Welcome everyone to our show! This week we are talking about the history of Mascots! This history is tough to pin down as the definition of 'mascots' has morphed and changed over time. Starting in early Provencal, or Occitan, history it was a term used for a witch. Later changing to a being, or item, that could change your fortune; a good luck charm. It was not until the comic Operetta "La Mascotte" hit the stages of France in 1881 that the word full entered the lexicon of French and English speakers. That Opera also, allowed Macotte's to be humans, and not just tickets or animals. As the word, and idea, made its way to America it began to morph again. Especially superstitious baseball Players took hold of this word and would find other humans, usually children, to be their mascots and bring them luck. Honestly, the history is pretty sad here. If you would like to know more listen in and find out this weird and fascinating history. Thank you Isaac LeSage for the amazing theme music. Find his music wherever you listen. Finishing up our run on Cards we are talking about grading. Many of you may have heard of the words 'mint' or '10-grade' around cards, but do you understand what that means? You may have also seen the reports on people making millions on trading cards, and wondered what it would take to get in on that action. We want to give you all the information we can when it comes to understanding card value and how they are graded; or rated. Welcome back, everybody! We do not have a theme for this episode, so you know there will be some madness. Brothers Justin and Branden may from time to time get lost in random conversations and this episode is no different. It starts with some discussion about the upcoming slate of episodes before Branden, unprovoked, attacks the respectable and hard-working band The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. We establish that he is in fact the co-host as well, so listen in and let us know what you think. You can email us at hdwghpod1@gmail.com, or you can message us on Instagram @howdidwepod. We are back with this years versions of our scary stories! If you are new here please take some time to look through our back catalog. Our show is usually a look at the history of the world around us. However, every year Branden and Justin write their own, original, scary stories to share. This year Justin shares more of a classic style scary story while Branden switches things up. Branden tries to mix his love for TTRPGs (Table Top Role Playing Games; think Dungeon and Dragons) and spooky stories. It is too different styles, but both equally as thrilling. Please let us know what you think! We want to hear any and all feedback. The best way is reach us on Instagram @howdidwepod; follow us and message us. You can also email us hdwghpod1@gmail.com. What do you know about the history of trading cards? We didn't know a lot, so we did some investigating. Now we want to share the information with you! If you are new here just know that we are brothers that can banter a bit to start the show, but it is all in brotherly fun. We just like starting the show with some light conversation before we get into the information. There is a lot that goes into the history of trading cards, so this will be in two parts. In this episode, we will cover Baseball Cards, as they are the first and are valued the highest. Then we will cover Konami as they are the biggest company and are home to Yugioh another major player in the card trading world. Coffee not only has a rich and beautiful scent that is enjoyed all over the world, but it also has a rich history that takes place all over the world. There is so much to this history that we have decided to split it into at least two episodes; if not three. This episode will focus more on the discovery of the Coffee plant, or at least the seed. Before the legend of Kaldi people who came into contact with the plant had no idea how to truly pull all the best parts from the berries. But was the legend of Kaldi true? We explore this, and many other legends that surround the world's introduction to coffee in the way we know it today. We discuss the history of Coffee all the way to colonization. Because colonization sparks another side to the history of coffee we will focus more on that in the next installation of this series. We are about to get spooky on this show, but first, we need a setup. The history of hospitals is deep and fascinating. From its origin in the church to the business-like function it has today we wanted to show you the hospital has evolved. Because this is only one episode we only discuss the history of hospitals themselves, so information on medicine, medical research, vaccines, and the wide variety of specialty practices will be saved for a series at the beginning of next year. This episode will be used as a base for that series and has a lot of information all on its own. This information is also the setup for our Halloween episode coming out the morning of all hallows eve! What do I mean by this? The next episode will cover the history of haunted hospitals. We have talked about doing Minisodes in the past, and here is the first one. We have had some busy weeks this summer and were not ready with the research to put out a full episode. To avoid giving you nothing Justin sat down with Scarlett and Milo (Justin and Branden's 6-year-olds) and tries to learn about their understanding of time. It was difficult for Justin to get time and attention from them, but hopefully, the conversation is fun to listen to. Branden and Justin are working hard to put together a 3 part series on time starting next week! Clock, watches, and calendars all shape the world we live in, but how did they come to be? Yes, we are talking Marvel (MCU) again! Yes, we were unable to complete our actual episode. No, we are not abandoning that episode; it will come out next week. Sometimes life gets busy and we fall a bit behind, but we still wanted to get you an episode. With San Diego Comic-Con just passing we have a lot of new MCU information to talk about, so we decided to pivot to that this week, and get back on track next week. We will be back to our full MCU timeline sometime in October or November, and if you want more Marvel talk we have 7 past episodes for you. The Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints is an interesting topic. Growing up in a community with heavy LDS influence has led us to hear many things about the church before we were old enough to understand what any of it meant. Now we are old enough to dive in and understand the history of the Church. We are also old enough to not hold that history against those that are a part of today's iteration of the LDS Church. Mormonism can be a tough topic to handle, but we give our best shot and we hope you enjoy it. Next week we will jump back into Mormonism and the LDS Church as we talk about our own thoughts on the history of the church and what it is today. We will also talk about more extreme offshoots like the FLDS (Fundamentalists) and more beyond that. If we got anything wrong, or there was something we missed, or if you feel we misrepresented parts of this topic please feel free to let us know. We in no way claim to be the end all be all, or to understand everything. We are more than willing to have an open discussion and would love to learn something new. We are on a constant hunt to improve ourselves, so send in any and all questions and comments. Thank you Oceas for sponsoring this episode. What the hell is gluten? Is it bad?! Is it going to kill you?!?!? Short answer....maybe. Gluten is not a catch-all for bad food or gut issues, but it can cause gut issues for certain people. The answer to our gluten questions is of course complicated. Truthfully, most people don't have celiac issues; however, being conscious of your body and how it reacts to certain foods is always a great idea. If you are curious about what foods your body can, or cannot, handle we would recommend keeping a food journal. We would also highly recommend talking to a professional dietitian, nutritionist, or your regular doctor. We are back, and talking rollercoasters. The last episode we covered Theme Parks, and we wanted to continue that fun by learning about the rides. Theme parks and amusement parks are awesome and the rides are a big reason why. Rollercoasters are well known, but do you know how they work? Well you will now. Do you know how many there are? hopefully you do now. We don't just talking about the popular parks (Disneyland, DisneyWorld, Universal Studios, Six Flags, Knott's Berry Farm and Europa Park) but we cover rides you've probably never heard of...unless you live in Sandusky, Ohio. There is so much more information that we could cover in just two episodes, but we did our best covering the most important aspects of the parks and the rides. Who doesn't love a good amusement, or theme, park?! They are awesome, but how did they get here? Who thought it would be a good idea to mixed a bunch of greasy food with a crowd of people and rides designed to make your stomach turn? We decided to take a deep dive for you and find the answers. So Step right up and enjoy this ride through the history of Theme Parks. In this episode we will learn about a number of parks like DisneyLand and Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Hollywood, Knott's Berry Farm, the many parks that resided in Coney Island, and many more. We did not realize the amount of parks that existed, or that parks had been around since the 1500s. Now of course the definition of 'Amusement Park' can be murky it its early history, but the fact remains that parks have been around much longer than we previously thought. We hope you enjoy this episode, and if there is more you would like to learn please let us know. Also, if there is something you would like to add feel free to reach out to us as well. Let's explore the Multiverse! This time without the MCU. Yes, the Marvel Multiverse was create based on the ideas of someone else. Although Marvel does a great job presenting the theory it is good to explore the theory itself. Of course we take some detours along the way, but the information is fascinating. The complexity of our universe, and the possible parallel universes, is to much to ever cover in one episode, but we hope to provide a foundation. Or at least a spark that leads you to study and learn more about the universe that surrounds you. This episode we are joined by the fabled Coop, and he helps use break through this complexity and present it to you. So as a treat to the listeners we are putting all of the openers that we created in 2021 into one episode. If you are new to the show then you must be wonder what an opener is. If you are a continual listener of 'How Did We Get Here?' you understand that Justin and Branden like to nerd out about the Marvel Cinematic Universe from time to time....or most episodes. This will be something similar to that in that it will be all MCU related content. It's really a continuation of the MCU that the brothers had from episode 15-18 where they covered the entirety of the 'Infinity Saga'; as well as the the history of the Marvel Studios in episode 16. In fact if you haven't done so already we highly recommend you go listen to that run of episode as it might be our favorite so far...especially episode 16. This episode opens up the MCU world after Thanos...and Mysterio. Except of course the first movie that we cover 'Black Widow' which of course shows Natasha Romanoff around the events of 'Civil War.' Even if it is a flashback it does introduce us to an important character moving forward. Then we move to two of the four amazing Disney+ Marvel shows we go this year: Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki. We understand that WandaVision debuted first, but we did this in an attempt to keep them in chronological order; even if that isn't the easiest way to do it. Both the shows we cover bring a lot of fun watching some of the characters that we already know, but also introduce us to new characters and concepts that will play big roles in the future of the MCU. We had hoped to cover more in this episode, but as you can see the episode is full of info already. We will be back in January to continue this run, and give you all the information you need to preparation for all the Marvel content in 2022 including the much anticipated 'Dr. Strange: Multiverse of Madness' Please go justareyes.com to find all things Justareyes Media; including the YouTube channel for this show.
