Today's episode takes us from the fields to the heart of London to reflect on a truly unique and thought-provoking exhibition that has just wrapped up at Somerset House in London, marking its 25th anniversary. Titled Soil: The World at Our Feet, the exhibition brought together visionary artists to reframe how we think about the ground beneath us.Far from being “just dirt,” this exhibition invited visitors to see soil as a living, breathing system—one that underpins not only agriculture but culture, climate, and community. Bridget Elworthy and Henrietta Courtauld from The Land Gardeners came up with the concept for the exhibition and they speak to Ben in this episode They talk about how the exhibition came to life, what it revealed, and put their case as to why soil should matter to everyone—not just farmers.SOIL | Somerset HouseHome — the land gardenersSoil Home — the land gardeners

As Henrietta Courtauld and Bridget Elworthy explain in our first Earthly Matters episode, people come for the flowers but they stay for the soil. Since forming their company, The Land Gardeners, in 2011, they have combined their cut flower-growing and landscape design businesses with a mission that fuels them on a daily basis: researching the earth beneath our feet to better understand how to repair the soil that feeds nearly everything we build our existence upon.Their work has seen them transform unloved gardens and agricultural plots into hives of thriving, promising productivity - and Henrietta and Bridget are always looking towards the techniques that the less courageous will take years to deploy. This year, their insight is being shared in a major exhibition at Somerset House, called Soil: The World at Our Feet. Amid drifts of snowdrops in the garden of Henrietta's Cornish home, we spoke about how The Land Gardeners' persistent commitment to soil health has taken them all over the world, learning, speaking and spreading the secrets of soil. Use code WWGSPRING at Crocus.co.uk's checkout to save 20% on full priced plants. SOIL: Common Ground is a three-part podcast series produced by Somerset House exploring what soil can teach us about being human, through the lens of art. Our entire existence is dependent on our relationship with soil. As awareness builds of the enormity of the ecological crisis that we are facing, a growing number of artists are engaging with soil as a material in their work. This three part series responds to the Somerset House exhibition ‘Soil: The World at Our Feet', unearthing soil's role in our future through the work of artists and thinkers working with it. Soil is the basis of many creation stories around the world. It is our beginning, and it is what we will return to. In Episode 1 of Common Ground we look at soil as the matter from which life emerges. Exploring growth, beginnings and the ways soil as a material offers unique opportunities for exploration. We hear from artist Asad Raza who makes ‘neo-soil' from scratch and covers the floor of galleries with it. Artist Eve Tagny's work examines the cultivation of the Rose as a way to ask questions about the ways we interact with the world. Agroecologist Nicole Masters and farmer Abby Rose, lay out what soil is and why it holds the key to our survival. The episode is set within the garden of our presenter Shenece Oretha. Working with soil has shaped her relationship to the place where she lives and informed her art practice. The series launches off from the Somerset House exhibition SOIL: The World at Our Feet. SOIL: Common Ground is a three-part podcast series produced by Somerset House exploring what soil can teach us about being human, through the lens of art. Much of the history of human making springs from the soil. Cuneiform, the earliest form of writing, was engraved into clay; paint pigments come from minerals in the soil; and much of our material history is held in ceramics. But soil is not neutral; it is deeply entangled with politics of ownership embedded in the land. In this episode Shenece Oretha probes the ways the soil and clay are inspiring artists today, looking at the stories soil can tell about our past and our potential future. Ceramicist and writer Jennifer Lucy Allan reflects on the ways clay connects us to the earliest forms of making. Artists Annalee Davis and Lauren Gault look at the ways soil bears witness to our histories, from the trauma of the plantation to the deep time of paleontology. We create art from soil, but through our extraction and interaction, it is also changed. How can we heal our relationship with the soil and in so doing, transform our relationship with the planet? Farmer and food justice advocate Leah Penniman unpacks how indigenous practices of soil care can reverse some of the most egregious effects of climate change. The series launches off from the Somerset House exhibition SOIL: The World at Our Feet. Our Future is tied to the future of our soil. Our decisions as to how we care for and use it matter. Soil teaches us that cycles are ongoing, and even in decline every day offers us opportunities for new beginnings. In this final episode Shenece Oretha explores the regenerative qualities of soil and composting as a model for personal redemption. We hear from Palestinian grower Mohammed Saleh whose life story offers a personal story of hope, looking at how permaculture and art can help to heal the destructive impacts of war. Somerset Studios artist Harun Morrision's singing compost invites us to see decay in a new light and Fin Jordâo lays out how composting can be a radical action for rethinking our relationships with each other and the planet. Does the future hold a closer, more natural relationship with the soil by rethinking our relationship to burial? Radical undertaker Ru Callander reconsiders our attitude to death. Episode 286 President Trump has signed executive orders pulling the US out of the Paris climate agreement, and out of the World Health Organization. Although he claims that withdrawing from Paris will save the US $1trillion a year, the reality is much less clear. As the world's second largest emitter and amid bans on renewable energy permits, just how catastrophic is this for global climate action? Leaving the WHO raises concerns too over the future of global health action. You probably know of the placebo effect, but have you heard of the ‘nocebo' effect? Known as the evil twin of the placebo, this is where being told something won't work or is inferior can make it less effective or problematic. Find out how researchers have been testing it out. Last year we heard the shock discovery that oxygen is being produced in the deep ocean. Believed to be coming from metallic nodules on the sea floor, the finding could upend accepted wisdom. And now the researchers who discovered this have set out on a 3 year mission for more data. Hear about the planned research and why lead researcher Andrew Sweetman has been subjected to “online bullying”. A new exhibition at Somerset House in London is celebrating the wonder of soil, titled ‘SOIL: The World at Our Feet'. Hear from co-curators of the show, Henrietta Courtauld and Bridget Elworthy. August 27, 2023 Daily Devotion: "Lamp to Our Feet" Psalm 119:105 New International Version  105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. God's Word is a “lamp to our feet.” A lamp illuminates the area around it. Likewise, the Bible is essential for seeing and interpreting our emotions, relationships, and circumstances. Our own perceptions may be incomplete or unreliable, but the lamp of God's Word reveals everything. We also, however, want to move forward. The Word shines a light on the path, showing us where we're headed. With God's help, we may move in discernment, using the “wisdom from above” (James 3:17). Whether you face difficult circumstances or have a decision to make, let the Word serve as a lamp and a light. You can trust God to help you see more clearly and move ahead without fear. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gerzon-etino/message

One of the most powerful ways we resist racism and de-center Whiteness as representative of all experiences is to tell our stories. Towards the end of June (Immigrant Heritage Month), I caught up with my good friend Rowana Abbensetts-Dobson, writer, founder of Spoken Black Girl and mental health advocate, about her debut novel: Departure Story, which highlights the Black immigrant experience through the eyes of Celestine Samuels, a young Guyanese woman immigrating to the U.S. to attend college, who is finding her voice and speaking up for what she believes in and staying rooted in her native country.  Rowana and I delved into everything from the urgency of making space for writers of color to the role faith plays in her creative work, and why the Spoken Black Girl community she is building matters immensely, "our healing [as a community) is intertwined." Throughout the book, Dr. Davis thoughtfully contemplates the scriptural significance of God's creation of Eve; compares women's leadership advances in the marketplace and church; and shares real-life stories and perceptions about women in leadership offered by present-day church leaders. Walt reminds us: "Jesus is synonymous with social justice."  We delved into quite a bit, including:  - Jesus' powerful example of being in genuine relationship with people, and how embodying this way of being can transform us all.  - The call throughout scripture to tear down walls we erect (because of difference), and embrace a radical love of our neighbors and community (Lev. 19:18 and Mark  12:31).  - What the prophet Amos teaches us about resisting oppression and God's concept of justice. Check out Walt's essay within his book, Chapter 32: "Social Justice is Always in Season"  - Reclaiming Christ's message of embracing service for others: "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free." “Thoughts and prayers” has become one of the king cliches of our time. So how do we begin to put meaningful action behind them to make a difference in the lives of the suffering? You're listening to Happy & Holy, a podcast about discipleship and community and how we meet each other right where we are to be the people of God on planet earth. And when we do, we have the potential to become the happy and holy disciples we are meant to be. I'm your host Kate Boyd, and today, I am joined by Lindsey Krinks and we're talking all about how to marry the physical and the spiritual in our worship and care. Lindsey is an activist, street chaplain, and co-founder of Open Table Nashville, an interfaith homeless outreach nonprofit. For over a decade, she has worked on the underside of Nashville—the streets, encampments, jails, slums, and underpasses—while also working with faith leaders, community organizers, and public officials to make the city more hospitable and just. In 2013, she graduated from Vanderbilt Divinity School with a Master of Theological Studies degree and was ordained to serve as an interfaith street chaplain. Her first book, Praying with Our Feet, is now available for purchase!I was really encouraged and refreshed by the portrait of ministry Lindsey paints and how we can each step into that same role in our own lives. Belief and practice can't be separated. They were always meant to be tied together, and Jesus showed us how. I'm grateful for people like Lindsey who continually point us back to embodying him in word and deed. Join me this week as we journey beyond any one neighborhood and go to many different parts of New York and explore some of the City’s most interesting and fascinating cemeteries. My guests will be Joyce Gold of Joyce Gold History Tours, and Vincent and Robert Gardino, authors of Grave Trippers: History at Our Feet. Segment 1 The show begins with Jeff introducing the first guest, Joyce Gold, who begins with his history initially growing up in Pennsylvania and first moving to New York and outlines her journey from working in finance to her current line of work today, finding a passion in showing the history of the city and how this work comes to include cemeteries. She speaks on the connections cemeteries have to religious institutions and how burials correlated to superstitions at the time, going into the history of grave-sites for Native Americans and the early Dutch settlers. The talk continues with the burial history of the Trinity Church Yard and St. Paul’s Chapel, as well as a history of segregation and exclusion at these sites. Segment 2 Joyce informs the audience about a few upcoming tours this spring and where listeners can find information. They return to the topic with the African graveyard and the establishment of the first non-sectarian cemeteries in New York as well as a few notable people buried at those sights. Jeffs notes a history of placing remains inside vaults and Joyce talks about the history of Trinity Cemetery in uptown, the segment closing with some interesting tombstones and notable burials  at this location. Segment 3 In the second half of the show, Jeff introduces the next guests Vincent and Robert Gardino, who talk about their history growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, their education, and their previous careers, all leading towards how they developed their niche interests in exploring cemeteries and burial grounds, being inspired by the assassination of JFK to go to DC, and being in awe by the majesty of the setting. The brothers also talk about their history collecting autographs and their reasoning behind the name of their book ‘Grave Trippers’ as well as how they came to know James McPherson. Segment 4 The brothers talk about upcoming tours this year, as well as their motivations behind including Greenwood Cemetery in the book, the burial site being a natural choice due to the aesthetics notoriety of the buried, and they discuss the spectacular architecture that decorates the sight as well as a few familiar names buried at that sight. The three also several famous musicians, politicians, and authors currently resting at The Woodlawn Cemetery and Conservatory. The brothers give their preferences between the two cemeteries, noting which has their favorite mausoleums. The show closes with the brothers listing their favorite burials and resting places.

Though considered too morbid for many Americans who aren’t visiting departed loved one to visit, according to Vincent and Robert Gardino, cemeteries are peaceful and welcoming places full of wonderful stories. In their new book “Grave Trippers: History at Our Feet,” the two brothers visit gravesites of noted historical personalities on the East Coast to rediscover the remarkable people buried there in the hope of dispelling the notion that graveyards are dark and depressing places. Join us for a new take on your local cemetery with Robert and Vincent Gardino in this edition of Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI.

Holiness is not about perfection, it is about purpose. I am called to holiness because I have been set apart for a life that God has for me. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16 We are in part 2 of the teaching series, Chasing Holiness. A huge step in chasing holiness is developing habits of holiness. “The cost of good habits are today, the cost of bad habits comes tomorrow.” Habits of holiness can revolve around 4 different areas. Our MOUTH (what we say). Our EYES (what we see). Our HANDS (what we hold on to). Our FEET (where we go). Which of these 4 areas would you say trips you up the most? To be holy is to belong to God. “Holy” or “Holiness” is not a word we hear often in our culture, yet it is used over 700 times in the Bible. The definition of “holy” is to be “separate, altogether different, set aside for God for a specific purpose.” Key verses: 1 Peter 2:9; Psalm 51:3-4; Matthew 5:29; Philippians 2:13; Psalm 139:23-34; 1 timothy 4:7-8; Hebrews 12:1-2

January 24 Care of Our Feet He will keep the feet of his saints. (1 Samuel 2:9)  The way is slippery and our feet are feeble, but the Lord will keep our feet. If we give ourselves up by obedient faith to be His holy ones, He will Himself be our guardian. Not only will He charge His angels to keep us, but He Himself will preserve our goings. He will keep our feet from falling so that we do not defile our garments, wound our souls, and cause the enemy to blaspheme. He will keep our feet from wandering so that we do not go into paths of error, or ways of folly, or courses of the world's custom. He will keep our feet from swelling through weariness, or blistering because of the roughness and length of the way. He will keep our feet from wounding: our shoes shall be iron and brass so that even though we tread on the edge of the sword, or on deadly serpents, we shall not bleed or be poisoned. He will also pluck our feet out of the net. We shall not be entangled by the deceit of our malicious and crafty foes. With such a promise as this, let us run without weariness and walk without fear. He who keeps our feet will do it effectually.
