Episode 125 of A is for Architecture is a conversation with historian Dr Jessica Kelly, Reader in Design and Architectural History at London Metropolitan University. We discuss her 2022 book, No More Giants: J.M. Richards, Modernism and The Architectural Review, published by Manchester University Press. It's an interesting story, one that mirrors the development of the profession, and perhaps even produces it to some extent. As Jess says, 'I think Richards, although he would completely align himself, and he writes about being a modernist and seeing that as the future of architecture, he is also quite invested in the figure of the architect and the expertise of the architectural profession as a cultural elite, as a sort of guiding figure within society. And he wants to promote that the magazine is invested in promoting the profession, because as much as the Architectural Review is, as it's been described, a mouthpiece for modernism, and really does feature modernism a lot, it features a lot of other stuff as well. [there is] very much a plurality of conversations happening in [it]. […] I think for Richard and his circle and network of people, there is an overlap between [ideology and business and] the idea of whether someone's a consumer or a citizen blurs together in quite an interesting way. And for Richards and his contemporaries, their main objective is to get a public audience for what they understand to be the future of architecture.' Jessica can be found on the London Met website, and the book is linked above.   Thanks for listening. +  Music credits: Bruno Gillick

The title of this year's Design History Society Annual Conference is Border Control: Excursion, Incursion and Exclusion and for this episode of A is for Architecture, three of the conference's convenors, Dr Jessica Kelly, Professor Victoria Kelley and Professor Cat Rossi, took a bit of time to talk about it with me.  The conference blurb states: ‘Whether geopolitical, human and non-human, or digital and physical, the solidification and liquification of borders raises questions around design's role in creating, undoing and negotiating divides.'  I don't know very much, but I know what I like. And I very like the sound of this. The conference website is linked above. Jessica can be found at her London Met profile here, and Cat and Victoria can be found at UCA here and  here. The UK has cracked down on anti-immigration protests and "armchair thugs," which is newspeak for people who post memes on the internet. The Police Chief of the London Met has even threatened to extradite American memers who have violated UK hate speech laws so that they can face the crown's judgement.  Meanwhile, in the free-speech-loving USA, the legacy media has created a Kamala Harris presidential campaign out of whole cloth, and have shut Donald Trump out of almost any coverage. When millions of people listened to him having an unscripted conversation with Elon Musk on X last night, journalists and news outlets panicked that he was making an end-run around the "appropriate channels" to speak directly to citizens.  According to Open Source Defense yesterday, "Tyranny is here, it's just not evenly distributed."

I woke up at 0300 today unable to fall back asleep, so I got up, poured a cup of coffee and decided to use my time to record an episode. As I ate breakfast and rubbed the sleep from my eyes, I came across a story on several UK officer's social media pages regarding the London Met banning the thin blue line flag. Officers in the UK have it tough, and so this response, while based entirely on my personal opinions, is my way to show them support.  Stay safe out there, and thank you for continuing to support the channel.

I got to hear about their 2017 book, Loose Fit City: The Contribution of Bottom-Up Architecture to Urban Design and Planning, published by Routledge, which is ‘about the ways in which city residents can learn through making to engage with the dynamic process of creating their own city. It looks at the nature and processes involved in loosely fitting together'. The idea of loose in the sense of [a] loose fit city, Bo suggests in our conversation, may be defined as ‘bringing together different intentions, or allowing them to come together in a way that more than one party is able to contribute to the conversation, to the decision making process, to have a voice across scale, across time to try and come to an understanding of shared matters of concern that may then lead to a civic assembly'. As before, lovely guests, a wonderful, inspiring book and proper, easy conversation. Listen, share, want, get. You can get Loose Fit City off the Routledge website here but also elsewhere online. Ep 9 is a round up of a load of good news which happened in the ESEA community in the past week, most of which was in the sports and entertainment space but there was one particular event which was a curve ball. Originally this was part recorded and supposed to drop on Sunday but the whole sound file got lost, thanks tech issues! So I recorded this late night mid week after work.A lot of really good things happened in the world of music and sports namely 88 Rising launching their radio station on Sirius XM, Rina Sawayama winning awards, gracing multiple front covers and just winning! Dumbfoundead getting his own radio show Dumb Early on the 88rising Radio station and many Asian artists guests featuring on the show. My one's to watch to be the next big thing are Year of the Ox and Luna Li.Sports, Korean NFL player Younghoe Koo is the highest scoring player in the league and in F1 Asian success are on the rise! For the first time there were two British East and South East Asians on the F1 grid (Alex Albon Ansusinha, British Thai and Jack Aitken, British South Korean Hapa). In F2 Yuki Tsunoda (Japan) wins the final race of the season and secures an F1 seat for 2021, whilst Guanyu Zhou (China) finished second. Asian success stories in western dominated sports! Amazing!Besea Poets was launched and spearheaded by Christy Ku @kukadoodles which is an amazing initiative giving a platform and collective space for ESEA poets in the UK to come together and share their art.The meat and bones of the episode is the but of the good news. The debacle surrounding Chef Philli Armitage-Mattin the self proclaimed Asian specialist Master Chef contestant who presented Asian food as 'dirty' monolith that needed refining. Making it part of her 'brand' to be one who refines it using the #prettydirtyfood and the phrase 'dirty food refined'. This cultural insensitivity spun out into something bigger and I go into how this stain on a white shirt just kept getting worse and spreading with every clean up attempt. The one good thing which came out of it to challenge the negativity and bring positive to Asian food however was the hashtag #ESEAEATS which aims to celebrate Asian food culture in the right way! Started by Chinese Chippy Girl (ep 6 guest Georgie Ma) and Anna Chan this was widely adopted and continues to grow with strength! When posting on your socials about Asian food be sure to use the #ESEAEATS to add to the positive vibes and energy! This episode is sponsored by Coul Recruitment, an English teaching recruitment agency offering overseas English speakers an opportunity to teach English in China, Korea or Japan. When in Rome - or London as it were - why only settle for one live event when you can have two? On November 17th, hours before the big podcasting event at The Roebuck, the two Alexes were invited by Danielle D'Hayer, course leader of the MA Conference Interpreting at London Metropolitan University, to join her and a group of students in their language lab for a lively Q&A session. The students contributed many questions ahead of time and even "on the fly" on the day and had an interesting discussion. Questions include (among others): most difficult speakers, how to prepare for an assignment, how to deal with stressful situations or how to best chose a new language you want to learn. Thanks again to Danielle D’Hayer and London Met alumnus Hugo Menendez who helped put this event together.

The UK Border Agency recently revoked London Metropolitan University's licence to sponsor overseas students, meaning that it can no longer recruit or continue to teach current students. According to the Government, the UKBA found systemic failings in the way the university managed its records. It found that many students did not have permission to study in the UK, did not have the correct English language or academic qualifications, while in other cases there was not enough evidence students were attending their courses. London Met on the other hand does not recognise these problems, and is taking legal against the UKBA's decision. Wesley Stephenson asks why the licence was revoked. Has London Met been lax in its recruitment and monitoring of students, or has it fallen victim of a complicated visa system? Why did the UKBA act now? Was there overwhelming evidence of systemic failings, or was there political pressure to take tough action?
