We've made it to the milestone episode 30! After all the guests i've had in the past from a wide variety of backgrounds and professions I'm finally here. Who better to have on as a guest to hit this milestone with than a voice of the future? The elegant and sophisticated Saïna! Had to organise and host 2 concerts but yes I finally have a British artist on here (sorry not sorry) lol It may be episode 30 but we hit a lot of firsts with this one. Saïna is my first guest who is a British recording artist, first guest of Japanese heritage and first guest to have performed at my concert! We talk about her journey into music, the inner workings of her process and how it's all been so far. As much as you might see things online about how it all works, there are a lot of gems in there on how the music industry in the UK is like. Between this and the last episode a few big events have taken place:1. Hear:HER International Women's Day concert which I organised with Asian Tones and hosted Saïna and 5 other amazing up and coming Asian artists (Pritt, Lucy Tun, Lila Yin, Kaisha, Keydott). Good turn out and really positive responses at the iconic XOYO, Shoreditch!2. The Migration Museum opened the Taking Care Of Business exhibition in Lewisham which tells the story of migrants who have come to the UK and set up the shops which make up the heart and soul of neighbourhoods across the UK. Chinese takeaways, corner shops, laundry mats and much more, it's a preservation of an untold legacy which has paved the way for . Angela Hui (TimeOut journalist and author of Takeaway) curated the takeaway section where she recreated the shop front she grew up with and featured pictures of takeaway fronts across the UK, one of them being mine. There are also interviews she conducted with takeaway kids too which can be heard on the wall phone, mine is number 4! 3. I did a podcast episode with Saïna  for her podcast Lost In The Mix! On 27th Sep 2020, Crazy Brit Asian officially launched and this just so happens to be the 27th episode. Trust me, this was not intentional, it just happened haha. So this episode I record and post on my actual birthday and reflect on the journey of the past year, how things have developed and what the effect has been on my life. It's a bit of a whistle stop tour of what the past year with Crazy Brit Asian by yours truly.Addressing the elephant in the room, long time no pod episode! But that's because I've been super busy with organising, producing and hosting the Ripples In The Wave concert. A lot of work went into pulling this together so the episodes had to take a hit but it was totally worth it! A lil more on that later as before all of that and what led to it even coming into fruition is all the developments CBA had to go through to build such a foundation to take it on in the first place.I talk about how this was an idea inspired by Dumbfoundead and the Fun With Dumb podcast 3 years ago, how the ESEA landscape back then was minimal and very poorly represented. Who was the catalyst that triggered me and a wave of other podcasters to pic up the mic and hit record. As you can tell, things have changed drastically now with greater awareness of the nuances of the ESEA community. A lot of steps have been taken but there's still a lot to do as a community. The podcast has also opened many doors and collaboration opportunities such as the interview with Dumbfoundead, which led to interviews and developing relationships with the rest of the FWD crew and recognition on Clubhouse to get further guest collaborations. As the ESEA community has grown immensely, it's been an honour to have been a contributor to it and met a large number of others who've helped with making great strides too at besea.n's celebratory birthday event and also the celebration of the UK's first nationally recognised ESEA Heritage Month!So to wrap up this historic month in the UK I decided to make a bit of history myself by throwing a concert looking to the future. Together with help from WAV Collective and Sound of Plus 82, I organised, produced and hosted my first concert event which focused on up and coming east and southeast asian artists in the UK. The only other time this has happened outside of Asia is 88rising's annual Head in the Clouds concert in LA. As we know, the ESEA community is still massively underrepresented in the UK so this was well overdue and is the first ripple in a bigger wave.As for what's next for this pod, you'll just have to listen to find out. Follow on socials and holla if you feel like it. It's been a while and we're here with a brand new episode! Apologies for the absence, life happened with work and trying to get my things in order as i'm sure is the case with everybody else. We met on clubhouse and instantly admired her for everything that she does. Outside of her day job she held rooms with a friend of hers and provided therapy sessions and talk mental health with people that joined the rooms. She does all this whilst working in the mental health space for the NHS so UK hours whilst she is living in HK. As we know, in the asian community, even though it's come a long way in wider acceptance and being normalised, it's still considered a taboo subject that many avoid or are sceptical of. This episode is it's all about community both local and overseas. Starting off with a few words of empowerment and addressing the recent asian hate crimes which have taken place in the US. My guest on this episode is founder of British Chinese Biz, Faith Chow! A very big contributor to the BESEA community not just through the directory of local Chinese owned businesses based in Britain, but through their community building and representation advocating activities. Bi weekly community zoom calls, promotions and giveaways to give exposure to local businesses and also raising awareness of worthy causes within our community. She talks about how she does all of these things, the pillars that form the foundations of BCB and what it's bigger community goal is.It can't be ignored that there's been an ever increasing amount of anti asian sentiment, thus my underlying statement of anti asian hate as was stated in my #stopasianhate episode is now more than ever, every asian voice matters and it's time we use it to bring justice back into our community. Whether it's raising awareness, supporting our local businesses or calling out for ally ship, we cannot be the silent model minority society has painted us as any more. To the majority, it's an elite realm out of their reach but little do we know its doors have always been open and accessibly all at our fingertips. Episode 16 it's been a while and this episode the topic is the unfortunate recent rise of anti Asian sentiment. Where before the cases we'd hear about were more in the US but now it's spread closer to home across Europe and the UK. Where previously it was slurs and verbal abuse, but now it's become much more physical, aggressive and tragically leading to deaths. These unprovoked attacks need to stop! Action needs to be taken and the community needs to stand up together to fight this. The discussion was recently had in the Club House room I co moderate called Asians in the UK where certain issues were raised and addressed: Celebrities and the use of their platform, the lack of a prominent Asian representative talking about this, allyship, government support, how this is not comparable to the BLM movement and the action that we as the community can do. The issue is very real and we need to get more exposure and raise awareness of what can be done. There's the view that racism isn't really a thing in the UK and with the recent events which have taken place that is clearly not the case! Many grassroots movements and individuals have already been raising this awareness by posting helpful info graphics showing what's happened and links to resources. But more can and needs to be done. Projects are being started to raise awareness on #stopasianhate and we are finally forming a stronger more connected community not just in the UK but across the globe. Ep 9 is a round up of a load of good news which happened in the ESEA community in the past week, most of which was in the sports and entertainment space but there was one particular event which was a curve ball. Originally this was part recorded and supposed to drop on Sunday but the whole sound file got lost, thanks tech issues! So I recorded this late night mid week after work.A lot of really good things happened in the world of music and sports namely 88 Rising launching their radio station on Sirius XM, Rina Sawayama winning awards, gracing multiple front covers and just winning! Dumbfoundead getting his own radio show Dumb Early on the 88rising Radio station and many Asian artists guests featuring on the show. My one's to watch to be the next big thing are Year of the Ox and Luna Li.Sports, Korean NFL player Younghoe Koo is the highest scoring player in the league and in F1 Asian success are on the rise! For the first time there were two British East and South East Asians on the F1 grid (Alex Albon Ansusinha, British Thai and Jack Aitken, British South Korean Hapa). In F2 Yuki Tsunoda (Japan) wins the final race of the season and secures an F1 seat for 2021, whilst Guanyu Zhou (China) finished second. Asian success stories in western dominated sports! Amazing!Besea Poets was launched and spearheaded by Christy Ku @kukadoodles which is an amazing initiative giving a platform and collective space for ESEA poets in the UK to come together and share their art.The meat and bones of the episode is the but of the good news. The debacle surrounding Chef Philli Armitage-Mattin the self proclaimed Asian specialist Master Chef contestant who presented Asian food as 'dirty' monolith that needed refining. Making it part of her 'brand' to be one who refines it using the #prettydirtyfood and the phrase 'dirty food refined'. This cultural insensitivity spun out into something bigger and I go into how this stain on a white shirt just kept getting worse and spreading with every clean up attempt.The one good thing which came out of it to challenge the negativity and bring positive to Asian food however was the hashtag #ESEAEATS which aims to celebrate Asian food culture in the right way! This episode we explore the experiences of going to school as a British East Asian.School is something the mass majority of us have been through and have fond memories of favourite subjects, teachers and childhood friends. There is however the many challenges which come with identity when going to school as a British East Asian. The realisation that you are different from the other kids around you comes very early on as does the experience of racism and stereotyping, direct or subtle. There is also the responsibility to uphold your values and represent your culture as a model minority all whilst trying to fit in and score that A grade. As ESEA we are not just any minority but the minority minority which comes with differences out of our control and it's not just the way we look which is different to our peers, but the way we live, particularly the environment we go home to. The challenge of cultural dynamic and social interaction at school vs at home is it's own juggling act and the source of a widely experienced social disconnect that doesn't prepare many of us for the 'real world'. Welcome to ep 2, the Birthday episode! At the time of recording we're all 29 and turning 30 very soon. As of this upload however, I am now officially 30. Hence why i've dropped this on my 30th birthday! One of my goals was to start this podcast before 30 and I made it by launching Crazy Brit Asian a week ahead of it, phew! As we approach this life milestone, this episode we discuss our feelings about turning 30, asian expectations, the societal timeline, adulting, life lessons and looking forward.
