This week's story is the conclusion of a two-part story involving a 29-year-old Utah man named Cornelis “Casey” Bokslag, who was born in the city of Tilburg in the Netherlands and immigrated to America in 2001 with his family. Casey's parents are Robert and Els Schuts Bokslag. Casey was also the oldest of three children. In 2007, the family settled in Sandy, Utah. For this story, I will refer to Cornelis as Casey, which was his nickname. Casey would adapt to American culture and the English language after arriving in the country. On June 6, 2022, he was last seen at a Wells Fargo ATM in Salt Lake City, Utah.Casey enjoyed being outdoors and was a frequent skier. His father Robert said Casey was an active and adventurous young man who decided to find adventure in the United States Marine Corps. After he left the Marines with an honorable discharge, Casey secured a job as a ranger working at the Watershed for Salt Lake City Public Utilities. It was the agency in charge of providing drinking water. Robert last saw his son on Saturday, June 4, 2022, and everything seemed normal. He had visited his parents and had dinner with them. Robert said the visit seemed normal. On June 5, Robert said Casey was playing an online game with one of his younger brothers. He told his brother he had to go because his rice was done. Casey also bought a gun that same day. His father didn't seem concerned because Casey enjoyed shooting. Besides, he was a Marine Corps veteran trained in firing weapons.According to Robert, Casey was captured on a security before noon on Monday June 6th. He left his apartment alone in South Salt Lake. He had his backpack on and was likely headed to his job for his online training scheduled for noon.He was also seen withdrawing $100 from a Wells Fargo ATM in Salt City which was near his job. He never made it to work. After leaving the ATM machine, he has never been seen again. Robert says law enforcement checked Casey's cell phone records. And according to phone records, his phone was last active in the area of the ATM machine. On June 8th, Casey's boss became concerned when he didn't show up for work. His boss contacted Robert to share his concerns. It definitely wasn't like Casey to not show up for work. He was reliable and would never not show up for work without a good reason. After launching a massive search, law enforcement found no trace of Casey. He's been missing for just over a year. His family is desperately trying to find him.Casey is 6'2” tall, weighs 140 lbs., has blond hair and gray eyes, with a goatee. He typically wears long green Wrangler cargo pants, a T-shirt, military boots or sneakers, and a cap. If you went to a concert in Salt Lake City in the late 2000s, you could probably find the show's promotional poster, designed by artist Leia Bell, and the band's latest album on vinyl — all in one building. Located at 221 E. Broadway at the time, Bell's downtown store and gallery, Signed & Numbered, sat in the basement, with record store Slowtrain just above it. The one-stop spot once well known to music lovers has since been demolished, but Bell and her husband, Phil Sherburne, are still celebrating 15 years of being in business as Signed & Numbered. These days, the two are more focused on building and selling custom frames than being a poster shop, and their store is now located in South Salt Lake, next door to the Salt Lake Bicycle Collective. This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. How our communities grow directly impacts everyone's physical health and mental well-being. To help plan for the future, the Utah Department of Transportation established “Move Utah” to encourage biking and walking. Here's UDOT's Heidi Goedhart with more. HEIDI GOEDHART Each year, hundreds of experts, including city planners, engineers, and community leaders from across the state come together to discuss best practices for improving decision-making related to health, transportation, and land use. In March, “Move Utah” had approximately 400 people attend our virtual programming, and biking and walking tours. The walking tour focused on health disparities in South Salt Lake and Salt Lake City, where just a one-zip-code change means an average drop in life expectancy of ten years. The biking tour focused on how Utah's transportation agencies collaborated to include critical walking and biking infrastructure in what was previously just a $450 million freeway project. By working together, Utah now enjoys what is called the Golden Spoke – a regional trail system spanning more than 100 miles from Ogden to Provo — the most extensive biking and walking network in the Western United States. Find out more at Move.Utah.Gov. DEREK MILLER Walking and riding bikes reduces traffic congestion, improves air quality, enhances our mental health and makes Utah a healthier place to live. We're fortunate to have leaders engaged in these issues through the Move Utah effort. I'm Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Originally Aired: May 4, 2022

The Mayor of a small city along the Wasatch Front is getting a pay raise dreams are made of for many of us -- 67% ... she'll earn an annual salary of $136,000 a year. But this pay bump comes with a twist -- how it happened. The mayor appoints members of a commission, the city council appoints a member of the commission -- and then the commission is sidelined and pay increases go forth. It's clear the city of South Salt Lake now has a battle on its hands. Tim Webb, President of POET political action committee and sponsor of the referendum against mayor and city pay joins the conversation. John Dougall, UT State Auditor shares insight on how the process works with transparency on deciding pay raises. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The controversy of the Mayor's pay in South Salt Lake.. She was earning $81,000 a year ... her new salary (which is retroactive according to KSL.com) back to January ... her new salary is $136,000 a year. Normally we see raises close to 3%, 5%? That's a 67% increaseSouth Salt Lake Mayor, Cherie Wood calls in live to discuss her controversial pay raise. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Utah County, the seat of The Church of Latter-day Saints of Jesus Christ-owned Brigham Young University, has a reputation for being pretty conservative — even for red state Utah. But things are changing some, especially in the "tree streets" community. If you've driven down State Street in South Salt Lake, you've surely seen the towering blue and red gate of "Chinatown." Culture reporter Palak Jayswal and Utah Eats reporter Stefene Russell recently spent some time in the Chinatown and spoke with some of the 22 tenants who own businesses behind the large gate. Also, with Gov. Spencer Cox's approval, Utahns could be formally celebrating Juneteenth.
Native Americans have made major contributions to Utah, but they've also been discriminated against or ignored. Click here for the Utah Dept. of Culture & Community Engagement version of this Speak Your Piece episode which includes topics discussed in time, photos of guest speakers and additional resources and readings.Podcast Content: Former Utah State University (USU) grad student Emma Jones and USU Assistant Professor of Environment and Society Dr. Mariya Shcheglovitova, shares the history and science related to the Home Owners' Loan Corporations' (HOLC) “redlining" of Salt Lake City; and their investigations of spatial distribution of environmental hazards contained in both the city's original west side (Pioneer Park neighborhood) and in expanded west side communities (Poplar Grove, West Pointe, Rose Park, Glendale, South Salt Lake, etc.), where most of Salt Lake City's communities of color reside. This podcast is all about how examining the past (history) along with geographical and public health data (science) can help a community like Salt Lake City see evidence concerning contemporary health and social problems, how such evidence can play a part in solving these problems, and point municipal and community leaders towards better city and development practices. “Scholars have found that race is the most significant predictor of environmental pollution exposure…Crowder and Downey (2010) [and they have] found that Black and Latinx households experience higher levels of proximate industrial pollution compared to White households.” This is an excerpt from Emma Jones' capstone project. Jones and Shcheglovitova anticipate their research to be used in further investigations regarding spatial patterns and terrestrial pollution in SLC. Their research connects the study of spatial distribution of terrestrial pollution to both historic and present-day planning practices which they believe perpetuate housing segregation and disinvestment in communities of color. Bottom line: Jones and Shcheglovitova documents the existence of environmental racism in SLC. Their identification of spatial patterns led them to create an interactive map accessible in Salt Lake West Side Stories -- post 35 (see within a link to Jones' complete paper).Bio: Emma Nathel Jones has a Bachelors of Science in Conservation and Restoration Ecology with an emphasis in GIS and a minor in Landscape Architecture. During their time at Utah State they worked on a variety of research projects concerning sustainable energy development and sustainable agriculture as a part of the Undergraduate Research Fellowship. They are currently pursuing a Masters in City and Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah. Bio: Dr. Mariya Shcheglovitova is a human geographer with interests that span environmental and social justice, urban political ecology, cultural geography, and environmental history. She completed her PhD at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where she worked on a project investigating present-day and historic intersections of street tree planting programs, waste management, and housing segregation. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/misteriossinresolver/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/misteriossinresolver/support
Pirates of the Scareibean? Flying Dracula? Authentic Haunted Mansion props? All this and more was what you could find at Rocky Point. From 1979 to 2006, this was the premier haunted attraction in Utah with its original location in Ogden and then in South Salt Lake. Headed by the Queen of Haunts, Cydney Neil, it really paved the way for the abundance of haunted houses we enjoy today. Lucky for us, we were able to visit with and interview The Queen herself. A very big thanks to Cydney for taking the time to reminisce about the old days. It happened after young movie and TV director Bob Rafelson, looking for his big break, dreamt up a show about a struggling rock band. He ran a production company called Raybert with his business partner Bert Schneider, whose father was the head of Columbia Pictures. The TV division of Columbia agreed in 1965 to go ahead with the project. Supporters credit him with driving imperialism out of China, modernising the nation and building it into a world power, promoting the status of women, improving education and health care, as well as increasing life expectancy as China's population grew from around 550 million to over 900 million under his leadership. Conversely, his regime has been called autocratic and totalitarian, and condemned for bringing about mass repression and destroying religious and cultural artifacts and sites. He received multiple nominations for Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906, and nominations for Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, 1902 and 1910, and his miss of the prize is a major Nobel prize controversy. he is best known for the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. He first achieved literary acclaim in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth, and Sevastopol Sketches, based upon his experiences in the Crimean War. Tolstoy's fiction includes dozens of short stories and several novellas such as The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Family Happiness, and Hadji Murad. He also wrote plays and numerous philosophical essays. In the 1870s Tolstoy experienced a profound moral crisis, followed by what he regarded as an equally profound spiritual awakening, as outlined in his non-fiction work A Confession. His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him to become a fervent Christian anarchist and pacifist. Tolstoy's ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal 20th-century figures as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Tolstoy also became a dedicated advocate of Georgism, the economic philosophy of Henry George, which he incorporated into his writing, particularly Resurrection. He was born in Yasnaya Polyana, Tula Governorate - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Tolstoy9 Sept 1890 - Colonel Harland David Sanders, American businessman, best known for founding fast food chicken restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (also known as KFC) and later acting as the company's brand ambassador and symbol. His name and image are still symbols of the company. The title 'colonel' was honorary – a Kentucky Colonel – not the military rank. Sanders held a number of jobs in his early life, such as steam engine stoker, insurance salesman and filling station operator. He began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant inNorth Corbin, Kentucky, during the Great Depression. During that time Sanders developed his "secret recipe" and his patented method of cooking chicken in a pressure fryer. Sanders recognized the potential of the restaurant franchising concept, and the first KFC franchise opened in South Salt Lake, Utah in 1952. When his original restaurant closed, he devoted himself full-time to franchising his fried chicken throughout the country. The company's rapid expansion across the United States and overseas became overwhelming for Sanders. In 1964, then 73 years old, he sold the company to a group of investors led by John Y. Brown Jr. and Jack C. Massey for $2 million ($16.2 million today). However, he retained control of operations in Canada, and he became a salaried brand ambassador for Kentucky Fried Chicken. A "level crossing" is an intersection where a railway line crosses a road or path. That's instead of the railway line using an overpass or tunnel to cross a road. For Level Crossing Brewing Owner Mark Medura, the term signifies much more. "The deeper meaning for me," he says, "is a crossroads kind of thing where the three of us have met and have taken this leap of faith with each other. Katie and Chris both left what I would consider their promising careers to join a start-up. It's a true leap of faith they took in me." Katie is Katie Flanagan, the brewery's sales and marketing manager. And Chris is Chris Detrick, Level Crossing's head brewer. You'll hear from Katie, Chris, and Mark in this episode of the Utah Beer News podcast. They sit down with me to discuss the joys and challenges of starting a brewery from scratch. They share their thoughts on the booming craft beer scene in Utah. They ruminate on their favorite local beers of the moment. And we even touch on some political stuff. Plus, we talk about the beers that will be available when Level Crossing Brewing opens to the public in March 2019. We also talk a bit about licensing during the podcast. We are happy to report that soon after we recorded the podcast, Level Crossing Brewing received its bar license. For an accompanying article, please visit UtahBeerNews.com. Enjoy the episode! Episode 14 | February 4, 2019
In some ways, it's always been simply Shades Brewing. It's rare for someone to refer to the South Salt Lake brewery by its formal name — Shades of Pale Brewing Company. So Shades is going all-in to better leverage what it believes to be strong name recognition and brand equity. Utah Beer News talks with Shades CMO Dave Murray about the shift, which goes deeper than merely a name change and label reboot. Instead, it's positioning Shades as an identity, a personality. We also chat with Trent Fargher, Shades founder, about what's next for the line of kveik golden sour ales. The brewery is fresh off a gold-medal win at the Great American Beer Festival for its Kveik 1. Read the accompanying article. Enjoy the episode! Episode 9 | October 15, 2018

In early 2014, James Fowler introduced Sugar House Distillery and became Utah's very first grain-to-glass, small-batch spirits distillery, where the entire production—from the raw ingredients all the way to the bottle—is done in-house using their own still. And it all happens in their warehouse in South Salt Lake that just so happens to be South Salt Lake's first privately-owned liquor store since prohibition.Needless to say, Sugar House Distillery is a pioneer. Which is the very attitude you need if you want to start a liquor distillery in Utah. There were permit and license issues, questions about how to deliver quality spirits without expensive stills, and an uphill battle to convince people in Utah that good liquor was worth paying extra for.Fortunately, Sugar House Distillery is a part of a burgeoning movement, not unlike the craft beer movement. James Fowler says the small-batch distillery trend is just as large as craft brewing, but a mere 10 years behind — and we're just seeing the crest of the wave of a trend that will result in a lot more local distilleries across America, and here in Utah.In this episode of The Utah Foodie Podcast, we talk with Sugar House Distillery's owner, James Fowler, and his assistant distiller, Jake Wood, to learn about their distilling process, their liquor, and how they got started.—This episode of The Utah Foodie was hosted by Chase Murdock and produced by Ryan Samanka. In this episode of The Utah Foodie Podcast, our host Chase Murdock talks with the man behind Squatters: COO and General Manager, Doug Hofeling.Since quietly opening their doors on Broadway in 1989, Squatters has become a Utah staple in the restaurant and brewing scene. But when co-founders Peter Cole and Jeff Polychronis were getting started, their intentions were simple: they just wanted great beer, a friendly atmosphere, and a culture focused on quality, their community, and the environment.Squatters has always been successful, but the last five years have been explosive. In 2012 they announced a merging with their friendly competitor, Greg Shirf at Wasatch Beers, and the Utah Brewers Cooperative -- a massive brewing and bottling operation in South Salt Lake. They were also acquired by Firemen Capital Partners, a private equity group in Boston who wanted to invest in the craft brewing business and help Squatters and Wasatch combine and expand. Today, Squatters boasts five high-volume brew pubs in Utah and ships bottled craft beer to 16 states. They've been listed as one of the Top 50 craft brewers in the country and hold 17 World Beer Cup awards, which is a feat only two other brewers in the US can also claim. As Squatters continues to expand and receive recognition for quality beer, many in our state feel they are representing Utah and shattering our historic reputation of not appreciating a great brew. Importantly, Squatters has been able to maintain its commitment to a triple bottom line philosophy of People, Planet, Profit, that drives an emphasis on investing in the community as well as eco-friendly, ethical, and healthy food.Join us in this episode as we further explore all of this and get to know Doug Hofeling, the man at the helm of this reinvented craft-brewing leader. —This episode of The Utah Foodie was hosted and produced by Chase Murdock.
