What do chemistry, committees and cooking have in common? They're all things which have formed part of the career of my guest on this episode. She's Sarah Ward, owner of The Cookery Lab, a unique cookery school that uses a science-led approach to teaching cooking skills. I first met Sarah when we worked together on governance at the Bank of England. She began her carerer as a chemist, before switching — for reasons she explains on the show — to regulation. And now she's a chef. In a fascinating discussion, I explore with Sarah how her scientific background shapes her approach to teaching cooking, emphasizing that it's not just about following recipes but about understanding the structure and science behind the food. Sarah shares how a pivotal experience teaching cooking at her son's school reignited her passion and led her to create a unique culinary space that blends chemistry and cookery. Sarah also reflects on her regulatory background, discussing the unexpected parallels between governance and gastronomy. From her time at the Bank of England to her experiences in professional kitchens, she reveals how good governance and good cooking share common themes – structure, discipline, and the ability to adapt under pressure. She also touches on how her teaching methods aim to empower everyday cooks to feel more confident and creative in the kitchen. We round off the conversation by discussing her vision for the Cookery Lab, her thoughts on the art versus science debate in cooking, and how she's combining her corporate experience with her culinary passion to teach life skills through food. Whether you love to cook or avoid the kitchen at all costs, Sarah's insights offer valuable lessons for anyone looking to rethink their relationship with food and/or their career. Guest Biography:Sarah describes herself as a chef, educator, and owner of the Cookery Lab – a unique cookery school that uses a science-led approach to teaching cooking skills.Prior to founding the Cookery Lab, Sarah worked in chemistry, financial regulation, and governance at the Bank of England. Her background in chemistry informs her cooking classes, where she helps everyday cooks understand the scientific principles behind recipes, encouraging them to experiment and build confidence in the kitchen. The Cookery Lab is designed to look like a chemistry classroom, complete with lab chairs, beakers, and test tubes, reinforcing Sarah's mission to demystify cooking through science. The Cookery Lab offers classes for all ages, focusing on life skills, confidence-building, and the joy of cooking, regardless of prior experience. Vengeance is such a core human urge that there are hundreds and thousands of parables and plays and stories warning us about what a dangerous path it is. In the classic Shakespearean tragedy, Hamlet destroyed himself and the entire Danish royal family in the name of revenge. Francis Bacon wrote “A man that studieth revenge keeps his own wounds green.” Today's story is a good reminder that if you seek revenge, you should dig two graves. Thursday 22 June 2023 Exeter Phoenix Prof David Butler FREng, Professor Tania Kovats, Trevor Bishop, Dr Sarah Ward, Anu Anand Hear four speakers passionately discuss the implications of our changing world on a key area. Climate Change and water are intertwined, from flooding and drought, to increased demand and varying quality. We're looking at the 10 key changes you need to know: what we are already experiencing, alongside what to expect in the coming years, and the positive ways scientists and engineers are building resilience. We're sharing the research behind the headlines, with a particular focus on the work of the Centre for Water Systems at the University of Exeter. We'll examine the science behind attribution; is there evidence that individual extreme flooding events were affected by Climate Change? How can we become more resilient in a changing world to extreme weather events and how does the artistic community work with scientists to communicate their work? This event is in partnership with the Centre for Water Systems at the University of Exeter, which is celebrating its 25 year anniversary.

Sarah Ward, a busy working mother, was not feeling great and had increasingly bad stomach pains, but kept putting off getting medical advice as she considered she had just overeaten rich food and needed a lie down and time to recover. She didn't want to use the limited health resources in her remote community, feeling they were needed for other people who were actually unwell -- but not realising she had a ruptured appendix and infection was spreading throughout her body. When this was discovered there was an emergency dash to get Sarah to Cairns for surgery and prevent her from losing her life. There is a morale to this story for all mothers out there -- look after yourselves. Don't put off getting medical advice when things aren't right. You can't look after those you love if you are unwell, or are not around anymore. :) ++++ Thanks so much for listening to the Flying Doctor Podcast. We celebrate Sydney WorldPride with cabaret performer and drag artist Reuben Kaye. In his breathlessly entertaining shows, Kaye shares his family's extraordinary story of survival and how the arts carried him through trauma — all while singing up a storm. Also, the Hayes Theatre Co revive Gentleman Prefer Blondes — but how is it a queer story? And we consider the evolution of queer performance through the years. In an era of increasing recognition of LGBTQIA+ rights, how does queer storytelling maintain its vitality?

Should activity coaching for interns look different than coaching for full-time FRs? What's different and what is the same? In this episode, Sarah Ward and Gabe Adams share their thoughts about activity coaching for interns; how to coach in groups, how to keep things fun, and how to set effective expectations. Tune in to this episode and hear more actionable advice and recommendations from our guests today. Highlights: 05:06 – Our recommendation is that they`re focused on getting 100 fact finders per year. 09:33 – Review goals, review their activity, and have them review their production progress to date. The second thing is for them to look ahead at their next month and ultimately visualize the process that it's going to take to achieve. 11:53 – High expectations in general just means that we care about you, we expect a lot of you, and what you do matters. 17:45 – You mentioned the aspect of fun, and I think that is so important, and it's hard to interject that organically but I think that things like music can impact our brain and the way we feel and behave. September is NICU awareness month which makes a commitment to inspire hope and to honor families experiencing a stay in the neonatal intensive care unit and the health professionals who care for them. In line with this effort this week I am sharing Sarah Ward's incredible story! Sarah has three children all of whom had a stay in the NICU. Her first birth of her twins found her being rushed to the hospital only two days after her baby shower. Her girls were whisked away from the operating room without her ever getting to hold them, or worse yet even see them - Heartbroken and confused by the realities of their situation the Wards plodded through until the girls were able to come home. When their son was born he was 37 weeks Sarah had high hopes of a more typical birth experience. She was able to hold her baby after giving birth to him and all seemed well until they took him for some tests and never brought him back. The trauma and disappointment came yet again and Sarah and her husband did their very best to make it through - Having survived all this, they wanted to give back somehow to the amazing NICU community and organizations that help NICU families, so they wrote a children's book which we will tell you all about in the episode. The thing I find so beautiful about that is that when their girls had their stay Sarah's husband loaded his arms with books from home and spent the days reading to the girls as a way to bond with them when they weren't yet able to hold them. He also encouraged her to take a poem that she had written the girls as their birth story and turn it into a children's book to bring hope to others going through what they had endured. You will be inspired by this raw honest conversation about their experiences!Www.littlewardbooks.com *Theme Music “Blessed Time” by Ketsa
