In honor of our wintertime in our neck of the woods, we are focusing on different themes of making the most of long winter downtime in the Northern parts of the world. To start things off, we begin this series with introducing the concept of Slöjd (or Sloyd) which is a Swedish word that for many hundreds of years has referred to being self sufficient through the act of craft. Simple hand tools, simple techniques to build anything. Hear some interviews with several folks of the Scandinavian Slöjd tradition of woodworking and beyond to American, English & Japanese traditions as well."Slöjd is part of the self-sufficient household, how people survived before industrialization. Slöjd is the work method farmers used when they made tools for house building, farming and fishing, and objects for their household needs. For thousands of years, the knowledge of the material has deepened, and the use of the tools has evolved along with the understanding of how function, composition and form combine to make objects strong and useful. The word slöjd derives from the word stem slög, which dates to the 9th century. Slög means ingenious, clever and artful. It reflects the farmers' struggle for survival and how it made them skilled in using the natural materials surrounding the farm: wood, flax, hide, fur, horn and me- tal. I have picked up a dialect expression from my home county, Västerbotten, that has become a personal motto. We say Int' oslög, “not uncrafty,” about a person who is handy and practical. Slöjd in its pure self-sufficient use is characterized by an individual using simple tools with great skill, a deep knowledge of raw materials, and the ability to solve functional problems. The resulting objects are intended for the maker's personal use." - Jögge SundquistLearn more about the inspiring folks from this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >Hear about green woodworking for carving spoons, turning bowls and more from voices like Jögge Sundquist, Jarrod Dahl, Ben Law, Barn the Spoon, Robin Wood, Sylva Spoon & more…Enjoy and happy woodworking!- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. In June 2020 the town of Beit Sahour was recognized by the World Craft Council as the World Craft City for the year 2020 based on its long tradition of olive wood carving. The World Craft Council is a UNESCO-affiliated organization that was founded in New York in 1964 to promote and support craft work. Palestinian olive wood carving probably dates back to the Crusader time and is artisan work that was taught from father to son. Most of the olive wood industry is at least partially mechanized now but there are still olive wood artists who spend weeks working on one piece, by hand, with lots of characteristics and details that could never be done by a so-called copy machine.Elias Abu Zuluf from Beit Sahour has his own olive wood workshop and souvenir shop. In this podcast interview he talks about the characteristics of olive wood, how this local tradition came about, what kind of olive wood is used, what type of carvings you can find in Palestine and how Covid19 affected the wood workers in Palestine. If you are interested to visit his website and see the olive carving go to www.zuluf.com and order online with the "15 off" promo code.Follow Stories from Palestine podcast on Facebook and Instagram and sign up for the mailing list. Fall semester 2020 brings season 3 of the Creativity Conversations podcast. This podcast episode features excerpts the Feb. 2019 conversation between woodcut artist Tom Hück and Michael C. Carlos Museum Curator of Works on Paper Andi McKenzie. Watch the video of the original conversation.Best known for his large-scale woodcuts, Hück's brash sociopolitical commentary draws from great satirists like Hogarth, Daumier, and R. Crumb. His technique, however, is inspired by the famed German woodcut artists of the Northern Renaissance, Albrecht Dürer and Martin Schongauer, among others. Hück and McKenzie discuss these influences and Huck's creative enterprise, Evil Prints, where he creates his own work and trains the next generation of remarkable printmakers. This conversation is introduced by host/Arts at Emory employee Maggie Beker and Emory College student Joel Hines. Beker and Hines introduce the podcast, discuss Hines' own creative works, and enjoy exploring a medium foreign to them both - woodcutting. This program is part of the Rosemary M. How the f**k did Eric Rhoten know exactly what he wanted to do at just the ripe old age of 10? Today we’re talking with Eric about his entrepreneurial journey that started with him and his dad creating custom wood signs at county fairs. Eric’s story is unique for our show in that he’s been working at the same place since he was a kid: Dave’s Signs. His father, the company’s namesake, started the business in 1970, but since his retirement in 1997, Eric has been at the helm. He’s continually innovated and kept the company thriving with savvy moves like buying the domain makeawoodsign.com and building out a YouTube channel with over 38,000 subscribers. Today, Eric is still the owner and operator of Dave’s custom carved signs. So how did Eric become a partner at Dave’s Signs at just 16 years old? And how does Kari Pearce fit into all of this?

Itchy foot syndrome sent me off on what was supposed to be a great adventure traveling across Canada in a custom-fitted K-car with wood carvings on hand to pay the way. The plan was to visit small-town Canada from coast to coast, talking to people and taking photos with the end goal of publishing a table-top photo journal. The best-laid plans of mice, or in this case, a 49-year-old woman, went sideways without ever leaving British Columbia.

Woodwork is known as a method of stress relief. Speak to any carpenter or weekend woodcarver and they’ll tell you that it’s just as much about the process as the product. Losing yourself in a project, focusing on natural materials and creating shapes and joins is a way to connect with nature and with yourself. There’s something primal about it — holding, turning, changing wood. Making something out of nothing. The scent of cut wood and sawdust. The weight of tools in hand. Plus it’s been proven that learning a new skill helps to balance a stressful life; it gets you out of your head and lets you be a beginner again. So this is our recommendation, today: book yourself onto a woodworking course or pick up some materials and experiment on your own. It’ll make you feel much better than sitting down to stream a new season of something, again.
Ely Folk School brings young and old together to teach and be taught traditional skills passed down from the ancestors who founded their beloved town. Paul draws from his lifelong interest in outdoor adventure to remind us that our daily encumbrances pale in comparison to the magnificence of the natural world around us.

https://binauraldiaries.co.uk/alistair-park-woodcarving/ Having talked about doing it for quite some time, I recently visited Alistair Park at his studio at Bower Ashton in Bristol to make field recordings of some of the sounds that his tools make in use. Alistair has been working with wood for over 20 years, and it was a great pleasure to see him practising his craft and to hear the sounds made by various wood carving techniques that he chose to demonstrate. It's clear that such craftsmanship relies on an intimate understanding of the associated tools and materials. It goes without saying that the appearance and feel of the wood are key when crafting the raw material into the end result, but I was interested to learn that also the smell of the wood and the sounds made when working it all feed into the creative process. In this recording Alistair uses a gouge to carve a relief portrait of David Bowie into a star-shaped piece of oak. Health and safety should play a major role in any work industry, and woodcarving is no exception. There are lots of little things that can help aid you in staying safe - like protective gear, or correct technique - but one main way to stay safe is to work in the right frame of mind.
This will be a much shorter episode today, but don't be fooled, it will still offer you vital information to aid you in your wood carving/spoon carving journey. Today we are going to be discussing the materials you will be working with: wood. After all, you can't be a wood carver without it.
You've finally chosen what tools to buy and have spent a lot of money to get them, so why do people at this point neglect the regular maintenance needed to keep them in good shape? Tool maintenance is a very crucial, yet largely overlooked, thing. Despite what you may think, a sharp tool, is a safe tool, especially when it comes to carving.
In today's episode, we will be talking about Shaun's spoon carving tool kit. Shaun is going to talk through his toolkit and give some recommendations and tips on finding the best tools for you.

On today’s episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast we're talking about building a successful career in quilting with my guest, Eleanor Burns. Eleanor Burns is truly a star in the quilting industry. She entered the field in 1978 with a self-published book, "Make a Quilt in a Day-Log Cabin Pattern.” Her innovative techniques in "strip piecing" made quilting possible for busy sewers and remains popular today. Eleanor’s signature technique is to take time treasured patterns and make them quick and easy to sew with new methods. In 1990, Eleanor pioneered the way people view quiltmaking with her Quilt in a Day television series, which still broadcasts nationwide. She continues to be a highly sought after teacher and demonstrates her patterns and techniques on the Quilt in a Day website, live streaming webinars, and on YouTube. In 1998 Eleanor designed her first fabric collection, "Anniversary Florals," with Benartex. She’s designed several more since then and has also collaborated in designing several special edition sewing machines. To date, Eleanor has published over 150 books and patterns and created numerous quilt rulers, templates and tools. +++++ This episode is sponsored by GlassEyesOnline. In a West Oakland lot at 2205 Magnolia, just off West Grand, sculpture artist John Abduljaami lets the wood be his guide. He's there almost every day working from 9am to 5pm. Sometimes he sees a bird. Other times it's a dog, a cowboy on horseback, a rat or a walrus. "Then I start drawing with the chainsaw," Abduljaami tells Spark. A prolific artist who dreams of building a legacy through the wood sculptures he leaves behind, Abduljaami estimates he has produced 500 pieces thus far. If he had his druthers, he would produce a new piece each day. Along with a chainsaw, he uses such tools as an adze, a hammer and a chisel. He often turns to photographs and images of his subjects to guide him while he carves, cuts and shapes the wood before him. While some pieces are delicately rendered birds and jackalopes, others -- like his 2,600-pound walrus complete with wrinkly, cracked skin -- are much larger in scale. Carving the two-ton walrus meant starting with a 3,500-pound chunk of wood that had to be moved with a forklift.
