There's nothing like a good comedy show to make you laugh and think about the irony of our lives.Long before Dave Chappelle, Ali Wong, or  Richard Pryor, there was one comedian that changed the landscape for all comedians. He communicated about his life through comedy like no one had ever done. Lenny Bruce was a controversial character in the 50's and 60's who challenged the first amendment with his act by talking about politics, religion, sex, drugs, and race. He was arrested several times for the things he said and spent more time in jail than he did on stage. He died in 1966 of a drug overdose.Today's guest has taken on Lenny Bruce's story by writing and starring in a one-man show that portrays the life and character of this controversial communicator.Ronnie Marmo is an actor, director, and producer. You may have seen him on Criminal Minds or General Hospital, but a few years back he decided to write and star in the one-man show, I'm Not a Comedian, I'm Lenny Bruce, directed by Joe Montanga.Ronnie has performed this show over 400 times.  He  joins me  in person to talk about his journey in communicating onstage through one of the most iconic performers of all time and share how that comedian has influenced us all.For more information and ticket sales click here.

At 24 years old you could hear him say that he always knew in his heart that he would be an actor, but hadn't found the time to do it yet. He & his mother had an actor friend who they wanted to support, so they went to see him in every community theatre play in NJ. Ronnie would leave these shows lit up with excitement and his mother tried to convince him to audition. His mother died of cancer in 1995, and Ronnie finally called that actor friend to ask if he could audition for the next play. He was cast in the unlikely role of evil farmer in Hide and Seek at the Edison Valley Playhouse. He hasn't looked back since. His acting career began with leading roles in Italian American Reconciliation & Lusting After Pipino's Wife. He was recognized for both plays by the NJ ACT with awards for outstanding lead male actor. He won the Cable ACE award in 1997 as the host & producer of Documentary of Year. Everyone who knows anything about comedy knows about Lenny Bruce. He's the godfather of socially relevant, edgy, interesting comedy that pushes boundaries. Ronnie Marmo somehow manages to not only deliver Lenny's bits in a 90 minute show, but also channels the man so convincingly it really feels like you're watching the guy live. Lenny passed away more than 50 years ago, but Ronnie has brought him back to life in his play I'm Not A Comedian, I'm Lenny Bruce. I sat down with Ronnie after a performance at The Goodman Theater in Chicago and talked with him about the play, the craft of acting, and how he's able to embody the character so well. The guy is not just a talent, but a real artist who is committed deep down to the craft, and to being present in life. Honestly, it was pretty inspiring. Actor and director Ronnie Marmo may be a soap star but the truth is he's so very much more. Sure, he played Ronnie Domestico for three years on General Hospital (yeah, the character was written for him) but his main passion is directing theater. The Artistic Director and Cofounder of Theatre68 (which has an outpost in New York as well as LA), Marmo has produced over 30 plays, including the critically acclaimed Bill W. and Dr. Bob (in which he's also played Bill). He's also been in numerous feature films and guest starred on Jag and The Young and the Restless, among others. But more significantly, he's been sober over two decades after years of crack addiction and drug dealing led to him coming to at a San Diego 12-step picnic (you gotta listen to get the whole story). In this episode, he and AfterParty's Anna David talk about hating the taste of beer, why the whole world could benefit from 12-step and always imagining dying young, among many other topics.
