“You got your Oscar, which was an unfortunate night for everyone…” - Steve on Will Smith On this week's episode, we're kicking off a two-episode tribute to the legendary Gene Hackman with a convo about the better-than-you-remember surveillance thriller, Enemy of the State! First off, this ain't no sequel to The Conversation, let's get that straight! Why was the great Jason Robards uncredited? Same question for Philip Baker Hall! Why couldn't a rocket hit Jamie Kennedy and Seth Green's surveillance van? And how incredible is that effect shot with Jason Lee and the firetruck? PLUS: Brill interrogates the Peanuts Gang! Deadpool & Wolverine is a win on so many levels. Fan service is absolutely unmatched, Hugh Jackman returns to the MCU for the foreseeable future, and the film absolutely wonderful moments. We'll highlight the top 5 New York landmarks featured in movies, then delve into Spike Lee's powerful drama 25th Hour (2002), followed by a nostalgic look at the animated series Gargoyles.Top 5 New York Landmarks in Movies:Statue of Liberty - Featured in countless films, the Statue of Liberty is perhaps most memorably portrayed in Planet of the Apes (1968), where it delivers one of cinema's most iconic final shots.Empire State Building - A symbol of New York's skyline, this building stars in King Kong (1933) where the giant ape climbs it, creating one of the most enduring images in film history.Central Park - Central Park is a versatile backdrop in films like When Harry Met Sally (1989), offering a slice of nature amidst the urban environment, perfect for pivotal scenes.Times Square - Captured vibrantly in Vanilla Sky (2001), Times Square is depicted in its full, chaotic glory, often symbolizing the energy and pulse of the city.Brooklyn Bridge - This landmark is crucial in films like Once Upon a Time in America (1984), where it not only serves as a scenic backdrop but also as a symbol of transition and connection.Directed by Spike Lee, 25th Hour follows the last day of freedom for Montgomery Brogan (Edward Norton) before he starts a seven-year prison sentence. Set against the post-9/11 New York backdrop, the film not only explores personal redemption and despair but also captures the mood of a city in trauma. It's a poignant examination of choices, consequences, and the human capacity for adaptation.Switching gears to a lighter, yet still poignant narrative, Gargoyles is an animated series that beautifully blends mythical elements with modern settings. Set in New York City, the show features ancient creatures adapting to the 20th century and protecting the city that mirrors their castle of old. It's renowned for its dark tone and complex storylines, unusual for a children's cartoon.Whether you're a fan of dramatic tales of personal reckoning or animated adventures that blend history with fantasy, today's episode offers a rich exploration of New York City's iconic presence in cinema and television. Tune in as we traverse from real city streets to animated skylines, uncovering the stories that make New York a perennial favorite in storytelling.

fWotD Episode 2589: Saving Private Ryan Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Thursday, 6 June 2024 is Saving Private Ryan.Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 American epic war film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Robert Rodat. Set in 1944 in France during World War II, it follows a group of soldiers, led by Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), on their mission to locate Private James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon) and bring him home safely after his three brothers have been killed in action. The cast also includes Edward Burns, Tom Sizemore, Barry Pepper, Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel, Adam Goldberg, and Jeremy Davies.Inspired by the books of Stephen E. Ambrose and accounts of casualties among members of a single family such as the Niland brothers, Rodat drafted the script and Paramount Pictures hired him to finish the writing. The project came to the attention of Hanks and Spielberg, whose previous successes secured the project's development. Spielberg wanted to make Saving Private Ryan as authentic as possible, and hired Frank Darabont and Scott Frank to perform uncredited rewrites based on research and interviews with veterans. The main cast went through a week-long boot camp to understand the soldier experience. Filming took place from June to September 1997, on a $65–$70 million budget, almost entirely on location in England and Ireland. The opening Omaha Beach battle was the most demanding scene, costing $12 million to film over four weeks with 1,500 extras.Saving Private Ryan became one of the year's most successful films, earning critical acclaim for its graphic portrayal of combat. WWII veterans described the combat scenes as the most realistic portrayal of their own experiences; some were unable to watch it due to their traumatic memories. The film earned $481.8 million, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 1998, and went on to win many accolades, including Golden Globe, Academy, BAFTA, and Saturn awards.Saving Private Ryan is considered one of the greatest films ever made. Its battle scene filming techniques impacted many subsequent war, action, and superhero films, and numerous directors have cited Saving Private Ryan as an influence. It is credited with helping renew interest in WWII at the turn of the century, inspiring other films, television shows, and video games set during the war. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:04 UTC on Thursday, 6 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Saving Private Ryan on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Joanna Standard.

Strap in, folks, because we're peeling out on a cinematic odyssey that may just shift your perspective on those so-called "flops" rattling around Tinseltown. Remember "Monster Trucks"? That's where we're kicking things off, but brace yourself—it's not the takedown you'd expect. We're mounting a spirited defense of this underdog, digging into what it really takes to charm the ankle-biters of the world with Hollywood magic. And while we're talking about charm, let's not forget the behemoth of childhood nostalgia—"Free Willy." We'll unpack the art of the beloved and the berated, all while chuckling at the absurdity of a 26-year-old high school student. As we cruise through this episode, we'll navigate the nooks and crannies of character development—or the lack thereof—in our latest movie watch. Characters like Barry Pepper's sheriff and our MacGyver-esque hero Trip might have you questioning their choices, but hey, that's part of the fun, right? And speaking of fun, what's a monster truck showdown without a good old-fashioned critique of physics-defying stunts, monster intelligence, and a hearty dose of destruction without consequences? Buckle up, because we're in for some laughs, head-scratching moments, and maybe a couple of "a-ha" revelations along the way. Finally, we're revving up the conversation to include a taste of sinister surveillance, monster hunts, and the occasional philosophical musing. Plus, we'll toss some love to director Chris Wedge and his journey from "Monster Trucks" to "Ice Age," proving that in Hollywood, the road less traveled might just be the most rewarding. So, grab your headphones, and let's burn rubber through an episode that's as much a blast from the past as it is a pedal-to-the-metal thrill ride.Be our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

In 1997, Steinberg successfully sold the cable network HBO on 61*, a biographical drama about the legendary home-run race between Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle of the 1961 Yankees. The following year, Billy Crystal came aboard as a producer on the project and subsequently directed the film, starring Thomas Jane and Barry Pepper. 61* garnered 12 Emmy nominations, including Best Motion Picture for Television and Best Writing. Steinberg was also nominated for a WGA Award for the film. Steinberg then created the CBS show Without a Trace, which aired from September 26, 2002, to May 19, 2009. Without a Trace follows the cases of a Missing Persons Unit of the FBI in New York City. During his tenure as executive producer and show-runner, the show won several Emmy awards and a Golden Globe for lead actor Anthony LaPaglia, as well as earning a SAG and Humanitas nomination. Steinberg was executive producer and show-runner of Without a Trace for the first four seasons. Afterward, Steinberg created and was showrunner/executive producer of the ABC series The Nine, which he wrote with his sister, KJ Steinberg. The show ran for one season. Steinberg co-created and was executive producer of TNT's The Last Ship ,in 2014, which ran for five seasons. The Last Ship follows a naval destroyer crew, after a pandemic kills most of Earth's population. Steinberg went on to create and serve as an executive producer of the ABC American legal drama For Life, which premiered February 11, 2020.The series is a fictional legal and family drama inspired by the life of convict turned attorney Isaac Wright, Jr. The success of the show led his Channel Road Productions company to an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television. Most recently, Steinberg landed a straight to series order with Fox for DOC, an adaptation of the Italian series of the same name. Steinberg will executive produce under his Channel Road Productions. In this episode, we talk about: • His straight to series FOX show called Doc based on an Italian series • The story behind getting the pitch for For Life and why he had to come back to it • His advice on to get started writing for a TV show • His writing process and to just get through the first draft • Working with his sister KJ Steinberg on Nine (she is now working on This is Us) • Advice for actors approaching pilot auditions and why there are no small roles • The gentle balance between a strong pilot to hook in executives and having some discipline in holding back to have an engaging season • The genesis of Without a Trace and how they came up with the idea (question from Mentor David Grae) and why the pilot is the worst episode of a show • How he got the idea for 61* which focused on Roger Marris and Mickey Mantle's home run which was directed by Billy Crystal and garnered 12 Emmy nominations • Spec script on The Duel (Burr vs Hamilton) and his particular appreciation for Hamilton the Musical Guest: IMDb Wikipedia Variety article on new show DOC Host: Instagram: @MentorsontheMic @MichelleSimoneMiller Twitter: @MentorsontheMic @MichelleSimoneM Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/mentorsonthemic Website: www.michellesimonemiller.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/24mmichelle If you like this episode, check out David Grae - From Spec Scripts to Executive Producer of Madam Secretary Click here to join our Mailing list. Matthew Turner and Amelie Thomas from Fatal Attractions podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Matthew's choice True Grit. True Grit is the 2010 Coen Brothers Western adapted from the the 1968 novel of the same name. It stars Jeff Bridges as Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross and co stars Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper. The previous film adaptation starred John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell. Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old farm girl, collects her father's body after he was shot while on a trip to buy horses by Tom (Brolin) Chaney. She hires a reluctant Rooster Cogburn to track Chaney down. He agrees to take her with him but departs without her. Furious Mattie pursues him riding alone and catches up with Rooster to find him riding with Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon). Rooster is left with no choice but to carry on with Mattie in tow. It earned a whopping ten Oscar nominations and failed to win a single one. Despite this, mainly due to Roger Deakins cinematography, True Grit remains a favourite among fans of the Coens and Westerns. True Grit had a mixed response for recommendability due to its western genre, you either like them or you don't! Slightly higher scores for the other categories gives an overall rating of 3.75 The Coen Brothers are currently the top featured Flixwatcher directors (along with Tarantino) and True Grit ranks ahead The Ballad of Buster Scruggs but below No Country for Old Men. The film won five of these, including Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Film Editing, and Best Director for Spielberg, his second win in that category. After the film lost the Best Picture award to Shakespeare in Love, many film pundits criticized the Academy's decision not to award the film with the Best Picture Oscar and has continued to be considered as one of the biggest snubs in the ceremony's history. The film also won the Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Director, the BAFTA Award for Special Effects and Sound, the Directors Guild of America Award, a Grammy Award for Best Film Soundtrack, the Producers Guild of America Golden Laurel Award, and the Saturn Award for Best Action, Adventure, or Thriller Film. Saving Piivate Ryan comes in at #71 of AFI's First Time you saw the movie? Plot: An elderly veteran visits the Normandy Cemetery with his family. At a specific grave, he is overcome with emotion and begins to recall his time as a soldier. On the morning of June 6, 1944, the U.S. Army lands at Omaha Beach as part of the Normandy invasion. Captain John H. Miller leads his command, Company C, 2nd Ranger Battalion in a breakout from the beach. The staff at the United States Department of War learns that James Francis Ryan of the 101st Airborne Division is missing and presumed to be the last survivor of four brothers who are all in the military. General George C. Marshall orders Ryan to be found and sent home so that his family will not lose all its sons. Miller is ordered to lead a detachment in finding Ryan. As they arrive in the contested town of Neuville between German defenders and the 101st Airborne, Caparzo is killed by a German sniper. Miller and his men find a paratrooper named Ryan but he is not the one for whom they are searching, and they are directed to a rally point where James Francis Ryan's unit should be. Miller learns that Ryan is defending a key bridge in the town of Ramelle. En route, Miller decides against the judgment of his soldiers to neutralize a German machine gun nest, which results in Wade's death. A surviving German soldier is spared by the intervention of Upham, the detachment's interpreter, who is unused to the horrors of combat. Miller blindfolds the soldier, who has been nicknamed "Steamboat Willie", and orders him to surrender to the next Allied patrol. When Reiben threatens to desert, Miller defuses the situation by calmly telling a story that reveals his civilian background as a teacher and baseball coach, of which he has not previously spoken, and which has been the subject of much speculation among his men and a pool of about $300. Upon arriving in Ramelle, Miller's detachment makes contact with Ryan and informs him of his brothers' deaths. Though deeply upset, Ryan refuses to abandon his post defending the town's bridge, and the town soon comes under siege by attacking Germans. Miller assumes command as the only officer present. He and his unit fight alongside the 101st, but the German armor advantage takes a toll on the Americans. Jackson, Mellish and Horvath are killed along with most of the paratroopers as the Americans retreat across the town's bridge. During the final assault on the bridge, Steamboat Willie reappears and shoots Miller as he attempts to blow the bridge with pre-placed explosives, but before the German force can capture it American P-51 Mustang fighter planes and Sherman tanks arrive and halt their advance. Upham confronts Steamboat Willie, who attempts to talk Upham into letting him go again; Upham instead shoots and kills him. The mortally wounded Miller tells Ryan to "earn this" before dying, referring to the sacrifices others have made so that Ryan can have a postwar life. Returning to the present, Ryan is revealed to be the elderly veteran and the grave to be Miller's. Ryan expresses gratitude for the sacrifices made by Miller and his men, says he hopes he "earned it", and salutes the grave. TOP 51: The plot was loosely inspired by the true story of the Niland brothersScreenwriter Robert Rodat was initially inspired to write Saving Private Ryan when he saw a monument to the four sons of Agnes Allison, who were all killed in the American Civil War. However, when the premise got into the hands of producer Mark Gordon and eventually director Steven Spielberg, inspiration came from the true story of the Niland brothers. They were four brothers fighting in World War II.Two of them died and two survived. However, it was initially thought that only one of them survived, as the other one was missing and presumed dead. He turned out to be a prisoner of war in a Japanese internment camp. 2: Steven Spielberg would've released the movie with an NC-17 ratingWhile he was making Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg feared that the movie's brutal violence would lead the MPAA to assign it an NC-17 rating. Big Hollywood studios usually strive to avoid NC-17 ratings like the Bubonic Plague, and make whatever cuts are necessary to change the rating, because they're box office poison. Some theaters won't show them and the ones that will show them can only admit audience members over a certain age. But Spielberg was so happy with Saving Private Ryan that if it had come back from the MPAA with an NC-17 rating, he still would've released it. 3: The gunfire sound effects are authenticTo acquire the right sound effects for the guns used in the movie, Saving Private Ryan's sound team went to a live machine gun firing range near Atlanta that was owned by a weapons manufacturer. There, they sourced all of the period-specific weaponry that was being used in the movie, that they needed to find the sounds for, and they just started firing them at the shooting range. 4: Saving Private Ryan is the last non-digitally edited Best Film Editing winnerPretty much every movie in the last 20 years has been digitally edited because digital editing – while losing some of the soul of the filmmaking process – is a lot cheaper, easier, and more secure than the old “cutting room” method. Saving Private Ryan was the last movie to be edited using non-digital technology to win the Academy Award for Best Film Editing. Every subsequent winner of the Oscar for editing has been edited digitally. And digital isn't going away any time soon, so Saving Private Ryan will probably hold onto the distinction of last non-digitally edited Best Film Editing winner indefinitely. 5: The D-Day landings sequence cost $11 millionSaving Private Ryan's opening D-Day landings scene took up a hefty chunk of the film's $70 million budget, costing $11 million to pull off. Steven Spielberg decided chose not to storyboard the sequence at all, instead letting the action tell him where to point the camera (he elected to use a handheld camera for the scene) on the days of shooting. The producers recruited 40 barrels of fake blood and more than 1,000 extras for the scene. Between 20 and 30 of these extras were amputees who could be fitted with prosthetic limbs for the sole purpose of being blown off in explosions. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** - Dude on top of the tank at the end who didn't move, and got blown up. Obviously it was a mannequin. **REVIEW AND RATING**TreyChrisStephen .5Tucker .5 TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 Saving Private Ryan3 Ghostbusters4 Sandlot5 Color out of space Chris:1. sandlots2. Spike Lee has spent most of his long career directing movies about racial strife, but 25th Hour isn't really about that. The terrorist attack on 9/11 wasn't even a year old when they were making this movie, so Lee instead chose to lace those complicated feelings throughout what is otherwise a quiet character study about one man's last day of freedom. Edward Norton is strong (as he always is) in the leading role as an intelligent drug dealer who made bad decisions and has to face the consequences, but the supporting cast is excellent too. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rosario Dawson, Brian Cox and Anna Paquin all shine. It's Barry Pepper though who gets to play the character with the most layers. And the heartbreaking ending that evokes a certain 1980s Jesus movie is what makes 25th Hour so memorable. So know that it's all right (even if it probably isn't going to be all right) as the 458th Ellises' Analysis worries about a future in prison while enjoying one last day. Alex and Rocco join Matt to discuss how Spielberg and writer Robert Rodat crafted the "documentary realism" approach to the true story of the Niland Brothers, why Tom Hanks decided it was time to take his friendship with Steve to the next level, the trial-by-fire boot camp that the military advisor Dale Dye put Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, Jeremy Davies, Adam Goldberg, Edward Burns, Barry Pepper, and Tom Sizemore through, which almost convinced a few of them to quit, and who almost played their roles instead.Next week, we'll continue with Saving Private Ryan Part Two, kicking off with a behind-the-scenes breakdown of how the Normandy Beach battle sequences were created. It's a new mini-marathon, folks! This summer, we're gettin' in the ring with Steven for the SPIELBERG SUMMER SLAM! In the spirit of the movie we are reviewing I thought it would be humorous to make the show notes excessively long so that it would take you three hours to read them but it turns out that a) no one reads the show notes anyway and b) that would take me an extremely long time so instead you can recreate that experience by simply looping over these next sections a few thousand times. Frank Darabont had already directed the Stephen King adaptation THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, initially a box office disappointment which at some point was apparently unanimously declared a modern classic, before he worked on bringing another of the Maine-born authors stories to the screen with 1999's THE GREEN MILE. Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) is a Warden Supervisor at Cold Mountain Penitentiary's Death Row, given the movies titular nickname because of the green linoleum floor which leads from the doomed prisoners cells to the electric chair. Assisted by a team including David Morse's powerful but respectful Brutus, Barry Pepper's youthful Dean and Jeffrey DeMunn's humane Harry, his aim is to provide condemned men with dignity in their last days, an endeavour complicated by the sadistic Percy (Doug Hutchison), foisted upon him by virtue of the state governor's nepotism. When the physically imposing but gentle and childlike John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), sentenced to death after being convicted of the rape and murder of two young girls, joins the rest of the inmates on Death Row, inexplicable events will bind both prisoners and guards for the rest of their lives. It's fair to say that Darabont takes his time breathing life into King's characters on screen; the movie has a whopping 189 minute run time and focuses heavily on drama and relationship building before introducing the supernatural elements to the story. Thankfully it is a superb array of actors that he has assembled, with the late Duncan giving perhaps a career best performance (Kingpin aside), a truly unforgettable villain in Hutchison's Percy and a talented ensemble cast featuring the likes of Bonnie Hunt, James Cromwell, Sam Rockwell and mouse-fondler Michael Jeter. I didn't join the rest of the Dads for this review so I have no idea what they are going to say. I imagine at least one of us finds this maudlin, over-wrought and just too long. If I had been there, I might have talked about the troubling 'magical negro' aspect to the story (quoting Spike Lee there my friends, don't judge me) so consider yourself lucky you were spared that. Most of all I'm wondering just how long they will spend talking about the part where Michael Clarke Duncan touches Tom Hanks's penis. I reckon some of the guys could do 3 hours on that alone.
