I recently joined Dr. Susan Fox on her podcast to challenge damaging fertility myths and share insights from my 15+ years as a Naturopathic Endocrinologist. We discussed everything from the false "fertility cliff" at 35 to the overlooked male factors in conception and pregnancy loss. As the creator of the Restorative Fertility Method and host of the Egg Meets Sperm Podcast, I was thrilled to share evidence-based perspectives that empower couples on their fertility journey.Key Topics We ExploredThe Fertility Age MythI debunked the pervasive myth that fertility dramatically declines after 35—a belief with surprisingly non-scientific origins. The truth is that fertility decline is gradual, not a cliff, and biological age (influenced by lifestyle factors) matters far more than chronological age. This shift in perspective is crucial for women who feel pressured by their "biological clock."Male Fertility's Critical RoleOne of my passions is highlighting how male factors contribute to approximately 50% of infertility cases and are significantly linked to recurrent pregnancy loss. I challenged the patriarchal notion that male fertility remains robust indefinitely and discussed specific markers that are rarely tested but critically important:Sperm DNA fragmentationHomocysteine levelsHemoglobin A1CThese factors can dramatically affect pregnancy viability even when standard semen analyses appear normal.Root Causes of Fertility ChallengesWe explored the multifaceted root causes of fertility issues, including:Gut health and microbiome balanceHormone regulationLiver functionConditions like PCOS and endometriosisI emphasized that addressing these foundational health factors can significantly improve natural conception rates and IVF success.Practical Tips for Male PartnersI shared actionable advice for men to optimize their fertility:Avoid fragrances and products containing phthalatesConsume diverse vegetables for micronutrientsMinimize EMF exposure (keep phones/laptops away from the groin)Prioritize sleep and maintain healthy circadian rhythmsFertility as VitalityThroughout our conversation, I emphasized my core philosophy: fertility health is a reflection of overall vitality. The same factors that optimize reproductive function also enhance longevity, energy, and wellness throughout life.About the HostDr. Susan Fox has been helping women and couples overcome infertility and enjoy healthy pregnancies for more than 23 years. In this episode of Dr. C in the D, Dr. Carol Kowalczyk and Dr. Nicole Budrys dive into some of the most exciting advancements in the world of male fertility—shedding light on new testing options and lab techniques that are helping couples find answers and improve outcomes. With so many people turning to Facebook groups, online forums, and podcasts for fertility guidance, this conversation is all about clearing the air and explaining what's truly worth your time (and money) when navigating fertility treatments. From gene expression in sperm to cutting-edge lab tools, they unpack how these innovations support smarter, more personalized fertility care. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Sperm QT Test: A groundbreaking test that analyzes sperm gene expression to determine how well sperm can fertilize an egg. Ideal for: Unexplained infertility, long-standing TTC journeys, and deciding between IUI vs. IVF Key takeaway: A normal semen analysis doesn't always tell the whole story—Sperm QT can fast-track you to the treatment that's right for you. DFI (DNA Fragmentation Index): A test that measures DNA damage in sperm, which can impact embryo development and miscarriage risk. Often used in: Recurrent pregnancy loss evaluations Treatment options: Lifestyle changes, antioxidants, frequent ejaculation, or surgical evaluation for varicoceles. ZyMot for IVF: A lab technology that sorts and activates the healthiest sperm by mimicking the body's natural selection process. Why it matters: ZyMot has been linked to more and better-quality embryos, increasing chances of pregnancy while reducing the need for multiple IVF cycles. Why This Matters: Historically, fertility testing has focused heavily on women. But male factors can play just as crucial a role. These new tools give couples better answers, save time and money, and help create stronger embryos for today—and for future family planning. Whether you're at the beginning of your journey or have been trying for years, these tests offer clarity and direction for the path ahead. This week, is Donald Trump smarter than we think he is on foreign policy? Could he, as some say, be pulling a "Reverse-Nixon"? Our colleague George Pendle joins us with his insights. Then, Tesla used to be the car of choice for virtue-signaling Democrats. Now, as liberals all over the world unload what some are calling their "Swasticars," in anger at Elon Musk, our writer Simon Mills asks if MAGA loyalists will step in to help with the drop in sales. And finally, Linda Wells stops by with the latest news on all things health- and beauty-related, including a report on "Spermageddon" among men and what they can do to increase their odds of becoming fathers.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week's episode we're chatting about 3 different causes of low sperm count that supplements aren't going to fix. This is why digging down to the root cause to support your treatment plan is so important. So today we're highlighting the need for a comprehensive fertility work up and focusing on the root cause rather than the quick fixes (that may not even be helping!). You've tracked your cycle. You've cleaned up your diet. You've done the DUTCH test. You've optimized your hormones. And yet… still waiting on that positive pregnancy test? Let's talk about the OTHER 50% of the equation: HIM. I know, I know—male fertility doesn't get the same attention. But the reality? Men's bodies respond to change faster than women's, and the right shifts can have a massive impact on sperm health. The best part? It's usually not about adding more—it's about taking the right things away. So, where do we start? Here are the BIGGEST hidden culprits behind low male fertility: 1️⃣ Endocrine Disruptors That car air freshener? The heavily scented body spray? Those sneaky chemicals are tanking testosterone and sperm quality. One of my clients had her husband ditch the artificial fragrances, and just weeks later, she noticed a big difference (yes, in that way). 2️⃣ Toxic Food & Drinks Gas station snacks and energy drinks? They're loaded with chemicals that mess with hormones. A switch to cleaner options (plus more protein—think caveman-style eating!) can make a night-and-day difference. 3️⃣ Environmental Exposures If your partner works around chemicals, oils, or industrial materials, his skin is absorbing toxins daily. Protective gear is a must. One client's husband worked in a mechanic shop, changed a few key habits, and within weeks, their fertility outlook totally shifted. 4️⃣ The Gut-Hormone Connection A messed-up gut means messed-up hormones. I've seen parasites, Candida, H. pylori—things men brush off as “normal” bloating or stomach issues. If his gut isn't right, his hormones won't be either.

The conversation addresses the widespread claims about various supplements and emphasizes the necessity of consulting a doctor for any serious fertility concerns. Listeners will learn that while supplements can potentially enhance fertility, they should not be seen as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment for underlying issues. Dr. Natalie Crawford answers voicemail questions about male fertility. Questions included: I have been trying to get pregnant for 18 months, had a miscarriage, and am seeing a fertility specialist. My husband's sperm motility is 36% and morphology is 2%. The clinic says the numbers are minimally low and we can still try medicated cycles and IUI. I want feedback on whether we should stop the medicated cycles and focus on improving my husband's sperm first. I have two healthy children but have had two recent miscarriages. My husband's semen analysis shows normal count/volume but only 3% normal morphology. I want to know if the low morphology could be causing the miscarriages and if we would still have a good chance of conceiving naturally. My husband was treated for testicular cancer and we were able to bank his sperm. I am trying to decide whether to try IUI first or go straight to IVF given our limited sperm supply. My husband has 1% sperm morphology but all other parameters are normal. I am getting mixed advice - the urologist thinks we can conceive naturally, but the RE recommends IUI. I want to understand more about the importance of morphology. Want to receive my weekly newsletter?
