Salt Lake City has proposed a plan to transform Pioneer Park's Farmers Market into a year-round venue that could make the SLC Farmers Market a year-round event, along with significant park improvements. Debbie and Holly discuss the proposed changes and take listener calls.
In the heart of downtown, Salt Lake City's Parks and Public Lands Department unveiled their new $18.4 million redesign of Pioneer Park planned for September 2025. Utahns response to this redesign...is mixed. Does the park need a redesign so soon after the last one? Are they addressing the problems surrounding the park? Debby shares her thoughts.

It's getting easier by the day for your average person to become a graphic designer. Fire up a Canva account, and you can have a logo in minutes. And Lord knows AI is only making that easier, and more surreal. But, as things get easier for the masses, it puts a premium on stuff made by hand. Time was that it took blood and sweat to make the world beautiful. But, today? Well, imagine a robot trying to paint a boombox on a brick wall or the hood of a car. Foe some things, technology and machines won't do. For those occasions, you need an airbrusher. Like, for example, John Zant. John is celebrated in Lafayette for his hand painted designs. He likes the tough jobs and has developed a knack for painting on any kind of surface, like signs and glass and metal and brick. He grew up in New Mexico and moved to Lafayette in the 1980s to go college and picked up an airbrush when a fraternity brother got him a job at a local store. John spent years honing the skill and went on to launch a career in exterior art. He painted his first mural at Pioneer Park in Jennings and today gets contracts from local businesses looking for signage or designs that will help them stand out. John's also very active in the local skater community and is known by the moniker Bag of Boards. Standing out is the name of the game in the high-end shoe business. Kids line up around the block to get the first shot at a limited edition sneaker. But if you want your footwear to be truly limited, you might hire Brandy Cavitt to paint your shoes. Brandy is a graphic designer by trade. But her obsession is shoes. In 2024, she launched Shoe Fly Dirty Coast, a company that customizes sneakers on demand. The work is intensive. She conditions, massages, strips and softens shoe fabrics of all types — canvas, leather, you name it — so they can properly take paints. And she uses the high-end stuff to make the colors pop and stick. The process takes days but it can add years to the life of a shoe once properly treated with sealant. Brandy's play is to cash in on sneaker culture, which puts a big emphasis on one-of-a-kind, hard-to-find wearables. Brandy grew up in the Lafayette area and started her career in graphic design at 21. She's also a musician and previously worked for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's office. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. In a shocking turn of events, Lumumba Sers Sr., a prominent anti-violence advocate in Denver, was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a man at Pioneer Park in Commerce City. Sers, known for his work with the nonprofit "Heavy Hands Heavy Hearts," which aims to reduce violence, was taken into custody after allegedly shooting 27-year-old Malcolm Watson during a child's birthday party. The incident is suspected to be a revenge killing, as Sers' own son was shot dead a year earlier. This tragic event underscores the growing frustration with rising violence and the perceived failure of the justice system to hold perpetrators accountable. Despite his previous advocacy, Sers now faces first-degree murder charges, raising critical questions about the effectiveness of current anti-violence efforts and the desperation that can lead to vigilante justice.

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. The Downtown Farmers Market has once again transitioned out of Pioneer Park and into The Gateway for the winter season. Carly Gillespie, Deputy Director of Urban Food Connections Of Utah, joins us with more. Carly Gillespie: The mission of the Market is to support sustainable, regional agriculture; build community gathering places; increase access to nutritious, local foods in urban areas; and educate the consumer about shopping local. This is our tenth year organizing the winter season – and by far, it is the largest! More than 60 farmers, ranchers, bakers, artists, and makers are setting up their booths indoors for the winter season. Farmers are increasingly using greenhouses in Utah, so new visitors might be surprised by the amount of fresh foods like garlic, carrots, onions and beets. Patrons will also find artisan cheeses, savory sauces and salsas, yummy baked goods and fresh meats. Plus, there is a wonderful, family-friendly atmosphere that is inviting to all. With your support, we're achieving the goals and ensuring the community always has access to delicious, local food–year around. Visit the Winter Farmers Market at The Gateway every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Derek Miller: By visiting the market, Utahns are supporting local farms and businesses as they bring their products directly to the public. Ana, Eric, and Josh head to Rhinelander in this Bonus episode where we welcome Lauren Sackett intoour mobile Cabin – which set up in her offices at the Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce – to talk aboutwhat Eric calls the “James Brown of the Northwoods – the hardest-working town up here.” Rhinelanderdoes have quite a history of manufacturing prowess that has gone with the city's lumber processinghistory, a nod to its location along the Wisconsin River. Murals salute this history, and you canincreasingly find such references in the downtown area. One of the main topics is Rhinelander'slegendary Hodag, which celebrates 130 years in existence in 2023. The legend has received nationalattention since its inception, getting mentions on Scooby Doo episodes and a shout-out in one of J.K.Rowling's books. The Hodag still looms large, having just been named the best high school mascot in thecountry. We discuss how the Hodag has changed over years, the small statues of hodags around town(and by the way, you can pose with the World's Largest Hodag statue at the Rhinelander Chamber), andhow you can go around and visit the hodag statues and win prizes. There's a large and relatively uniquecountry fest every July in Rhinelander called the Hodag Country Festival; we discuss that and the firstHodag Heritage Festival that just took place in May. We also cover other places to visit in Rhinelander, from historic locales to emerging restaurants and shops that showcase the increasing diversity in cuisineand recreation options in town. It's all capped off under the beautiful green dome atop the OneidaCounty Courthouse. Check out all the details in this fun Bonus episode! Click here for the Utah Dept. of Culture & Community Engagement version of this Speak Your Piece episode which includes topics discussed in time, photos of guest speakers and additional resources and readings.Podcast Content: Former Utah State University (USU) grad student Emma Jones and USU Assistant Professor of Environment and Society Dr. Mariya Shcheglovitova, shares the history and science related to the Home Owners' Loan Corporations' (HOLC) “redlining" of Salt Lake City; and their investigations of spatial distribution of environmental hazards contained in both the city's original west side (Pioneer Park neighborhood) and in expanded west side communities (Poplar Grove, West Pointe, Rose Park, Glendale, South Salt Lake, etc.), where most of Salt Lake City's communities of color reside. This podcast is all about how examining the past (history) along with geographical and public health data (science) can help a community like Salt Lake City see evidence concerning contemporary health and social problems, how such evidence can play a part in solving these problems, and point municipal and community leaders towards better city and development practices. “Scholars have found that race is the most significant predictor of environmental pollution exposure…Crowder and Downey (2010) [and they have] found that Black and Latinx households experience higher levels of proximate industrial pollution compared to White households.” This is an excerpt from Emma Jones' capstone project. Jones and Shcheglovitova anticipate their research to be used in further investigations regarding spatial patterns and terrestrial pollution in SLC. Their research connects the study of spatial distribution of terrestrial pollution to both historic and present-day planning practices which they believe perpetuate housing segregation and disinvestment in communities of color. Bottom line: Jones and Shcheglovitova documents the existence of environmental racism in SLC. Their identification of spatial patterns led them to create an interactive map accessible in Salt Lake West Side Stories -- post 35 (see within a link to Jones' complete paper).Bio: Emma Nathel Jones has a Bachelors of Science in Conservation and Restoration Ecology with an emphasis in GIS and a minor in Landscape Architecture. During their time at Utah State they worked on a variety of research projects concerning sustainable energy development and sustainable agriculture as a part of the Undergraduate Research Fellowship. They are currently pursuing a Masters in City and Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah. Bio: Dr. Mariya Shcheglovitova is a human geographer with interests that span environmental and social justice, urban political ecology, cultural geography, and environmental history. She completed her PhD at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where she worked on a project investigating present-day and historic intersections of street tree planting programs, waste management, and housing segregation. Good Morning it's Thursday June 24th, and this is The Wenatchee World's podcast, Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Today --- About 70 people gathered Saturday for Wenatchee's second annual Juneteenth celebration. The Pioneer Park event came just two days after President Joe Biden signed into law a bill making Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday. Now our feature story… About 70 people gathered Saturday for Wenatchee's second annual Juneteenth celebration. The Pioneer Park event came just two days after President Joe Biden signed into law a bill making Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday. Chelsea Murphy, event organizer, said she was “over the moon” seeing people come together at the park. She noted that she's so thankful to be a Black woman today, in this community. To her, knowing what her ancestors have overcome - it's definitely a day of celebration. Murphy said she is excited for the future of Juneteenth in the Valley and hopes knowledge of the holiday will grow over time. Murphy explained that everyone should share in the celebration of Juneteenth. The day is for all Americans, not just for the Black community. Families can take this day, learn a little, and have their own special way of celebrating. A lot of people were protesting and marching for Juneteenth last year, but now in 2021, people can take a break and share the joy while gathered together. Murphy says that she knows that there are things that we still need to work on, but for the holiday she paused for joy. It's the second year Wenatchee Valley residents have gathered for the celebration. The history of Juneteenth dates to June 19, 1865, when Union Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the Civil War had ended. Granger's arrival freed enslaved people in the region a full two years after Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. After the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed there weren't enough Union troops in Texas to enforce the order until Granger's arrival and the end of the Civil War. Wenatchee resident Kim Steensma brought her two daughters out to the event. She told us that Wenatchee is “doing so many new things, and she's just grateful that we could do this as a community. Sarah Horowitz, a Leavenworth resident, also came to the park celebration with her family. She said it is important to participate in Juneteenth. To Horowtiz, we know too much now to be blind or ignorant and celebrating this holiday means an awareness of people who came before. Cameron Shepherd Beyenberg, a Wenatchee resident and poet, spoke during the event. She emphasized that the emancipation of all people is a true celebration of independence. To read more about this story visit us at wenatcheeworld.com. Before we continue, a special thanks to our friends and sponsors at Confluence Health. The team at Confluence Health is grateful for the trust the community puts in them every single day. They are diligently working to improve the health and quality of life for our friends and neighbors. They are Grateful | They are Confluence Health. Learn more by visiting them at ConfluenceHealth.com The public will be able to comment on Chelan County's proposed short-term rental code at a hearing at the end of the month on June 29th. This follows a meeting earlier this month when Chelan County commissioners met with the county's Community Development Director Jim Brown to work on changes to the draft of the short-term rental code. Apparently, the changes incorporated from the workshops last week did not substantially change the draft of short-term rental code. Changes were mostly focused on processes for registering. Drafts of the short-term rental code and recordings of short-term rental workshops are available at wwrld.us/rentalspage. You can also send comments to CD.STRComment@co.chelan.wa.us by email until July 2nd. The board of commissioners plans to make a final decision on the code July 14. Now, some RECENT history… Last year was Wenatchee's first ever official Juneteenth event. The day has been celebrated since the late 1800s, but its recognition in recent years has seen a phenomenal growth rate within communities and organizations throughout the country. And last year though it was a recognized holiday in Washington, it was not a legal state holiday. The death of George Floyd and weeks of national protests that occurred last year intensified focus on the holiday, and the larger issue of racial discrimination in America. Cities across North Central Washington joined those Black Lives Matter protests, often drawing more than 1,000 people for speeches and marches. And at last year's Juneteenth celebration in Wenatchee music was played, information was shared and voter registration was encouraged. Thanks for listening. Great to catch up with one of Australia’s ever increasing number of female jockeys. The lady with a name that catches the eye, is 37 years old and could be the nation’s oldest apprentice. Kath Bell-Pitomac talks about the gruelling travelling she undertakes to ride at meetings all over the state. Kath reminisces about her nomadic childhood. She talks of early days in South Australia, Victoria, and the Northern Territory. Horses were always her chief interest. She recalls her first introduction to racehorses at Pioneer Park racetrack Alice Springs. Kath recalls her first job as a professional trackwork rider. She talks of a move to Newcastle and the trainer who signed her to an apprenticeship. The mature age apprentice remembers her early winners and the beginning of her relationship with the fellow jockey who would become her husband. Kath looks back on her break away from racing. She lost the desire completely and didn’t ride a racehorse for ten years. She talks of her return to trackwork at Wellington(NSW). Slowly the passion returned and she began a new career as an amateur jockey. It wasn’t long before she got her weight down and re applied for her professional licence. Kath talks openly about her horror run of accidents, the extent of her many injuries and the frustrating months out of the saddle. The thirty seven year old acknowledges her favourite horses and favourite races. Bell-Pitomac pays tribute to the special people who’ve inspired her to pursue a lifelong passion for horses, including her dedicated manager. The remarkable horse person talks of husband Daniel and two wonderful kids- the son and daughter who look forward to the fashions in the field promotions at country race meetings.

Walking Tours of Mission Hills, San Diego by Mission Hills Heritage
October is the perfect month to take a walk in the local park and remember the thousands of people buried beneath your feet. Most locals know that Pioneer Park was once a cemetery, but there is so much more to the story of how we came to have our treasured and oft-used neighborhood park. Its history is unique and sometimes surprising. Some of the people buried there were early pioneers of San Diego. If not for the presence of their graves, it's unlikely the ground would have remained free of housing development to become our park. So join us in remembering them and help them come alive briefly. We don't want them to come back and remind us who they were! Happy Halloween from Mission Hills Heritage.

This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. For twenty-eight years the Salt Lake City community has welcomed the Downtown Farmers Market that includes more than 100 Farms and ranches from 6 Utah counties. Alison Einerson from Urban Food Connections of Utah is here to tell us more. ALISON EINERSON The Downtown Farmers Market opened on June 13th and will operate every Saturday through October 24th in Pioneer Park. It's recognized as an essential grocery service for the Intermountain region and an economic lifeline for local farmers and producers. To protect against the coronavirus, this year we enhanced safety measures, including a revised market layout with ten feet of space between vendors and one-way traffic throughout the market. There will be plenty of space for patrons following social distancing, and masks are required for vendors and staff. They are also encouraged for patrons. Farmers and producers will be on hand with fresh, locally grown produce, grass fed meats, dairy products, baked goods, and other packaged food favorites. For more information, or to contribute to our community efforts, please visit SLCFarmersmarket.org. We look forward to seeing you soon! DEREK MILLER The Downtown Farmers Market is a vehicle for entrepreneurs and represents the best of Utah. It helps Utahns share self-reliant habits by providing a venue to gather food, a sense of place and a respect for our agricultural pioneer heritage. I hope to meet you at the market! I'm Derek Miller, and this is Speaking on Business. Originally Aired: June 15, 2020.
“Can we get permission to appeal?” ___ A Co was placed into liquidation. A member was granted leave to commence a derivative action: [1] He did, and the Co lost: [4] He then purported to cause the Co to appeal: [5] He sought a declaration that the original leave extended to running the appeal; or, alternatively, that fresh leave should be granted: [6] A company in liq can’t rely on the Corporations Act for a derivative action. It must rely on the Court’s inherent jurisdiction: [9] The Court found the original leave did not extend to an appeal: [17], [18] There being no existing leave, the Court considered whether leave to appeal ought to be granted; noting the CA could be of no assistance as the Co was in liq. The Court had to consider (i) whether the appeal was well founded, (ii) the liquidator’s attitude, and (iii) practical issues for the liquidator and Co, like security: [34] On (i) the member did not provide enough evidence to convince the Court: [48] On (ii) the member’s failure to pay a $62K debt and adjourned bankruptcy proceedings added doubt to the value of his indemnity: [53] On (iii) the points considered at (ii) were again relevant: [59] The member’s application failed. Costs followed.
Scott Howell and Jim Bennett continue to tackle homelessness in Salt Lake City with Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes. Howell describes Hughes as the person who helped launch Operation Rio Grande, which sparked a movement for change to help the homeless in Utah. Part of that goes back to the Pioneer Park Coalition, which championed the idea of transitioning from homeless shelters to resource centers.

In a quaint neighborhood in San Diego, Pioneer Park is somewhere kids play and families picnic under the eucalyptus tress...not knowing that an estimated 4,000 bodies are buried in the ground beneath them. It's the perfect setting for another Poltergeist movie: They moved the tombstones, but not the bodies. Welcome to Muse Stories: The Unusual History of Every Thing, where today we take a look at the old Calvary Cemetery and its morbid history. Special thanks to our podcast producer, Jessica Crossman; and graphic designer, Tasha Hobbs. For More info, contact www.MuseCuratorial.com.
In August 2017, a major law enforcement initiative known as “Operation Rio Grande” was launched in Salt Lake City, aimed at curbing a concentration of crime, homelessness and drug use. Now, the area around Pioneer Park and The Road Home has transformed, with a sustained police presence cutting down on transient camps and a new drug court allowing addicts to gain access to treatment in lieu of prosecution. But what was a concentrated problem has been dispersed into neighboring areas of the city and county. And after one year, and tens of millions of dollars, there is a question of whether Operation Rio Grande is working to reduce drug use and homelessness, or whether it has simply relocated it. On this week’s “Trib Talk” podcast, Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes, R-Draper, and Tribune reporter Benjamin Wood discuss the one-year anniversary of the operation, it’s successes and ongoing challenges. “Trib Talk” is produced by Sara Weber with additional editing by Dan Harrie. Coffee shops have taken on a very important social role in communities. They facilitate local art, local food, and beverage vendors, and serve as warm and quiet places for people to work, collaborate, and gather. However, the social aspect has lessened as coffee shops have more and more evolved into places of work. The Rose Establishment, however, wanted to bring the social back to the equation.Opened in 2010 by Erica O'Brien, The Rose Establishment has become a staple in the Pioneer Park neighborhood. And with no Internet, it's the perfect place to gather for conversation, quiet reflection, or a damn good sandwich. On top of having locally sourced food options and seasonal beverages, The Rose Establishment is a completely restored space, a project tackled by Erica and her father.Join us on the show this week as we're joined by Erica O'Brien, Cody Kirkland, and Cori Norton, the three creatives behind this evolving coffee space that has firmly taken root into a neighborhood that is full of potential, and offers a bright future ahead.—This episode was sponsored by…90.9FM KRCL — Community Connection and Music DiscoveryThe Chocolate Conspiracy — A project in pure, raw, honey-sweetened chocolate.Maddox Restaurant — Featuring completely from scratch recipes in Perry, UT. since 1949, sourced and crafted from the finest ingredients available.Beltex Meats — A small butcher shop utilizing local meats and sustainable practices. There are many motivations to enter the restaurant business. Maybe you love to cook and are looking for a culinary challenge. Or possibly you are a competitive person who is looking for a creative entrepreneurial challenge. But some people just want to create a community. For Kestrel and Jerry K Leidtke Jr., community was the most important part of all. The Tin Angel name comes from very fun, but humble, beginnings. The original Tin Angel was founded by Jerry's father in 1962, and served as a bar in the downtown area. However, Tin Angel quickly became an LGBTQ hotspot and hosted weekly drag shows. It became a cultural hotspot and served as the first gay/drag bar west of the Mississippi. Even though the bar closed, the name lived on as a community beacon bursting with art and inclusivity. While Kestrel and Jerry have worked in the food industry for years, they always dreamed of creating something of their own that was more than just food. They wanted a space for artists, for a community to gather. They wanted to support local vendors and create an experience. When Kestrel stumbled upon a building owner putting up a “For Rent” sign, they instantly knew that their opportunity to create something of their own had arrived. In 2007, Tin Angel opened its doors. Bursting with local art, Tin Angel is an eclectic space that offers local, seasonal, varied foods that pay tribute to the community while also taking a creative twist with familiar favorites. Join us as we hear the story of Kestrel and Jerry, and learn more about this community staple that is standing firm with the ever-changing Pioneer Park area.—This episode was sponsored by…90.9FM KRCL — Community Connection and Music DiscoveryThe Chocolate Conspiracy — A project in pure, raw, honey-sweetened chocolate.Maddox Restaurant — Featuring completely from scratch recipes in Perry, UT. since 1949, sourced and crafted from the finest ingredients available.Beltex Meats — A small butcher shop utilizing local meats and sustainable practices. He's the man, of course, behind Tony Caputo's Market & Deli, a culinary staple in downtown Salt Lake City.Caputo's has been a large part of the Utah food scene since 1997 when Tony opened up across from Pioneer Park. It was about this time last year that he started thinking about retirement and his intentions to hand the reigns of the business over to his son Matt, and Matt's wife Yelena. But it was just a few weeks ago that Matt published a moving blog post on Caputo's website where he spoke fondly of his father and how he would miss spending time with him at the downtown location they are still in over 18 years later. The deli and market are such a large part of the Caputo family and Matt's post was moving.. and officially kicked off a new chapter for the family business. On today's show, we sit down with Tony Caputo to reflect on his career and hear stories of his days running Caputo's Market and Deli. If you know Tony, you know him as a caring, passionate, and friendly person and over the years he has had a large influence on the Utah food scene.
