In episode 275 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Anthony Bedward. Anthony is a qualified person-centred psychotherapist and the Founder of a2btherapy. In this episode we chart his vast professional journey, from working as a mentor in a learning provision for young people expelled from school, to applying for a 10-week course at the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute based at the University of Staffordshire and then completing a three year degree there afterwards. He then landed two part-time jobs, one working for a company that delivered Princes Trust courses to 16–25-year-olds and another as a youth worker. Anthony then found a new job, working with survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA) at a charity called Imara Nottingham where they work with children and families to recover from the impact of sexual abuse on their lives. He worked there for eight months, before leaving to join the job he is in now and went onto set up A2BTherapy. We also discuss the lack of male therapists in the mental health space and why we need more men like Anthony, not just to help men, but working-class men and especially working-class black men like Anthony who will hopefully be able to put their trust in. We then explore his dyslexia diagnosis and how its shaped his life pre and post-diagnosis and the work he does with A2B. For Anthony's mental health journey, we discuss: the impact that being sexually abused as an adult had on his life, the importance of boundaries, figuring out his triggers and the levels of mental toughness you need to do the work he does. Welcome inside the world of Lee Williams, the creator behind two of London's photographic institutions- Rapid Eye Darkrooms & the Photobook Cafe - both of which we are proud to say are our neighbours, right here in the heart of Shoreditch. Typically, you'd find our guest for this episode, Lee Williams, behind the scenes, coming up with ideas that foster community and natural habitats for creative humans working in fashion, advertising and film- alongside (unknowingly) being recognised as a mentor to them. In this episode, we're taking you even deeper into Lee's personal story and how he's turned his passion into not one, but two thriving businesses. From leaving his native Wales and working weekends in an East London darkroom, to receiving a £250 grant from the Princes Trust that led to him setting up his very own, Lee exposes his ambition behind a beloved community institution. And then right back to the present day - on why he encourages photographers to talk about their work during the printing process at Rapid Eye, and how his interest in the concept of “third spaces” led to the creation of the Photobook Cafe…It's also important to mention the two powerhouse women at the helm of both Rapid Eye and Photobook Cafe, making it all actually happen - Lee's wife Sebi & London nightlife legend Farika Holden. A massive shout-out to you both!Consider this episode your warm and cosy entrance into Lee's roots, mindset and above all, passion for photography. It's a truly rare insight into his photographic universe. Today, David is joined by entrepreneur, prolific author, and disrupter Rob Moore to talk about The Money Matrix. A system that whoever controls the central banks, and the governments has created as a powerful monopoly to maximise profit. Doing so in a way that benefits the shareholders of whoever owns the world, far more so than it does ordinary people. Rob explains how to escape the money matrix and create your own mini-monopoly. A system that benefits you and generates the wealth and security so many of us seek. KEY TAKEAWAYS For every £10 you earn £7 is swallowed by the system. The central banks and government exercise a lot of control. You can use money to gain freedom. Having enough money means being able to live freely and comfortably while always beating the inflation rate. Becoming an entrepreneur enables you to create money that the system can´t control. Tax is your biggest expense. For an employed person, starting a side hustle is step one of controlling tax expenditure. Do what the banks do keep your money moving, keep investing and earning. How you invest depends on how much money you have and how dependent you are on it. Back yourself. Start by investing in what you know. BEST MOMENTS ‘What can you do without money, nowadays? Virtually nothing.' ‘The main way that you can create freedom is to have money and have money that the system can't control.' ‘Money enables a better delivery of your purpose.' ‘In 10 years, that is going to be worth half, so it´s not enough money anymore.' In less than a week, King Charles the Third will be crowned, sealed and delivered. Officially invested as the new King of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth and our official head of state. What a thing. In 2023. Which has led to a number of protests and general grumbling about the anachronism of the monarchy. Then to make things worse Charles wants us all to stand up and say this in the middle of the ceremony. “I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God” That's not going down well with some saying Swear At the King rather than Swear For the King. But that's not enough for me to go off the whole palava. I think it's a marvellous folly. A useful sideshow from the drudgery of everyday life. A bit of fun with a handy side serving of pragmatism and finance. Firstly why should the UK persevere with the monarchy? Well, it's a real money-spinner. A recent study found the British people paid 100 million pounds in costs to keep royalty running. In return, they got 1.7 billion pounds of benefit. That's an incredible return. The Royal Seals of Warrant keep firms in business and act as international calling cards. The King's farms sell 60 million pounds of goods all self-financed and the proceeds go to the Princes Trust charity which then funds programmes for the underprivileged. And then there's tourism. London is currently an orgy of overseas visitors and their capital. Even this station has got 4 members of staff there consuming hotel rooms, food, airfares and the like. The Royal Family is a goldmine for the UK and with Charles promising a slimmer and more modern set up they're only going to become more profitable. But then there's his position as head of State. But really what does that mean? In the UK he is irrelevant and he is kept out of the national conversation. If you worried about hereditary influence then the House of Lords is far more of a thing. For all the opponents of co-governance, how would you feel in the UK where the House of Lords has 777 members all given their place by appointment, who their daddy was or what their job is? Not a democratically elected member among them. But the King is not one of them. The King does not have a vote. Here he is represented by the Governor General. There is no interference and the powers exist as an unbiased external regulator just in case of an extreme breakdown in civil order. And in a country of just 5 million, that's important. I trust the Governor General and the Court of St James to adjudicate in the case of civil or democratic breakdown far more than I would trust a locally appointed President. For those who say having the King as Head of State is a sign that we're immature as a nation, I say stop virtue signalling. It ain't broke don't try to fix it. And finally, there's King Charles himself. A man who had a terrible childhood and absent parents and extraordinary interference in his personal life. But still came out of it as a complex man but with wisdom born of complex issues. I think he's going to be great. Far better than his spoilt sons and far more interesting than his cautious mother. Long live the King.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Jeannette talks to Jamie Waller who is a serial entrepreneur, author, philanthropist, and much more. He talks about how he shook up the debt enforcement sector. Jamie and Jeannette speak about why and how he wrote his book Unsexy Business which celebrates under-rated businesses. Ones that are essential and successful, but not appreciated. They also discuss how to overcome the lack of social mobility in the UK. As well as how he managed being betrayed in business. KEY TAKEAWAYS The debt enforcement business model is sound, yet many people do not view it positively. In the UK, the debt enforcement business has changed drastically, yet its reputation has still not been transformed. There are lots of unsexy businesses out there that are essential and successful yet are not appreciated. A lack of social mobility is still an issue in the UK. The Princes Trust really works. It is a great place for young people to learn how to start a business. In the UK, people still react negatively when people are successful in business. Be honest with yourself and clear about what your purpose is. Your purpose evolves over time. Retiring at the wrong time in your life leaves you purposeless. Put your best self forward, at all times. BEST MOMENTS ‘There are businesses that are brilliant and just because they're not shiny on the outside they are not respected.' ‘Everybody has the right to be paid what they are owed, but not at any cost.' ‘I'm not going to carry a grudge around.' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. Throughout the course of this podcast, as part of my many presentations and in discussions with numerous clients, I've talked a lot about the importance of multiple income streams. In a world that's constantly changing and with ever-evolving technology that repeatedly lowers the barriers to entry in regards to reaching your current and future customers, it's vital that we all keep on trying out different things and looking at different ways of promoting our products - in doing so we can all hope to build and run an effective and efficient business. In episode 89 of The Resilient Retail Game Plan, I speak to illustrator and founder of Plewsy, Fiona Fawcett. With a background in Graphic Design, Fiona started her business back in 2015 with the help of The Princes Trust, and after initially starting her small business journey selling wholesale, she's now added direct-to-consumer to her list of revenue streams and is a perfect example of a business owner who has embraced different ways of selling to great success. In this podcast, we discuss the importance of compartmentalising your time and how invaluable training yourself can be to the resilience of your business. We also discuss the renewed energy we've sensed around trade shows (post-lockdown), the value of interacting with your customers face-to-face, and how a hybrid model of selling offline and online is the future for a world where people want to buy less from big brands and more from people. Ep 9 is a round up of a load of good news which happened in the ESEA community in the past week, most of which was in the sports and entertainment space but there was one particular event which was a curve ball. Originally this was part recorded and supposed to drop on Sunday but the whole sound file got lost, thanks tech issues! So I recorded this late night mid week after work.A lot of really good things happened in the world of music and sports namely 88 Rising launching their radio station on Sirius XM, Rina Sawayama winning awards, gracing multiple front covers and just winning! Dumbfoundead getting his own radio show Dumb Early on the 88rising Radio station and many Asian artists guests featuring on the show. My one's to watch to be the next big thing are Year of the Ox and Luna Li.Sports, Korean NFL player Younghoe Koo is the highest scoring player in the league and in F1 Asian success are on the rise! For the first time there were two British East and South East Asians on the F1 grid (Alex Albon Ansusinha, British Thai and Jack Aitken, British South Korean Hapa). In F2 Yuki Tsunoda (Japan) wins the final race of the season and secures an F1 seat for 2021, whilst Guanyu Zhou (China) finished second. Asian success stories in western dominated sports! Amazing!Besea Poets was launched and spearheaded by Christy Ku @kukadoodles which is an amazing initiative giving a platform and collective space for ESEA poets in the UK to come together and share their art.The meat and bones of the episode is the but of the good news. The debacle surrounding Chef Philli Armitage-Mattin the self proclaimed Asian specialist Master Chef contestant who presented Asian food as 'dirty' monolith that needed refining. Making it part of her 'brand' to be one who refines it using the #prettydirtyfood and the phrase 'dirty food refined'. This cultural insensitivity spun out into something bigger and I go into how this stain on a white shirt just kept getting worse and spreading with every clean up attempt. The one good thing which came out of it to challenge the negativity and bring positive to Asian food however was the hashtag #ESEAEATS which aims to celebrate Asian food culture in the right way! Started by Chinese Chippy Girl (ep 6 guest Georgie Ma) and Anna Chan this was widely adopted and continues to grow with strength! When posting on your socials about Asian food be sure to use the #ESEAEATS to add to the positive vibes and energy! This episode is sponsored by Coul Recruitment, an English teaching recruitment agency offering overseas English speakers an opportunity to teach English in China, Korea or Japan. Alex Webb is an experienced coach and facilitator, working with young people on an individual basis and in teams to become resilient leaders. Alex focuses on behaviour change, self-awareness and the understanding of self. Her belief is that if you understand yourself, you can then understand others, allowing you to adapt your behaviour to improve relationships. Her business is called Flying Start and she has been working with The Princes Trust to help young adults with leadership skills and confidence in their Future Leaders Programme. They help young people understand the future of work and how they can be flexible and thereby gain confidence. Listen to this episode with Alex if you want to learn: What behaviour preferences are and how being able to make different behavioural choices increases our flexibility -leaving your comfort zone is easier in a safe environment How understanding yourself can help you to understand others How Colour-me profiling (a psychometric tool using colour to show behavioural preferences) can help you understand yourself and how you relate to others, including other members of the family How understanding behaviour preferences of others in the family can help you to realise the value they bring and to cultivate empathy as well as self-compassion How frustrations can arise from similar or different behavioural styles in work colleagues or family members How profiling that focuses on behaviours rather than personality types allows for more adaptability and more choice about how we're showing up in different contexts About the C-me profiling, how it relates to extroversion/introversion and how it helps people understand their strengths and preferences, but also why an individual might struggle in certain situations, like lockdown! How understanding your child's behavioural preferences allows you to do bespoke parenting for the children you've got How older children understanding their own behavioural preferences, and particularly their ‘native genius' allows them to make better choices for their academic options and careers Alex shares stories from her own life with her sons that highlight how understanding everybody's behavioural preferences avoids conflict. She talks about Surprising Uplifting Moments from lockdown and like many parents has loved having time together as a family and to focus on self-care. Family Horrible Histories were a highlight! Alex also shares with us her number one tip for raising children with different needs and different ways of hearing things and understanding things.
