The Root Cause Medicine Podcast is a weekly one-on-one conversation with renowned medical experts, specialists, and pioneers who are influencing the way we look at our health and wellbeing. This week we're joined by Nicole Jardim, a Certified Women's Health Coach. In this episode, Nicole Jardim joins Dr. Carrie Jones to share how to fix your periods and balance your hormones naturally. Nicole is a Certified Women's Health Coach, writer, speaker, mentor, and creator of the Fix Your Period program. She is the author of Fix Your Period: 6 Weeks to Banish Bloating, Conquer Cramps, Manage Moodiness, and Ignite Lasting Hormone Balance, and the co-author of The Happy Balance, a recipe book filled with over eighty hormone-balancing recipes. Nicole is also the host of The Period Party podcast and has been called on as a women's health expert for sites such as The Guardian, Well+Good, and Healthline. Key Takeaways: What does a normal period look like? Nicole highlights that a true period is always preceded by ovulation. If you don't ovulate in a particular cycle, then you're basically experiencing what is known as an anovulatory cycle or hormone withdrawal bleeding. Normal periods should last between three and seven days long. If they're over seven days, you might experience estrogen and progesterone issues. Painful cramps during the period are another sign of an unhealthy or abnormal period. What is a normal period flow? A range of sixty milliliters is considered ideal for the entire period. Over eighty milliliters is a heavy period, and under twenty-five is a very light period. The normal period range is somewhere between thirty and fifty milliliters. Heavy versus light periods Heavy periods are often caused by a reproductive hormone imbalance, insulin resistance, ovarian dysfunction, or other hormone-related condition. An excessively light period usually indicates a lack of estrogen, nutrients, ovulation, or thyroid issues. What is PMS? Premenstrual syndrome, or PMS, ranges from physical like bloating, crampiness, heaviness, headaches, migraines, and body aches, to mental and emotional symptoms, like being quick to anger, impatient, frustrated, or anxious. Though some of these symptoms are normal, many are driven by inflammation, detoxification problems, blood sugar issues, and lifestyle. What is PMDD? Premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD, is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which causes a range of emotional, mental, and physical symptoms, and somewhere between two and eight percent of women worldwide experience it. “Instead of looking at each person's bio-individuality, we're all treated with one protocol.” When we slap a band-aid solution like the pill on PCOS, irregular periods, acne, and PMS, the women behind the symptoms are left disempowered and without a real solution. That's what today's guest, Nicole Jardim, is passionate about changing. Through her work as a Certified Women's Health Coach, educator, author, and more, Nicole has impacted the lives of tens of thousands of people worldwide by addressing the root cause of what's going on in their bodies and minds rather than just treating their symptoms. In this episode, Nicole and I talk about the glaring issues in how the medical system has treated women, how we can shift the stigma and shame around periods, her passion for educating women about their bodies, the rift between the traditional medical community and health coaches, and more. Nicole is a wealth of information, and I highly recommend checking out her book, Fix Your Period, and connecting with her on Instagram. She's a lovely person, and I know you'll love this episode. The cervical mucus test is keeping track of how your cervical mucus varies throughout your menstrual cycle. This week on the Curious women podcast, we are having an amazing guest who is the CEO of KEGG; a medical-grade fertility device that gives you personalized fertility tracking through the cervical fluid. Kristina joins us today to dive into the KEGG device and how it helps women to have a close eye on being fertile and other concerns regarding cervical mucus. Kristina was a person who travels a lot. Due to the stress and traveling, her cycle was not regular, and found out tracking vaginal fluid might help but there was no device to do that. She completed her training on the Creighton Model and the Sympto-Thermal Method of fertility awareness and after some time identified that those methods are not easy to learn. She spent 7+ years working on eBay and Amazon and decided to create KEGG. Kristina currently lives in San Francisco, California, the United States with her husband. In this episode we cover, [08.49] Background - Starting the conversation, Kristina dives into her story, how she got into the field and how KEGG started. [19.39] The device – Kristina shares KEGG helps you to get the data of your vagina without going to a doctor. [21.17] Being empowered – Kristina dives into what the device can currently offer for any woman who uses it like, the possibility of having infections, PCOS, conceiving, and more before going to the doctor. [23.36] Tracking – Kristina dives into the methods by which women can track cervical fluid and how difficult it is to track it for women who have irregular periods. [32.21] Birth control – We dive into how women are used to getting birth control which doesn't fix problems because it only conceals the problem. [35.26] What is KEGG – Kristina dives into what KEGG is, how it works, what benefits women can get from it, and how it served women including herself. [41.27] Pelvic floor – Pelvic floor holds the weight of everything when you are pregnant. Kristina shares how women get problems in the pelvic floor after childbirth and how to avoid that. [46.09] Manual cervix fluid tracking – Kristina shares how to both track manual cervix fluid and KEGG tracking and how it helps fertilization. [56.09] Processing with knowledge - Kristina dives into how women should know about things like egg quality, and timing to conceive because most women get frustrated after the first four months due to the lack of knowledge. I first took note of Nicole from her feature in the documentary "The Business of Birth Control". She is the author of the book "Fix Your Period", which now proudly sits on my shelf. Nicole is regularly harangued by OBGYNs on social media for spreading 'misinformation' about menstrual cycles, but Nicole's message is simple: bleeding induced by hormonal contraception is not the same as a bleed from your natural cycle. And she's right. Her work goes deep on how to remedy any issues that arise without the menstrual cycle, and she is an advocate and educator on fertility awareness methods. In short, Nicole is a gift to the women's health community. [00:09:00] - Nicole is regularly called out by OBGYNs for “misinforming” women that ovulatory bleeding is different from bleeding while on hormonal contraception (they're wrong; she's right...and that's not merely my opinion. It's basic physiology) [00:13:30] - Why is menstruation important? [00:20:45] - An overview of the menstrúal cycle (ovulation is the star of the cycle; not menstruation) [00:26:45] - What do estrogen and progesterone do in the body? [00:31:00] - Fixing your period (your “5th vital sign”) through lifestyle [00:37:30] - Fertility awareness methods [00:47:00] - What do different colors of menstrual blood mean? [00:54:00] - The adrenals and fertility [00:57:00] - Changes to cervical mucus [01:00:30] - Additional fertility considerations (preventing and achieving pregnancy) [01:03:45] - The man's responsibility in preventing pregnancy Links from the show: Nicole's website and Instagram Buy her book: Fix Your Period Nicole's podcast, "Period Party" My online store (discounts on many other products mentioned in my podcast) Find me on Instagram @nathanrileyobgyn and my practice at: www.BelovedHolistics.com Sponsored by: FullWell Fertility - Use code BELOVED10 for 10% off the best prenatal vitamin on the market (and check out their vitality and nerve support tonic!) This week's episode of Food, Freedom and Fertility is all about your menstrual cycle! Since we are talking about the menstrual cycle we thought the best guest for that is Nicole Jardim Nicole is a Certified Women's Health Coach, writer, speaker, mentor, and the creator of Fix Your Period, a series of programs that empower women and menstruators to reclaim their hormone health using a method that combines evidence-based information with simplicity and sass. Nicole and Sophia chat about a few key topics regarding your period and what it should or shouldn't look like. One of the big things to look out for are signs from your body that could mean something. What could your period be telling you that you need to know for your fertility? Your period plays such an important role that recently, your menstrual cycle has been officially considered a vital sign. Most women are always thinking about having a regular period which is important but another important regularity to consider is your ovulation. This episode Nicole and Sophia give some big tips on what regular periods and ovulation looks like. Nicole shares some red flags to watch for in regards to your cycle and one of those is period pain which has been normalized by the media for many years. If your period pain is disrupting your life, it is problematic and you should dig deeper. Normal period pain would look like day before or day of, mild to moderate pain where minimal intervention such as a hot water bottle will take care of the discomfort. The premenstrual phase is a good place to also take notice in what your body is trying to tell you. Spotting before your period is a sign that something could be going on. The good news is that sometimes it is not complicated to fix. Just remember to pay attention to your body and advocate for yourself. If you feel like something is not right because of one symptom or multiple, don't waste time, take immediate action. This episode is full of helpful and important information to help women determine what a ‘normal' period should look like including topics such as period color, volume, pain, and duration. If after listening to this episode you still need guidance with your cycle please feel free to check out Nicole's websites and other valuable resources in the link below. Between writing Fix Your Period, putting it out into the world, moving twice, and months spent as a nomad after the pandemic nixed our plans to move back to NYC in March of 2020, the past couple of years have been immensely stressful for me. I feel like I'm only now emerging from the burnout of this past year. In the midst of all that, I hadn't been to see an OBGYN for almost three years and after doing some test kits with Let's Get Checked, the results showed that my FSH and LH were high. Cue panic! In the hopes of getting further hormone testing, I did the homework I'd been putting off and found a midwife nearby with good reviews. Unfortunately, the visit did not go as I'd hoped. In this episode, we talk about the impact of stress on your hormones, why I was concerned about my hormone levels, how to find a practitioner you can trust, the shocking conversation I had with a midwife about hormone testing, why self-advocacy is crucial, and so much more! To learn more about hormone testing, visit https://nicolejardim.com/podcasts/why-hormone-testing-is-a-very-important-tool-for-monitoring-your-health.

In this episode of Happily Holistic, Amy speaks with Nicole Jardim. Nicole is a women's health coach and author of Fix Your Period, a book talking about women's relationship with their periods and how we can fix the stigma surrounding period talk. Growing up, Nicole did not expect her profession to surround women's menstrual cycles. The journey of education began with her own struggles. During her period, she would experience cramps and other issues that caused her an extreme amount of pain. Eventually, she turned to medical assistance and ended up on a birth control pill. Like many women around the U.S. she took the pill, but unknowingly ended up with many side effects; side effects that were slowly destroying her health. No doctor was able to point out what had gone wrong. It was not until she took a trip to the acupuncturist that she found her answer: The Pill. She began changing her life and slowly became an advocate for women's health. Together, Amy and Nicole break down the chemical changes in women's bodies throughout the cycle. Amy shares her experience with period irregularities and Nicole tries to pinpoint a few changes that could have caused them. They talk about common issues and how to find the right solutions. Nicole covers hormonal imbalance, how to spot the symptoms, and about bleeding disorders. With the lack of available information about periods, diseases related to them often get shadowed, leaving thousands of women struggling. She encourages every person experiencing a cycle to get tested for them. Listen along to learn how changing everyday tasks and stress levels can change your own cycle. Hey loves! [Today’s episode is 14+ recommended as we unpack some stuff about sex that’s more for older teens.] I went on the birth control pill when I was 15 or 16 (honestly I don’t remember, I should probably text my mom -- she’ll remember) -- and I felt super empowered and kinda feminist and mostly coooooool. I -- real talk -- wanted people to see me not so subtly taking my pill pack out of my bag to take it every time my daily alarm went off. ;) Fast forward to now and I know so much more about the pill that NO ONE TOLD ME (even and especially my pretty cool doctor(s) at the time!!). I’m talking… negative side effects we brush off, long term potential impacts of not ovulating for years, and why going on the pill so early can MESS YOU UP. I asked Nicole Jardim, author of Fix Your Period and the “Period Girl”, to come hang with me today and give us the full story about the pill. Come listen, and share this one with someone who needs it! Xoxox, Eliza P.S. The Badass Academy Membership is opening in March! Get on the waitlist: badassgirls.me/academy P.P.S.
