I connected with Eliisa over our shared love of true nutrition. Her story is one that illustrates the power of true nutrition to heal yo-yo dieting and a disordered relationship with food. I was blown away by Eliisa's positivity, power and happiness, and I want you guys to know that this is how EVERYONE who's truly nourished looks, feels and sounds. It's your birthright to feel this way, too! In this episode, we teach you how using our favorite nutrient analysis tool, Cronometer. In this chat, Eliisa tells a story that's familiar to so many of us: feeling frustrated with doing our best to stick to what we think is a "healthy" diet, while still not seeing results or feeling fatigued ad frustrated. Then, Eliisa learned about true nutrition - focusing on hitting 100% of micros and macros as a way to fuel her body rather than deprive it. As a result, her health, happiness and performance soared. This is a story we hear OVER AND OVER again in our clinic, as well, when people finally learn the secrets of nutrition that they didn't know before. We want you to have this story, too. Please note, if you have an active eating disorder or are triggered by discussions about food and calories, this is not a chat for you. Instead, schedule a 15-minute Discovery Call with our practice to see how we recommend that you get started on your journey to food freedom and true health today. A recent study conducted by the Williams Institute at UCLA estimated that roughly 10% of young people identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual, and nearly 1% identify as trans. These numbers are almost certainly underestimates. If you're a caring adult, you're take these numbers seriously and wondering how you can create a safe, inclusive and healthy environment for the young people in your life who may fall into these categories. We talk a lot about sexual health, consent, gender, boundaries, self-love and body image in my clinic, and I'm honored that Coach Sommer Mahoney joined us today for a critical conversation about how to upskill so that we can support LGBTQIA+ youth as they navigate childhood, puberty, relationships, love, sex and more. Coach Mahoney is uniquely equipped to educate us about this topic for a number of reasons. She's also dedicated to teaching other adults how to get it right when it comes to their kids. I am super grateful for the time she spent with us and know you'll love this talk. Important timestamps so you can get right to the business of learning: 1:00 What does LGBTQIA+ mean? 3:30 What do LGBTQIA+ youth need from their parents? 5:30 How can parents help kids think critically about societal expectations regarding gender and sexuality? 11:30 How to we help kids navigate the TIA part of LGBTQIA+? 17:00 How likely are kids to talk with their parents about identifying as LGBTQIA+? 21:00 How do we navigate sleepovers as parents who want to create an inclusive and safe environment for LGBTQIA+ youth? 23:30 Safe sex for LGBTQIA+ youth . 30:00 How to support LGBTQIA+ youth in the day to day. Fertility, Nutrition & Mental Health Could your depression or anxiety be giving you clues about the underlying conditions that are making it harder for you to conceive naturally? The answer is YES. Dr. Emily and Dr. Kate chat about the nutrients that matter in both mental and reproductive health, and how you can use both your diet and mindset to maximize your chances of happily growing your family. Some of what we covered today 1. You may think that you're depressed because you're going through treatment for subfertility. But what if you're depressed BECAUSE of low vitamin D, thyroid, B vitamin or amino acid status and THAT is impacting your fertility? This is way more common that you think! There are a number of studies that suggest that correcting these nutrient deficiencies can improve chances of conception by 10-65%! 2. What if the anxiety you're feeling about getting pregnant is actually due to low inositol, low zinc, or low magnesium? All of these nutrient deficiencies impact fertility, particularly men with sperm fragmentation issues or women with PCOS / insulin resistance as part of their picture. Have your doctor screen you for these common conditions to give yourself the chance to heal both anxiety and subfertility. 3. The Mediterranean Diet can improve fertilty by 40-60%! If you're wondering how to make this diet work for you, contact Dr. Emily or Dr. Kate and we'll explain more. 4. Mindset is a huge part of managing stress when you're trying to grow a family. Uncertainty is a big part of that. So please hear Dr. Emily and Dr. Kate loud and clear: YOU WILL GROW YOUR FAMILY IF THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT. It may or may not be through natural conception, but the great news is that that is not the only way to grow your family. Chats about caregiving, fostering, adoption, volunteering and mentoring should be more accepted parts of every day culture. Dr. Emily and Dr. Kate are part of normalizing these conversations in medicine with *all* adults regardless of fertility status. Dr. Kate suggests you start following great influencers like Foster the Family and organizations like AdoptUSKids and Pacific Northwest Adoption Exchange if you want to learn more. A big thank you to Dr. Gabe and the team at Kinetic Physical Therapy for having me on their show to talk about movement and naturopathic medicine! I'm a huge fan of physical therapy because I've seen it change so many of my patients' lives for the better. When we're able to correct underlying structural issues in the body, pain levels go down, blood flow improves, and physical issues that have been plaguing people for years can finally heal. Physical therapists have doctorate-level education and are the true experts in healing physical ailments from the inside-out. Whether you want to decrease pain, improve performance, or increase mobility, stability and balance, they're your best allies and are a natural part of any truly integrative health team. Kinetic Physical Therapy is an awesome group to work with and they take pretty much all insurance plans. The bonus is that, in Pennsylvania, you don't even need a referral from your primary care doctor to go see them. You can just schedule your first consult and get started! Dr. Gabe and I connected over our passion for using medicine to truly improve people's lives. In our chat we talk about the following Why truly personalized medicine requires one-on-one time with your doctor (minutes 3-10) Why we chose to study the types of medicine we did (11-16) Why no one doctor knows it all and the smartest doctors we know always reach across the aisle and work in integrative teams (17-20) What appointment are like at my practice (20-22) Why it's not your fault if meditation hasn't worked for you and how I use technology / biofeedback to help people learn to breathe and relax (22 - 24) Why I'm starting a non-profit to bring you expertise from everywhere & out-of-the-box answers to common medical issues (27-31) Why a doctor who's driven by your story and your outcome is the best type of doctor to have in your corner (31-34) Would love to hear your thoughts and comments. If you're inspired to join my practice as a client and want to know more about how our partnership could look, schedule your discovery call with me so that we can talk about what we can do - together - for your health. Big thanks to Dr. Gabriel Kresge, Director of West Chester Kinetic Physical Therapy, for joining us to talk about weightlifting, powerlifting, hormones, bones, metabolism and health. Powerlifting is Preventive Medicine Powerlifting is one of my new favorite preventive medicines to recommend for people, because it does all of these things for you (and more)! Weightlifting's Health Benefits Weightlifting increases bone density Weightlifting helps reverse osteoporosis and osteopenia Weightlifting increases muscle mass Weightlifting increases functional strength and balance Weightlifting boosts metabolic rate and reduces body fat Powerlifting increases testosterone and growth hormone Weightlifting Improves insulin sensitivity and helps reverse type 2 diabetes Weightlifting helps reverse hypertension Weightlifting improves libido Weightlifting decreases fatigue and improves energy Weightlifting can decreases chronic pain Just try to name a pill that does all this! You can't. Because there isn't one. And if there was, it would certainly by a million dollars a dose. Exercise is the intervention that promises to give you all of these benefits - without side effects - if done correctly. It only has side benefits :) The problems with exercise come in when you're doing it wrong. There are a number of ways to get exercise wrong. Common Weightlifting Mistakes You're doing the wrong exercises for your body. You haven't fully healed injuries before lifting heavy weights. You're lifting with the wrong form. You're not on the right lifting schedule or program. You have no idea what you're doing in the gym and you're just wandering around trying exercises you've seen on social media. You haven't had a movement screen from a physical therapist to determine what movements are safe and effective for you. You're working too hard or not hard enough. No one has taught you how to exercise to reverse your specific health condition that you're concerned about (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, etc.). You're not staying safe at the gym during cold and flu season. Evidence for Weightlifting Read more about the science and benefits of weightlifting here https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15831061/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22777332/ Weightlifting and Osteoporosis / Osteopenia If you've been diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis (or it runs in your family), weightlifting and a mineral-rich, vitamin-rich diet are the best medicines for you. Before you try bisphosphonates, PLEASE, please, give me or Dr. Kresge a call. There is evidence (links above) that you can reverse osteoporosis with lifting and diet alone. Bisphosphonates have serious risks, and you owe it to yourself to try natural options before using them. These natural options work.
