'Chinese and Any Other Asian.' On official documents, a vast range of identities in the East and South East Asian (ESEA) population in the UK is reduced to a single vague checkbox, an act of Othering with a history several centuries in the making. Academic, poet, and journalist Dr Anna Sulan Masing seeks to change the narrative. Exploring the history of the ESEA population in the UK, which spans on the one hand Empire, violence, and appropriation, and on the other, creativity, fusion, and multiplicity, Anna Sulan reveals a multifaceted history. From how the mythos of MSG drew on the language of Victorian media on opium dens, to why we should close the chapter on Miss Saigon for good, Anna Sulan reveals the rising voices reclaiming a stolen narrative. Curator Jo-Lene Ong walks through historic marketplaces across Taiwan, Paris, Devon, London, and Manchester, exchanging island mentality for more archipelagic thinking, via Steph Huang's sculptural installation, I Am in a Pretty Pickle (2024). Through works combining sculpture, sound, and film, contemporary artist Steph Huang explores mass production, consumption, and waste. She often focusses on the transcultural and historical dimensions of food industries, and the implications of such markets on our natural environment. Roaming the street markets of cities in Taiwan, where she was born, and London, where she lives and works, she also draws from their vernacular architectures, and different local cultures. Steph's first exhibition at Tate Britain in London sits near the river Thames, a boat ride away from Billingsgate, the UK's largest inland fish market; and in Manchester, at its historic Market Buildings, once part of the Victorian Smithfield Fish Market. Curator Jo-Lene Ong connects sculptural works like I Am in a Pretty Pickle (2024), with the Situationist International's practice of the dérive, repurposing objects collected through exploration. We situate her interest in wonder and playful approach to media with the likes of Haegue Yang, currently on view at the Hayward Gallery in London, and Rasheed Araeen, entwining the roles of cook and artist. We look at the traces of maritime trades and food industries on our everyday lives, and our relationship with ocean ecosystems, highlighting the legacies of colonialism in contemporary capitalism and climate crises. From esea contemporary's previous exhibitions of artists like Jane Jin Kaisen, Jo-Lene moves towards her particular interest in transmission, and more ‘watery ways of being' beyond borders, referencing Astrida Neimanis' hydrofeminism (2017) and looking to Sharjah Biennale 16 in 2025. We discuss ‘island travel' and ‘archipelagic thinking' as central to Steph's artistic, and Jo-Lene's curatorial, practices. Jo-Lene shares how her relationship with identity has been shaped by working in different contexts, from Malaysia, to Amsterdam, and the UK. We discuss the relative in/visibility of East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) identities in these different places - histories of Indonesia and the Dutch East Indies, and Malaysia, a British colony between the 1820s and 1957 - as well as the overlaps between Hokkein and Taiwanese languages, as variants or dialects of Chinese. Steph Huang: There is nothing old under the sun runs at esea contemporary in Manchester until 8 December 2024. The exhibition is part of the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award (MTSA)'s National Touring Programme, first exhibited at Standpoint in London in 2024. The exhibition will tour to Cross Lane Projects in Kendal in March 2025. An exhibition book of the same number launches at esea contemporary on 30 November 2024. Today's episode is the inaugural roundtable discussion where The Narrative podcast hosts are joined by experts to take a deep dive into a particularly complex topic–equipping you with the understanding necessary to make informed decisions as a Christian. Odds are you've likely seen the heavy media bias against Ohio's school choice expansion this past year, extolling the cost, claiming it's a misuse of taxpayer funds, and decrying private schools as the lesser education option. Aaron Churchill and Rabbi Yitz Frank join CCV's Ohio Christian Education Network Executive Director Troy McIntosh and podcast hosts CCV President Aaron Baer and Communications Director Mike Andrews to unpack why these common anti-school choice arguments are based on cherry-picked data or fail to consider the most important factor in school choice--parental satisfaction. Ready for an in-depth breakdown of school choice fact vs. fiction? Don't miss today's special edition episode! More about the Experts Rabbi Eric “Yitz” Frank serves as President of School Choice Ohio and the executive director of Agudath Israel of Ohio since 2013. Again that’s ClassicalConversations.com. https://www.newsmax.com/world/globaltalk/brazil-amazon-environment-drought/2023/09/26/id/1135958/ Brazil's Amazon Rainforest Faces a Severe Drought That May Affect around 500,000 People The Amazon rainforest in Brazil is facing a severe drought that may affect around 500,000 people by the end of the year, authorities said Tuesday. Many are already struggling to access essential supplies such as food and water, because the principal means of transportation in the region is waterways, and river levels are historically low. Droughts also impact fishing, a means of subsistence for many riverside communities. Amazonas state declared an environmental emergency two weeks ago in response to the prolonged drought and launched a response plan valued at $20 million. Authorities will also distribute food and water supplies as well as personal hygiene kits, the state’s civil defense agency said in a statement. Gov. Wilson Lima was in Brazil’s capital, Brasilia, on Tuesday to meet with representatives of the federal government. Lima spoke with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to discuss the drought. The different levels of government will “coordinate measures in support of the people living in the affected municipalities,” Lima said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday. Fifteen municipalities were in a state of emergency on Tuesday, while 40 others were on a state of alert, the civil defense authority said. According to the port of Manaus, which monitors water levels, the river stood at 16.7 meters (55 feet) on Tuesday, around six meters (20 feet) below the same day last year. The lowest level of water was recorded on Oct. 24, 2010, when the river dropped to 13.6 meters (about 45 feet). The drought is forecast to last longer and be more intense because of El Niño climate phenomenon, which inhibits the formation of rain clouds, the civil defense authority said. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/house-approves-bill-striking-down-bidens-crackdown-hunting-archery-overwhelmingly-bipartisan-vote House approves bill striking down Biden's crackdown on hunting and archery in overwhelmingly bipartisan vote The House voted late Tuesday evening in favor of legislation striking down the Biden administration's decision to block federal funding for school shooting sports courses. In a 424-1 vote, the House approved the Protecting Hunting Heritage and Education Act with 216 Republicans and 208 Democrats voting in favor, and just one lawmaker, Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, voting against. Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., introduced the bill on Aug. 1, days after a Fox News Digital report in late July revealed the Department of Education was withholding funds for school hunting and archery courses. "Hunters and fishers are the best conservationists," Green told Fox News Digital after the vote Tuesday. "Hunting, whether it be with a firearm or bow, is one of the most effective ways to control wildlife populations, protect our beautiful lands, and connect with nature. My Protecting Hunting Heritage and Education Act is critical for our children." He added in a separate statement that American students should be encouraged to "participate in enriching athletic activities that foster an appreciation for nature and the ability to focus on a goal." According to Green, in his state alone, the Biden administration's funding decision impacts an estimated 50,000 students. Fox News Digital reported in July that the Education Department shared federal guidance to hunting education groups highlighting that hunting and archery programs in schools would be stripped of funding. The guidance explained that the administration interpreted the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) to mean such programs can no longer receive taxpayer funds. In the guidance, obtained first by Fox News Digital, senior agency official Sarah Martinez wrote that archery, hunter education and wilderness safety courses use weapons that are "technically dangerous weapons" and therefore "may not be funded under" the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which is the primary source of federal aid for elementary and secondary education across the country. According to advocates, many schools that offer such courses have already nixed them from curriculums due to the federal guidance. "The Department of Education and Secretary Cardona are blatantly misconstruing the law to withhold funding from schools that choose to teach beneficial courses like hunter safety and archery," Lawrence Keane, the National Shooting Sports Foundation's senior vice president, told Fox News Digital in July. "Congress must hold Secretary Cardona and the department accountable for violating the letter and spirit of the law to unilaterally deny America’s students access to these valuable programs as part of the Administration’s continued attacks on the Second Amendment," Keane added. Tommy Floyd, the president of the National Archery in the Schools Program, said his organization boasts roughly 1.3 million students from nearly 9,000 schools across 49 states who are enrolled in archery courses. However, the Department of Education has doubled down on its interpretation of the BSCA, saying it would only reverse course if legislation was passed explicitly revising the 2022 law to allow funding for shooting sport programs in schools. The law included an amendment to a subsection in the ESEA listing that prohibited uses for federal school funding. That amendment prohibits ESEA funds from helping provide any person with a dangerous weapon or to provide "training in the use of a dangerous weapon," but, according to the BSCA's sponsors, was included to prevent ESEA funding for school resource officer training. https://www.foxnews.com/us/philadelphia-swarmed-alleged-juvenile-looters-targeting-apple-store-lululemon-footlocker-others Philadelphia swarmed by alleged juvenile looters targeting the Apple Store, Lululemon, Footlocker and others Philadelphia police responded to popular retailers like the Apple Store, Lululemon and Footlocker after they were allegedly being ravaged by swarms of looters taking over the City of Brotherly Love Tuesday evening. At about 8 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to reports of large crowds of juveniles allegedly looting stores in the Center City business corridor of the 9th District. "In a proactive measure, officers from the 9th District stopped a group of males dressed in black attire and wearing masks at the intersection of 17th and Chestnut Streets," a police spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News Digital. As of midnight on Wednesday, police confirmed between 15 and 20 people were arrested during the looting and at least two firearms were recovered. As officers were speaking with these individuals, they began to receive reports of looting at the Foot Locker on Chestnut Street. Responding officers arrived at the Foot Locker and discovered the store had been ransacked in a "coordinated attack," according to the statement. A number of juveniles then fled the scene and at least one adult was arrested. Subsequent incidents of looting were reported in quick succession. Officers responded to a report of looting at the Lululemon on Walnut Street, where multiple individuals were apprehended. A short time later, looting was reported at the Apple Store on Walnut Street. No arrests were made in connection with this incident. Phones and tablets were taken from the store, but several stolen items have since been recovered. Videos posted to X, showed retail stores like Lululemon, the Apple Store and Footlocker ravaged by crowds of looters. FOX 29's Steve Keeley obtained video of a ransacked Apple Store with iPhones and iPads scattered across the display tables. Keeley wrote on X that many of the stolen Apple products were left behind due to the device's comprehensive anti-theft technology. A police officer told local outlet WCAU-TV that more than 100 juveniles took items from the Lululemon store. No injuries were immediately reported, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. Police also responded to several other reports of property damage and thefts throughout the city. "The Philadelphia Police Department is committed to maintaining public safety and order," police said in the statement Wednesday morning. "We are actively investigating these incidents and working diligently to identify and apprehend those responsible for these unlawful acts. We appreciate the cooperation of our community and urge anyone with information related to these incidents to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigations." The statement continued: "We would like to thank our dedicated officers who swiftly responded to these incidents, as well as our community members who continue to support law enforcement efforts to keep Philadelphia safe." The looting came following a Philadelphia judge dismissed charges against former police officer Mark Dial in the shooting death of 27-year-old Eddie Irizarry. Interim Commissioner John Stanford said in a press conference that the thieves were not part of the peaceful protest against the judge's decision. "This had nothing to do with the protests," Stanford said. "What we had tonight was a bunch of criminal opportunists take advantage of a situation to make an attempt to destroy our city." The news comes as Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw resigned in the beginning of September. Crime data from the Philadelphia Police Department shows there has been a 21% drop in homicides this year to date compared to the same day in 2021, when the city recorded 562 homicides throughout the year. But prior to Outlaw leading the department, the data shows Philadelphia annually recorded between 246 to 391 homicides each year between 2007 and 2019. In 2020, when she took over, there were 499 homicides, followed by 562 in 2021 and 516 in 2022. Meanwhile in California…. In August, a Nordstrom store was ransacked by a "flash mob" of more than 30 people in a large smash-and-grab. The thieves made out with nearly $100,000 worth of designer handbags and clothes. Similarly to Philadelphia, video captured shows a group of 30 to 50 people wearing sweatshirts with hoods over their heads. The suspects are seen inside the department store as they rush to the front entrance with bags in hand, scooping up whatever merchandise they can while tripping on racks to which some items were still attached. Police estimate the stolen merchandise to be worth between $60,000 and $100,000. https://www.dailyfetched.com/wuhan-institute-of-virology-warns-the-world-prepare-for-another-covid-19-pandemic/ Wuhan Institute of Virology Warns the World: Prepare for Another COVID-19 Pandemic As many as 20 coronavirus species are likely to cause a new outbreak, according to a study from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), a stark warning to prepare for another COVID-19 pandemic. In a study in Emerging Microbes & Infections in July, the WIV has been making headlines, as many social media users have begun coming to their own conclusions online. The Wuhan scientists documented their study of 40 coronavirus species, identifying 20 as “high risk … including 6 of which jumped to human, 3 with evidence of spillover but not to human and 11 without evidence of spillover yet.” “It is almost certain that there will be future disease emergence, and it is highly likely a CoV [coronavirus] disease again,” the study said. “Thus, the early preparation for the animal CoVs with risk of spillover is important for future disease preparedness, regarding the likely animal origin of SARS, MERS, and COVID-19.” SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) is a disease that caused a deadly outbreak in China over 20 years ago. MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) is a coronavirus disease first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. The study’s auhtors included Shi Zhengli, a Chinese coronavirus expert known as “batwoman” for her academic studies on the coronavirus. She became a figure of international focus during the coronavirus pandemic. Shi stopped public appearances in early 2020 but reemerged to defend the Chinese government from claims that the coronavirus came from a lab in Wuhan.

So this episode I record and post on my actual birthday and reflect on the journey of the past year, how things have developed and what the effect has been on my life. It's a bit of a whistle stop tour of what the past year with Crazy Brit Asian by yours truly.Addressing the elephant in the room, long time no pod episode! But that's because I've been super busy with organising, producing and hosting the Ripples In The Wave concert. A lot of work went into pulling this together so the episodes had to take a hit but it was totally worth it! A lil more on that later as before all of that and what led to it even coming into fruition is all the developments CBA had to go through to build such a foundation to take it on in the first place.I talk about how this was an idea inspired by Dumbfoundead and the Fun With Dumb podcast 3 years ago, how the ESEA landscape back then was minimal and very poorly represented. Who was the catalyst that triggered me and a wave of other podcasters to pic up the mic and hit record. As you can tell, things have changed drastically now with greater awareness of the nuances of the ESEA community. A lot of steps have been taken but there's still a lot to do as a community. The podcast has also opened many doors and collaboration opportunities such as the interview with Dumbfoundead, which led to interviews and developing relationships with the rest of the FWD crew and recognition on Clubhouse to get further guest collaborations. As the ESEA community has grown immensely, it's been an honour to have been a contributor to it and met a large number of others who've helped with making great strides too at besea.n's celebratory birthday event and also the celebration of the UK's first nationally recognised ESEA Heritage Month! So to wrap up this historic month in the UK I decided to make a bit of history myself by throwing a concert looking to the future. Together with help from WAV Collective and Sound of Plus 82, I organised, produced and hosted my first concert event which focused on up and coming east and southeast asian artists in the UK. The only other time this has happened outside of Asia is 88rising's annual Head in the Clouds concert in LA. As we know, the ESEA community is still massively underrepresented in the UK so this was well overdue and is the first ripple in a bigger wave.As for what's next for this pod, you'll just have to listen to find out. Follow on socials and holla if you feel like it. Peace!@crazybritasian

I'm absolutely delighted to collaborate with Chinatown London for my latest episode where I talk to Lucy, Managing Director of See Woo Group and Emily who runs Cuppacha and Taiyakiya.Lucy and Emily spoke about their journey of running a business in the heart of London.  It was  so nice to chat with them and share our experiences of what Chinatown London means to us and discussing how diverse it is with more and more ESEA shops and food stalls/restaurants opening. For me, Chinatown London brings a lot of memories of when my mum and dad used to take me here when I was at school.  Shopping for dried vegetables that mum would put in her soup and buying endless supplies of Chinese bakery.  When I first moved to London in 2007, there were times when I missed my family, I would go to Chinatown London for comfort and it's always been such a joyous place. I have Chinatown London to thank for my entire London experience. In light of ESEA Heritage Month, Chinatown London have put together a campaign #OurChinatown to explore what Chinatown means to people who have stepped foot in Chinatown London.  What's your greatest memory of Chinatown London? I'm back from my break of podcasting and my first guest of series 2 is Maisie Chan.  Maisie is a BBC (British born Chinese) childrens author.  She has recently launched 2 books, Danny Chung does not do maths (or Danny Chung sums it up in the US) and Tiger Warrior.  Also, Amy wants a pet which is my daughter's favourite book.  Maisie also runs Bubble Tea Writers Network that supports and encourages ESEA writers in the UK.We also talk about a short story called Brian Wong who was never, ever wrong (written by David Walliams and illustrated by Tony Ross) on how the story has used harmful stereotypes to depict the Chinese community.  Which is why the ESEA community need better representation to show the real culture and not the negative stereotypes or the model minority myth. Please follow Maisie on https://www.instagram.com/maisiechanwrites or checkout her website https://www.maisiechan.com/ for more info on her books and Bubble Tea Writers Network. You can also find me on https://www.instagram.com/chinesechippygirl

Episode 21! My pod is now a worldwide adult... I guess? So to commemorate the occasion and grant it a knighthood, all the way from the United Zingdom, I welcome the very accomplished Zing Tsjeng to the pod! We start by talking about what was it like growing up in Singapore and watching it transform from vast wildlife green land to the current metropolis we know it to be today. What drew her to move to the UK, her experience of expectations vs reality when she first arrived and how there's a lot that the Brits can learn from Singapore, especially when it comes to food!We find out about her journalistic journey, overcoming challenges of industry representation, what's it like writing for Vice and the pieces she's written which focus on stories within the ESEA community. Pieces such as Rina Sawayama's Brits & Mercury awards breakthrough, addressing Asian hate in the UK in Harpers Bazaar and top tips for being an ally.At the time of recording the Stop ESEA Hate Fund had only just been announced the day before, so it was a no brainer to talk about the whole process of how it all happened and the amazing response it's gotten thus far! Be sure to continue supporting by donating if you are able to and reposting on your socials! All funds go towards supporting grassroots organisations in the UK. Find out more at: https://gofund.me/e8e79719It was truly an honour and a pleasure to have such an instrumental figure as my guest and be sure to keep an eye out on all her upcoming work as she continues to be the much needed voice of our community in mainstream media. In this episode, the legendary takeaway owner from Jade Park joins us for this episode. Jade (or should I say James) went from working in IT to running his own takeaway. He's also the Co-Founder of 'Asians in the UK' on Clubhouse every Monday at 8pm. A room where they have built a community on ESEA people and allies to come together and talk about important topics such as hate crime on Asians. A very honest conversation where I admitted to some mistakes on internalised racism and why I am unlearning and relearning.I also share my thoughts on the mass shootings that have happened in Atlanta, America and why we should be more careful on using the words 'massage parlour'.Please give Jade Park a follow: https://www.instagram.com/jvdepvrk and if you're in Moreton, Wirral, definitely place an order with them.
