TCW Podcast Episode 255 - The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind After Arena and Daggerfall's triumphs, Julian LeFay's Battlespire spinoff marked his last hand in the Elder Scrolls universe. Amid conflicts while working on other projects, LeFay left. Ted Peterson had already departed after Daggerfall. This left Bethesda Softworks with none of the original creators for the next Elder Scrolls. Development stalled amid Bethesda turmoil, spawning Redguard which introduced the Pocket Guide to the Empire, an unreliable in-universe narrator that sowed mystery and deep worldbuilding for Tamriel's forged empire. New lead Todd Howard ditched procedural generation for handcrafted openness where everything interacted. Morrowind featured quests like the falling wizard and pantsless Hentus, hiding logical lore amid hundreds of books blending mythology, humor, and misdirection. Morrowind launched on PC and Xbox at a dire hour for Bethesda. It's make-or-break success rescued the studio from probable collapse in a dark time. Michael J. Fox couldn't make it back, so they sent in Jason Bateman. Mike and Christian dive into Teen Wolf Too (1987), the werewolf-themed boxing sequel nobody asked for and everyone immediately forgot. They break down why swapping high school basketball for college boxing is somehow both the same movie and a much worse one, what Bateman brings to the role of Todd Howard, and exactly how a film this commercially-minded managed to crater so completely.Whether you saw this one as a kid and need answers, or have never encountered it and are curious what "franchise desperation" looked like in the late '80s, pull up a chair. It's pretty bad. That's the point

In today's Daily Fix:Starfield's composer is confident that the game will be re-evaluated in a more positive light years from now. Via an interview with RPGSite, Inon Zur believes the gaming public wasn't ready for Todd Howard's vision of space when Starfield was launched back in 2023. The game was a modest success, but did not receive the praise heaped upon previous open-world Bethesda games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim. In other news, CD Projekt is throwing cold water on the idea of more Cyberpunk 2077 expansions. The company is busy working on The Witcher 4 and a sequel to Cyberpunk, but rumors of a new expansion to the 10-year-old Witcher 3 still persist. And finally, gamers can expect an update to the recent Pokémon Pokopia. The game launched to rave reviews and huge sales, but it's not without its bugs, which Nintendo says will be addressed soon.

We were already recording this episode when unexpected news broke: Sony is shuttering Texas-based first-party remake and port specialist studio Bluepoint. Equally shocking -- when taking into context the many first and second party failures, flubs, and misalignments in recent years -- is PlayStation Studios lead Hermen Hulst still somehow having a job. Bluepoint has an exceptional pedigree alongside untapped potential, but that's been squandered by the same machinery that allowed them to make a multiplayer game in the first place. Who is responsible for all of this first party buffonery? What's with this obsession with established teams all chasing the same exact thing? And how lucky is Sony that the going is so good for PlayStation 5 that none of this really seems to matter? Here's hoping the bloodletting begins and ends here, but we're skeptical. Other news this week includes rumors of PlayStation 6's delayed timeline, when we might expect to see Santa Monica Studios' unannounced title, McFarlane Toys picking up the Sony toy license, and more. Then, we wrap things up with listener inquiries. On the back of Silent Hill: Townfall's PS5 console exclusivity, why does Sony bother chasing these deals these days? Does Fairgame$ have an icecube's chance in hell of succeeding? Will God of War's remake be one compilation or three separate games? Is Dustin ready for his fatherly snot-sucking duties? A week after the Super Bowl and we finally got The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer, took long enough. Also Warner Bros seems to finally relent and gives Paramount 7 days to try again. If the Simpsons ever ends, which is probably more likely than you think, it wont spend time on a grand finale. PlayStation held a state of play last week, and it was heavy on Kratos, plus if you are waiting on a steam deck, blame AI.
In today's Daily Fix:First-party PlayStation support studio Bluepoint Games has been shuttered by Sony. The studio most notably developed the remakes of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls, both of which were well-received. They also assisted in several game collections such as the Metal Gear Solid HD collection, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, and others. Bluepoint was acquired by Sony in 2021 and assisted in the development of God of War Ragnarök. In other news, Bethesda director Todd Howard teased a return to "classic style" Bethesda in Elder Scrolls 6, and giving examples of exploration done in games like Fallout 3 and 4, Skyrim, and others. And finally, Kratos voice actor Christopher Judge has teased something God of War related for "late summer."

After years of secrecy and many delays, Xbox is set to pull the lid off one of its most anticipated RPGs at the upcoming Developer Direct. First rumored in 2017 and announced in 2020, Fable has been baking at Playground Games, the prolific racing game studio, for a long, long time. Now, Xbox promises a deep dive on everything from combat and choice to British humor and chickens. Is it do or die time for Fable? How does its early year showing shake up the already packed summer showcase? Will we finally get a release date? Perhaps just a release year? Worum geht's? Phil Salvador hosts a discussion with Dr. Wendi Sierra, author of Todd Howard: World Building in Tamriel and Beyond, and Emily Higgs Kopin. Dr. Sierra's, associate professor of games studies at Texas Christian University, book follows the career history of the Bethesda Game Studios executive producer and his influence on game design throughout the years. Emily Kopin, head of digital collections strategy at the Swarthmore College Libraries, joins us as our guest expert on the Elder Scrolls franchise to make up for Phil's tragic lack of extended time spent in this expansive universe. Wendi and Emily take Phil through discussions of Howard's impact on world building through micro narratives, challenges of documenting emergent gameplay, importance of scoping research, and the influence of Howard's design philosophy on modern gaming.*This episode has a follow-up bonus episode available to our paid tier Patreon members. You can listen to the Video Game History Hour every other Wednesday on Patreon (one day early at the $5 tier and above), on Spotify, or on our website.See more from Dr. Wendi Sierra:TCU Profile: https://honors.tcu.edu/view/wendi-sierra Recent Publication: Gaming for the seventh generation: Indigenous Futurisms in games See more from Emily Higgs Kopin:Bluesky: @ehkopin.bsky.socialLatest Published Work: American ArchivistSwarthmore Profile: swarthmore.edu Video Game History Foundation:Email: podcast@gamehistory.orgWebsite: gamehistory.orgSupport us on Patreon: /gamehistoryorg

This Week: Netflix moves to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery as Paramount counters with a hostile takeover affecting major titles like Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat. Plus, as AI continues to influence games: Dan Houser, Sega, and Todd Howard share their takes. And we’re gearing up for the Game Awards with our guest this week, Parris Lilly. It's This Week in Gaming!
This week Netflix now owns the Nemesis System, Todd Howard makes a use case for AI, Saudi Arabia owns almost all of EA, and some riblets. We add the Nemesis systems to different IPs. Peterson takes a mully.

Dive deep into the strategic mindset of level design, the shift from AAA development to indie studio entrepreneurship, and a radical new business model for creating innovative "Cocktail Games."Key Takeaways & Discussion PointsThe Reality of Level Design Beyond Architecture: Willem, a former level designer at Velan (Knockout City) and Zynga (Star Wars Hunters) , defines level design not as architecture, but as the execution of the game's intent and vision. You are the "great implementers" who build the playground for the core mechanics. Finding the Fun: Execution requires risk-taking. Good levels break the traditional norms—like the restrictive three-lane structure in some shooters —to find unexpected fun and keep the experience fresh. Inspiration Outside the Engine: To avoid creative blocks, step outside your comfort zone. Willem found inspiration for a level in Knockout City (Rooftop Rumble) by listening to Pink Floyd and used JFK assassination podcasts to conceptualize Darth Vader's Castle.
Todd Howard and Bethesda Game Studios have finally released Starfield to the gaming world and there is quite a bit to go through! After listening to the episode, we'd love...
PlayStation 5 has officially turned five, giving us much to reflect upon. Has the console lived up to its potential, left folks disappointed, or fallen somewhere in between? We get into that -- alongside new Sony financials that paint an admittedly rosy picture -- before getting into the meat of our show. Two new Sony-aligned games have been revealed, but they've left many potential players puzzled, as neither offering is actually on PlayStation hardware. For starters, NCSoft's long-rumored Horizon MMO is real. It's called Steel Frontiers and it actually looks really nice. But it's only on PC and mobile. Meanwhile, a new Ratchet & Clank game has also been showcased, an online arena shooter called Ranger Rumble. But it too eschews PS5 and PS4, instead going straight to mobile platforms only. What gives? Why does Sony seem half-in on these off-platform initiatives, all the while neglecting their core audience that could give these respective titles the boost they need? Is it time for them to break old habits and embrace a more cogent multiplatform direction that centers PlayStation first and foremost? Plus: Sony's new 27" gaming monitor has people intrigued, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Spirits is getting another closed test, Elden Ring: Nightreign is receiving some much-needed DLC, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! What do we think of Valve's new Steam Machine PC-console hybrid? In any given game's menus, where should subtitle options be nestled: General, Audio, or Graphics? Does ARC Raiders success potentially benefit Marathon? Is Dustin wielding his power over Brad in unsavory ways? Xbox's big bet for bringing PCs to the living room has officially been undercut. This week, Valve announced three (!) different pieces of hardware. First, there is the Steam Machine, which serves as the strongest competitor to consoles. While still very much a PC, the Steam Machine packs a lot of punch for a small device and could be a force if priced well. Second, a brand new VR headset in the Steam Frame. Despite Meta having massive first-party support, Valve has decided to challenge a space that many of us thought was finished growing. Third, and finally, is a Steam Controller. It's horrendous looking and makes the Duke look ergonomic. How does Valve's aggressive hardware plans disrupt Xbox and does any lingering appeal for the PC in the living room by Xbox remain? The Dukes unite and dive straight in. Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement. 0:00:00 - Intro0:08:49 - The Hair Crisis0:13:57 - Halo Infinite support is ending0:21:59 - Former Nintendo President opens up on Xbox and Switch 20:31:59 - State Of Play Japan reactions0:47:15 Arc Raiders is a smash hit0:57:04 - GTA 6 has been delayed1:09:02 - Take Two proves great narrative games sell well1:13:02 - Borderlands 4 sales are soft1:18:58 - Dispatch sells over 1 million copies1:20:47 - Ghost Of Yotei sells over 3 million copies1:23:00 - BioWare and EA recommit to Mass Effect1:42:28 - Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra has been delayed1:44:35 - Silent Hill 2's Xbox release date leaks1:48:42 - Nintendo first party are using game key cards1:51:07 - Square Enix undergoes layoffs and drops new roadmap2:03:02 - Trails In The Sky Remake 2 confirmed for 20262:05:54 - What We're Playing3:00:07 - Valve announces Steam Machine, Frame, and Controller3:28:55 - Todd Howard interview3:42:30 - Avowed 2 is in the cards, but not Outer Worlds 3? Welcome to Active Reload! This week, James, Grant, and Steve discuss the biggest news of the week: That's right, Pigeon Simulator is OUT!!! Just kidding, Grand Theft Auto 6 was delayed again, this time to November 2026. The guys debate whether we could see it on new consoles next year, or will it be the same thing that happened to Grand Theft Auto 5 with the previous generation of consoles.Plus, Todd Howard was being interview by GQ and stated that Elder Scrolls 6 is "years away". It's been seven years since the 2018 E3 splash screen trailer and there has been absolutely nothing of the game since, what should we expect? Finally, it really is a big week for releases, with Call of Duty and Escape from Tarkov on the horizon. This week on the Boss Rush Podcast: Corey Dirrig, LeRon Dawkins, and Patrick Klein dive into how two iconic franchises—Grand Theft Auto and Fallout—remain forever rooted in American culture. Rockstar's Dan Houser and Bethesda's Todd Howard both reaffirm that their series simply wouldn't work outside the U.S., with GTA's satirical take on “Americana” and Fallout's atomic-age paranoia defining their worlds. The crew also breaks down Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's comments that Xbox's biggest rival isn't PlayStation but TikTok, as the gaming industry now battles for players' attention rather than console dominance. Plus, new data shows remakes vastly outpacing remasters in revenue on PS5, proving players crave fully reimagined classics like Resident Evil 4 and Silent Hill 2. The Nintendo Switch edges toward breaking DS sales records, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond's latest trailer amps up the hype ahead of launch, and Hideo Kojima reacts to learning that Konami once rejected a Matrix game pitch. All this and more, this week on The Boss Rush Podcast!Follow our Hosts:Corey Dirrig, Founder of Boss Rush Media and the Boss Rush NetworkLeRon Dawkins, VP of Technology and Culture at Boss Rush NetworkPatrick Klein, Games Manager at Boss Rush NetworkJoin the Boss Rush Community: Join the Boss Rush Network Community DiscordFollow Boss Rush Network: Follow Boss Rush Network on X/Twitter, Bluesky, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, and InstagramSupport Boss Rush Network:Support Boss Rush on Patreon and buy merch on our Store.
