Anne's Book Club: Swatch Critters & Profile Drafting for Handweavers by Deb Essen (Schiffer Craft)

The Long Thread Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 30, 2025 20:14

Anne's Book Club is a new series of interviews with the authors of new fiber art books that I think Long Thread Podcast listeners will love. This episode features new books by Deb Essen, a frequent contributor to Handwoven and Little Looms. Deb Essen may weave plenty of blocks and squares, but you definitely can't put her in a box. Not many weavers would release a book about turning pin-loom squares into adorable stuffed animals just a few months before a book about a drafting method for multishaft weaving, but Deb's curiosity about all things weaving has led her down delightful rabbit holes. (For her book Swatch Critters from the Pin Loom, she wove the whole rabbit!) In our conversation about weaving, writing, and inspiration, Deb talked about why she's excited about both new projects. “They're for people who just like to weave,” she says, “and they're curious about all different kinds of weaving things.” Listen in for a chat and excerpt from the books. From Deb's introduction: Pin looms appeared on the weaving scene in the 1930s as small wooden frames with nails around the perimeter that hold yarn to allow the weaving of small squares. The best-known brand was the “Weaveit” pin loom. Now I have to admit, previous experience with pin looms made out of wood did not make me a fan of pin loom weaving. The wooden looms can be hard to hold comfortably, the weaving needle would catch on the frame edges, and the nails are not always perfectly spaced. But Schacht Spindle Company's Zoom Loom resolved all the issues I had with pin looms. The frame is flat plastic that is easy to hold, the pins are placed precisely and securely anchored, the inside edges of the frame are beveled so the weaving needle does not catch a sharp edge when exiting, and as a bonus, the loom frame has directional notations for winding yarn onto the pin loom. I am in love with these little looms! From Deb's introduction: Welcome to profile drafting—a powerful weaving tool that lets us create one fabric design and translate it into many weave structures! Whether you are a beginning weaver or have been weaving for years, my intent is to open this wonderfully versatile design toolbox for you and explain how to use the tools inside. I consider profile drafts as weaving “shorthand,” where I can quickly see the overall fabric design and then plug in the treading, treadling, and tie-up for the block weave structure I want to use. I've taught prolife drafting for many years, and there are three big questions everyone has that I will answer in this book: Question 1: Why use a profile draft? Question 2: How do profile drafts work? Question 3: How do the squares on a profile draft translate into the threading, the treadling, and especially the tie-ups for different weave structures? This book is a sampler platter of block weave structures using profile drafts. I could literally write an entire book on each weave structure, but my intention is to answer those big questions above for each weave structure and whet your appetite for using profile drafting when designing fabrics. In the "Resources" section at the end of the book, I have listed other books that are dedicated to deeper dives into the different weave structures. All the projects can be woven on 4 or 8 shafts. If you have more shafts available on your loom, you can weave more blocks of pattern in your fabric. Deb Essen is a well-known weaving expert and a frequent contributor to Handwoven and other magazines. The owner of DJE Handwovens, Deb teaches at conferences and guilds, nationally and internationally. She lives in Victor, Montana. In this Almost Certainly Not companion series, we examine each episode's origins, production process, behind-the-scenes, personal thoughts, and most likely go off on some tangents in spite of our best efforts. In this episode, we examine Double Attack: The Maneuvers of Manipulation. Every move is calculated, every sacrifice intentional. Manipulation, like chess, is a game of control—of positioning others without them realizing they're being played. The most skilled manipulators don't force; they guide, nudging their pawns forward until checkmate feels like their opponent's own doing. How does this happen? Why is it so consistent in its method and execution, and where is the line between sympathy for those who suffer from these traits and accountability for the pain they inflict on others?  NOTE: The views expressed in "Possibly Not" are part of an extemporaneous discussion, and while we do our best to be as accurate as possible, we are human and will get things wrong.

He has tremendous knowledge of Dual-Brain Psychology techniques.  All problems come out of early traumas and very often it's trauma that has not been recognized. As the founder of Dr. Schiffer's Dual-Brain  PsychologyTM, he has discovered a technique to treat the troubled mind using something as unlikely as a piece of junk mail. It's detailed in his  forthcoming book, Goodbye Anxiety, Depression, Addiction & PTSD: The Life-Changing Science of Dual-Brain Psychology.  His book takes an in-depth look at the science behind Dual-Brain Psychology while offering practical tips and tools to try it for yourself. His  book also shares the many triumphs of patients who have had their lives forever changed by his work.  Dr. Fredric Schiffer has the path to treating past trauma and eliminating drug, alcohol and gambling cravings which most people suffer from for life. And other info: Through his groundbreaking work as founder of the Dual-Brain Psychology Institute, he has discovered that the brain is made up of two minds which are competing for dominance. When the immature and troubled half of the brain is treated, Dual-Brain Psychology techniques can successfully curb anxiety, depression, PTSD, and addiction, and improve psychological wellbeing.  Dr. Schiffer intends to provide listeners with knowledge about how Dual-Brain Psychology offers a deep understanding of one's psychological issues and can become the blueprint to help people work through past traumas that are causing anxiety, depression, PTSD and addiction. How can simply covering your eyes reduce anxiety and depression?  What got you interested in split brain studies?  How do you think your work will revolutionise the way doctors treat trauma?  How do I know which side of my brain is most dominant?  What makes dual-brain psychotherapy more effective than other forms of psychotherapy? My guest on this episode is Fredric Schiffer, MD, psychiatrist, assistant professor at Harvard, and author. Many psychiatric issues and addictions stem from past traumas. Dr. Schiffer has researched and developed a theory of psychology called “dual-brain psychology.” This theory suggests that the brain is made up of two minds, which compete for dominance. Trauma is stored in one of the two brain hemispheres, and that each of those hemispheres can support an entire mind. When Dr. Schiffer treats the troubled side of the brain is treated with a technique he developed, he states that it can successfully curb anxiety, depression, PTSD, and addiction. In this interview, Dr. Schiffer guides me through one of these techniques! You can also try this at home to discover which side of your brain stores trauma. We also discuss how he uses this and other techniques to help people who are addicted to fentanyl and other substances. He is the author of the book “Good-bye Anxiety, Depression, Addiction & PTSD: The Life-Changing Science of Dual-Brain Psychology.” Visit his website at dualbrainpsychology.com.

Man Faces Charges in “Duckgate” Scandal Linked to Karen Read Case A Massachusetts man is facing criminal charges after allegedly distributing rubber ducks and fake $100 bills in support of Karen Read, a woman accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe. Richard Schiffer Jr., 65, has been charged with witness intimidation, criminal harassment, and littering, according to Stoughton District Court. The incidents, some locals are calling "Duckgate," have sparked controversy in the Boston suburb of Canton, where the case has divided the community. Schiffer is accused of leaving rubber ducks and counterfeit bills near homes and businesses connected to witnesses in Read's case, which has attracted a fervent group of supporters. Read, 44, of Mansfield, is accused of striking O'Keefe with her SUV outside a Canton home on January 29, 2022, and leaving him to die in a snowstorm after a night of drinking. O'Keefe's body was found the next morning outside the home of a fellow Boston police officer. Read has pleaded not guilty, and her defense team argues that she was framed as part of a conspiracy to protect individuals who were present at the home that night. They claim O'Keefe was fatally beaten, and his body was left outside to divert suspicion onto Read. Her first trial ended in a mistrial in July 2023 after the jury was deadlocked. Judge Beverly Cannone, who oversaw that trial, will return to the bench for Read's second trial, scheduled for early next year. Cannone rejected the defense's request to drop certain charges, and that decision is now being appealed to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. In addition to overseeing the retrial, Cannone will also rule on recent requests by Special Assistant District Attorney Hank Brennan, who was appointed to lead the case last month. Brennan has asked for court authorization to reassemble and retest electronics from Read's SUV, seeking more evidence before the retrial. He has also requested cellphone records for William Read, Karen Read's father, and records related to a 2023 local media interview the Read family gave about the case. Schiffer, who admits to distributing rubber ducks and fake $100 bills, claims his actions are protected under the First Amendment. "Through the First Amendment and my right to free speech, I expressed my opinion and belief that Karen Read is innocent," Schiffer wrote in an online fundraiser seeking help with his legal fees. Schiffer's attorney has not yet been listed in court records, and CNN has reached out to him for comment. The rubber ducks reportedly reference a comment made by Read's defense attorney, Alan Jackson, during a pre-trial hearing, when he said, "If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's a duck." Police claim Schiffer used these ducks to harass witnesses by implying they could not "duck the truth" about O'Keefe's death. Surveillance footage, traffic cameras, and witness testimony were used to link Schiffer to the incidents. The first incident occurred in March 2023, when fake $100 bills were found near D&E Pizza & Subs in Canton, a restaurant owned by a relative of the homeowner where O'Keefe's body was discovered. Over the next several months, more fake bills and rubber ducks appeared near O'Keefe's home, two bars he visited before his death, and outside homes of other witnesses. Some of the ducks carried stickers implicating a family member of the property owner where O'Keefe was found, and the fake bills bore the message “Justice for BPO John O'Keefe.” In May, investigators executed a search warrant on Schiffer's Toyota Tundra and found rubber ducks and stickers inside the vehicle. Rubber ducks were also discovered outside the home of Massachusetts State Police Trooper Michael Proctor, the lead investigator in the case. Proctor has been accused of mishandling the investigation, and after Read's first trial, he was suspended from the force without pay following revelations of inappropriate comments he made about Read in a private group chat with colleagues. Schiffer, however, maintains that his actions were peaceful and lawful expressions of his belief that Read is innocent. "Charging innocent citizens with manufactured crimes is weaponizing our justice system to silence law-abiding citizens," Schiffer wrote in a second online fundraiser. As Read's retrial approaches, the case continues to gain national attention, and the community remains divided. Schiffer's criminal charges could carry serious consequences, with witness intimidation alone carrying a potential 10-year prison sentence. Despite this, Schiffer shows no signs of backing down, asserting that he will continue to advocate for Read's innocence as she prepares to stand trial again in January.
