Send us a textJehoiada & Jehoshabeath: Faithful to the EndThe story of Jehoiada ("Joe") and Jehoshabeath ("Beth") demonstrates how elderly believers can have tremendous impact even in their final decades.Age 83When evil Queen Athaliah destroyed the royal offspring to take the throne, "Joe" (about 83 years old) and "Beth" (around 80) rescued little Joash and hid him in the house of God.Age 90After protecting Joash for 7 years, "Joe" orchestrated his coronation as king at age 7, confronted the wicked queen Athaliah, and helped restore proper worship.Age 90-130For the next 40 years, "Joe" served as a mentor and spiritual guide to King Joash, helping him reign righteously.Age 130"Joe" died at the remarkable age of 130, having served God faithfully for 47 years from age 83-130.Tragically, after Jehoiada's death, Joash turned away from God and even had Jehoiada's son Zechariah executed when he prophesied against the king's unfaithfulness. This reminds us that while we can have tremendous influence, each person must ultimately make their own choices before God.Support the show"Finishing Well Ministries aims to encourage and inspire aging Christians to understand and embrace God's calling in their later years, equipping them to actively pursue and fulfill His calling. Send us a textOur story regarding Eli begins not with Eli but with God's judge who will succeed him. God's successor to Eli will be the great prophet/judge Samuel so we begin with his birth and background.Samuel's BirthSamuel was born out of a godly family (1 Samuel 1.1-2.11). Hannah prayed for a son and promised to dedicate him to the Lord. Eli blessed her prayer, and when Samuel was weaned, Hannah brought him to serve in the temple under Eli.Eli's FailureBy contrast, Eli's sons were wicked men (1 Samuel 2.12-17). They abused their priestly position and "despised the offering of the Lord." Though Eli knew of their sins, he did not restrain them. Why do you kick at My sacrifice and at My offering which I have commanded in My dwelling, and honor your sons above Me? (1 Samuel 2.29).God revealed to Samuel the judgment that He would carry out on Eli because he did not rebuke his sons (1 Samuel 3.10-14). When the Philistines defeated Israel and captured the ark of God, both of Eli's sons were killed. Upon hearing the news, Eli fell backward from his seat, broke his neck, and died at age 98.The tragedy extended to the next generation 3 Eli's daughter-in-law died in childbirth, naming her son Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel."Support the show"Finishing Well Ministries aims to encourage and inspire aging Christians to understand and embrace God's calling in their later years, equipping them to actively pursue and fulfill His calling. I just just loving God passionately with his heart dancing before God. I mean, he was enjoying life with God. But there are a lot of lessons to learn from his life. I have the text there, and you can follow them all in your handout as well, but follow these texts, and let's learn from his his life in the next few minutes. In Second Samuel chapter 23 he lists out more than 30 friends who have shaped his life. I mean, that's a good discipline. Send us a textWe meet Joshua first when he was selected as one of the 12 tribes to spy out the new land from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun (Numbers 13.8).Early FaithJoshua (along with Caleb) spoke with confidence about how God would take them into the promised land and defeat the enemies. He had great confidence in God who would be with them.If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and he will give it to us, a land that is flowing with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against Yahweh, and you will not fear the people of the land, because they will be our food. Their protection has been turned from them; Yahweh is with us. You should not fear them. (Numbers 14.8-9)Leadership in Later YearsAt 80 years of age, Joshua was entrusted with the task of leading Israel after Moses' death. God commanded him:Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go. (Joshua 1.6-7)Throughout the conquest and throughout his life, Joshua remained full of faith and trust in the Lord. As he came to the end of his life, he challenged the children of Israel with these famous words:If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Send us a textAs I think about the life of Naomi and how she lived her later years, I cannot help but think of a principle that we learn in the Advent story 3 you cannot tell the end from the beginning. Apart from the Old Testament promises of the Messiah ad the angelic announcements of Messiah's birth, the majestic destiny of Jesus might never be guessed from His humble beginnings and surroundings. As we read the opening lines of Naomi's story one might never guess how the story will end. How anyone lives out the final years of life, like Naomi, is learned as we intentionally trust our lives to a sovereign God and live obediently following His hand.Naomi's story begins with incredible hardship. Now it came about in the days when the judges governed, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the land of Moab with his wife and his two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife, Naomi; and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem in Judah. Now they entered the land of Moab and remained there. Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left with her two sons. They took for themselves Moabite women as wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. And they lived there about ten years. Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died, and the woman was bereft of her two children and her husband (Ruth 1.1-5).Support the show"Finishing Well Ministries aims to encourage and inspire aging Christians to understand and embrace God's calling in their later years, equipping them to actively pursue and fulfill His calling. Hal encourages continuous service to God, regardless of age, and stresses that retirement does not diminish one's mission. Ken emphasizes the cultural shift in how children transition to adulthood, noting the lack of a universally agreed-upon method. He highlights the importance of signaling to children that they are seen as adults and respecting their choices. They also touch on the impact of cultural changes, such as expressive individualism, on identity and the isolation it creates. Randy and I will follow with more friendship insights in future podcasts. When I think of rich friendships, my mind runs to a great quote from C.S. Lewis. Enjoy it.In friendship, we think we have chosen our peers. In reality, a few years' difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another, the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting---any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking, no chances. A secret Master of Ceremonies and Divine Connector has been at work. Christ, who said to the disciples, "you have not chosen me, but I have chosen you". Jesus can truly say to every group of Christian friends, "you have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another."Friendship is not a reward for our discrimination and good taste in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals to each of us the beauties of all the others. C. S. Lewis. “While the 4th Essential deals with investing in generations that follow us, we discover that there are choices younger people may make that are contrary to their parents' values. While independence from parents is expected and planned (we raise our kids for independence), sometimes younger people outwardly reject the values of church and family. There are so many things to think about in the topic of “Aging.” We want to address one of those aspects today – the aspect of “Letting go.” Aging teaches us know what it means to let go – “letting go” is a new season of learning – aging teaches us about limits – life changes - churches ought to have active plans to be with and encourage those who are learning to let go as life changes/narrow – as we age. We've been learning about this ever since our kids grew up and left our homes. Change is a “letting go” of realities and expectations as we have known them. Death may be a final form of “letting go” – letting go of loved ones and friends – ultimately “letting go” of this life and anticipating heaven and eternity.Email us: Hal@finishingwellministries.orgFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/finishingwellministriesSupport Our Ministry: https://www.finishingwellministries.org/donateAre there biblical principles to help us understand how to finish well?Join Dr. Habecker LIVE on ZOOM for a greater understanding of the SEVEN Essentials to Finishing Life Well: https://www.finishingwellministries.org/upcoming-eventsThanks for listening as we all strive to live and finish life well!
There are any number of spheres through which God can use us to make a difference in His kingdom. We can envision this truth through a series of concentric circles – begin with knowing yourself and discover anew how God is calling and leading you to serve and encourage other in the following areas of life - spouse, family, friends and neighbors, and church. Then there may be various volunteer agencies, mission agencies, and local/world needs where God may be leading you to serve. We believe the Spirit of God directs us in all these arenas as we listen to and seek Him.Email us: Hal@finishingwellministries.orgFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/finishingwellministriesSupport Our Ministry: https://www.finishingwellministries.org/donateAre there biblical principles to help us understand how to finish well?Join Dr. Habecker LIVE on ZOOM for a greater understanding of the SEVEN Essentials to Finishing Life Well: https://www.finishingwellministries.org/upcoming-eventsThanks for listening as we all strive to live and finish life well!
Finishing Well during the Christmas season may not be “picture perfect.” While we will send and receive countless Christmas cards with pictures of our families that are “picture perfect,” real life is often somewhat chaotic. The 3 or 4 generations in our families will have differing agendas. How do we as the patriarchs and matriarchs listen to and enjoy those who may be totally different in various ways. How do we love? How do we listen? How do we influence? How do we encourage? Let's continue to “finish well” this Christmas season.Email us: Hal@finishingwellministries.orgFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/finishingwellministriesSupport Our Ministry: https://www.finishingwellministries.org/donateAre there biblical principles to help us understand how to finish well?Join Dr. Habecker LIVE on ZOOM for a greater understanding of the SEVEN Essentials to Finishing Life Well: https://www.finishingwellministries.org/upcoming-eventsThanks for listening as we all strive to live and finish life well!
Grief may often be a part of the Christmas season. The loss of a spouse, a family member, thedisappointments and loss of friends and relationships, illnesses, hospitalizations, and other various lifechanges will detract from the joy of the season. Grief is real and is a part of life (Ecclesiastes 3.4). Even ifthe grief is not your grief personally, you will probably be with others during this season who grieve. Wepray that these thoughts will be helpful.Email us: Hal@finishingwellministries.orgFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/finishingwellministriesSupport Our Ministry: https://www.finishingwellministries.org/donateAre there biblical principles to help us understand how to finish well?Join Dr. Habecker LIVE on ZOOM for a greater understanding of the SEVEN Essentials to Finishing Life Well: https://www.finishingwellministries.org/upcoming-eventsThanks for listening as we all strive to live and finish life well!
Our 1st of the 7 Essentials is GROWTH. We Will GROW – we will not stay the same. Growth is the underpinning of nearly everything in life. Growth is always life-giving. If we are not growing we are not life-giving. Hal and Randy explore the value of Growth in all of life.“If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we aren't really living.” Gail SheehyEmail us: Hal@finishingwellministries.orgFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/finishingwellministriesSupport Our Ministry: https://www.finishingwellministries.org/donateAre there biblical principles to help us understand how to finish well?Join Dr. Habecker LIVE on ZOOM for a greater understanding of the SEVEN Essentials to Finishing Life Well: https://www.finishingwellministries.org/upcoming-eventsThanks for listening as we all strive to live and finish life well!
The 2nd Essential is “Being Connected.” We will CONNECT – we will not live alone – we will continue to build strong friendships – we will stay connected and encourage each other. Friendships make all the difference. While the aging process often leads to isolation and greater loneliness, staying connect with growing friendships makes a tremendous difference in life. That is God's design for friendships. Christ went above and beyond in His great love for us and therefore calls us to give away our lives for others around us. This could be our families, people in our communities, even the most unexpected people He may bring into our lives that aren't like us. This is the distinguishing mark of the Church in the world andGod is calling us to be those kinds of people. We are to be His arms and His hands to those in need as we go through life, beginning in our homes.Email us: Hal@finishingwellministries.orgFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/finishingwellministriesSupport Our Ministry: https://www.finishingwellministries.org/donateAre there biblical principles to help us understand how to finish well?Join Dr. Habecker LIVE on ZOOM for a greater understanding of the SEVEN Essentials to Finishing Life Well: https://www.finishingwellministries.org/upcoming-eventsThanks for listening as we all strive to live and finish life well!
