On this episode of the SoulScape Celebrations podcast, host Paul D. Lowe - International Celebrant - talks to Rabbi Daniel Cohen about his books, specifically ‘What Will They Say About You When You’re Gone: Creatinve a Life of Legacy’ as well as his career as a Rabbi. KEY TAKEAWAYS As you walk out of a funeral you have a moment where you say to yourself “I hope they speak about me the same way they spoke about that individual.” You leave thinking about doing what’s more important in life and how you want to be remembered. Generally, you’re motivated for about 15 minutes until you go back to life as usual. Life isn’t meant to be a highlight film. Every day god puts us on the Earth we have something unique to accomplish. It really hit home for me on a personal level when my mother passed away sudden from a brain aneurism when she was 44. I learned that life can change in an instant. When I got to 44 I began to think a lot more deeply about if I was doing the most that I can with the life that god has given me to try to make a difference in the world around me. You don’t have to believe in god, but I believe there’s something inside all of us, whether it’s a soul or some yearning to know that we matter, we not just here to eat, drink, be merry and die, that I need to love, be loved, be kind, unlock some beauty and sanctity in the world around me. All to often I think we fill our souls with junk food (social media, counterfeit pleasures) accomplishing a lot but not doing much. These things are still important, but what can you do today that’s worthy of future memory? It’s important to know the distinction between exiting vs living. When somebody says: “What’s my goal in life?” That goal shouldn’t be being healthy, that’s a means to accomplishing something, but to be healthy without using the gift of health is missing a unique opportunity. BEST MOMENTS ‘I’ve always lived with a sense that life matters, to be grateful for every day, not to wait for a crisis: There’s no atheists in a fox hole.’‘Life isn’t made up of days, it’s made up of moments'. ‘Anybody who enters my orbit should end up feeling better about themselves than when they entered that orbit'. ‘One of the most important things to be able to do in life is to make distinctions. To live a life of legacy means to be able to distinguish between really happiness vs pleasure'. It's one thing to define our personal values, but it's another story to actually live by values and align our actions with what we believe. The events that have transpired since 2020 have undoubtedly tested our principles, values, and beliefs. And yet it's not often I get to have a conversation with a friend who has the ability to get to the heart of navigating so many tough issues. My dear friend, Rabbi Daniel Cohen, joins us today to share his perspective on gratitude, life's challenges, and more. He has served as the Senior Rabbi at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel in South Orange, New Jersey since 1999. In this episode, the theme of our conversation is about what we can do to find strength during a crisis. Together, we discussed: Why community becomes our safety net when we navigate difficult times How stressful moments are the biggest test of keeping in line with our values Learning to see the big picture so we can win our perspective back The art of finding joy in the smallest things (and letting go of our assumptions) Seeking acceptance in a world that's become fundamentally different Links Gear Diary Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel

"When I think about the Elijah moment, it means we may not be able to change the world, but each and every one of us can change the world of one person. " {Rabbi Daniel Cohen) "The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why." (Mark Twain) Reflecting on my life, for most of the earlier years, like most of us I was just too busy living to think about why. The theme of today's conversation, centers on the soul-searching questions, what is your life purpose, your why ? And what will be your legacy? To help me and you answer this question, I am honored to have as my guest, Rabbi Daniel Cohen. He is the author of What Will They Say About You When You Are Gone? Creating a Life of Legacy. He also co-hosts the nationally syndicated Radio Show, The Rabbi and the Reverend , with Reverend Greg Doll. Rabbi Cohen has served in the rabbinate for over thirty years and currently serves as senior Rabbi in Stamford, CT, at the largest modern orthodox synagogue in New England. Before discussing his book, which suggests 7 Principles to realize one's life purpose at any age and provides a toolbox of ideas, we talk about the opening exercise. Designed to help one reflect on how you would want to be remembered so that you can reverse engineer your life choices and decisions going forward. What will they say about you when you are gone? Takeaways: Connect- think of someone in your life that you have meant to call, who needs a little inspiration or a kind word, but time got away and you have not connected. Don't wait another minute – text or call. There is a concept of mysticism that if you have a fluttering in your soul to do something good, seize the moment, because that is your soul's way of telling you to bring a little more light into the world. Welcome to Episode 64 of Live Authentically. On today’s episode, Pam is discussing living lives of legacy with Rabbi Daniel Cohen.Cohen is a mentor, guide and motivator who spins timeless wisdom into narratives that speak to all of us. The simple stories and strategies he teaches highlight the best of who we are and desire to be. Drawing on his years of experience as a Rabbi, Cohen shares stories and life-affirming moments from throughout his years as a cleric. What is truly unique about Rabbi Cohen though is his gift for humor and humanity, while discussing difficult subject matter. No one can listen to him speak for long without immediately empathizing and connecting with what he has to say. Here’s a brief overview of his conversation with Pam.The Importance of Spiritual & Physical AlignmentThe discussion for today begins with Rabbi Cohen discussing his own daily efforts to live authentically. Meditation, prayer, intentionality and acts of kindness (mitzvahs) all feature prominently in his daily life. More importantly, Cohen puts special emphasis on the importance of seeking God’s will for his life as the prime directive for living authentically. Making a difference and bringing more light to the universe is how he judges the success of every day.At this point, Pam directs their talk to the daily practices that Rabbi Cohen put into practice. He discusses his relationship with a mentor and Holocaust survivor, and how he was inspired by her example and daily life. Many of her daily habits became his habits: praying three times per day, meditating on the beauty of the world around him, regular exercise and sufficient sleep. The conversation then turns to the importance of finding and maintaining balance. Cohen states God doesn’t demand perfection, so we should not be fearful that we don’t measure up. Conversely, he also says it does not excuse us from striving to do our best. We are obligated every day to find those unrevealed lights of wisdom in the world and bring them forth to the world. Each day, we must strive to make today better than yesterday. To Cohen, righteousness is not perfection, but instead, an unshakable commitment to grow, evolve and change to be the best version of ourselves. He and Pam wrap up the conversation with a discussion of the meaning of existence, and our purpose on this planet while we are here. This section of the podcast is definitely not one you want to miss.We hope you gained as much from Rabbi Cohen’s wisdom in this episode as we did. Don’t forget to like comment and share! Additionally, if you’d like to learn more about Rabbi Cohen or booking speaking engagements, you can visit his website here. Thanks for listening, and we look forward to seeing you next time on the Live Authentically Podcast.

Rabbi Daniel Cohen, the author of “What will they say about you when you're gone?”, joins Dr. Bunny for a wonderful discussion about life and making a difference in the world. With the holidays upon us, there is a natural pause built into our culture to celebrate the harvest and to give thanks. Unfortunately, these days too many have let politics and other difficult problems cause rifts in relationships. How can we heal this? Is there a way to come together? It is the holidays, after all. Here are some tips from Rabbi Daniel Cohen: ~ Seize the Present. We spend too much time living with regrets or worrying about the future. We miss the opportunities in the present. Text or Call someone with whom we have lost touch or take for granted and let them know how much they mean to you. ~ Cultivate Gratitude – It is the secret to friendships and healing. Keep a gratitude journal. We will wake up with humility and healing to be more patient, understanding and kind. ~ See the Divine and Good in Everyone – Be as forgiving to others as we are of ourselves. We are quick to overlook our own flaws. Do the same with those around you. Do not dig for the dirt but mine for the gold. ~ Change One Person: Change the World. One spark, one kind deed, one light can transform a world of despair and darkness intro one of hope and healing. We only live once. Create an Eiljah Moment. In the words of William Penn – “I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.” Rabbi Daniel Cohen has been speaking and doing television interviews and other media all around the country. He is the author of What Will They Say About You When You're Gone: Creating a Life of Legacy. If you only had 24 hours to live, what would you do and why? What are the five words you would want written on your headstone? All of us want to make the most of our time on the planet - to live a life that matters. These questions trigger an awareness of the fragility of life. In an instant life can change. We never know what each day will bring. In those moments when we are confronted by our mortality, we possess an opportunity. We focus on what is truly important in our lives. We all experience these moments when our world shaken or perhaps at joyous occasions – a birth or wedding, when we pause to take stock of our lives. The question for us is how do we lead our lives with this sense of purpose every day? Rabbi Daniel Cohen provides the roadmap. In his book, What Will They Say About You When You Are Gone? Creating a Life of Legacy, Rabbi Daniel Cohen challenges us to find meaning in every day and live our best lives now. His book is not about death but about harnessing our potential to live life with deeper joy, renewable energy and impact. Creating a legacy is not a once in a lifetime event but is dependent upon the light we share every day. As he shares in his interview with Mark, it is about “Discovering Your Elijah Moment” This principle is one seven guidelines for leading the life now for how you want to be remembered. Discovering your Elijah moment means seizing oppotunit8es for impact and transforming a fleeting moment into an eternal one. It could be in a coffee shop paying it forward, calling a person to offer support or in the case of a man in hospital in Salt Lake City, offering a blessing to all who entered his room. In the words of Mark Twain, “the two most important days of your life, are the day you are born and the day you understand why.” Rabbi Cohen offers a guide for life to help us understand our why and realize the latent potential inside and in every day. Listen to his interview with Mark and learn more about the principles of leading a life of legacy. It is less about how you will be remembered and more about how you can lead your best life now. You will learn how to enrich your relationships and realize your innermost aspirations and dreams. For more information, visit www.rabbidanielcohen.com
