I sometimes wonder, while writing these guest photographer posts, how many listeners or viewers actually read them. The truth is it doesn't matter to me, I write them for myself more than anyone else, and I find that trying to put someone's talent into written words really helps me distill my thoughts about their work. Take today's guest, Melody Mellinger, for example... I think my first introduction to Melody's work was back in February of 2020, for Episode 4 of the monthly Behind the Shot Critique shows I used to do with Don Komarechka - damn I miss doing those. After that, I think Melody must have had an image in at least 7 of the critique shows. What she doesn't know is that in every critique show, 28 in all, I always tried to have a mix of shots, so that there would be a few that we might have a lot to contribute to, and others that could work as a reference point, a baseline for what a great shot looks like. Her images were part of that later category. One image I distinctly remember was in critique show 5. It was called Open Wide, and it is a magnificent shot. My first thought was that I wouldn't have anything to say about it - yeah, it's that good - but when I brought it on screen during the show a few things came to mind, and Melody actually went and redid the image with our suggestions. Here's the BEFORE and AFTER for you. Since those first introductions to Melody's work I have become such a fan. What I find fascinating is that Melody's adventures in nature photography didn't begin until 2015, with her first DSLR, a Canon Rebel T6i. What led her to bird photography? Her children. She knew they were going to get tired of being models much faster than she was going to master that Canon, so she moved on to flowers and butterflies, before moving on again to the challenge of backyard songbirds. Since 2022 she has used a Canon 5D Mark IV, and for her bird photography she pairs it with a 100-400mm and a 1.4x extender. Yes, you read that right... a DSLR, not some new mirrorless body, and the shots she is making with it will blow your mind. Next time you think you need new gear, go browse Melody's Instagram. You'll quickly realize that you probably don't, and you can thank her for saving you money. Back in January, Melody posted that she'd won something from FStoppers, and the shot that was featured in their Best Images of 2024 Critique show stopped me in my tracks. I mean, wow... just wow. I knew right then I needed to get her on the show. Join nature and wildlife photographer Melody Mellinger and me as we discuss her amazing bird photography, and as we take a deep dive into the shot that she had featured in the FStoppers Best Images of 2024 Contest. Tati Bruening and Anya Anti are two rising stars at the confluence of photography, digital assets, and social influence. In this week's episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we get the lowdown on their burgeoning careers in fashion / beauty and conceptual / fine art portraits in part two of our chats from B&H's 2023 Depth of Field Conference. Above photograph © Tati Bruening We start with Tati Bruening, who shares how her plea to “Make Instagram Instagram Again” became a global meme, ultimately prompting a response from the platform's head. Learn how she spent the pandemic focused on daily DIY shoots with friends, allowing her to quickly master her Canon 5D Mark IV inside and out. Today, Bruening is supported by a powerhouse management team. Hear how she made these essential connections, get tips on working with a manager, and learn which pitfalls to avoid. After a break, we shift gears to Anya Anti, who fills us in on the intricate set design and attentive compositing work behind her whimsical portraits, which seamlessly bridge fantasy and real life. She distinguishes between shooting self-portraits for a more personal approach and posing models as alter egos for more control behind the camera. We also tackle the elephant in the room—artificial intelligence in photographic creation—with Anti weighing in on both the significant ethical issues posed by AI and its positive aspects as incorporated in Adobe's smart selection tools. Landscape photography is fun for both the consumer and the creator. The consumer gets to enjoy remote parts of the world they may not have otherwise seen. And the creator gets to have the thrill of adventure and the sense of tranquility that often accompanies this type of photographic practice. Of course, we've shared plenty of stunning images made by the best landscape photographers around, and in this article we're going to celebrate our favorites. You can view this article and much more with minimal ads in our brand new app for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. Cath Simard Turns Her Landscape Photography Into NFTs Cath Simard joined us as a guest on Inside The Photographer's Mind. She's an introvert who loves going on long hikes alone and creating images nothing short of mindblowing. She's used her photographic style to tap into the NFT market. In this podcast, she told us she'd made more money through NFTs than in her whole photography career. Check out her story here. Caitlin Fullam Creates Surreal Landscape Photography Beyond the joys of landscape photography, Caitlin Fullam has a deeper motive to go out and create. “These photos were an escape for me during a dark time,” she told us in a recent interview. She aimed to create out of this world images that made her feel like she was escaping the world she felt trapped within. She certainly accomplished her goal, not just with herself, but for us too. Spending time with her photography lets us forget reality, even only for a fleeting moment. Check it out here. Alicja Zmysłowska Combines Dogs and Landscape Photography Love dogs? Mesmerized by landscapes? If it's a yes to both, you're going to love the photography of Alicja Zmysłowska. She finds the most beautiful locations and places man's best friend in the center of them. She doesn't Photoshop the dogs into her landscape photography. Instead, she allows the human to stay with them (with a leash) and then photoshops them out. Zmysłowska has a range of cameras and lenses at her disposal, turning to the Canon 5D Mark III, the Canon 5D Mark IV, and the Canon EOS 5DS for her bodies, and the Canon 16-35mm 2.8L and the Canon 135mm 2.0L for her glass. Check out her full story here. Paolo Pettigiani Landscape Photography Goes Infrared Peru and Bolivia are home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in Latin America. So many photographers hit these spots to create landscape photography. Because of that, Paolo Pettigiani decided to put his own twist on things. Opting to shoot with Kodak Aerochrome, a now-discontinued infrared film roll, Pettigiani made a series of images that stand on their own. We're glad he still had access to the film roll! Check out his here. Ludwig Favre Makes Haunting Images Ludwig Favre began his journey in photography at the tender age of six. And it's a passion that's stayed with him ever since. He shoots his haunting, mysterious landscape photography in Oregon, a part of the States known for its glorious nature. Favre uses a Panasonic Lumix S1R and pairs it with the Panasonic Lumix 16-35mm f4 to make most of his work. However, he also uses the DJI Mavic 2 Pro to offer a different perspective. You can see his work here. Send Us Your Landscapes! We would love to see your landscape photography if you feel it's worth our attention. You can send it in using the form below. If we like it, then we'll be in touch about giving you a feature. Which was your favorite landscape photographer from the selection above? What gear do you enjoy using when making landscape images? Let us know in the comments below. Thanks for reading. Want to get your work featured? Here's how to do it! Lead image by Caitlin Fullam. All images used with permission. Have you ever wanted to try a 365 Project but don’t know where to start? Or did you start and give up part way through? Or is this your first time even hearing about a 365 project?  A 365 project is where you take an image a day for an entire year. My friend Ashley Marston has been photographing her daily life with her family in this way for over 6 years! She’s made capturing memories a habit and will inspire you to do the same. In our conversation, Ashley will peel back the curtain and tell you all about her inspiring project – from fun gear to how to display your images to staying motivated – she’s got all the best advice. In addition to capturing personal work, Ashley is also a phenomenal family photographer serving clients in British Columbia. You’re going to learn so much about balancing personal and professional projects in this episode! In this podcast we cover: How burritos bonded our friendship and the basics of Ashley’s work.  At Clickaway, we met when she offered me her burrito and we’ve been friends ever since! Ashley is a birth and family photographer and 6 years ago, she started “A Daily Occurance,” a 365 project documenting her own family. She’s also started creating family films like the ones below. Switching gears and styles in photography. (7:00) Her process of choosing to specialize in documentary style work. “I think that when you’re really passionate about something and you’re driven by something, people see that and they’re drawn to it.” Showing what you want to shoot really works. We talk about the fear in changes – including Ashley’s shift away from traditional newborn photography. How Ashley got started doing her 365 project. (12:50) She decided to start the project when she realized that life was going so fast and she wanted to capture the daily moments with her kids. It’s a time capsule of sorts to really remember the moments that matter. These images could communicate to her kids her love for them and journal her way through their story. It helps her own her motherhood journey, but also technically become a better photographer through shooting daily.  How Ashley finds inspiration doing this project year after year. (18:00) “Them in themselves is an inspiration.” She also mentions the kids’ connection with the animals help too. But there definitely are dull days and dreary months. Honing in on details helps give new inspiration. Ashley’s go-to camera. (20:30) Her camera is always on her – it even goes with her to the grocery store! She shoots a Canon 5D Mark IV and takes it everywhere. She doesn’t use iPhone photos in the project – only her Canon or the drone.  Do her kids get tired of being photographed? (22:45) Definitely, there are times when she kids don’t want to do it or they complain. She reminds them of their importance, but doesn’t bribe her kids into doing it. Ashley makes it a big part of their lives including printing canvases and books as well as making slideshows that her kids love to watch. She takes photos of her kids not looking or noticing. Let them be. When they’re feeling it, take advantage of that, if they’re not, let it rest.  How to stay motivated and complete a project like this. (3:00) Ashley’s top tips: Keep your camera out. Have a central location in your house – but don’t pack it away in your camera bag. Have it readily available.  Shoot and edit daily. Ashley edited during nap time or quiet times to edit. You get faster at culling. She chooses to post daily on social media and made that decision as a family. She’s usually one day behind – posting the next day. Shoot throughout the days and potentially call these shots different days. She’ll bank photos. Break the rules and be okay with it.  Ashley’s gear list to help keep her images fresh and fun. (37:30) She has done all the fun little tricks – she calls it her “tickle trunk” which is a Canadian thing from a children’s tv show. Because she lives in an area with a lot of water (ocean, lake, and river) she does underwater work both for her 365 project and client work. She’s now an ambassador for Aquatech. Her drone is also something she uses for personal and client work. She recommends the Mavic Mini for a cheaper solution that doesn’t require a drone license. Self care as a creative and mother. (51:15) Ashley sees her personal work as what feeds her soul. It lights the fire inside of her and helps get her through the other culling and editing work. Her 365 project is now habitual and she can’t see herself ever stopping. How Ashley displays her photos. (55:00) She recommends Chatbooks and Blurb for printing books. Also look below to see the canvases on display in her home. I also recommend Fracture for glass prints.   Episode Links: HoneyBook: www.share.honeybook.com/twyla In addition to a FREE 7 day trial and 50% off your first year of HoneyBook, you'l also receive the templates I use to communicate with my clients preloaded in your account!   If you want to connect with me, my guests and other listeners in the Emotional Storytelling community join the Facebook group here.   Follow along: www.instagram.com/ashleymarstonphotography www.instagram.com/somethingrad www.instagram.com/twyla.jones www.instagram.com/emotionalstorytelling   Share on Pinterest:

On today’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we speak with the winners of our two 2018 sweepstakes. During the first part of our show, we meet the winners of our Fujifilm X-H1 Sweepstakes, get to know a little about their photography, and hear their early opinions of the Fujifilm X-H1 and Fujifilm X-E3 cameras. After a short break, we will catch up with the winners of our Canon 5D Mark IV Sweepstakes, which took place in January, 2018. We join New York resident Nalane Singh, who won the Fujifilm X-E3 and Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 lens, to speak about her early impressions of the camera and her plans to use it to advance her street photography. We also speak with the grand-prize winner, Californian  Brian Duckart, who received the Fujifilm X-H1 mirrorless camera with the FUJINON XF 35mm f/2 lens. He, too, lets us know the work he expects to do with his new camera and how it has been performing since he’s had it. In the second half of our show, we catch up with the photographers who won cameras in our Canon 5D Mark IV sweepstakes. Both Hillary Dunning and Tim Couch address the creative boost they have felt since receiving their new Canon DSLRs. Hillary Dunning, who won the Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera with a 50mm f/1.8 lens, is a nature photographer who has been invited to exhibit her work in regional shows over the course of the past nine months, and is exploring other genres, as well. She discusses the advantages of a fast lens, how the new camera has enabled experimentation, and why it’s the perfect camera for hiking. Tim Couch is a working photographer and the Canon 5D Mark IV is a professional tool that he has incorporated into his workflow. We speak with Couch about the camera’s advantages when shooting live music events and boxing, his two main endeavors. We learn that he is now starting a photo-based webzine, and we discuss which lenses he is looking to buy now that he is using such a high-resolution camera. We could not be happier to share our love of photography and are so pleased to know that the sweepstakes have helped some of our listeners improve their work or simply sparked their creativity. We look forward to staying in touch with all our winners and following their output in the years to come—and be sure to keep an eye out for our next sweepstakes.
