Say hello to one of the most iconic crime films of all time! Movie Mistrial takes on Brian De Palma's legendary gangster epic, Scarface.Scarface is a bold and unrelenting rise-and-fall story, powered by Al Pacino's electrifying performance as Tony Montana. With its intense action, unforgettable dialogue, and stylish depiction of the criminal underworld, the film has cemented itself as a cultural phenomenon and a staple of gangster cinema. While Scarface is celebrated for its larger-than-life storytelling, some critics argue that its excessive violence, over-the-top performances, and lengthy runtime can overshadow its deeper themes. Additionally, its glorification of excess and crime has sparked debate about its moral implications.Join us as we dive into the world of Scarface—its legacy, impact, and the debate over whether it's a cinematic masterpiece or an indulgent spectacle.Connect with us and share your thoughts:Twitter: http://tiny.cc/MistrialTwitterFacebook: http://tiny.cc/MistrialFBInstagram: http://tiny.cc/MistrialInstaVisit our website, www.moviemistrial.com, for more captivating episodes and to stay up-to-date with all things movies.

In 1939, reviewing the beloved M-G-M classic “The Wizard of Oz” for The New Yorker, the critic Russell Maloney declared that the film held “no trace of imagination, good taste, or ingenuity.” The use of color was “eye-straining,” the dialogue was unbelievable, and the movie as a whole was “a stinkeroo.” This take might shock today's audiences, but Maloney is far from the only critic to go so pointedly against the popular view. In a special live show celebrating The New Yorker's centenary, the hosts of Critics at Large discuss this and other examples drawn from the magazine's archives, including Dorothy Parker's 1928 takedown of “Winnie-the-Pooh” and Pauline Kael's assessment of Al Pacino as “a lump” at the center of “Scarface.” These pieces reveal something essential about the role of criticism and the value of thinking through a work's artistic merits (or lack thereof) on the page. “I felt all these feelings while reading Terrence Rafferty tearing to shreds ‘When Harry Met Sally…,' ” Alexandra Schwartz says. “But it made the movie come alive for me again, to have to dispute it with the critic.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Lies, Lies, and More Lies,” by Terrence Rafferty (The New Yorker)“Bitches and Witches,” by John Lahr (The New Yorker)“Don't Shoot the Book-Reviewer; He's Doing the Best He Can,” by Clifton Fadiman (The New Yorker)“The Feminine Mystique,” by Pauline Kael (The New Yorker)“The Wizard of Hollywood,” by Russell Maloney (The New Yorker)“The Fake Force of Tony Montana,” by Pauline Kael (The New Yorker)“Renoir's Problem Nudes,” by Peter Schjeldahl (The New Yorker)“Humans of New York and the Cavalier Consumption of Others,” by Vinson Cunningham (The New Yorker)“The Great Sadness of Ben Affleck,” by Naomi Fry (The New Yorker)“President Killers and Princess Diana Find Musical Immortality,” by Alexandra Schwartz (The New Yorker)“Obscure Objects of Desire: On Jeffrey Eugenides,” by Alexandra Schwartz (The Nation)“Reading ‘The House at Pooh Corner,' ” by Dorothy Parker (The New Yorker)New episodes drop every Thursday. Territorio Rojo.

Y todo era to-do. Today, we're diving into the flashy and often thrilling world of cinematic money scenes as we count down our Top 5 Cash Scenes in movies. We'll also discuss the complexities of financial manipulation in The Laundromat (2019) and switch gears to the animated high stakes of Thunderbirds Are Go.Top 5 Cash Scenes in Movies:The Dark Knight (2008) - The Joker's notorious scene where he burns a mountain of cash is not only visually striking but also serves as a profound statement on his anarchistic views towards money and power. No Country for Old Men (2007) - The suspenseful scene where Llewelyn Moss discovers a case full of cash amidst a drug deal gone wrong is pivotal. It sets the tone for the cat-and-mouse chase that underpins the movie's tension.Scarface (1983) - Tony Montana's famous “money laundering” montage showcases his rise to power. The visual of cash flowing through counting machines as he builds his empire is iconic in cinema history. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) - Jordan Belfort's indulgent lifestyle fueled by ill-gotten gains is epitomized in the scene where he and his cohorts toss cash around their office, highlighting the excess and moral decay of his financial practices. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) - The chaotic scramble for cash buried under the "big W" provides not only comedic gold but also a critical look at greed and desperation as every character vies for the hidden treasure. The Laundromat, directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Meryl Streep, delves into the shadowy world of financial fraud and the repercussions of the Panama Papers. The film intertwines multiple narratives to explore how money laundering affects people from different walks of life. While it aims to shed light on complex financial deceptions, the film's sprawling approach to storytelling sometimes dilutes its impact, leaving us wishing for a tighter narrative focus. Shifting to a more family-friendly portrayal of high-tech adventures, Thunderbirds Are Go revisits the beloved world of the Tracy family and their life-saving missions. Although not focused on cash per se, the show's funding by the secretive and wealthy Tracy family and their high-stakes rescues offer a lighter way to discuss the power and responsibilities that come with great wealth. We hated it.Whether you're drawn to the dramatic flair of cash flying around in films or intrigued by the intricate depictions of financial malfeasance in modern cinema, today's episode promises a rich exploration of money's cinematic allure and its real-world implications. Join us as we unravel the tales of treasure and treachery that make these cash scenes so compelling.

Antonio "Tony Montana" Oseguera Cervantes, brother of Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera, was arrested in December 2022 by Mexican authorities in a suburban area of Guadalajara. Tony Montana is accused of managing financial and logistical operations for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). His arrest represents a significant setback for the CJNG, as he held a pivotal role within the organization. Following his capture, Mexican authorities approved his extradition to the United States, where he faces numerous charges, including drug trafficking and organized crime. The operation to apprehend Tony Montana involved a coordinated effort between various Mexican law enforcement agencies. Reports indicate that he was responsible for laundering money, coordinating international drug shipments, and managing the cartel's vast network of operatives. His extradition to the U.S. is part of broader efforts to dismantle the leadership structure of the CJNG, which has been identified as one of the most powerful and violent drug trafficking organizations in the world. The arrest and pending extradition of Tony Montana are expected to have significant implications for the CJNG, potentially disrupting their operations and weakening their influence both in Mexico and internationally. This development highlights ongoing international cooperation in combating drug trafficking and organized crime, aiming to hold key figures accountable for their roles in perpetuating violence and illegal activities.(commercial at 6:07)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:A Cartel Boss Nicknamed ‘Tony Montana' Was Just Arrested in Mexico (vice.com)

If I were on a game show and the category was "Top 10 Things That Are Cuban", my first thought wouldn't be cigars, Desi Arnaz, or that missile crisis.  It would be Tony Montana, OK??  One of cinema's most iconic criminals, played by Al Pacino in 1983's Scarface, this guy spews F-bombs and bullets like crazy, man.  10 years later, Pacino would win an Oscar for Scent of a Woman, where the naughtiest word he said (repeatedly) was "hoo-ha!".  But nobody remembers that character, right?  Did he cut down dozens of drug thugs with a machine gun?  NO.  He didn't kill a single person, even though he was a blind guy driving a Ferrari.  Hey, I'm not condoning gratuitous violence.  Blame Brian DePalma for that, if you must, but Scarface is a riveting masterpiece of a movie.  I have to talk about it!  Why don't you grab some coke (the beverage!!) and have a listen?

We breakdown the Brian De Palma classic... 'Scarface' and then a whole lot of acting process talk. Is Al Pacino's performance as Tony Montana a masterclass in transformational acting or... demonic? Who's to say? Us. thats who. We break down this iconic movie-film and many of the performances. Ryan just took Lindy Davies workshop. We get into lessons learned, Ryan's take aways as an actor and as a director. We discuss moving slowly, and building the capacity to understand what we're actually feeling. And using it in our work. Then we get into acting goals and areas of focus. Enjoy. ex oh

Failed Pitbull impersonator Ismael Reyes--you can call him Izzy--might not be the Scarface type, but why should that keep him from trying? Growing up in Miami has shaped him into someone who dreams of being the King of the 305, with the money, power, and respect he assumes comes with it. After finding himself at the mercy of a cease-and-desist letter from Pitbull's legal team and living in his aunt's garage-turned-efficiency, Izzy embarks on an absurd quest to turn himself into a modern-day Tony Montana. When Izzy's efforts lead him to the tank that houses Lolita, a captive orca at the Miami Seaquarium, she proves just how powerful she and the water surrounding her really are--permeating everything from Miami's sinking streets to Izzy's memories to the very heart of the novel itself. What begins as Izzy's story turns into a super-saturated fever dream as sprawling and surreal as the Magic City, one as sharp as an iguana's claws, and as menacing as a killer whale's teeth. As the truth surrounding Izzy's boyhood escape from Cuba surfaces, the novel reckons with the forces of nature, with the limits and absence of love, and with the dangers of pursuing a tragic inheritance. New Year, new you? Who better to turn to for inspiration than a good-looking, well-educated, wealthy New York City investment banker with a razor sharp wit and killer taste in music?  Patrick Bateman has a flawless skin care routine, does one thousand crunches per day, stays up to date on the latest in fashion and food, can share insightful music criticism at the drop of a hat, and always returns his videotapes on time. Aside from his need to engage in homicidal bloodlust on a massive scale, he's practically perfect! At least, that's what too many viewers of 2000's AMERICAN PSYCHO seem to think, based on the way Christian Bale's suave psychopath has been memed and emulated across the internet. Fresh off our last episode, which examined the problematic worship of Scarface's Tony Montana, we're scrutinizing an even more deranged cinematic role model. Patrick Bateman first stirred up controversy in the publishing world as the narrator of Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 novel, then caused an uproar all over again in Mary Harron's satirical film adaptation, even as it proved Bale had the chops to be a leading man. Does American Psycho really glorify violence and celebrate misogyny, racism, and homophobia the same way the Bateman character does? Or has this subversive send-up of 1980s materialism just been misunderstood by certain audiences (like, say, TikTok influencers)? This podcast makes for ideal listening during intricate skin care routines, insane workouts, and even while waiting for a table at the hottest restaurant in town! Bright lights, joyful music, expensive baubles, and white powder everywhere! Could it be Christmastime again? Or is it perhaps a sweltering, sweaty drug war in Miami, circa 1983? Actually, it's both, as When We Were Young celebrates the holidays the only way we know how - with narcotics, chainsaws, and expletives galore, all courtesy of Brian De Palma's ultraviolent crime classic SCARFACE. Americans have a long history of looking up to men who aren't the best role models. That explains why Tony Montano, the Cuban crime lord unforgettably embodied by Al Pacino, became an unlikely role model for millions of moviegoers who turned the controversial gangster flick into a stone cold classic over the four decades that followed its release. Some viewers find inspiration in Tony Montana's upwardly mobile immigrant story, while others find the film's execution of the American dream to be even more crass than the capitalist excess it's critiquing. And then there are those who just really like the F-word and machine guns! To celebrate the film's 40th anniversary, Chris, Becky, and Seth sample from Scarface's many extremes, exploring everything from the incestuous implications of its sibling relationship to the over-the-top carnage of its finale - all set to a throbbing disco soundtrack, of course. Do we still consider Scarface to be a lil' fren' to cinema? Or is Tony Montana a bad guy we prefer to say “goodnight” to indefinitely? Back in December of 1983, this bloody, epic crime saga from director Brian DePalma (Carrie, The Untouchables, Blow Out) opened to middling reviews and box office....after months of hype regarding its extreme violence and how it depicted the Cuban community in Florida.  The controversy never quite died down but its reputation only grew as it went on to become one of the most influential films of the 1980's.  Starring Al Pacino as the infamous Tony Montana and loosely based on the legend of Al Capone, we follow his meteoric rise from destitute refugee to excessively wealthy crime boss....and the subsequent fall as well.  It also stars Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Robert Loggia, and F. Murry Abraham.  Say HELLO to his little friend!!!WARNING: GRAPHIC LANGUAGE & GRAPHIC VIOLENCE PORTRAYED THROUGHOUT MOVIE CLIPS Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

On this episode of Slip The Jab, Ian shows off his breast cancer awareness wig and Lino reminds Ian of the time he got scammed by a breast cancer awareness social media account. We recap Islam Makhachev defeating Alexander Volkanovski, why this loss doesn't hurt Volk's stock as much as some fans think it does, why Makhachev doesn't deserve the number one P4P spot, and discuss Volk breaking down at the post fight presser.  We give our thoughts on Usman vs. Khamzat and we're left with a lot of question. We also discuss the controversial doctor stoppage in the Walker vs. Ankalaev fight, Victor Henry taking one of the worst nut shots of all time, which makes Lino think back to when he had Epididymitis. Lino's still mad at the surgeon that butchered his arm when they removed his cyst and he's mad at the vet he removed Loma's nuts and made him look like he has a camel toe. We give our thoughts on Bud Light becoming the official beer sponsor of the UFC, Dana White going back on his word to not give a f'ck if flags hurt peoples feelings, Viktoriia Dudakova admitting to having a staff infection, and give our Slip Picks and Ianalysis for Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou. Lino's upset his and Ian's friendship is a one way street when it comes to movie and show recommendations and give his review on Ian's favorite show 'Suits'. Lino used a Tony Montana amount of baby powder in his chucks, Ian reads his yearly breast cancer awareness month poem, and Lino ends with the Post Fight Song of the Week. Support the showVISIT OUR WEBSITE: https://slipthejabpodcast.comSLIP THE JAB MERCH: https://slipthejabpodcast.com/shopALSO AVAILABLE ON:Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/STJSpotifyApple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/STJApplePodcastsFOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Twitter: https://twitter.com/slipthejabpodSponsored by NuKine WellnessUse code SLIPSTER20 for 20% OFF
