Once Jay Kholos sold the show to various radio stations, it was generally up to those stations to sell the show to sponsors. In New York, The Zero Hour was running on WRVR 106.7-FM. WRVR-FM was initially a public radio station owned and operated by The Riverside Church in New York. It began broadcasting on January 1st, 1961. The Riverside Church, located in Morningside Heights, is an interdenominational, interracial, and international church, and has long been a center of activism and social justice. WRVR was the first station to win a Peabody for its entire programming, in part for its documentary coverage of the civil rights movement in Birmingham in 1963. In addition to religious and philosophical discussions with Riverside clergy and theologians, WRVR programming included addresses by political and cultural leaders, like Indira Gandhi, Aldous Huxley, John F. Kennedy, and Margaret Mead. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his pivotal “Beyond Vietnam” speech at the Riverside Church over WRVR-FM on April 4th, 1967. The station also featured the heralded weekly program Just Jazz with Ed Beach. In September 1971, WRVR went commercial and shifted to a news format, with the exception of Just Jazz, which continued until 1973. By then, WRVR was experimenting with radio drama in both golden age and new time productions. On September 4th, 1973, part two of The Zero Hour's “Wife of the Red-Haired Man” took to the air. Radio legend Mary Jane Croft, who was also the wife of Elliott Lewis, was featured in this episode. Years later, she spoke to SPERDVAC about her radio career and late husband. In September of 1973, WRVR was advertising a World Hockey Association exhibition matchup which featured legends Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull. The New York Raiders and later The Golden Blades were intended to be the upstart WHA's flagship franchise. They were, however, unable to compete with the NHL's New York Rangers and the expansion New York Islanders. After just two seasons, The Golden Blades moved to San Diego. The WHA folded after eight years in 1979 with four teams: The Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, and Winnipeg Jets, joining the NHL.

Hour 1 The Monday Night Football game with the Broncos and Bills had a wild finish. The Bills aren't as good as we expected and that makes the Jets season more frustrating. Robert Saleh is still defending Zach Wilson. Boomer says Garrett Wilson needs to focus on doing his own job. The Broncos and Bills had a battle of mistakes last night. The Bills are a mess right now. Can the Jets take advantage of that on Sunday? Gio says Nathaniel Hackett looks bad right now since the Jets are still trying to run the Aaron Rodgers offense. Gio says if Robert Saleh is right about Zach Wilson playing well then that means the rest of the offense sucks. Jerry has the audio of the play that looked like a winner for the Bills before a flag gave the Broncos a do-over. Robert Saleh said Zach Wilson is better than last year and playing well. The Jets offense can't adjust. Brian Daboll is in an impossible situation. Gio says who cares about pride with the Giants, this year is now all about getting a top draft pick and chance to select the next franchise QB. The coaching staff and players will try but is it best for the franchise to lose? Gio loves “Brass Bonanza”, the old Hartford Whalers song. In the final segment of the hour, we listen to ‘Go! Cubs! Go!” and discuss other great sports songs. Hour 2 The Bills haven't been the same team since they went to London. The Jets still have a chance to bounce back and we can all look like fools if the light comes on for Zach Wilson. Gio is hoping for it but doesn't think there's a chance it happens. Every move the Jets made was for Aaron Rodgers but all of his cronies stink without him. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Bills losing to the Broncos thanks to turnovers and penalties. The primetime slate for this weekend is much better than some awful ones we've had recently. Robert Saleh doesn't believe a QB change will help the Jets offense. The Knicks lost to the Celtics and RJ Barrett did not play. Jim Harbaugh said some crazy things about his suspension and his cold. Henrik Lundqvist was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. In the final segment of the hour, Gio begs Carlos Mendoza to not have an embarrassing viral moment in his introductory press conference. Brian Cashman said Giancarlo Stanton is going to get hurt this season. Gio found his honesty refreshing. Maybe Brian Cashman will join our Cashman injury pool. Hour 3 The Raiders are about to face a real offense after seeing the Giants and Jets the last two weeks. There are a lot of double digit spreads this week. Gio tries to make sense of Jets beat writer Rich Cimini's tweet about Chris Streveler. Should Joe Douglas be on the hot seat for not trading for Josh Dobbs? Boomer says Zach made plenty of good throws against the Raiders. The team just can't finish off drives. Gio says the Rodgers injury somehow keeps getting worse because with a healthy Rodgers the Jets are one of the AFC's best teams. Should the Knicks pursue a trade for Zion Williamson if he wants out? Jerry returns for another update but first, Gio has a picture of Shaun Morash sleeping in the office yesterday with the Craig Carton dummy. Kevin Harlan delivered as always at the end of last night's Broncos Bills game. Is Robert Saleh still answering Joe B's texts? The Knicks, without RJ Barrett, had a bad 4th quarter in a loss to the Celtics. Chris Russo has a problem with Michigan trying to play the victim. Boomer says Jim Harbaugh is not facing any kind of adversity while Gio finds Harbaugh as a villain to be entertaining. In the final segment of the hour, the guys look ahead to the week 11 slate and wonder how many unders they should bet. There is light at the end of the tunnel but the next few months are going to be ugly for Giants fans. Hour 4 The Mets are introducing Carlos Mendoza as their new manager today. Tom Izzo will be working adjusted hours for the next few weeks and is the new “oatmeal bitch” along with being the de facto assistant program director. Why do MLB managers still have jerseys? A caller had flashbacks thanks to NBC mentioning the Heidi Game on Sunday night. Who is in charge right now at WFAN? Jerry is here for his final update of the day and starts with the Broncos wild win over the Bills. Boomer says the 12 men on the field penalty could either be the fault of the player or the special teams coach. Joe Benigno said the NFL wanted the Raiders to win the game. The Moment of The Day features Eddie giving us a peak into how Al has been prepping for his colonoscopy today. In the final segment of the day, Boomer predicts that Taylor Swift will be in Kansas City for Chiefs vs Eagles next Monday night, then we slightly de-rail into discussing communist China.

Some people are lucky enough to have one interesting career. Pat Hughes had two: playing in the NHL for nine years, then serving 20 years in the Ann Arbor Police Department, retiring as a Detective Sergeant. He played for legendary coaches Scotty Bowman in Montreal and Glen Sather in Edmonton, and alongside all-time greats Guy Lafleur, Wayne Gretzky, and Mark Messier, winning three Stanley Cups, then earned a reputation as one of Ann Arbor's most respected law enforcement officers. He talks here about the lessons he learned along the way.In this episode Pat tells us what he learned becoming one of the first college hockey players to get to the NHL – “There is no substitute for honest effort,” then playing for two hockey dynasties, the Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers. While Montreal was an established, old-school organization, and Edmonton was run by young players whose coach gave them more freedom, the two clubs had a lot in common, as all winning teams do.“Great teams are inclusive,” Hughes says. “They bring you in right away, and make you feel like you belong.” He explains how both teams did that, and made every player feel important and valuable to the team's mission. He also talks about both Hall of Fame coaches, Montreal's Scotty Bowman, and his remarkable ability to influence his players, and Edmonton's Glen Sather, who took a different approach in some ways, with a younger, looser bunch, but kept his finger on the pulse of his players, and still instilled the principles needed to win four Stanley Cups in five years.Hughes also talks about what he learned playing alongside such all-time greats as Yvan Cournoyer, Guy Lafleur, and Ken Dryden in Montreal, and Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Paul Coffey in Edmonton, among others. A humble man, Hughes had to be prompted to discuss one of his highlights: five goals in one game against Calgary – the second highest total any NHL player has achieved, including Gretzky. The conversation then turns to Pat's lifelong interest in law enforcement, and how he realized his second dream by becoming a Detective Sergeant in the Ann Arbor Police Department, and the lessons he learned in his 20-year career, including how to settle down a college party run amuck without sparking a riot, and how to transfer his ability to stay calm under pressure from his hockey career to the AAPD.We close with Pat describing his favorite teacher from high school, and his great advice about being either really smart or very organized. Pat jokes that he picked the latter!About our Host:For info about the book or this podcast please visit our website:http://www.letthemleadbybacon.comhttp://www.johnubacon.comYou can connect with John via these platforms:https://www.facebook.com/johnubaconhttps://twitter.com/Johnubacon

Jeff Jacobs is a writer who bleeds on the keyboard, and his passion for the craft has never wavered during 46 years in the business. You'll hear it as Jeff recalls his first big career moment when he unexpectedly became part of the story at a minor league hockey fight. He puts us there in January1980 when the Philadelphia Flyers' record 35-game undefeated streak ended, and he provides other hockey stories that depict the sport's unique culture. Jeff brings the Hartford Whalers back to life with vivid anecdotes and a few bars of the defunct NHL team's fight song. And he shares details and tales of dustups from many years of covering Geno Auriemma and Jim Calhoun, two Hall of Fame basketball coaches at the University of Connecticut. Hear about heart attacks, hate mail, and a memorable phone call from a particularly cranky senior citizen.   Jacobs has been named Connecticut Sportswriter of the Year 11 times (including 2022) by the National Sports Media Association. He has been honored four times by the Associated Press Sports Editors as one of the top-10 columnists in the country. Jeff spent nearly 34 years at the Hartford Courant before becoming sports columnist for the Hearst Connecticut Media Group in January 2018. He was the Hartford Courant's sports columnist for 22 years after covering the Whalers and NHL as the paper's beat reporter. Jeff has covered all four of the UConn men's basketball national championships and 10 of the 11 NCAA titles won by Auriemma's women's program. He's also covered multiple Olympics, World Series, Super Bowls, and Stanley Cup Finals.   Jacobs was born in Kirkwood, Mo., grew up in Newport, R.I., and is a 1977 graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He began his career as a hockey writer at The Times Herald in Port Huron, Michigan, and then covered the Flyers for The Courier Post (New Jersey) before joining the Hartford Courant in 1984.   Jeff likes to say that his hobby is surviving heart attacks. He had a double bypass surgery after his second one in 2019. His first heart attack, in 2005, required a quadruple bypass. Here's to wishing Jeff great health and many more years of writing.   Follow Jeff on Twitter: @jeffjacobs123 Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Dregs says it's a matter of time before they do, and there is plenty to debate on which legends of the game would have to honour of having a trophy named after them. Would it be too soon to name the Selke after Patrice Bergeron? Is there one trophy that should remain untouchable for now? The Hartford Whalers were a beloved hockey team from the moment of their founding in 1972 as the World Hockey Association's New England Whalers. Playing in the National Hockey League's smallest market and arena after the 1979 WHA merger/absorption/expansion, the Whalers struggled in a division that included both the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens - but the club's fans were among the NHL's most loyal. In 1995, new owners demanded a new arena - and when plans fell through, moved the team to Ralegh, North Carolina - where they became today's Carolina Hurricanes. Astonishingly, the Whalers remain as popular as ever in their former home town and previous incarnation. Even though more than two decades have passed since Connecticut's only professional sports team relocated, nobody has truly forgotten the team, its history, or its uniquely memorable (and still highly profitable) logo. And while the NHL continues to thrive without them, the Whalers' impact stretches far beyond the ice and into a still very-much-alive cultural phenomenon. Boston Globe sportswriter Christopher Price ("Bleeding Green: A History of the Hartford Whalers") grew up in Connecticut as a diehard Whalers fan, experiencing firsthand the team's bond with the community. Drawing from all aspects of the team's past, he shares an uncensored history of the region's still-favorite professional sports franchise.
