A pod about wine amongst other things by Fergus Elias (The Maker) and Lee Isaacs (The Merchant)
Well dear listener, you enjoyed last week's episode with Oneka John so much, we've asked her back for a Part II. This week we uncover the challenges and potential pitfalls of importing wine into Barbados. While there are some things more unique to this beautiful island, we uncover some universal truths about forecasting, cash flow, and the perennial Ops vs. Sales. We also raise the question once again as to whether wine is an FMCG product (bet you can't guess what we think). From there we consider the community surrounding wine and how to make it more accessible and inviting. Oneka talks about her Perfectly Paired events and how she uses her immense market and product knowledge to invite, excite, and engage a wide variety of consumers in the burgeoning wine scene. We look at how WSET works in the classroom setting and how it can be amended and utilised in the more consumer focused arenas. Just what is quality and how can we encourage drinkers into the discussion. There's a lot here that will resonate and shows how the challenges and opportunities echo across the trade globally. Once again, with enormous thanks to our wonderful guest Oneka for finding the time to talk to Lee, and apologies that Ferg wasn't on hand to do a proper job. TM&TM: Perfectly Paired Sandying your Lane from Thursday morning. @onekajohn @vignobleswineconsultancy @fergelias #podcast #wine #winecast #Barbados #import #distribution.
Where is Ferg? Is he over there? Maybe he's over here? What we can say is he's nowhere to be found on this episode. Travelling for work or some noise. Given that the general approach of TM&TM is to record 2 friends talking, we have continued in that vein as Lee talks to one of his closest friends (we are amazed to learn he has them too), the wonderful Oneka John. Oneka John is a wine educator and communicator living and working in Barbados. We learn how Oneka started on her wine journey, and how she had the misfortune of running into the lesser of our 2 hosts. From there we explore the culture surrounding wine consumption in Barbados and examine the macro and micro trends and how they do (or indeed do not) reflect the larger global feel of wine consumption. There's talk of history, migration, and the way wine captures a huge amount of social, religious, and geographical changes. Oneka discuss the differences in wines to be found in local rum shacks all the way up to prestigious hotel and restaurant settings, with great insight from her time 'Selling down the trade' and extensive HORECA experience. We touch on consumer attitudes and potential opportunities (before we dive into this in more detail in our follow up episode) Having no Ferg is rough on the pod, and we couldn't trust it with Lee, but we think you'll agree that Oneka is a fabulous guest. We knew you wouldn't be happy with only 1 episode dedicated to and filled with the lustrous rich tones of Christian Helsvig A.K.A. Our Man In Norway. Not wanting to lose out on that rich timbre and deep knowledge, we flew Ferg back out to @vin_oslo (with huge thanks to them once again for hosting) to continue the conversation from last week. Having touched on the inner and outer workings of the Norwegian Monopoly and interrogating some sales data, in this episode we find ways of asking similar questions in multiple ways. There's a strong cultural focus this time as we look at seasonal trends, Buckfast (still not sure why to be honest) and a truly amazing sales statistic. We also finally bring back our favourite patented TM&TM game in the form of [guest name][affirmative][guest name][negative]. As we cast an eye to the future of wine consumption in Norway Christian shares a piece of thought and insight that is perhaps the most profound thing ever uttered on this podcast and that has wide reaching implications for us all. Ferg and Christian also finally get something to eat; tune in to find out what's on the menu.
We've heard Ferg talk about Norway, wine in Norway, trips to Norway, and brown cheese but can we really take him at his word? Is all this just the romanticism of drinking Balfour Brut Rosé whilst pining for the fjords? TM&TM Senior Leadership made the groundbreaking decision that Ferg should return to this magnificent country but gain insight and intel from a real man on the inside. Dear listener, we are delighted to introduce to you the mighty, the majestic, the outrageously handsome Christian Helsvig. Wine importer extraordinaire; Christian doesn't just set pulses racing, he's not just got his finger on the pulse of the Norwegian wine scene...he IS the pulse. We uncover the hows wheres and why of Christian's relationship with wine and starting his business. From here we engage in a perilous quest to understand the nuances, challenges, successes, and trends of wine in Norway. What works and what's hot? Where are the opportunities and just why do the Norwegians love English wine so much? This is an episode packed more tightly than a coiled sponge but fear not...there's a sequel in post-production. With huge thanks to @vino-oslo the fabulous wine bar for hosting Christian and Ferg during the recording and for keeping them well fed and watered. Lee remained in the hovel that is TM&TM Towers. TM&TM: Monopoloy Monopoly Wine Monopoly Properly sailing into the inlet on Thursday morning.
What came first: wine or existence itself? The answer might surprise you. But after tackling such a huge subject in our intro Ferg & Lee head into the mysterious world of Low & No. What exactly are these beverages and who is drinking them. Importantly, why are they drinking them and does the quality measure up? We consider where these products sit now against where they were, and just where they might be going. Are you a Low & No drinker? What are your favourites? Following this we somehow veer off into the world of beer, faults, and just how much Lee's standup is actually worth. Alongside the revelation that Ferg has a new Pinot we then consider wines, regions, and countries that may not be considered 'mainstream' but are nonetheless gaining some consumer attention. Where should we be looking for 'the next big thing'? Finally we touch on the concept of natural and minimal intervention. Covering the whos the whys and thewhats Ferg & Lee look for some definitions and conclusions.
Just what is an expert? Are you an expert? Do you know an expert? What about being a lieutenant (junior grade) of commerce? Ferg opens by telling us about his new moniker before we dive into the shocking news of declining Champagne sales. Who is not drinking Champagne? Why not? And just what are they drinking instead? We explore this piece of news with the rigorous investigative standards you would expect from TM&TM and attempt to understand the changing face of sparkling wine consumption in the UK. Where are the opportunities for non-Champagne fizz and what do they need to do to further engage and excite the drinker? TM&TM: Captain of Industry being fermented in bottle from Thursday morning.
What two things are aesthetically perfect in this world? Is one of them a vineyard in spring? As sure as spring follows winter there is an array of work to be completed in those vineyards and who better to guide us through this work than Supreme Head Chief Director of Wine, Winemaking, & News Generation, our very own Fergus Elias. In an unexpectedly corporate shift, he guides us through a SWOT analysis of an English vineyard in spring. Just what are the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats that need to be considered? Have we mistimed our recording and release dates for this episode? How would things look if we had a whale's eye view? And just what do we need to think about when it comes to shoot thinning, spray timing, and labour efficiency? We include famous Bristolians, groundhog like prognostications, and learn just how exactly Lee convinced Jancis to publish something he'd written. This is more than just an allegory with a cork, this IS a 360 overhead real time big picture view of an English vineyard in Spring.
Logic, logic, logic...is the beginning of wisdom, not the end. But where does logic belong in a tasting note? If it belongs at all? Can something so abstract be articulated accurately? Can we construct a universally understood framework in the face of an uncaring, entropic, and non-objective reality? What is the very fabric of this thing of which we speak so freely and just who is it for? Yes...it's one of 'those' episodes dear listener. We delve into the concept of tasting notes and attempt to explore how they're constructed and what we hope to achieve in the process. Alongside this Lee finally defines his name and we learn exactly* where you can procure the fruits of Ferg's labours. We learn more about how Ferg proposed to his beloved fiancée (and soon to be wife: EXCITED!) and Ferg answers one of Lee's longest held questions: What IS a boysenberry? We explore also the perils of talking to the public, the power of hydrogen, reducing sugars, and ethanol as well as asking what YOU in the trade want from wine comms...and conversely what YOU the consumer would find helpful? All this and more in TM&TM: Heisenberg's Uncertain Tasting Note - quantumly entangled in a Hadron collision from Thursday morning. *well, maybe not 'exactly'
Grapes: the final frontier. These are the recordings of The Maker & The Merchant. Their continuing mission: to explore strange new wines; to seek out new puns and new levels of humour; to boldly go where no pod has gone before! That's right. Ferg hasn't just attended the Next Gen Fruit Conference, he IS the Next Gen fruit conference. Wearing his finest starfleet dress uniform, Ferg gave a talk on growing grapes in the UK to some of the finest agricultural minds in the industry. But just what is The Next Gen Fruit Group? What is its Prime Directive, and can they redirect all power to forward shields? Joking aside we learn from Ferg about the differences in knowledge, understanding, and potentially foresight between UK fruit growers and grape growers. What are his key takeaways? Where can grape growers learn from those who grow top fruit and soft fruit (and, err, what is the difference between those two things?) As well as this we take a quick look at the large news of Majestic purchasing Enotria & Coe and what this may or may not mean for the trade and the UK wine consumer. There's also something about Ferg causing trouble in the middle east. TM&TM: A Critical Mass Of Talent available to beam down to the planet's surface from stardate 030425.
Do you like numbers? How about addition, multiplication, and addition? Do you have a keen interest in English wine of the economics of wine production? Are you interested in starting your own vineyard or winery? Then have we got an episode for you. In this mathematically heavy yet vital episode, Ferg guides Lee through the numbers and sums behind a bottle of English wine. Yes, there are the usual tangents, efforts at humour, and tenuous links, but at the heart of this episode beats a strong desire to unpick the real numbers and analyse just how the whole thing works. Ferg drops the numbers, Lee does the sums, and we end up a real-time breakdown of costs, a metaphysical discussion on the concept of labour, and a final number at how much you'll need to start you own winery. So strap in, put your accountant on speed dial, and prepare your abacus for TM&TM 1234. Available down the back of the sofa from Thursday morning.
Last week we teased Lee talking about some TV thing he's wangled his way into. This being Lee he does talk about it, but he talks about a load of other stuff first. That's right, this is a long haul. Firstly, Lee finally gets round to talking about Kingsbarn's Coaltown whisky, that he was kindly sent some time ago. Lee talks about his love and history with whisky and guides us through what sounds like a fabulous single malt. Lowland whisky, matured in ex-peated casks, and with more aromas and flavours than you can shake a quaich at. With sincere thanks to Charles Wilson and the Wemyss Family for this gifted bottle. We'll share shortly some advice on where and how to procure yourself a bottle or 3. Ferg fills us in on his busy schedule from sushi pairing and G-splitting to bottling and being buttered up, he continues to live at unimagineable speed. We ask all our listener to keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't wear himself out before his stag do. Wedding, we mean wedding. That's obviously more important. Lee goes on (which is a complete sentence in itself) to explore a webinar he cohosted for his day job with the WSET and describes a little more about his day to day work. Then there's some noise about how he's an Oxford lecturer and then, the big reveal, which we revealed last week, that he is involved in a fabulous new wine TV concept. Just what is Incogvino? Who is in it? How can you find out more? Well, you can start by listening in here. So sit down, tune in, and pour a large dram for the podcast with a stellar cast...available next to the Soylent Green in Aisle 5 from Thursday morning...
The first thing we need to say about this week's episode is that it follows straight on from last week's. Which sounds obvious now we've written it down. But it does follow on, as in, we didn't bother to record even the shortest, sweetest intro to remind you what happened last week. So, if you didn't listen to last week there will be loads of gags, callbacks, and references and you'll miss out. But we've warned you now so it's on you. We continue our English wine introspective and ask not what can English wine do for you, but what can you do for English wine? How can we continue to grow, and what exactly is the role of the off-trade and how can we work together to build an unbeatable team of superheroe…English wine scene. We briefly cover Lee's hobbies which seem to now include attempts at topical humour, considering wine terminology, and telling Richard Harris stories. Which naturally leads us to Shakespeare, asking what links James Bond and Indiana Jones, and asking our dear listener a big question. While Lee solidifies his nerd credentials, Ferg gets creative, and we consider just who owns the rights to TM&TM and exactly who it is all for? Lee drops a bombshell about recording a PILOT (and explains why this should be in upper case). So, Season 4 continues [should we insert an adjective to suggest to presence of momentum and excitement?] with TM&TM: Iambic Pentameter. Available to podcast from your download place this Thursday morning
We know the disappointment. We feel your pain. The ennui…yes, we're back. And your worst fears have been realised: Lee has returned with us. For the one of you that missed Ferg's witty and insightful commentary, and Lee's…whatever, you can rejoice. TM&TM is back and being piped into your earboxes through the medium of sound. In our first episode back after a lengthy mid-season break Lee extolls the virtue of snooker (yes, it really does get off to a rocky start). Ferg takes us ‘under the hood' of English wine. We're not sure how that works or why he's practicing to be an American. We move seamlessly from cats to duty rates and why they're a brilliant thing and the best decision any government has ever made. If you've ever wondered what influencers and dolphins have in common, this is the show for you as we also ask ‘when is a middleman not a middleman' TM&TM: What A **** Shambles… available to lodpod from your castloads this Thursday morning. We're back.
We know, we know—this episode is a bit late! With Lee off on a well-deserved summer holiday, Ferg took over the editing duties, which somehow turned into a 10-day epic. But, as they say, good things come to those who wait! In this season finale, Ferg and Jack take the reins for the second part of our deep dive into the history of wine. From the Romans' questionable attempts to cultivate vineyards in chilly Britain to the Dark Ages, where viticulture all but vanished, our dynamic duo explores how wine managed to survive and thrive in England against all odds. They dive into the role of monasteries in keeping the wine flowing through medieval times and how the love for a good glass of vino persisted despite plagues and freezing temperatures. But it's not all serious history! Expect plenty of laughs as Ferg and Jack debate the Romans' wine-making skills and share how English wine made its comeback post-war. As they wrap up this two-part special—and the series—you'll find out why the story of wine in England is as much about resilience as it is about taste. So, grab a glass and join us for one last toast before we cork it up for a well-earned break. Cheers!
The end is nigh, after 7 months and 42 episodes season 3 of The Maker and The Merchant is finally coming to a conclusion. Fear not however as we have two more episodes to share with you as we bring this season to a close prior to our summer break. Unfortunately Lee misread the communication from TM&TM hr and has already started his summer hols. Fortunately Ferg was joined by the inimitable Jack Merrylees, Marketing director at Balfour Winery and general history buff. This week Ferg and Jack desperately try to get from the first grape vine to "hommo Winemaker" the evolutionary state human attain prior to ascension. Expect random interludes when the chickpea curry arrives, a very loud cough Ferg wasn't able "to fix in post" and the regular inclusion of a rather loud German Shepherd. It's a fascinating episode leaving you, dear listener on a knife edge to hear more. TM&TM Grubby Hole Diggers get it ere now
DEMOCRACY! We love it. Especially when it goes our way…and involves wine. But do democracy and wine meet anywhere? Sure, the Greeks drank plenty of wine and invented the concept, but what about today? Where are the winemaking heroes prepared to put big decisions back in our hands? Wait…should we leave non-experts to make such large and groundbreaking decisions? One man who has proved democracy is alive and well, and can be found in the wonderful world of wine is Alex Brogan (not an IWSC 30 Under 30 Winner as some mistakenly think) founder of The Not Yet Named Wine Company. Avid listener of the show will have heard not only his name before, but also the man himself; he appeared as a special guest on our well thought out live episode at The Sampler way back when. In today's episode Lee (Ferg's got a problem with his gravity and is still floating around the winery) talks to Alex about the origin of The Not Yet Named Wine Co, the first (discounting a one off American project over a decade ago) the bring democratic principles to the wine drinking masses. From concept to first vintage, we explore how the concept has progressed and understand more about the kind of options the community are able to make and influence. TNYNWC is more than just the wine though, with discussions and votes involving names, labelling, and many other things too. Also, the community involved have access to special events and Dictator Wines. Talking of events, there is still time for you to join an Arrival Party this Saturday 27th July…hit the social medias of TNYNWC website to join the fun. Beyond this we focus on the impending vintage 5, which will see Alex travel to Slovenia to carry out the demands of his faithful followers…and there is still time for you to join the action. As well as this, Alex shares stories of how the project is connecting people across continents, school trips, and an incident with a pig. With huge thanks to Alex for his time and sharing his fabulous story; we're huge fans of this business and think you will be too. Welcome back dear listener. You can't help yourself can you? Following the ENORMOUS success of our English Wine Week series, Ferg & Lee review the week itself. From the big news of the week, to the announcement of the Wine GB awards, we name our favourites and highlight once again the exciting world of English Wine. Lee then raises of the question of just where to have a good wining and dining experience in Oxford. The city may be a seat of culture and learning, and be home to many great wine merchants, but where in town can you go for a great evening of Michelin recommended food and wine pairing? Lee it seems has the answer. He recently attended just such an event at Summertown's Pompette Restaurant. Under the expert guidance and tutelage of Suzy Nemeth, Lee traveled the world of the Loire with wines that were both excellent, and not necessarily obvious. Not only that, it was a culinary trip of excellence. Prepare to be regaled with tales of superb wines, excellent food, and a wonderful evening. Just think about how much it would have been if he wasn't there! Check out Pompette's website for details of future events and get yourself along if you're in the area. We send our thanks to everyone at Pompetter not only for giving Lee a wonderful evening, but also giving us a night off. So sit back, strap in, and enjoy HAVE YOU BEEN TO A WINE DINNER? In this week's emergency episode, Fergus delves into the latest industry statistics released by Wine GB, accompanied by the wonderful Phoebe French, communications manager at Wine GB. Unfortunately, Lee couldn't join the podcast this week as he found himself unexpectedly detained by Sussex Police on suspicion of attempting to “float a winery out to sea.” While this peculiar incident has temporarily sidelined Lee, rest assured he'll be back with us next week to share his unique perspectives. Seizing this unexpected opportunity, Fergus decided to record from his parked car in an industrial estate. Consequently, the sound quality on his end is less than optimal. We apologise for this inconvenience and kindly ask you to bear with this episode, dear listener. Despite the audio hiccups. Phoebe's contributions are crystal clear, providing genuinely important and relevant information about the state of the fastest-growing agricultural sector in the United Kingdom. Phoebe discusses the significant growth the industry has seen recently, the challenges it faces, and the exciting developments on the horizon. From advancements in viticulture to the impact of climate change, this episode covers a broad spectrum of topics that are essential for anyone interested in the UK's burgeoning wine sector. There are many challenges ahead, but also much to be positive about, making this a truly enlightening episode. So, tune in and enjoy this informative discussion, and stay tuned for Lee's return next week.
1,000 downloads in a month. IN A SINGLE MONTH! No, we're not harvesting stats from some Russian bot farm, these are all from you. Our dear Listener. How can we say thank you? We, we thought we'd say thank you by continuing to record our absolute nonsense. This week opens with thoughts about the new snooker season and crying in the streets. However, we quickly get into things as Ferg shares many details about his recent 'study' trip to Alsace. From the impact of climate change to discovering Syrah (yeah, nice one Ferg, it's been around a while) via a discussion about the roles and responsibilities of governing bodies, Ferg lays it all bare. And we do mean all. Thankfully Lee has edited the images out of the podcast and you remain mentally-scar free. Just what are producers in Alsace doing to mitigate, pre-empt, and survive climate change? Are they growing the most suitable varieties? How are wine styles changing? Just what is this Temple Of Ego he describes? As if this wasn't enough, Lee tells us about his impending wine dinner for Flavours of Spain (remember: he's their ambassador) at l'Oculto SE4 on Thursday 11th July. Apparently he's going to talk about the joys of Valencia and will share bottles that bubbles, whites that intrigue, reds that uplift, and sweeties and soothe. Or something like that. There may still be a few tickets remaining to head to @locultose4's website via this link and get yourself booked in. It's a shame someone has to go last in these mini series. But, we have saved a big hitter and one of our favourites for you.In today's concluding episode we talk to Marie Davies of Stopham fame. Synonymous with this excellent producer, you may think that Marie has been there from the start. Marie talks us through her journey into wine and the industry, and how she became so innately connected and vital to Stopham (and English wine generally) Then by exploring the story of Stopham, and their approach to the vineyard and wine, we cover topics such as sustainabilityand wider communication with existing and potential English wine consumers. Again, a lot of ground is covered today, but Marie has agreed (as if there was a choice) to come back on in future and dig into the subjects in greater detail. Stopham are distributed in the UK by Liberty, and as mentioned in the episode you can find their wines in @majesticwine @hawkinsbros @grape_britannia and @butlerswinecellar amongst others. For today's English Wine Week episode we head to Berkshire, to a place that is only 45 minutes from Paddington station. Who would have thought there would be vineyards so close to London? We have a world of vinous riches on our doorsteps in the UK and today we talk to the wonderful Mark Darley, the man behind All Angels Vineyard. Trading a life in the city and a ‘commute next to someone's armpit' for ‘a 3 minute walk with 3 labradors' seems like a pretty good deal to us, and this is exactly what Mark did when he went into his vines full time. All Angels have won multiple awards for their vintage sparkling wines. It's no wonder are these are communicative and delicate wines that offer tremendous value. Mark talks about how it all started and shares his thoughts on getting (and keeping) consumers engaged and enthused with the subject of English wine. From corporate events to dosage trials, there is a lot more happening at All Angels than just grape growing. Well worth the 45 minute journey from Paddington (or more minutes from further afield) and definitely worth 25 minutes of your time today, give this a listen as we continue to celebrate English Wine Week. @nicolabateswinegb @winegb @allangelsvineyard @bottleopenerltd #Englishwineweek #Englishwine #DrinkEnglish #EWW #ESW #EnglishSparklingWine @fergelias @wineman147
As we hurtle towards the end of English Wine Week there is still plenty of time for everyone to get involved. With the weekend around the corner surely it's time for a glass of something English. But do you stop to consider the world behind the glass? When were these grapes planted? Who is working them and what are the challenges? Just what would drive someone to undertake such a challenge? Today we talk to the joyful and joyous Phil Harris from Natalia Harris. Phil's journey began as a natural successor to Indiana Jones, but thankfully he chose to leave archaeology and join the wine industry instead. From experiences at Davenport and Domaine Humbrecht, Phil and his wife Natalia planted a vineyard near Hastings. We talk cultivation, organics and sustainability, and include feedback their wines have received from notable names Jancis Robinson MW and Henry Jeffreys (amongst others). This is a fun and uplifting 20 minutes in the presence of one of English wine's great personalities. @nicolabateswinegb @winegb @nataliaharriswine @jancisrobinson @henrygjeffreys #Englishwineweek #Englishwine #DrinkEnglish #EWW #ESW #EnglishSparklingWine @fergelias @wineman147
What's cooler than being cool? Being an awesome English wine grower making something unique, exciting, and boundary pushing. Or as Andre 3000 summed it up…'ice cold'. Charlie quoted Gareth Maxwell when he told me “B*ll*cks, what can go wrong?”. Charlie takes us on a wonderful journey through the incredible history of this piece of land – a history that involves Henry VIII, the Canadian Royal Air Force, Peter Dominic…and even AC/DC (just about). Anyone else got that in their English wine armoury? We think not. Coolhurst produce the Triple Vs: all their wines are single variety, single vineyard, and single vintage. A bold move in a marginal climate where there is nowhere to hide. But hiding isn't necessary, the Coolhurst wines comes highly rated (especially by Lee who knows them reasonably well) So settle in for a fabulous episode in which Charlie reveals all about Coolhurst and we all cover some thoughts on vintage variation and wine comms. @nicolabateswinegb @winegb @coolhurstvineyards #Englishwineweek #Englishwine #DrinkEnglish #EWW #ESW #EnglishSparklingWine @fergelias @wineman147
So far this week we've talked to chief executives, makers, marketers, and retailers…we now turn our attentions to competitors. Or rather, competition organisers. For the last 8 years the Independent English Wine Awards (IEWA) has flown the flag for this growing industry, and its many varied and dynamic producers. Lee himself holds the privilege of having judged, and served as a panel chair, and multiple occasions but this time, we get the down low, the intel, the facts from the founder of this competition. Alex Taylor had his interest in wine competitions piqued by studying WSET. He was furious when first introduced to English wine…that it hadn't been brought to his attention earlier. Thus started a journey into starting a competition that would help raise the profile of producers and the whole category. Alex explains his ethos, how the competition works, and mentions just a few of the many extremely talented judges and brilliant medal winners. It's a classic TM&TM slice of English wine action so strap in and enjoy. We also have a special visit from the Taylor clan. @nicolabateswinegb @winegb @tasetbristol @the.iewa @dnkrbywine @messy.massey @lymebaywine @jameslambertwine @theenglishwineman @hawkinsbros @waistcoatwines @pickledmimi @huxbear_vineyard @susyatkins @food_writer @liamsteevenson @langhamwinery @tuffonhallwine @windingwoodvineyard @burnvalleyvineyard @greatbritishwine #Englishwineweek #Englishwine #DrinkEnglish #EWW #ESW #EnglishSparklingWine @fergelias @wineman147
For several years now, Lee has talked about his heroes, specifically his wine heroes, more specifically his wine superheroes. There is an equivalent to the Bat Signal in this world of English wine, and it takes the form of Sarah Massey and Lyme Bay. We have been incredibly fortunate to grab a few minutes of Sarah's time and here we explore her journey into wine and how she has become not only a stellar winemaker, but a serious role model for young women in the industry. There is much more to this conversation and we hope to have Sarah back on soon for a full episode to explore her career, influences, and huge impact on the industry. This aside we learn about the ethos and direction of Lyme Bay, and how Sarah goes about expressing the multiple sites and high quality fruit grown in some of England's most premium and exciting sites. It's a jam packed episode and one we know has much more to cover. We press Sarah for her favourites in the Lyme Bay range and recommend seeking them out to enjoy this English Wine Week. @nicolabateswinegb @winegb @messy.massey @lymebaywine @jameslambertwine #Englishwineweek #Englishwine #DrinkEnglish #EWW #ESW #EnglishSparklingWine @fergelias @wineman147
It's all very well and good talking about the amazing producers, sites, and fruit England now has in its armoury. It's also fun talking about marketing and comms (hear yesterday's episode) but who is on the front lines? Who is going out into the real world of UK wine consumers and fighting the good fight to get as many great wines in front of them as possible? We have some great retailers of wine in the UK and in today's episode we spend some time chatting to the wonderful James Hawkins of Hawkins Bros, an English Wine Specialist retailer. It's here at the coal face that we can discover in real time what consumer think, want, and expect of English wine. Retailers perform a key task in being the link from vineyard and winery to actual drinker and James shares his insights and thoughts on where English wine sits in the mind of the modern consumer. Among events the Hawkins Bros are running this week you'll be able to try wines from @albourneestate @extonparkvineyard @greyfriarsvineyard @simpsonswine @candoverbrook @drink.folc @ambrielsparkling (which won't be the only time they're mentioned in this series!). James also talks about his discoveries through @the.iewa including @windingwoodvineyard and @poyningsgrangevineyard. Like any decent minded individual we bloody love Dan Kirby. A font of wisdom and knowledge, MW student, and Brand Ambassador for Flint Vineyards. We get straight into it by asking Dan to give us the intel on Flint but the conversation quickly moves into the realm of consumer attitudes, expectations, and how we can better build comms and engagement. With Dan's trademark insight and wit we look into where English wine is currently and examine the opportunities for growth. All of this weaves effortlessly around what Flint do, how they do it, and what makes them tick. There's a lot of great stuff here from both a producer and consumer perspective. So, settle in and prepare to be both soothed and enlightened by the gentle tones of one of English wine's great figures. @nicolabateswinegb @winegb @dnkrbywine @flintvineyard #Englishwineweek #Englishwine #DrinkEnglish #EWW #ESW #EnglishSparklingWine @fergelias @wineman147
Who better to talk to at the beginning of English Wine Week than Nicola Bates? The Chief Executive of WineGB very kindly found time in her ridiculously busy schedule to talk to us. Nicola talks us through the vital work of WineGB and explains the many different complex areas in which this organisation works. We assess the impact on plans of the sudden election campaign and discuss how to move forward during these turbulent times. Nicola also explains the key areas of focus for WineGB and its members, before we go all JFK and ask not what WineGB can do for us, but what can we do for WineGB. Finally, we ask Nicola to highlight some important events and activity to look for during this English Wine Week. There's a lot of ground covered for such a short episode and we hope to entice Nicola back for a more indepth chat in future. Until then, enjoy this great primer to English wine and English Wine Week. Our sincere thanks again to Nicola for finding the time to chat to us. @nicolabateswinegb @winegb #Englishwineweek #Englishwine #DrinkEnglish #EWW #ESW #EnglishSparklingWine @fergelias @wineman147
TM&TM:EWW Hot on the heels of Welsh Wine Week and the internationally* successful TM&TM: WWW Ferg & Lee are delighted to kick things off for English Wine Week. A huge celebration of all that is great about English wine. Well, not all, because we can't fit that in. Over the course of English Wine Week we will be talking to the makers and shakers, the groovers and movers, the people who make English wine tick. This is a dynamic and exciting scene filled with vibrance, creativity, and excitement. Over the course of English Wine Week you'll hear from growers, makers, retailers, marketers, competition organisers, and best of all, the Chief Executive of WineGB herself. So keep your pods open and your ears logged on…we're come at you like a bullet, like a ray, like a super cool English wine. Amazingly following last week's debacle, Tom of Paso Primero (and Guardian snack feature) fame has returned to TM&TM Towers! At least this time he was prepared for a recording that had no plan, no understanding of how to conduct a tightly structured interview, and two presenters he described as ‘duelling banjos'. This time we delve deeply into the wines crafted by Tom's own hands (and jocks). Thanks to the magnificent Online Wine Tasting Company, Ferg and Lee each had 6 of Tom's wines to taste (drink) and work through under Tom's expert tutelage. Through the medium of these wines Tom shares more of his winemaking stories, Spanish adventures, and exactly how he went about crafting them. It's fair to say that our pair of banjos were suitably impressed. Blown away. These wines fully deserve their cult status and following, and not just because Tom himself is a class act. If you would like to try them, you can purchase the same tasting pack through The Online Tasting Club. Do it, you won't be disappointed. From outdated pop culture references, chasing cockerels, and dubious use of sponsorship money, this episode is another big one, but it's a huge amount of wine tasting and story telling fun. You'll love it. TM&TM: Take Your Cos And F*** O*** loaddownable from your poddingcasts Thursday morning.
How does a Shrewsbury boy achieve fame through the medium of savoury snacks and The Guardian newspaper while simultaneously being a rock start winemaker in Spain with a cult following? All this will be explored, and much more, in Part I of TM&TM's interview with Thomas Holt A.K.A. Mr Paso. The winemaking genius behind Paso Primero started life as a potential kickball star before discovering booze. Or he was injured or some other excuse. Before long he was headed to University where his contributions to science have never been questioned…as it seems there aren't any. Suddenly it was back home to Shropshire and into the loving arms of one of the UK's best wine merchants (for once, this isn't actually about Bin Two)…Tanners. It was here that Tom fell in love…in more ways than one. Following sojourns around New Zealand and Canada, it was off to Spain to establish what has quickly become an iconic brand with a fabulous story. With success in Somontano came a journey back to the world of The Kickball as Tom became the winemaker-on-call for Shrewsbury Town. In this episode we tackle winemaking techniques, the beauty of Shropshire (especially that there flower show), and high profile celebrity encounters. Ferg improves upon his [guest name] Doo [guest name] Don't in a way no one could have foreseen and Lee returns to pitting the two winemakers head to head in a battle of vinous wits. It's a big one this, and rightfully so. So settle in, kick off your dancing shoes, and be ready for Part I of a Pasodyssey. We round out our series on Welsh wines with a look to the future. While there are now many established vineyards in Wales, it is still new territory with new plantings and producers popping up all the time. One such producer is St. Hilary. Planted in 2021, their first harvest took place last year, with the first wines expected imminently. Liz explains where the dream originated, what they planted, and their hopes for their wines, and those of the Welsh Wine industry too. Liz shares so much information and detail on the St. Hilary story you'd think they'd been established for a decade. This new vineyard has a lot of potential and early barrel sampling of the wine has yielded some very positive feedback from a knowledgeable industry figure. Learn more about them by following them at @sthilaryvineyard. We have had such fun talking to all our guests over the course of this series, although we're no closer to an answer on the badger question. Hopefully this series has revealed how adventurous, creative, and dynamic the Welsh wine industry really is. There are many more producers than the handful we've interviewed here, and perhaps we'll be able to entice more to join us at TM&TM Towers soon. Our sincere thanks to @vinvancymru, @thedellvineyard, @valevinesandwines, @welshwines, @terroir.iste, @whinyardrocks, @montgomeryvineyard, @velfreyvineyard, @ancrehill, and of course @sthilaryvineyard. Go and get visiting and tasting Welsh wine and share with us your thoughts through social media or by emailing themakerandthemerchant@gmail.com @welshwineweek @welshvineyardassociation #WelshWineWeek #Welshwine #podcast #wine #winecast @fergelias @wineman147
We know what you're thinking: how does a cool South African end up making wine in Wales? We put this question to Jean du Plessis, head winemaker at Ancre Hill. This is a BIG episode for such a short run time. Covering biodynamics, tisanes, making what nature gives you, how to get good fruit…passion pours out of every syllable. So settle in and listen to the brilliant Jean share his knowledge, stories, and insights. @welshwineweek @welshvineyardassociation @ancrehill #WelshWineWeek #Welshwine #podcast #wine #winecast @fergelias @wineman147
Can you believe it's already the second Friday of Welsh Wine Week? It's amazing how quickly time passes, especially when you're having so much fun talking to the key players in the Welsh Wine Scene. This adventure continues today with Andy Mounsey from Velfrey Vineyard. This ‘Accidental' Vineyard is something of a Goldilocks place for growing vines. Andy shares the story of how The Mounsey's initial plans were rather different, but a visit from an MW finally convinced them. We then learn about the varieties planted, some of their vineyard techniques, and the wonderful wines they produce. This is another great 20 minutes with one of Wales's best producers. Give it a listen. @welshwineweek @welshvineyardassociation @velfreyvineyard #WelshWineWeek #Welshwine #podcast #wine #winecast @fergelias @wineman147
As we reach day 7 of Welsh Wine Week we're fully in our stride of talking to the key players and movers and shakers of this exciting and dynamic industry. Today we head to Powys (virtually) to talk to Woody of Montgomery Vineyard. One of the most well known names in Welsh wine with great distribution Woody tells us what makes him, and Montgomery tick. From the UK's highest vineyards to his approach to blending we learn about their varieties, location, and exercises in fine tuning. @welshwineweek @welshvineyardassociation @montgomeryvineyard #WelshWineWeek #Welshwine #podcast #wine #winecast @fergelias @wineman147
Following on from yesterday's chat with a knowledgeable consumer we head back out into the fields and valleys to continue our exploration of Welsh Wine Producers. Today we talk to Susan and James from Whinyard Rocks. Their story is one of epic romance, troublesome sheep, and altitude. Quite the combination. We learn how they came to plant a vineyard on the Welsh/Herefordshire border and just how diverse their production really is. While one of the smallest producers in Wales in terms of production (perhaps the smallest at the moment?) they have plans to grow and evolve. Their story is perhaps the perfect encapsulation of the whole Welsh Wine industry. From fabulously named wines, to creative production, Whinyard Rocks are not only an incredible amount of fun, they're a producer to really keep your eyes (and ears in this instance) on. @welshwineweek @welshvineyardassociation @twhinyardrocks #WelshWineWeek #Welshwine #podcast #wine #winecast @fergelias @wineman147
TM&TM's exploration of the Welsh Wine Space continues apace but this time with something slightly different. We love hearing what consumers think about wines (well, sometimes we love it) and we wanted to bring in a wine drinker's point of view. Someone who doesn't have the baggage of us wine professionals and get caught up worrying about pH or margin. Bethan Roberts is one of our nation's heroes. A GP. When she's not busy saving lives and curing ills, Bethan enjoys a glass of wine. Particularly Welsh Wine. For some reason Bethan has been following and interacting with this pod for a while, so we thought it high time she answered for this. Ferg brings up something about badgers. Bethan talks about her discovery of wine and gives a real consumer's viewpoint on Welsh Wine. Keep your eardrums open for another Welsh Wine Week episode coming tomorrow. @welshwineweek @welshvineyardassociation @terroir.iste #WelshWineWeek #Welshwine #podcast #wine #winecast @fergelias @wineman147
Who can believe it's already Monday of Welsh Wine Week? These days are flying by so quickly, and there are so many wines to get through. Today's episode focused on one of the biggest names in the world of Welsh Wine. From their beginnings as a postman and nurse, Robb and Nicola Merchant have become figureheads of an entire industry. From their first plantings in 2009 to crowdfunding their own winery, White Castle have achieved incredible things. Hear their story from Robb himself as he talks about those first vines, producing the UK's first Cabernet Franc, and hopes and visions for the future. @welshwineweek @welshvineyardassociation @welshwines #WelshWineWeek #Welshwine #podcast #wine #winecast @fergelias @wineman147
Our Welsh Wine Series continues today with an interview with the amazing Gwen Davies of Vale Vineyard. Up in Denbigh (or down in Denbigh depending upon your own geographical location) Vale Vineyard has a unique set of characteristics that allow grapes to thrive. It's not an obvious location for grapes, but that's what makes these wines (and Welsh producers generally) so inspiring. Gwen talks about how and where it all started, and what they've learned along the way (the real friends were…) Vale are another award winning producer, with their Debut Sparkling Rosé picking up a major gong at last year's Welsh Wine Awards. We hope you enjoy this chat as much as we enjoyed recording it, and make sure you keep an eye out for these wines (and the surrounding wildlife) @welshwineweek @welshvineyardassociation @valevinesandwines #WelshWineWeek #Welshwine #podcast #wine #winecast @fergelias @wineman147
Following yesterday first episode of TMTM:WWW we're hitting you with our second. Today we feature a wonderful conversation with Lucy Alford from The Dell Vineyard in Raglan. Planting on a family farm without much experience of wine, the Alford's have gone on to create award winning wines. Their 2022 Rosé picked up a major trophy at last year's Welsh Wine Awards. Not bad considering the battles fought against local wildlife. Lucy talks about where she and her husband were first bitten by the wine bug (any chance of seeing some Welsh Carmenere?) and how they decided to actually plant a vineyard. A fairly young producer they've achieved great things already. Listen in to the fabulous Lucy as she recounts the story of The Dell, including some wonderful Welsh mythology. @welshwineweek @welshvineyardassociation @thedellvineyard #WelshWineWeek #Welshwine #podcast #wine #winecast @fergelias @wineman147
Welsh Wine Week is finally upon us. As you may know, @fergelias & Lee are fans of Welsh Wine and we wanted to highlight some key figures within this growing and dynamic industry. This is the first of ten episodes, one each day of Welsh Wine Week, and we're starting with a bang as Lee talks to the wonderful Sara, founder and director of Vin Van Cymru. This is a fabulous wine shop and tasting room in Cardiff. Sara talks about her introduction to Welsh wine and how she sees its development. Sara also tells us about the events she has lined up over the next few days for Welsh Wine Week. Hear snippets of this interview on today's pod, with the full video over at @wineman147's blog and some edited highlights on his own social media page. Sara has a world of knowledge of wine and Welsh Wine specifically and is well worth listening to. Keep your ears peeled for an episode every day. @welshwineweek @welshvineyardassociation @vinvancymru #WelshWineWeek #Welshwine #podcast #wine #winecast
Our regular programming has been interrupted…and for a very good reason. Tomorrow sees the start of Welsh Wine Week. A 10 day (which is a week in Wales; it is its own country and can have whatever timezone, currency, and other things it chooses!) celebration of all things vinous and Welsh. Wanting to get in on the action, and desperate for content, TM&TM Senior Management took the executive decision that we would talk to some of the key figures within and around the Welsh wine industry. By we we largely mean Lee, as Ferg is “busy”, or “working” or “wondering about badgers” or something. Between 24th May and 2nd June we will feature a producer/merchant/consumer a day and in so doing, give you, our dear listener (Hashtag: Ferg's Mum) an insight into the very exciting world of Welsh Wine. Look out for the following: @vinvancymru, @thedellvineyard, @valevinesandwines, @welshwines, @terroir.iste, @whinyardrocks, @montgomeryvineyard, @velfreyvineyard, @ancrehill, and @sthilaryvineyard. Here's to Welsh Wine and Welsh Wine Week! @welshwineweek @welshvineyardassociation #WelshWineWeek #Welshwine #podcast #wine #winecast
If you listened to last week's episode you will be primed and ready for Part II of the TM&TM interview with the WSTA's Miles Beale. We promised a more serious episode and we are delivering. Following the fun and frolics of last week, it is time to get down to business. We open with Miles explaining exactly who the WSTA are and what is their role within the drinks industry. There is more to this body than may immediately meet the eye, and the membership encompasses a very broad range of businesses. Lee uses this as an opportunity to push his own #ThinkIndie #DrinkIndie agenda and ask about the engagement and interaction from the indie crowd. It is often asked if bodies like the WSTA are doing enough, but are the indies supporting in return? Given the nature of the work, we ask Miles how he walks the difficult tightrope between satisfying both the needs of members and engaging with government. Following this, we ask if there have been discussions with current shadow ministers and the opposition in the event that there is a change of government. Special mentions to, The Online Wine Tasting Club, North South Wines, and Eynsham Cellars as examples of businesses who have engaged and ‘activated' their local MPs. Other questions raised by our listener and ourselves include the specifics of repackaging sizes, declining alcohol consumption and the continuing rise of the temperance movement and how to respond in the face of these challenges. Miles also cover briefly the current state of catering and hospitality, MUP, duty rises and increasing taxation; again, we ask how we can navigate these as an industry and do our best to tackle them. Amongst these and other things, Miles also explains the Community Alcohol Partnership initiative. This is a packed in episode that covers a great deal of ground. As covered in the episode, if you are interested in learning more about these issues, the work of The WSTA, or indeed joining them, connect with them through their website, social channels, or info@thewsta.co.uk. Our sincere thanks to Miles and The WSTA for the fabulous work. TM&TM: THE WSTA available to download from wherever you get your podcasts on Thursday morning.
This week on TM&TM we find ourselves in The Thick Of It as we keep ourselves In The Loop with one of the key figures, no, THE key figure in the UK wines and spirits industry. TM&TM Towers is a House Of Cards (the original, not the remake), but we had to say Yes Minister when the chance to speak to the most influential person on the UK scene. We had so many questions for this individual that we only made it to Page Eight. We are beyond privileged to say this is part I of our talk with The WSTA's chief executive, Miles Beale. He will need no introduction (but we do give him one in the episode) as he has steered the WSTA and our industry through multiple swells and storms during his tenure at the top. From his life as a civil servant, move into politics, and becoming the UK's most influential drinks figure (did we mention that?) in Part I we enjoy some fun and frolics before a much more serious Part II arrives next week. Ferg delivers his now classic interview style with an updated and much more respectful take: Miles Does Miles Does Not while Lee asks questions about attire, snooker, and the notion of politicians as celebrities. From his loose connections to navy rum and his rumoured part in The Matrix, Miles plays along with our silly games with grace and style, as we would expect. In next week's episode we talk (genuinely) about the bigger issues facing our industry and the fabulous work of the WSTA. For now, enjoy hearing Miles share his preferred tipples, political background, and how to handle a suit-based interview crisis. Our sincere thanks to Miles for his time to record this and talk about things seemingly unrelated to the very important work of the WSTA. We promise that next week's episode is definitely worth a listen, especially if you're in, around, or connected to alcoholic drinks in any way. TM&TM: Firing Large Guns podvailable to loadstream from wherever you downcast your audio experiences on Thursday morning.
You should be careful what you wish for. You asked for it. The Maker & The Merchant is now A 2 PART PODCAST! Once a fortnight wasn't enough for you, so you're getting us twice a week now. This here is Part II of Ferg's Norse Saga. Like the mythical tales of old it involves merriment, danger, and dealing with wine journalists. Ferg talks us through the Norwegian Monopoly and explains a little about how it all works. He also examines Norwegian wine culture from social attitudes and consumption to wine communication. What are the ethics of low ground clearance? Is it right that we're asking for further sponsors for our show to sit alongside Bin Two?* Just how many Dodgeball references are socially acceptable on a wine podcast? Lee becomes nothing more than a Talking Head (well, he's never been anything else has he?) as he nods along with Ferg's every thought and whim. He does however introduce us to a brand new book: Italy In A Wine Glass. Just published and authored by the fabulous Marc Millon, this is a tour de force through Italian history, mythology, and culture, all through the lens of the country's wines. Published by Hurst, you should be looking this up. Lee also tees up his next Discover Spain wine dinner at l'Oculto on the 9th May, which you should definitely attend! We finally actually have some listener feedback. Through official channels. Thank you to our new correspondents who took the time to email in with their thoughts, questions, and moral questions. Would it take that much for you to write in too? Finally, we catch up with recently featured Karen Jenkins new hobbies. TM&TM: Oysters On A Business Trip available to your ears from your podcast site of choice on Thursday morning.
It may have escaped your attention, but Fergus has recently been on hol…working in Norway. Not only this, but he has been featuring on other podcasts in direct contravention of the strict TM&TM Charter. Yet this is an in house issue with which you do not need to concern yourselves. In this episode, Lee asks Ferg the BIG questions; Does a Peer Gynt? What does elk taste like? Why is English wine so popular in Norway? Ferg explains the intricacies of working with the Scandinavian monopolies and explores the complex and serious wine culture to be found here. From adventures with brown cheese to magnums of Balfour on pour in local bars, it sounds like Ferg has had a great time. All the while Lee has been keeping the lights on at TM&TM Towers. It's fine, he not at all jealous. In this episode he talk about…well, as usual he doesn't actually contribute much…although he does issue an apology to @thedellvineyard for an error he made in our Welsh episode. There will be swift and severe punishment for this as we have much higher standards at TM&TM. So sit back, relax, and enjoy Ferg's Norwegian adventure (with a distinct lack of Nordic Walking Stories). TM&TM: Norwegian's Would available to lodpod from the loaddowners on Thursday morning.
Last week we were introduced to actor, legend, wine & cheese raconteur Dan Belmont. From his early days on the stage to becoming a leading light in the worlds of the controlled spoilage of milk and grape juice. He could have been Hamlet, Macbeth, Kowalski...instead he wrote the book on New York State Wines. In this episode we shoot straight to the heart of all things Big Apple. Dan shares his immense knowledge of these regions and we talk grapes, styles, and diversity. Lee of course brings philosophy into play while Fergus considers what English wine can learn from a region that has had to work hard to make a name for itself. It's a fascinating insight into a region that while only really now breaking into 'the mainstream', has a lot more history and heritage than we give it credit for. Dan also talks about his business Good Wine Good People, which now has both retail and wholesale arms, and to which you should definitely be paying attention. Our huge thanks to Dan for his time and generosity. We're thinking a series of taste along episode with the man himself...who's in? Come on, let's make it happen. TM&TM: Who's Your Favourite Ghostbuster, loaddownable from your castingsite pods Thursday morning.
What do The Meisner Technique, controlled ageing of milk, and New York Wines have in common? We know, it's a bit too easy this one. The answer is of course: Dan Belmont. Dan literally wrote the book on New York wines. Literally in the traditional (and best) definition of the word. From a background in the theatre to becoming a leading expert in the worlds of both cheese and wine, Dan joins us for a two part episode where we explore his incredible journey so far. We explore his approach to acting and learn why he didn't make it in the ballet. From here Dan takes us on an adventure to Finger Lakes and dipping his toes into the world of New York wines. Amongst these fingers and toes are many stories of revelation, revolution, and mold. Ferg compares Finger Lakes (and other New York appellations) establishing themselves both locally and internationally with England, while Lee attempts to get to the beating heart of Dan's acting method and love for cheese. This is the first of a two part episode featuring Dan. Next week we will talk about how he went on to establish Good Wine Good People and learn a great deal more about New York State wine. This is a great episode, primarily as Ferg and Lee don't interrupt our wonderful guest too much. Enjoy this first slice of Prime Dan; this man's knowledge and passion seem to know no bounds. TM&TM: Geotrichum Candidum available to castpod from wherever you laddown Thursday morning.
Last week on TM&TM we promised you a bonus episode. This is more like a threat, but either way, we have delivered. You get what you deserve. Early in March (so it's a timely one) Lee bothered The Welsh Wine Showcase in London. This event celebrated the great and the good of Welsh wine and showcased the diversity, dynamism, and creativity to be found in this mighty country. From the first plantings in the 1870s to more than 70 hectares today, Wales has made incredible strides over the last few years. Strides that TM&TM are incapable of replicating; largely due to poor physical fitness, age, and utter laziness. We know what we're about. Over the course of this bonus episode, Lee guides Ferg (and you our dear listener: Hashtag: Ferg's Mum) through the producers who were there on the day. We start with Ancre Hill and travel through Wales taking in Hebron Vineyard, Montgomery, The Dell Vineyard, The Vale Vineyard, Velfrey, Whinyard Rocks, and White Castle. Lee shares his thoughts on the producers and their standout wines and chooses his favourite sparkling, white, and red from the event. We then return to England briefly to talk about Ferg's latest project at Balfour: the brand New Albariño. You didn't ask, and we didn't listen, but here it is. TM&TM: What Does Supreme Belief Taste Like? available to castpod from wherever you loaddown on Thursday morning.
You will well know that at TM&TM we tackle the pressing intellectual questions of the day. There's next to no prevarication in our latest episode as Fergus & Lee ask just what was Humpty Dumpty? Is the Forbidden Fruit actually a PIWI? And what connects the Tuscan Maremma with Sussex? But it's not all fun and games. Firstly we wish FotP Janina our best wishes as she has lost her voice (she had when we recorded this mess 3 weeks ago). Then we deal with a most serious complaint that has arrived via unofficial channels. Karen Jenkins was furious when she accosted Lee and gave him a piece of her mind. He deserved it. We hope to use the AAA technique as we Acknowledge, Apologise, and Assure Karen that we will right the severe injustice she has discovered. If you were expecting one of our host to ‘Go Full Partridge', you'd probably think it would be Lee. Well, you'd be wrong. Ferg out-Partridges Partridge as he introduces a new segment: Ferg's Nordic Stories' This leads to another issue as Ferg takes umbrage with Lee's response to Brad Horne's March Madness questions. We see the return of our incredibly popular* ‘This Week I Have Been Mostly Drinking' feature. Ferg explores Sangiovese clones with Cecchi and Lee drinks his way through a French Viognier from the fandabiedozie Wine Society. Prepare to be wowed as we introduce our new sponsor** Diam Corks as Ferg regales us all with some #OTRChat. We can't wait to see those advertising dollars roll in. We also share a very special discount code for our other sponsor Bin Two*** Lee talks us through his new role as Ambassador for Flavours of Spain & l'Oculto Restaurant and covers what exactly is his current employment status? Remember to email us@themakerandthemerchant@gmail.com. What a mess. TM&TM: Ferg's Nordic Stories available to lodpoad from wherever you cowndast this Thursday. We're sorry. *it's not popular at all **This is not true ***Neither is this
