Discomfort is an important indicator that we're heading in the right direction, and I take the episode to explain this. I share personal stories and insights on how to shift our thinking and embrace discomfort as a part of the human experience. Today's episode is about confidence: the benefits of it, the consequences of lacking it, and how to cultivate it authentically. This topic is much more complex than one might first imagine due to the conflicting messaging we've received about it, women especially. We are encouraged to be confident but then programmed to outsource our power and intuition to others. We're reminded to be authentic but then told to ‘fake it til you make it'...So which is it? I address common misconceptions about confidence, emphasizing that it is not about arrogance but rather a healthy belief in our abilities and worth. I delve into the three cornerstones of confidence: our thoughts and beliefs, managing our emotions, and developing a healthy self-image. I briefly touch on how to develop the skill of failure tolerance and discuss the importance of creating a fail plan to anticipate and embrace potential failures as opportunities for growth. 45. How To Process Emotions Through The Body

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 23, 2023 33:30

Nobody teaches us how to actually feel an emotion in our body.  We resist it, we avoid it, we react to it by overeating, drinking alcohol, taking drugs, spending money or other means of escape.  We think if we're feeling an uncomfortable emotion like disappointment, guilt, or shame that something has gone wrong and we need to "fix" it.  But there's nothing to fix.  Uncomfortable emotions are part of being human.   Once you can accept this and learn to process your emotions in a healthy way, you'll become so much more calm.   An emotion is simply a sensation in your body, similar to hunger or thirst and they usually only last about 30 seconds. But since we think we need to "fix" the emotion, we keep going over the thoughts that caused it in the first place, causing it to occur over and over again.  In this week's episode of Is This All There Is? I don't want to say better because there's absolutely nothing wrong with you right now. But you 2.0 is the person you are 100% capable of becoming and really want to be.   Perhaps You 2.0 takes time for piano lessons because that's something you've always wanted to do.   She schedules time on the weekends to simply do nothing.   She sets boundaries around her time and energy and says no to things that aren't a yes. Picture this: you're yearning to make a change in your life, you know what you want and why you want it, but you don't act because you can't guarantee your success. This is a common narrative in many people's minds: that we must have all the steps figured out before taking a risk. Besides the fact that this is totally unrealistic, it's also a form of self sabotage in that we delay and even put off our progress entirely because of our fear of the unknown. In today's episode I coach you on how to dismantle this stifling belief one risk at a time. One of the main shifts is learning to narrow your focus to the next logical step and nothing else. The second one is learning to tap into your intuition for guidance on when to leap and when to pause. I then share my story of a risky career change to highlight all the above. As women we have been conditioned to doubt ourselves, second guess and constantly default  to others for guidance. Asking for opinions isn't inherently problematic, but an overreliance on them can result in accidentally outsourcing your power and weakening your intuitive muscle. I call this ‘living from the inside out'. In today's episode I discuss this gendered conditioning and detail how it might be holding you back from living the life of your dreams. I then outline how to begin trusting yourself to make the right decisions, how to shift your intuitive centre from your head to your heart space, and how to begin changing your life without adjusting a single external circumstance. In today's episode I reveal how to work smarter and not harder by leveraging massive action. We're all too familiar with the sociopolitical glass ceiling holding people back based on their gender, race, age, disability and more. Today, however, I want us to turn our gaze inwards to address the often unchecked INNER glass ceiling: limiting beliefs.  Limiting beliefs are our brains' way of keeping us safe from the unknown, and unfortunately we've repeated them so many times that we can't separate their fact from their fiction. In this episode I offer three steps to circumvent your brains well meaning but stifling habit of negative self-talk, that are identifying, unpacking and seeking help. However, asking the very mind that is holding you back to objectively observe and dismantle its own negative beliefs, is tricky at best. Most of us have tried and failed to achieve work-life balance at the expense of our health and interpersonal relationships. Work-life balance is an oppressive ideal that has women doing ‘the second shift': working full time, just to come home and do it all again in the domestic sphere. In this episode I encourage you to shift from ‘wanting it all' to identifying what genuinely matters to you, and then pursuing that. The bad news (or rather, the reality check) is that you definitely can't have it all. But the good news is that you can identify what makes life worth living and then pursue it systematically. I break this process down into 3 steps: the first is learning how to identify what's important to you, the second is understanding how to allocate your energy and the third is to begin positively shifting your mindset without needing your physical circumstances to change. The tools used to achieve these 3 steps are hacking confirmation bias (see episode 36), energy management (see episode 28), the Bucket Exercise and the Life Wheel Exercise. We've all experienced confirmation bias. It's the tendency to search for, interpret and favor information that confirms our prior beliefs or values. Think back to that one teacher you felt was hard on you, or a colleague who always took credit for your work, or the in-law who always undermined you at family gatherings. It's true that bad actors exist, but our minds also play a role in interpreting their behaviour in a way that fits our narrative. This phenomenon is true for our self-perception too: the idea that we're bad public speakers, shy in groups, not risk takers, disorganized - all of these beliefs have some foundation in truth but its our confirmation bias that keeps these beliefs very much alive. In this episode I break down how confirmation bias works, and look at its biological function as a mental reflex. I illustrate how belief precedes evidence, and how to take control of your thinking in order to produce the thoughts - and therefore evidence - that supports the more positive version of yourself and your life. Most of us have an unrealistic relationship with failure. We avoid it but desire what's on the other side of it: growth, opportunity, self-development. Today's episode is all about flipping this script. Prepare to be challenged! I begin by illustrating the difference between the comfort zone, the learning zone and the danger zone and how recognizing these will inform you when to take risk and when to avoid it. I then define failure as being the feeling of not meeting your own expectations, because its easy to think of failure as an objective experience that's shameful and embarrassing, but I encourage you to take control and adjust your perception. What if failure was a sign that you were one step closer to your goal? I emphasize this by outlining the consequences of avoiding failure and assert that it deprives us of vital experiences that prepare us for what our goals require from us. I end the episode by differentiating two types of failure: failure due to pushing past your comfort zone, and failure due to not trying at all. If you feel this episode only scratched the surface of your failure-avoidance, join the Mindset Gym and let's work on this together. Your mind is the most powerful tool on the planet.  Yet, if you're like most people, you probably spend very little time reflecting on how you think.  After all, who thinks about thinking?  But the way you think influences your emotions, which influence your actions (or lack of actions) which give you your results.  If you don't learn to manage your thinking, you let default thoughts run the show and limit your potential.   In this episode I unpack this truth and give you the tools to manage your thoughts. I begin by establishing that circumstances are inherently neutral, and that it's our thoughts about them that are charged and colour our experiences. We think the same deeply entrenched thoughts over and over again because we formed them when we were young and impressionable. The problem arises when these thought patterns are disempowering: so I spend time equipping you with knowledge of how the brain works (illustrating the primary motivations of pleasure, pain avoidance and energy conservation) and then give you the “Thought Download” tool to help you reprogram your thoughts.  Join the Mindset gym (linked below) to get one-on-one help reworking old thought patterns, and if you've found this episode valuable please leave a review to help like-minded people discover it.                         Consultation call:  http://www.amandaryanfear.com/consultation The Mindset Gym - https://www.amandaryanfear.com/the-mindset-gym Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/reset.to.joy Website - https://www.amandaryanfear.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/amandaryanfearcoaching/   Produced by Wowow Podcasts

    30. How To Build Stronger Relationships

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2023 29:48

Good relationships are the bedrock of a good life. So today I'm introducing a fundamental truth that will transform all of your relationships for the better: your thoughts – not the actions of others – are the foundations of all relationships. It is not what our friends, partners or kids say or do – but how we feel about what they say and do, that inform how harmonious or dissonant our relationships are. This is why it's pointless trying to control others, and more fruitful to address our thoughts about them. I unpack this concept in depth and walk you through two tools to help you separate fact from story, objective reality from feelings. The second tool is a practical one that will help you rationally assess your judgements and reprocess them, so have a pen and paper handy! Today is all about nervousness. Nervousness is an inescapable part of life, dreaded by most and avoided by many. But avoiding situations that make us nervous is self-sabotage: nerves indicate risk, and growth is at the other side of risk. So at the very least, I'm going to help you make peace with nerves, and at best – I'm hoping to encourage you to move towards them and embrace them. Strap in as I walk you through the 3 steps to follow in order to understand, manage and appreciate your nervousness. The first step is to create space for them. The second step is to ground yourself in the feeling and knowing of safety, and the final step is to invite more nerves into your body as a teachable moment; to show yourself that you are ultimately in control of how much angst is and isn't manufactured in your body. This all results in first-hand experience of how much control you have over your emotions, and with this knowledge, anything is possible! It's always an appropriate time to discuss boundaries! I begin by defining boundaries and conveying that they are a tool for connecting, rather than dividing. I explain that they aren't a means to control or manipulate, nor are they a set of rules to dole out to others. Rather, boundaries are a standard you hold yourself to, and their violation triggers a response you and you alone are required to uphold. I illustrate the benefits of healthy boundaries, and detail what a lack of them looks like. I walk you through the steps of healthy boundary setting and how to communicate them effectively, and discuss the best frame of mind to be in when expressing your boundaries. Ultimately, the responsibility of creating, maintaining and enforcing boundaries and their consequences - is yours alone. The active word is “your”: not the dreams your parents, partner or friends hold for you, but the dreams you have a deep knowing about and might be too afraid entertain. I begin the episode explaining how the transformational part of goals is the journey one takes to achieve them (more on this in Episode 12). I detail the importance of making heart-led choices and explain how to check in with your heart and use it as ‘true north'. 14. Handling Difficult People During the Holidays

As we approach the holiday season we also approach the “unavoidable” aunts and uncles, the “offensive” siblings and “insufferable” old friends. This episode will equip you with the tools to navigate these relationships, but probably not in the way you expect. For one, we aren't going to villainize people, as much as you might feel justified in doing so. In this episode I ask you to challenge yourself, to consider distressing dynamics and open up their hood to see what's underneath…which is You. I explain that what makes relationships challenging isn't so much the behaviours of others but our perceptions of them and the emotions that ensue. I discuss how the fundamental issue is that we don't see our thoughts as choices, and that the first step to improving relational dynamics is to accept this. Then, we need to notice our desire to change people and instead, soften this focus and turn it inwards with the intention of taking responsibility for how we think and feel. In doing this, we experience how accountability for our feelings moves us from a state of victimhood, to a position of power. I then guide you through an active exercise to help you gain practical understanding of this concept, and encourage you to stop expecting different behaviours from people who've never shown capacity for the same. I leave you with the thought experiment of deciding ahead of time how you want to handle upsetting interactions that are historically guaranteed to happen, as a way of protecting your peace and returning your power to yourself.   LINKS   Metamorphosis Coaching https://www.amandaryanfear.com/metamorphosis-landing-page   Stop the Constant Self Criticism - Manage Your Inner Critic 5 Day Challenge https://www.amandaryanfear.com/managing-your-inner-critic-challenge Join the Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/amandaryanfearcoaching/?ref=share_group_link Work With Me - https://www.amandaryanfear.com/site/contact Website - https://www.amandaryanfear.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/amandaryanfearcoaching/   Produced by Wowow

You've heard me say this before: we pursue things because we believe we will feel better for having them. Today we're deconstructing this truth, we're unpacking our relationship with negative emotions, and learning how to sit with them. Needless to say, this episode might be a bit uncomfortable if you're used to avoiding them! I explain that the root of all our pursuits is primal – we move towards pleasure and try to avoid pain. This avoidance can lead to unwanted behaviour like overspending and overeating, but the good news is that if we sit with difficult emotions long enough, they give us information about ourselves that we can leverage for better outcomes. I explain how to do this through the N.O.W acronym of Naming emotions, Opening up to them, and Witnessing our bodies inhabit them. I detail how to allow negative emotions to pass through us by observing them with compassion and non-judgement, and how to practice thought-swapping. If you're ready to understand, embrace and manage your emotions so they align with what you want in life, get in contact for a coaching session.   LINKS   Metamorphosis Coaching https://www.amandaryanfear.com/metamorphosis-landing-page   Stop the Constant Self Criticism - Manage Your Inner Critic 5 Day Challenge https://www.amandaryanfear.com/managing-your-inner-critic-challenge Join the Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/amandaryanfearcoaching/?ref=share_group_link Work With Me - https://www.amandaryanfear.com/site/contact Website - https://www.amandaryanfear.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/amandaryanfearcoaching/   Produced by Wowow

    12. Goal Setting Myths

Goals, goals, goals. We love them, we hate them and we keep making them despite how conflicted they can make us feel. For many of us, goals are a lose-lose. When we achieve them, we don't celebrate but think “if I could do it, anyone could”. If we don't achieve them, we berate ourselves and our self-confidence pays the price. In today's episode rewrite this script and challenge you to see goals themselves as a means to an end – one that has personal development at its centre rather than an external outcome. I set the tone by discussing a marathon goal I had and how halfway through it, I realised I was doing it for a very common, but dangerous reason: external validation. I use this anecdote to make broader observations about the importance of feeling valuable outside of productivity and achievement. I dispel the myth that if we don't' have goals we become stagnant, and offer tools to help you reframe goal setting as a ‘journey driven' activity rather than a static destination. I help you reimagine goals as the activity that helps you stretch and grow into the person you want to be. 11. The Secret to Changing Other People's Behavior

If your partner folds laundry haphazardly despite you showing them umpteen times how to do it the way you like, it's upsetting. The reasonable solution to avoid you being upset by this, is to insist they correct their behaviour, right? Wrong. Today's episode is going to ruffle some feathers, but it's for the better, I promise. Today I challenge the idea that what other people do causes us to feel upset, angry, or any other unpleasant emotion. It is not what people do but the meaning we ascribe to what they do - that is upsetting. I challenge the widely held belief that changing external circumstances results in a more peaceful inner state. It is both impractical and impossible to control people and external circumstances. What is practical, and very possible, is to observe and adjust how we interpret these things. After all, what is upsetting isn't badly folded laundry, it's the assumption that badly folded laundry means that our partner has no regard for our standards and, by extension, our feelings, and by extrapolation - us. I illustrate flawed thinking this through several relatable examples and then detail two practical tools to help combat this behaviour. The first assists with separating actions from the symbolism we give them, and the second is called “the manual”. Whether you find this information freeing or affronting, this episode will leave you with an understanding of where your reactions come from, and knowing how to reclaim some of that power. 10. How to Stop Procrastinating once and for all

Every day, I speak to women who want to stop procrastinating but don't know how.  When they get a new project at work at first they're excited, but then when it comes time to do it they just can't get started.  There are so many other things to do instead, like scroll through facebook, have a snack, fold socks… Then as the due date gets closer, panic sets in and they get to work.  Some even believe that they do their best work under pressure but that simply isn't true.  They're just motivated by the fear of not completing the project on time rather than the fear of actually doing it.       This throws them into the unnecessary emotional spin cycle of procrastination and stress.   They end up having to spend late nights at the computer working, time that should be spent with friends and family.  They give up sleep in order to get the work done.  They snap at their partners and kids because they're under so much pressure.   But that's all unnecessary.   Here's the bottom line: if you don't get this habit under control, the emotional roller coaster will only get worse.   But it doesn't have to be this way. While most high achieving women struggle with procrastination, a small handful are quietly beating it at its own game.  They're able to manage their thinking and get work done without the drama.   In this episode, you will learn: What causes procrastination  Why you think you work best under a deadline A tool to identify WHY you procrastinate How to beat procrastination  Plus, you'll get a special gift at the end!       LINKS   Metamorphosis Coaching https://www.amandaryanfear.com/metamorphosis-landing-page Join the Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/amandaryanfearcoaching/?ref=share_group_link Work With Me - https://www.amandaryanfear.com/site/contact Website - https://www.amandaryanfear.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/amandaryanfearcoaching/   Produced by Wowow

To Quit or Not to Quit, that is the question. In this episode I get personal and discuss my winding career path and all it taught me about when, why and how to quit my job. I explain that the act of leaving a job is the smallest, and probably easiest part. The real work is the inner work. I use a personal anecdote about my competitive horse-riding to explain the importance of witnessing our brains enter into anxious states, learning how to manage this process, and the importance of not catastrophizing this experience. I discuss how easy it is to gaslight ourselves into remaining in unfulfilling roles and how this process of ‘managing your mind' can help you get out of that cycle, and quit with calm, clarity and conviction. As always, this kind of self-development is intertwined with inner critic work. If you're inspired to do some, join my free Inner Critic challenge on October 10th-14th 2022, link below. Inner Critic work is central to living authentically, so in this episode we take a deep dive into what it is, what function it serves, and how to live a joyful life alongside it. I begin by defining what our Inner Critic is, and explain that it's ultimate goal is a benevolent one: it wants to keep us safe. Historically, and even today our inner critic plays its part. It helps us pre-empt disaster, apply scepticism and prioritize critical thinking. The shadow side of this executive function, however, is that there is no room for empathy for self, expansive thinking and creativity, because all of these things require risk taking and stepping into the unknown, which the Inner Critic does not allow. I illustrate more limitations our Inner Critic imposes and posit that in order to live the most expansive version of our lives, we need tools to subdue it. I then walk you through 3 tools you can implement immediately: giving your Inner Critic a personality, recognising your Inner Critic as merely a thought which can always be changed, and acknowledging, thanking and ‘relieving' your Inner Critic from the duty of mental bodyguard. In this episode I discuss the double-edged sword that is overthinking. As humans we are hardwired to perceive danger and prepare for it. But in these modern times of luxury and civility, overthinking becomes less of a safety mechanism and more a self-saboteur. I address how critiquing overthinking can feel ironic to overachieving women: their excessive planning, calculating, creating contingency plans and preparing for the unpreparable, is the very thing that earned them their achievements. But somewhere along this road, overthinking inevitably turns into insecurity, intrusive thoughts and self-doubt. I detail how to avoid this by keeping your mind in check through delineating facts from stories we tell ourselves. I illustrate the importance of quiet as a way of slowing down the mind which allows it to process your feelings unburdened by overthinking, and I leave you with a potent tool to help you override your brain's default mode, in order to ‘think on purpose'. So little time so much to do, the age-old dilemma. In today's episode I discuss a topic that all of us have wrestled with and most of us have lost: not for lack of trying but because it seems like a logically impossible problem to solve. If I have more to do than time available to do it in, something's gotta give, therefore peak productivity Is fundamentally unachievable. My response is Yes…And no. Get a pen and paper ready because this is an information and resource-rich episode with time management tools you can action immediately. I start by defining and differentiating ‘living by default' vs. ‘living by design'. I then explain the pitfalls of viewing goals as a thing we do to receive an emotional reward (like feeling proud of ourselves), and discuss how reframing goals as a conduit to become a better version of ourselves is a more fulfilling practice. I do this by uncoupling your inherent value from your sense of accomplishment and help you reframe time management as energy management. I end with giving you advice on how to delegate and even slash tasks from your to-do list altogether, and detail robust exercises to reprioritize your energy for maximum efficiency.   LINKS   Join the Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/amandaryanfearcoaching/?ref=share_group_link Work With Me - https://www.amandaryanfear.com/site/contact Website - https://www.amandaryanfear.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/amandaryanfearcoaching/   Produced by Wowow
