretty large project. It’s going to be developed in multiple phases and the rezoning referred to each of those phases as blocks.”Brookhill is a mixed-use development that must have at least 552 residential units and a maximum of 1,550 units. These include apartments, townhomes, and single-family homes. Langille said the developer could have constructed many more under the Comprehensive Plan but opted to go at a lower density. Final approval so far has been granted for 535 total dwelling unitsBlock 1 is the center of the development. “There’s going to be also a public park and a plaza gathering area, and that is going to be the primary focal point for non-residential uses in this project,” Langille said. Some blocks have been approved and constructed, while others are working their way through the review process. Block 8A consists of a 179-bed assisted living facility which is nearing opening. Block 1A and Block 8B consist of multifamily units that look like townhomes but contain more units. A site plan had been submitted for a hockey rink in the town center. “That plan got to the final site plan stage which is basically the last thing they have to do application wise before they get final approval,” Langille said. “We were reviewing that back in 2018 and from what the developer has told me it’s not going to be build in that block any longer. They are still working with the folks who are looking to do that ice rink and they are potentially going to relocate it a little further north on the north side of the town center area.”Allison Wrabel of the Daily Progress reported in February 2020 that the park had been delayed. A group called Friends of the Charlottesville Ice Park had been fundraising for the project. The website for the group has expired. Special announcement of a continuing promo with Ting! On this episode of Caregivers Stories Podcast, Kimberly interviews Jane Marks, former Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia chapter and currently running the website SandwichCaring.com. For 21 years she offered her expertise in running non-profit organizations and transforming complicated sets of circumstances into a person-centered solution. When she started working at the Alzheimer's Association, she became immersed in the world of dementia and got the chance to work along with caregivers and medical practitioners. But after 13 years of serving, she retired from her post, for she needed to take care of her mother as her illness progressed. She shared that just like all those who were diagnosed with dementia, her mother wasn't following any set pattern, but she noticed some changes, and at that time, a newly coined term was given for her condition: mild cognitive impairment. During one of the seminars that she attended, she was able to talk to a neurologist who encouraged her to have her mother checked. When they did, they found out that she had Parkinson's with some form of dementia. Jane did not know that her mother felt the tremors internally. Her handwriting changed, she started to have some balance issues, her voice had gotten much softer, and at that time, she did not know that these were all symptoms of Parkinson's. This was when she learned that one of the biggest misconceptions about dementia is that you have to have a specific diagnosis and have a similar set of pattern to be able to tell that one has dementia. As one of the broadest and complex diseases, our philosophy should be changed from following just one set of guidelines, to dealing with whatever manifestation is showing. We need to get rid of the idea that everybody is going to go through a similar pattern because there aren’t any stages and everybody will have a different set of experience. Caregivers and the family members should assess carefully on what will work for their loved one who is diagnosed because what might work for others might not work for them. She also pointed out that even though when things will get really tough, one should never forget to take care of oneself because to fully take care of someone, we need to take care of ourselves too. Often caregivers ignore the fact that they too are experiencing trauma. Disregarding mental health can cause a lot of problems and would eventually cause a hindrance from fully functioning. It would be best to always check on yourself, to not be ashamed of admitting that you too are going through a tough time and you need help. The following was shared with the podcast by Taylor Proffitt, and read by me, your host, Scott Mann. You can find out more about Taylor's work at NuMundo.org or NewEarthFarm.org. Onel is a Haitian Farmer currently spending the late summer, early fall growing season between Virginia Beach, Virginia, and New York City, New York, studying abroad with his friends and mentors at Community Development International. After growing up in the Haitian countryside, Onel moved to Port-au-Prince to attend Universite d'Americaines des Sciences Modernes d'Haiti. He has since built an all-natural chemical-free tropical fruit tree nursery and education center. He teaches students, farmers, and community members how to grow low cost, highly productive, perennial food forests. He currently grows 5,000 fruit trees in the nursery that he actively gives to his community to help people create more food sovereignty. Onel is a grateful, humble, highly educated, quadrilingual (French, Creole, English, and Spanish) Haitian who is extremely privileged in relation to the majority of his fellow citizens. The New Earth Farm, where I work, is one of the farms where Onel is apprenticing in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I took Onel out to see what I do for fun this past weekend. We went to the food share of the Norfolk, Virginia Chapter of Food Not Bombs (FNB). At FNB a large, organic, vegan feast is shared with underserved, undernourished, mentally handicapped, homeless, and otherwise hungry people. Onel had never been to one of these food shares, but was fascinated with the idea. We cooked organic food from the farm for those in need of nutrition in the food desert neighborhood where we serve in Norfolk, Virginia, at 19th and Omohundro near the arts district. I knew Onel would have fun at Food Not Bombs after explaining to me the details of the wealth gap in Haiti at lunch one day. On top of a large juice bottle he demonstrated where the rich people of the capital city, Port-au-Prince, live. At the bottom of the bottle, his phone represented the poor, and a small box nearly the same size represented the middle class, in the rural countryside. “Haiti is the poorest country in the northern hemisphere” and “Two and a half million Haitians live in extreme poverty.” Onel explained how the recent history of Haiti has been a whirlwind, politically. In 1990, the poor and the middle class came together to elect Jean-Bertrand Aristide, an unpopular figure among wealthy Haitians. After Jean-Bertrand won the presidency the wealthy came to a popular young Haitian named Guy Phillipe, who visited and campaigned with all of the universities and promised to bring money and prosperity to young people in exchange for their support. He was convinced by the wealthy to overthrow Jean-Bertrand. Jean-Bertrand was threatened by the “paramilitary leader Guy Philippe, a former Haitian police chief who was trained by US Special Forces in Ecuador in the early 1990s” and exiled to Central African Republic. The poor finally had a voice through Aristide, but then he was gone. When they needed him most, in 2010, a 7.0 magnitude Earthquake shattered any remaining hope for the under-privileged of Haiti, but Jean-Bertrand was powerless. His life was threatened and he could do nothing when disaster struck. Remember the “text to donate” Red Cross PR campaign? That money never made it to Haiti. It didn't go to the Wealthy, it didn't go to rebuild Haiti. It stayed in the United States, in the pockets of the Red Cross. If you go to Haiti today, you see a nice capital city rebuilt by the wealthy class and some of the funds from the Red Cross. In the countryside, however, the socioeconomic contrast is like night and day. The serious epidemics of poverty and malnutrition continue. Dead bodies lie in the street. Deforested land stretches for miles. With this recent history in mind, Onel could not understand how homeless and hungry people still exist in America. America is a rich country. Couldn't the rich people take these poor and buy them a home or provide some place to live? And what about all the food in the grocery store dumpsters? Aren't there more than enough wealthy people in the Unites States to take care of everyone? Onel was right. Why do we have poor people in America? In the last century there haven't been any civil wars, government coups, or massive natural disasters that crippled the entire country or economy. If more than enough resources exist to go around, why aren't they going around? Why is the economic distribution in the United States nearly exactly the same as it is in Haiti? While the answers to these questions are obvious and not surprising, these rhetorical questions leave a dark space that is the shadow of our culture. Onel asked valid questions. The United States gets portrayed as the promised land, even to this day, to the rest of the world. I explained that people here in the land of opportunity hold greed in their hearts, too. I explained that grocery stores prefer to throw perfectly edible food in a locked trash can than give it away to hungry mouths. I explained that the rich people would rather buy their next Mercedes-Benz or Yacht than concern themselves with the problems of the lower class's health care. I explained that we still live in a country full of slaves, but we call them different names. We call them “the poor”. We call them “minorities”. We call them “under privileged”. We call them the victims of trauma and mental illness, when in fact these are merely symptoms of the illness we face as a whole that is consumer and throw away culture. When I speak with Onel, we often exclaim our mutual despair for the challenges we face as humanitarians and community builders. This sadness propels us to make small changes in underserved people's lives each day, as well as in our own lives. In permaculture the problem is often reframed as the opportunity for a solution, and both Onel and myself became and remain great friends for this reason. We actively seek ways to initiate these solutions in a world where problems exist in great numbers while the simple effective solutions exist, but get implemented by so few. We implement solutions within ourselves first before reaching out to help our community. For Onel, the challenges he faces in Haiti include deforestation, caused from an overactive lumber industry which cut down the biodiverse rainforests of rural haiti in a drastic effort to make money; hunger; economic scarcity; and a corrupt political system. By educating youth about the importance of organic food production, teaching his community how to turn fruit seeds into fruit trees, and donating plants from his home grown nursery, he overgrows the forces of ecological and economic oppression, one tree at a time. Each time he teaches a child how to grow a fruit trees, he creates food and livelihood for his students. Each tree his students plant feeds hungry people, reforests the island, contributes to plant and animal biodiversity, sequesters carbon, offers a valuable education, and leaves a legacy. For myself, the challenges I face in the Unites States include deforestation caused by phenomena called lawns and overgrazing; hunger; economic scarcity; and a corrupt political system. By working with local organic farms to access fresh, organic food, which I give to hungry people in the city, I overgrow many of these problems with organic, grassroots solutions, in the same way as Onel. By turning people's lawns into organic gardens, I help to reforest one small plot at a time. By hosting a Really, Really Free market at the community peace garden, my friends and I help close the wealth gap, one winter coat and one empowering book at a time. The inspiration in this story comes from the shared resiliency and solidarity that happens across borders, climates, language barriers, and cultural norms. Our two stories coalesced when we met and the convergence opened my mind to the possibilities of real, organic solutions relevant to each bioregion. Our solutions vary widely, but we face nearly identical challenges, and this story offers proof that no universal “cure” exists for world hunger or poverty. Organic solutions exist for every bioregion and the sooner we come together as a global community to enact these customized solutions, the closer we come to uprooting the oppression of our patriarchally dominated global mindset. Our use of permaculture principles, neither of us call it that when talking to each other, gives us hope and inspiration to change the world around us, and to actively empower those who need help in our communities.
